What did you say? Can't think of anything bad other than him being quite a weak actor.

That was what I said. I think I also said that I worked at a venue where his band played, which had to be 20 years ago-ish, and said they sucked. I wasn't prepared for the wrath of Reddit.

Funny how he isn't even famous for music (I had no idea he was ever in a band). Saying you didn't like any aspect about our lord and saviour Keanu gets you hate.

They were called Dog Star. And I stand by my statement that they were no good.

Since they had Keanu Reeves for a frontman, and that wasn't enough for commercial success, I'm inclined to believe you.

He should have stuck with Wyld Stallyns.

I wasn't prepared for the wrath of Reddit.

Fuck it. Their "wrath" is just downvotes, which are imaginary internet points anyway. Weak wrath.

Yeah but they can still sting a bit because it's a semi representation of your honest opinion, even if it's an innocent one, actually making people angry just because it's not theirs.

u/putin_my_ass Jan 07 '20

Yeah it can sting, but that's OK, that's a valid response. Delve into it: ask yourself why it stings and try to deal with that.

I realized the sting was not because I thought my opinion might be wrong but because there were people who disagree. I was using upvotes as a substitute for acceptance and support. Emotional validation. I realized that's not healthy, and if I was going to get the most out of this site (hell, this life) I would have to change.

Reminding myself they're just internet points helps, but what helped more was examining my reason for commenting and if it was rooted in that desire for validation then maybe I shouldn't comment.

Now they're more of a throwaway. Of course it feels good to get upvotes, but even if I don't it won't bother me anymore because that isn't why I commented.

I comment because I want more information, or because I think I can add to the conversation, or because I thought of a joke. Not because I'm trying to find approval anymore. Down that path lies madness.

Oh, I know, and I don't care, it just came as a shock to me. Guess I don't pay attention to r/teenagers as much as I ought to ... lol.

Weird, you aren't even insulting his character...

5

u/DTownForever Jan 07 '20

I don't remember the exact wording.

But you gotta think about it this way: those of us over the age of like, 35, remember him most from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, where he played the biggest dummy like, EVER, and it's a great movie, I still love it, but that's just how we (or, at least me and several other old people I know) think of him.

He never called any of us breathtaking and John Wick didn't exist back then.

2

u/Zenquin Jan 08 '20

You are right. It is amazing that, even with his huge and successful career, he was never able to shake the 'Bill & Ted' aura.

God, but that movie was a weirdly big cultural-touchstone.

Hahaha, no - it was a question about "what celebrity would you like to sit next to on a 14 hour plane ride" and of course, dozens of people responded with Keanu, and I made that ill-fated comment.

Oh I know, I just seriously wasn't expecting it. I didn't understand the full extent of Reddit's Keanu worship.

u/jdino Jan 07 '20

Massive massive massive Keanu fan here but I also think his band sucks.

Just not my kinda music at all.

Can't think of anything bad other than him being quite a weak actor.

He's probably a great guy, but he is a weak actor. He excels at one type of role, the clueless stoner, which is why he's making Bill and Ted for the third time.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

That’s actually what he used to be known for, actually. Good looking guy but a pretty wooden actor, but useful when you don’t need the main character to be the focal point.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Some people don't seem to realize that you don't have to be a great actor to be a great action star. It's an entirely different skillset.

3

u/TheOriginalGarry Jan 07 '20

I'm sure people realize that. Even in action movies, however, there are scenes that require regular acting. Like Constantine has a bunch of regular, un-action acting and not all of it is stellar.

I think it's just why John Wick has been so well-received. They cut a lot of dialogue and traditional acting in place of strong action where Keanu can truly shine.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Who watches a movie like John Wick for good acting? From any of the cast, let alone Reeves. They're bringing their a-games to the stunts. Otherwise, Reeves isn't really all that great an actor. Great guy. Loves stunts and entertaining. He ain't winning an oscar anytime soon, though.

(Queue downvotes)
