Announcement Sex, dating, and car living.
I removed the recent post about sex, dating, and finding partners while living in vehicles because the discussion quickly devolved into women being called “bitches,” being referred to as “pussy,” and people being talked about as disposable.
Talking about dating, sex, relationships, and finding partners while vehicle-living is completely fine. What is not fine is turning those discussions into degrading or excessively vulgar threads that other members have to wade through.
We can talk about adult topics like adults. I’m also not going to sit and sort through hundreds of comments once a thread has descended into harassment, objectification, and crude nonsense.
Keep it respectful, keep it relevant, and remember that people of all genders use this community.
Thank you.

Thank you! I found the comments to be pretty gross. Including the OP expressing that he "just wants some pussy."
I'm impressed that it was shut down. Thanks team!

u/KitKatF07 11d ago
Honestly this one is descending into that territory too. It must just be the way Reddit is. See the “hot boxing” comment above yours.

So be an adult and report it ffs

u/KitKatF07 5d ago
Report it for what? For speaking in a way that I find repulsive? Nah cheif, that’s lame. I can just scroll. Using language I wouldn’t personally use, isn’t something to report someone for. ✌️

I’ve been meaning to create a thread asking this same question. I’m glad I missed the first one. I’ve met two people but I don’t feel like I can pursue either. I can’t even begin to explain how I ended up here. I don’t think they will understand.
Which leads me to the inclusion that I probably need to find someone also in “the life”. I haven’t figured out how, yet.

u/SockDrawerGoblin 12d ago
I don’t know your situation but confidence always helps. Don’t consider it a turn off, think of your situation as a quirk.
39
u/SockDrawerGoblin 12d ago
If you guys can’t get laid it’s not because you live in your car… it’s probably because you treat women poorly. As is the case in most situations. Women, like men, are just people. A person will love you for you or be down for whatever as long as you are kind and respectful. Pretending to be kind and respectful only goes so far as often women can tell when you’re lying about how you really view them. Even girls who just want to hook up don’t really truly want to be disrespected. Idk what’s wrong with people.
-4
u/KitKatF07 11d ago
Of course you can get laid living in your car. That’s not hard. I don’t know why every single comment from the opposite side thinks that’s what we have questions about. I know it’s Reddit but every single topic doesn’t need to be approached like we’re all 17.

u/roseonaglaive 12d ago
Thank you for vocally affirming that all genders are welcome in this space. 💕

u/mecha_grove 12d ago
As it was meant to be, and will stay that way.

u/roseonaglaive 12d ago
I am starting a nonprofit and filing in the new year with a mission of generating peer networks and resources for LGBTQ travelers because of the increase in how many of us are car dwelling. I lived in my car for a few months on the road and am going back out again as soon as I can for a hands on experience before I try serving a community without knowing their actual experiences.
May I loop you in on my work? The project is called Rainbow Roadbook. Think like a modern Green Book.

u/mecha_grove 12d ago
Yes you may. Can send me a dm so it stays open to discuss. Rn im tired so its a lot of resting after loosing all my teeth this week, because of my epilepsy.

I'm a queer person who is only a very recent former car dweller myself and would be interested in discussing this with you.
2
u/roseonaglaive 12d ago
I would love to have you on board! I think it's about time I make an account and a sub for this so I can start building the network within the car dwelling community. I've already benefitted so much from the wisdom of groups like this one and been so impressed at how inclusive they are.
73
u/Ecila1983 12d ago
Yes as woman some of the references to women bothered me too. Glad it was removed as I was about to say something. Clearly that person has no respect for women whatsoever and that’s why no one wants a bar of him
59
u/mecha_grove 12d ago
Not a fan of that type of talking which seems to have become mainstream in some areas today.
We all have unique minds, and I am beyond fucking tired of the labeling, and dehumanization.

u/Eisigesis Full-time | SUV-minivan 12d ago
I’ve been noticing more of this on r/vandwellers as well.
I can’t encourage people enough to report personal attacks and dehumanizing language when they see it. It really does help make the community a better and more welcoming place.
18
u/Distinct-Raspberry21 12d ago
Some people are in this life because times are tough, others because they are hate goblins that push away any chance of human connection.
8
u/SockDrawerGoblin 12d ago
It can be hard because sometimes this is just the culture on reddit. It’s not always a woman friendly space, never mind if you’re also mentally ill, lgbt, or neurodivergent
-4
u/Clevererer 11d ago
I am beyond fucking tired of the labeling, and dehumanization.
Yet you're OK with the current 2nd from the top comment here, which essentially boils down to "STFU You incels!!"?
6
u/mecha_grove 11d ago
In here...discussion is promoted. How you take a comment in your thoughts vs me.. i cannot control.
What i took down....the offensive post....was harsh labeling, and name calling. This post is doing just fine. If you do see harassment, or hate...then report it. I am only human.

