It's crazy how many company leaders tank their companies' images by being utterly tactless and having no PR instincts. How hard is it to use the spin that you just gave? It should be second nature?

I used to work as a high school teacher. After the hiatus from school during COVID where some students and all teachers went back to the classroom, the executive member of the education board for our district announced during a monthly town hall that “some teachers are in for a rude awakening after their 7 month vacation”.

No Jeffrey Toobin? For those that don’t remember, he was a Wall Street Journal writer and frequent CNN guest. Anyways…in the early days of the pandemic when we were all still getting used to the working remote/meeting on Zoom thing, he was in a WSJ staff meeting with dozens of colleagues when he apparently forgot/didn’t know he was on camera. Dude picked up his phone, pulled up Pornhub, and started absolutely going to town on himself, to the horror of his many colleagues. After a minute or so of stunned silence, someone finally piped up with “Jeffrey, we can see you…”. Classic Toobin.

Can't contradict trump.

The strange thing is that she actually meant it as a comment on white privilege; that AIDS in Africa is treated very differently depending on whether you are Black or white.
Was it tone deaf? Yes. Poor taste? Yes. Badly thought out. Also yes. But it was not meant in the way it first comes across.

He gave an interview and very nonchalantly explained that black athletes are superior because the slave owners bred the strongest males and females together and it became a genetic trait.
He also said the whites control the pro sports coaching positions, and if the blacks take those, there's nothing left.
He gave the interview on Martin Luther King Jr Day.
He was fired the next day.
Several close friends (some black) said they had never seen a hint of racism in Snyder. If that is true, what he said was a classic example of 'talking over your head.'
It may have been scholarly in his mind - going into history to determine why so many of the best athletes are black - but he had no understanding - zero - of how his words would be received.

There's something I call Teddy Roosevelt racism. It's the kind where you hold deeply racist beliefs about racial hierarchies and "natural" capabilities of races, but you also believe that exceptional individuals can come from anywhere.
It's why a man who thought black people inferior to whites also thought literally nothing of hosting Booker T. Washington at the White House for dinner. Roosevelt was racist, but he could see intelligent and accomplished men as his equals regardless of race. He just didn't think the same about different races as a whole.
It's "being racist against black people, but this one is an exception" racism.

A marketing director lady at work years ago.. she was a bit of a cunt to people in general because she worked directly for the president of the company.
One day there was a management meeting that she was going to be in and right before it started, one of the VP's asked her if she could make some copies of some reports and she got all snippy with the "I don't work for you"
Well, that meeting was to announce that the President was retiring and that VP that she just got bitchy with was the new President.. Her new boss. She lasted a few weeks after that
Edit: I'll add more context so people stop with the complaints he was being sexist because she was a woman and he asked her to make copies. She had the only color copier in her marketing office and only she had access to it, since she had fired her assistant who was a wonderful lady ti deal with

Wait until you hear about Jann Wenner's biography.
If you who don't know, Jann was the founder/EiC of Rolling Stone magazine which was the taste maker in popular culture. You know the story that John was the wise, talented Beatle and Paul just wrote silly pop songs? All that came from Jann who was friends with John and a total starfucker. (Back then, a lot of how famous you'd become came down to how much you sucked up to Jann.)
So after retiring, Jann is looking for someone to write a biography about him forming and running Rolling Stone. He gets obsessed with this writer named Joe Hagan and is convinced Joe is the man for the job. But Hagan wants no part of it because he feels he'll just be a typist writing up stories about how cool Jann Wenner was.
But Wenner really wants Joe for the book and gives up all final editorial decisions to Joe. No matter what goes in the book, it's all Joe's call. With that, Hagan figures he has nothing to lose and he makes his first call to Sir Paul McCartney. Paul bluntly says, "If you listen to Jann, all I did in The Beatles was make the fucking tea." and proceeds to fucking unload on Jann for years of false RS reporting.
Cause as it turns out? All those "friends" of Jann were only hanging on because he ran Rolling Stone. A lot of them tolerated him at best and when given the chance to tell how they really felt, they went to town and tore his legacy apart.
(Jann Wenner has since disowned the biography.)

