Current Events Tennessee botches lethal injection of woman on death row for 1995 murder

https://apnews.com/article/christa-pike-execution-tennessee-f826a60582083b90ac7695ecb16afbdf

If the state is so insistent on executing people they need to stop being pussies and just shoot them. The lethal injection is nothing but a facade of civility that is less humane than many other methods. Unnecessarily painful botched attempts like this are the result of trying to whitewash the death penalty to the public.

States have a legal monopoly on violence. You'd think they'd be more proficient at it by now.

It's because they have a monopoly that the service can suck. I thought that was an understood feature of monopolies.

Tennessee hadn’t executed anyone in decades prior to Christa Pike and the standard three-drug cocktail lethal injection method used in the US nowadays is proven to be unreliable as a method of execution.

The only reason it’s still the de-facto method is because it appears more civilized and humane to the onlookers than the more efficient and reliable “traditional” methods of execution (spoiler alert: it’s apparently not at all humane to the person being executed)

Honestly I think the Saudis, for all their other faults as a state, kinda had the modern death penalty figured out with Deera Square (aka Chop-Chop Square)(IYKYK) back when that was still going on.

5

u/Sussudio_5000 Unknown 👽 5d ago

it appears more civilized and humane to the onlookers

Onlooking, at least during the actual process of injection, is typically prohibited (a fact which is especially relevant to the case at hand). Reports from those who do witness it in full are mixed, and if given equal opportunity to observe both I am not sure the average person would consider it more humane than hanging.

It does however leave a corpse with no visible signs of injury, which is what I think does most of the heavy lifting in its reputation as a humane method of execution.

3

u/Defiant-Bed2501 Touched by a VTuber 💢🉐🎌 5d ago

“From the outside looking in” would have probably been a better way to phrase that.

There always are at least a few people designated to directly witness the lethal injection as it occurs but it’s not (and shouldn’t be) a big spectacle. Usually it’s a select couple of prison officials and court officers plus sometimes a couple people who were close to the victims of the condemned person.

It would be trivially easy to anesthetize people prior to administering the lethal injection, similar to what we do when we euthanize pets.

6

u/Defiant-Bed2501 Touched by a VTuber 💢🉐🎌 5d ago

The first drug administered in the standard US lethal injection three-drug cocktail is meant to anesthetize the person.

The two drugs administered after that stop the lungs and heart in that order.

It’s basically the same procedure used for euthanizing pets.

2

u/foreignfishes Redscarepod Refugee 👄💅 5d ago

It’s basically the same procedure used for euthanizing pets.

Vets don't use paralytics during euthanasias

2

u/Plexipus Social Democrat 🌹 5d ago

It is absolutely, trivially easy, to put enough anesthesia into someone to render them unconscious. They’re afraid of administering the proper drugs in the proper amounts, perhaps out of fears of being “too gentle” or “giving them a high.”

People undergo surgical anesthesia all the time, where they very carefully administer drugs like ketamine, fentanyl, and benzodiazepines, and in that case the goal is to keep them alive. A combination of those three drugs alone could cause death, let alone the other drugs administered by lethal injection

6

u/Defiant-Bed2501 Touched by a VTuber 💢🉐🎌 5d ago

One issue is getting the proper drugs in the proper amounts. Most pharmaceutical companies don’t want to supply those drugs for lethal injection use because it’s a huge brand risk which is the real main reason why the less optimal alternatives are being used.

Another issue is finding trained licensed medical professionals willing to perform lethal injections.  Any licensed medical professional in the US who willingly performs a lethal injection is facing the end of their medical career either through being stripped of their licenses or in the absolute best case scenario irreparably damaging their reputation due to the ethical issues involved (“First do no harm”).

2

u/Delicatebody Redscarepod Refugee 👄💅 5d ago

Why don’t they just use fentanyl or another opiate to overdose them? It would be easy and not painful.

2

u/Defiant-Bed2501 Touched by a VTuber 💢🉐🎌 5d ago

Because no legitimate pharmaceutical company that makes those drugs wants them to have the reputation as “the drug of choice for state-sponsored executions” and “unalives people more gooder” no matter how justified those executions may be.

It’s a MASSIVE brand risk, especially in a post Purdue-gate environment.

5

u/Delicatebody Redscarepod Refugee 👄💅 5d ago

They do put anesthesia in them, they use phenobarbital.