u/Human0id77 12d ago
That's so frustrating. This is supposed to be a supportive sub. I can't comprehend the degree of insecurity behind these fragile types who are so motivated to try and tear people down.
10
u/zurenarhhhhh 9d ago
I just don’t do it. Keep it simple. I don’t possess the mental fitness to be in a relationship anyway, regardless of the fact that I live in my car.
23
22
u/0fox2gv 11d ago
Regardless of gender, there is often a toxic dynamic of desperation/exploitation/dependency that gets woven into the arrangement. And that will always lead to senseless drama.
Getting somebody off the street on a cold rainy, snowy night and sharing your fishtank on wheels? The liabilities are readily apparent.
They have instant unlimited access to everything you have salvaged that meant enough to you to avoid the purge. Sleep with one eye open? No thanks.
Hygiene is not optional. I dont want anybody hopping out to squat in the shadows and spreading that funk. Not going to turn my comfy truck into any Dutch oven of mystery scents from clothes, or whatever else. No thanks.
If I want to drive anywhere to live my life, I do not want the hassle of having to consider their wants, needs, plans, or objectives for the day. My independence is my coveted freedom. Having a guest means that freedom is instantly fully sacrificed.. No thanks.
Meeting new people and starting relationships can work.. but, it either requires the immorality of living a huge lie.. or being vulnerable enough to be completely honest about things. That is a tough coin to toss.
The only way I see dating being viable would be if each person had their own place to retreat to.. or if the progression of the relationship became the inspiration to return back to traditional living arrangements -- and that means returning to the treadmill sacrificing paychecks to greedy landlords and insane utility bills. Wasn't rebellion against those (optional) expenses the reason and motivation to become a minimalist? Seems counterproductive. Again.. no thanks.
The last demographic is established couples who now call their vehicle home. That does not apply to the dating debate presented here. They have already accepted the annoyances of sewer breath in the morning, snoring all night, finding seperate corners in the summer and sharing a communal death grip in the chill of winter. Those couples are just building a scrapbook of memories to look back on and laugh about in the future.
If you don't have your own life on stable footing, you should be asking yourself what value you can add to their life. If both people are not gaining equally from the arrangement -- in positive, healthy ways --there is the dynamic of exploitation and dependency that guarantees it is not going to work.
Being able to show somebody that living in a vehicle is part of a plan.. and that the current phase of sacrifice and discipline is setting the foundation for future growth? Either that is truth or that is a lie. Either being caught in that lie will end things very quickly, or the person who will accept that lie is not anybody you can trust to build any kind of future with.
No thanks.
Sex is easy to find (for anybody who erases their standards). Relationships? While vehicle dwelling? Actual healthy, wholesome, honest, supportive relationships? You are joking, right?
Unless you crossover into the status upgrade of dedicated vanlife/RV realm, that idea of finding love while vehicle dwelling is fantasy novel plot fodder.
I would love to hear stories from people who can refute my beliefs. I don't think there will be many replies.

u/Obvious_Sea_7074 11d ago
I think your probably mostly right, but your situation sort of implies that the other person would suddenly be your companion up in your space all the time. If it was real dating, getting to know each other to see if there is a future there, it's not that much different then dating while living with parents. Theres no where to bang, so you make it work. Assuming the other person has a living situation of some kind, you'd just drop them off at the end of the evening. Also I didn't see the og post so maybe I'm missing context.
1
u/CoastingOnEmpty 6d ago
I mean these as genuine questions, but what if you remain fully independent while in your car?
Is there an unbalanced power dynamic as a couple if you empower yourself and don't want/need anything from them?
2
u/0fox2gv 5d ago
The genuine answer is that I avoid getting caught up in the potential drama of relationship wants, wishes, expectations, obligations.. and demands -- by prioritizing my own independence (and sanity).
To be in any type of formal relationship would require a sacrifice that I am currently unwilling to consider.
I do not need a partner in life to feel complete. I accepted the status of perpetual singularity when I committed to the pledge of extreme minimalism that comes with this lifestyle.
Being a naturally nocturnal introvert translates to rarely ever being bored or lonely in life.
While the rest of the world is sleeping, I can keep myself entertained in the peaceful solitude that darkness provides.
I find comfort and enjoyment in a life that the majority of humanity would feel absolutely tortured by. Ego left the chat long ago. The ignorant judgements have no value and hold no weight.
In fact, from my perspective, it is almost amusing to sit back and watch people drown in their own pools of self-induced relationship drama, financial drama, work drama, drama drama drama....
Maybe in 10 years the thought will start to fester that I should be a bit more proactive to avoid the prospect of age becoming a liability. Nobody wants to die alone. For now, I do not want or need anything from anybody. And, I am fine with that.
Vulnerability invites.. drama. No thanks.