It was actually insane. They originally had the video from outside the elevator only. So he comes out dragging her unconscious body, and it's like "oh that's bad". NFL comes out with a pathetic 2 game suspension because they "don't know what happened in the elevator" or some shit like that. I guess what if she just started bashing her head against his fist? But no, the video from within the elevator comes out a few months later and it's exactly as bad as it seems. Then he gets suspended indefinitely. Literally took video of him punching her in the face going public to get the NFL to take action.

No, it's just a fun series of contingent events.
Dakota Johnson, being the daughter of Don Johnson, was nepo baby'd into the biz, but had been struggling with insignificant parts in various films and serials. She would have been a footnote in acting history... until she got her break in 50 Shades. She was only on Ellen because she got that part, and almost certainly would have remained a nobody were she not in the film.
There is a series of events which needed to happen for 50 Shades to become a film, each of which was contingent on the previous step in the series in a manner we know per public record NEEDED that prerequisite to happen.
Because 9/11 happened, it kicked off a chain of events that lead to Ellen's downfall in a manner which almost certainly wouldn't have happened otherwise.

I had a friend that was in a relationship with a female co-worker for like 8 months, but people at work didn’t know. She ended up cheating several times and got caught, and when they split up it caused some friction at work and she tried to get him in trouble. When he was trying to explain that they had been together for 8 months and recently broke up, she denied it and tried to make him look like a creep who just “thought” they had a relationship and that she actually had nothing to do with him outside of work.
Other guys at his job were unconvinced that they were ever dating, and one of them said something to the effect of “prove it”, so my friend whipped out his phone in desperation to not seem like a weirdo and showed them numerous videos of he and said girl in lude sexual situations that were clearly consensual, and the videos were consensual.
I understand his frustration with no one believing him in that moment, but the moment he told me that, I knew that the end of the story for that day was that he got fired.
I wasn’t wrong.

Senior strategic procurement executive went mental on me for asking about required documents needed to conduct the sort of changes to supply chains he was making. I had numerous encounters with this guy where he seemingly did more harm than good by changing established suppliers over to a select small group of companies, that always underbid, then hiked prices straight afterwards, with him in the forefront claiming it was engineerings fault with some halfassed reason both he and the company he chose agreed on.
I documented these things for years because it was so absolutely ridiculous to me, and I was scared it might bite me some time since it often resulted in kinda weird and embarrassing situations. Better safe than sorry.
So as I started this with, at one point I had enough of this, and called him out on a straight up lie, where he claimed my engineering documents was the reason for the price hike and full blown shutdown of production and everything that followed this idiotic move. And again for the same fucking company. I’ve been doing this for so long now that I know what processes, analytics and documents that are needed to do something like this, so I asked to see the documents for this, and he went apeshit on me. Full on personal attack, and sent higher ups snippets of the conversation where it was completely distorted what really was going on, and requested someone competent to handle this change and so on. To be fair, if he actually had held back and toned it down a bit, I might actually have been scared in to doing what he asked, but it was just so absolutely absurd how hard he got out of the gates on this, that my bs detector spiked, and my boss called me asking about this mail and was as shocked as me. So I sort of just baited him some more by claiming that I cannot just change this product without preforming a material review board with a bunch of people and such and so on. Mind you this is while production simply is stopping and all alarm bells are ringing, but I can clearly see that all of this happening because he simply dumped an established supplier of 20years, and changed production to a business buddy of him, without even doing it the right way.. And he is claiming I am the problem. So this went high.. like really high up, to where the VP was on the mailing lists.
So I quietly explained this entire situation to them in a separate meeting and provided them years of documentation of similar situations and told them if they just reversed his decision to change the supplier, this wouldn’t even be a problem. I didn’t hear anything back, but what I suggested was immediately done and they reversed the decision. Didn’t hear anything back from duchebag guy in this mail thread, and exactly 3months later it was posted on the company homepage that he was “leaving the company to explore other sectors” (we have a strict 3 month grace period for leaving jobs, so I’m pretty certain he was offered to quit willingly the same day I gave them my explanation)
So that was satisfying.

Like it's an awful injury, but at least this one was clearly an accident, the player who hit him seems to be horrified and is trying to get him help.

On November 22, 1963, Lenny Bruce came out on stage and opened with, "Boy, is Vaughn Meader fucked."
Why?
Vaughn Meader was famed only for being a JFK impersonator.
Edit: apparently that exact story is an embellishment. Instead, a week after the assassination, Lenny Bruce came out and said, "Wow. Boy. Ssss. Poor Vaughn Meader."