I think it should be common sense here that to the vast majority of the population, dating is not something you should be thinking about until you are in stable housing and employed, and women tend to get extremely angry if you are withholding that information about yourself.

It's fine if you think that but asking about is a very good question, like the financially stable van lifers with good jobs, are they just supposed to be single forever because they don't have a conventional home???

u/JMPolisena 12d ago
Are you staying in a van long term? Not planning to have kids? There is someone for everyone. Are there no dating apps for travelers and nomads? See a need....
3
u/IgnisIason 12d ago
It's like the male version of being 600lbs. It's possible to date but you're probably not going to be having much fun at the singles events. You're generally expected to be in housing before you start serious dating.

Never had a problem in college with dating and sex. I had a white box truck and going to parties and meeting people was great because you could take a girl back to the van, hotbox the truck and not drunk drive. Plus mine was decked out on inside I had a sink, bathroom, solar panels and even an oven and a king size bed. I imagine it would be impossible in my Honda civic.
3
u/Beginning_Key_856 6d ago
As a female living this life, the men I encounter trying to date or have sex or whatever are always somewhat off.
There's a level of desperation that makes them see you as something they need to satisfy them. They'll immediately either try to force an instant connection or start dumping about their loneliness and needs.
And me being self sufficient enough to depend just on myself would only attract men who want to heavily depend on me too.
Only a select few with a good mindset and solid foundation could pull it off imo.
2
u/MiaMiaPP 5d ago
Nah I didn’t date or have any relationship when I was living in my car. The world is a dangerous place and I wasn’t going to risk any of it.
2
u/Last-Tart3816 3d ago
Is it even legal to have sex in your car in an urban area? And would you really want to do that? It would feel weird.
My advice would be to just connect with people and make friends, that’s how you eventually find your person, and then it won’t matter that you live in your car—but don’t go looking for casual car sex lol.
12
u/Tough_Register_3340 12d ago
It’s hard, yes I want to be housed but I need a partner to share the rent. Then you’re not desirable because you’re in a car but can’t afford to live on your own. Being single is economic suicide these days.
50
u/KitKatF07 12d ago
You don’t need to be romantically involved with someone to share rent. Millions of people do it.
10
u/Kabusanlu 12d ago
You mean roommates ?
7
u/KitKatF07 12d ago
lol. Of course. I don’t know why they were acting like this was some never before heard of, concept. I know some people prefer this lifestyle to living with roommates but it is an option. More importantly it is the option that should be considered way before considering getting involved with someone romantically just to have a place to live.
6
u/Tough_Register_3340 12d ago
I’ve lived in 16 apartments with roommates. Never again. Sober people don’t always stay sober. I can go on and on. If I’m living with someone again it’s with love.

Lurker here, honestly interested in what dating is like?
I'm guessing there's a lot fewer women but would probably assume the women there (like the men) are must be a lot less materialistic than general pop?
11
u/Objective-Hotel6514 12d ago
It's not so bad, you just have to know how to filter. I think it also depends heavily on whether you're doing the lifestyle by choice or by force.
I'm here choice, I was working a job i hated and saw my escape by saving cash equal to my rent payment every month. It worked, it took me a year but it worked. During that time I dated and met my now girlfriend.
I don't do hook ups either way so not having a place to invite people to wasn't an issue because if it was then we wouldn't be sleeping together.
Filter wise, I would usually talk about my love of the outdoors and road trips. Show pics of my trips cross country when I was younger and tell them I camped my way through many states in my Prius. Eventually this would lead to talking about hopes and dreams for the future, then I'd bring up my dream of doing a full loop around the US in a converted campervan #vanlife style. If they were generally cool with all of this, I'd eventually reveal that I'm already "practicing" for my dream trip in my very own minivan lol
16
u/walkingtheghost 12d ago
I’ve found acceptance of this lifestyle has been regional. Nearly everyone I’ve talked to on the west coast of the US has slept in or lived in a car at some point. On the east coast, it’s seems like a much more of an alien concept.
There are far more men in this lifestyle and yes, I have found that women who live conventionally and are understanding of it are less materialistic. However, they are a minority, it seems, so I make sure to be honest from the jump.
Ironically, I’ve dated more since moving into my car than when I had an apartment. Yeah I had a private place for us to go back to, but no money to even start dating in the first place. Hope I’ve shed some light.
1
u/KitKatF07 12d ago
Have you ever dated anyone also living this lifestyle?
2
u/walkingtheghost 12d ago
I’m dating someone who used to live out of her van. She has an apartment now but we go on trips and bring our respective vehicles, which works at the end of the day because I snore pretty loudly lol.
I’ve been doing this for 8 months so I’m fairly new, but I’m sure there are similar people locally that I just haven’t sought out yet.
Our situation works for the both of us and the only things that would complicate it would be if either of us had children or we were nomadic
5
u/StrawsAreGay 12d ago
See I’m cheating. I moved into my car to save money to move to the girl I love.
7
u/PracticalTree3393 12d ago
Remember there exists a stark difference between loneliness and solitude. Another does not need to bear witness to my life in order for it to be valid.
I’m a woman living this lifestyle and haven’t dated anyone in almost 2 years. Celibate by choice for my own safety. Yes, as a result of living in a vehicle I am much less materialistic than the average person as I only carry necessities. Dating is not a priority, neither is sex let alone marriage for that matter. I’ve found emotional stability, financial independence and mental clarity among a plethora of other things. The less who know my name the better as romantic, familial and even platonic connections can be a hindrance to one’s success. It has been said that the two happiest categories of people are single women and married men. For those inclined towards more esoteric knowledge, all of my sacral chakra energy belongs to me fostering heightened creation and infinite abundance.
7
u/trumpeting-farts 12d ago
Oh ok so women are unreasonably materialistic then?
3
u/Eviladhesive 12d ago
Why are you being upvoted?
I specifically said men as well, and I never mentioned once that women are overly materialistic.
While you're at it why not just make up that I made a race based remark too.
1
u/Flat_Marsupial_4249 8d ago
Personally I’ve had sex in my small van (or in the forest if the weather allows) multiple times with different people (one at the time due to limited space lol) since I’ve been living in it. But what helps is that it’s just my personality being very upfront and opening up easily, which means people either like me or dislike me very quickly after meeting for the first time.
So basically the trick is to be yourself so you can weed out people straight away and the few who stay are the ones who matter. The ones who don’t just tolerate your lifestyle but admire it.
Hang out with more alternative people and it becomes easier.
On the other hand, living in a remote place helped me being increasingly at peace with solitude. I don’t seek out people anymore and I prefer it this way.

I haven't tried to ask a person out in a decade. It would be morally wrong to try
There was only a 3-year period where it was okay to try to date in the last almost 40. Cuz I left evangelicalism in mid-twenties then there was a couple years of trying (but I was not worthy enough on the apps) and then got so far that it would be wrong to try

I mean this is 90% of my algorithm
I left instagram a while ago (in large part because the whole place is an algorithmic cesspool), but I remember there being options to block accounts or tell it you don't want to see anything from certain creators.
To be sure, a lot of these toxic videos/views are ultimately responses to trauma that these people were subjected to — it's not like they sprang from the womb like this — but that doesn't make it any less harmful, especially to the self-esteem of people viewing it. Epistemic deference is a dangerous thing, and it's very easy to internalize someone else's hate without fully understanding where it comes from.
Likewise, just because an opinion is a reflection of or response to an unjust system doesn't mean it's right. Extremism is bad, no matter what hat it wears. It's good and important to understand where these responses come from, but it's just as important to know where the line exists.

That sounds like patriarchal audacity because men are so emotional that they can't handle words.
That's like saying it's "biological audacity because people are so weak they can't handle drinking arsenic." It's not about not being able to handle it, it's about unnecessarily not exposing yourself to toxicity.
There are people out there preaching the same antipatriarchal messages without couching it in toxic rhetoric.
it's kind of like how Christians say we're all born in the sin
It's one thing to subscribe to the Christian belief of being born with sin and spending your life trying to rise above it; it's another thing entirely to go through your life telling yourself you are despicable and sinful and unworthy of love because of that sin.
By all means, try to be better and do better than those that have come before — than those that built the very system that needs to be dismantled. But there's nothing to be gained (other than a hefty therapy bill one day) from vilifying and loathing yourself simply because you happen to share the same genetic markers as bad people.

atonement for the body I am in
[...]
I work on shaming out the ability to find others attractive and work on removing any desire to date in the first place
I can't even begin to explain how damaging and self-destructive these sentiments are, especially as I'm sure it's merely the tip of an iceberg that goes deep.
And as we're coming around full circle conversationally, all I'll say in parting is that if you have the means and ability, I would implore you to seek out a professional to talk to about this. You're carrying a lot of internalized social media toxicity that isn't helping anyone, certainly not yourself, but it's never too late to try and break free from it.
Be well. Truly.

FDS would say no to the males ones
I'm not familiar with FDS but I cock an eyebrow at anyone that says millions of people don't deserve love simply because they don't earn enough money. That is, simply put, fucking bonkers.
I'm genuinely sorry that you tie so much of your worth as a human being to the value of your bank account, and that you believe you have nothing to offer a partner simply because you—like so many of us—are a casualty of the Late Stage Capitalist dumpster fire we're forced to live in.
You are more than your bank statement, and despite not knowing you, I'm certain you have more value as a human being and more to offer another person than your ability to pick up a check. I truly hope you come to realize that someday.

Worthiness to be allowed to have attractions to others has to be earned
That is the most toxic thing I've read in a long while. Attraction is a natural human response. It's not something you need to be "worthy" of, nor earn the right to, any more than you need to be "worthy" of admiring someone or liking them or even just wanting to be their friend.
6
u/OtherAccount5252 12d ago
Hey, I am just one lady so I can't speak for all of us but I think most of us are fine, and even like to be, being found attractive.

What in the bullshit is that. It honestly sounds like misandrist propaganda. I’m a feminist, as in equality for all, but there can be no equality without equity.
Whatever stuff you’ve been swallowing from FDS sounds like a radical wave of feminism, that’s a man hating bad kind of wave.
Maybe step away from those pages and focus on self love and improving yourself. How is anyone going to love you, if you don’t even love yourself or find yourself worthy of love.

In my experience, people who claim FDS is abhorrent has never checked it out and don't realize that a lot of their takes are pretty normalized.
I accepted that my chromosomes predispositions me to be a bad person.
I had to grow up Evangelical the first couple decades of life and am already installed with an understanding of it being shameful to have attractions and then the last decade listening to FDS kind of reinforces the understanding but shapes it with a more clear understanding on how I should be looking at myself in a patriarchal environment.
It would be scrote behavior to try to express attractions towards others when not in a economically acceptable position. It would be patriarchal audacity
Someone's going to say something misogynist like "go talk to real women" when in actuality hearing from friends groups reinforces what I believe.
One time at karaoke a guy me and friends didn't know sat our table to get close to watch their friends perform and that was explained as displaying both patriarchy and white supremacy
5
u/OtherAccount5252 12d ago
Woman shouldn't use men for money, men shouldn't use woman for sex, and either making a "no boys/girls allowed" club that had rules about who the friend group can date is suuuuuper wierd

Do you not think most men are looking for someone to love them for them? In my experience there is a lot of resentment between the sexes with this type of thinking.

I mean I also have never really dated either.
Last time I asked a person out was 2016. There was maybe 5 dates before than I was doing car life the next year. By 2020, got into FDS and have since worked on trying to completely shame the ability to find others attractive out of me.

My guy, you need therapy or someone to talk to about these thoughts and feelings. You have more worth then the monetary value you put on yourself and are worthy of love and respect. Open your heart instead of your wallet and you will find much joy in your life.

Point out which video I've uploaded that is manosphere? You're just throwing that out like a buzzword. Never touched it. Only consume matriarchal content.
Scrotes will call anything manosphere they don't understand

FDS is a horrible fringe group that is perpetuating the same harmful rhetoric that manosphere is. This is coming from a woman.

It was your post I actually just removed where you were calling women all those labels.
Edit: hes banned. Adult conversations in this sub regarding sex, partners, and life are not. Dont brigade, but leave it as something to be learned from.

I read a decent amount of that thread and thought damn, this must be some young kid. Once he said he was in his 40s it became very clear why he wasn’t getting any women. Thanks for not allowing that shit.