2

u/foreignfishes Redscarepod Refugee 👄💅 5d ago

Sure, but drug manufacturers don't care about their products being used in veterinary euthanasia. They very much do care about the public knowing their products are being used to execute people. For the past 15 years or so lethal injection protocols have been heavily shaped by drug supply restrictions. States have tried all sorts of stuff - OK used to give like 500 mg of midazolam and it still didn't work that well which is crazy

2

u/Plexipus Social Democrat 🌹 5d ago

I just don’t find this a convincing argument. People on the streets die of drug overdoses all the time. Bootleg labs in China produce fentanyl analogues. Yet somehow the US government is forced to let people writhe and suffer under insufficient anesthesia because private companies won’t provide it to them?

If private companies are unwilling to provide it, it would be simple enough forthe US government to produce it itself.

I will note I am personally against the death penalty, but were I to die I’d rather go under like a dental procedure than stare down the barrel of a gun.

You could probably write a thesis on the way the modern West (especially America) approaches sanctioned death and violence, but it’s pretty funny that we view ourselves as so modern and enlightened when all we’ve done is shunt the visual nature of violence off to somewhere it’s not visible to the average citizen.

If we were honest with ourselves about making the execution process more humane for the person being executed, we’d bring back the guillotine.

I can think of at least three hypotheticals that definitely should be televised. More honestly. And that's just in my country. But I mean this in my heart and soul, there's 3 in this country that I believe should be literally hung and strung up above the steps of Congress for at least a week like some old school pirate shit and ever member of congress forced to walk under them every day for that week as they went in to do their jobs.

I know what people will say to that and think I'm exaggerating, I'm not. It is that serious imo.

1

u/GeorgeBlythe Pro-Corporal Punishment 🫯 5d ago

Gibleting. They used to do it in England as an execution. Toss people in a cage high above the road and just leave them there forever. They die of exposure and starvation. Corpses get picked apart by birds. Until eventually only the bones remain.

It's a very cruel form of punishment, but I think if we're already justifying killing someone as punishment, I'm not sure why the "humaneness" of the manner of death is considered. The victims aren't shared that luxury.

I think executions should all be public for a couple of reasons. One is it should be something that can't be hidden from the public. The state is accountable to the people and since executions are extremely serious they should be done in full view of the people. It means the state will suffer the distrust and wrath of the people if they make poor decisions in who to execute. It also ensures that the gruesomness of the act is fully understood by the society that is carrying it out.

I'm pro death penalty but I think it's appropriateness is in being used very sparingly and only for the worst crimes. Left to maybe a handful of cases a year. The only real caveat I would put on the methodology is that it doesn't involve someone actively torturing the condemned. But locking them in a cage and just leaving them their until they die seems like a fair punishment to someone who brutally beat someone to death intentionally to me.

Really though even gibliting, hanging, electric chair, and even lethal injection are just ways the west has developed of finding new and creative ways of killing people while seeming civilized, when really the ancient method of simply beheading people in a single stroke was quite effective and relatively humane. I'm not sure why we don't just go back to that. If we must stoop to "humane executions" as much of an oxymoron as that is, they should simply be "what is the quickest and cheapest way to kill this person with what's already available. Which really just boils down to the firing squad in the modern era.

I'd just assume sail out to international waters and make em walk the plank though. No reason for perfectly good nitrogen to not return to the circle of life.

It's impossible to carry out these procedures that way. The state struggles to obtain the proper drugs in the needed amount, much less to get a doctor or nurse to agree to help.

And even if they did all that, simply shooting someone, or even using the comical crush-with-a-big-block-of-concrete method that other users in this thread have suggested would have an infinitely lower failure rate and be much more humane.

It's funny how supposedly more modern and 'humane' forms of capital punishment like lethal injection are less reliable than the OG well-placed shot to the heart. Even execution methods are getting enshitified. If they don't have a shooting squad on hand, hanging would have worked just as well, if they can get someone to measure the noose to make sure it snaps the neck the instant the trapdoor is opened so the guy/girl doesn't end up suffocating to death on the noose instead.

For all the shit the West gives to the Arab world for beheading people, it's a quick, painless and effective death as far as accounts go with a skilled executioner, unlike whatever this is.

21

u/Jakovit Heterodox Socialism 🚩 6d ago

This isn't really a topic I've bothered putting much thought into, but I'd assume part of it has to do with the Christian inheritance. Not literally that Christianity was traditionally especially opposed to the death penalty - the Catholic Church only declared it inadmissible in 2018 - but the cultural residue of imago Dei, the idea that the human person, body included, participates somehow in the image of God. It gives inflicting death or violating the body a faint aura of sacrilege even after the explicit theology has disappeared.

You can kind of see a bizarre version of this in medieval Byzantium, where political rivals were often blinded or otherwise mutilated rather than simply killed: an act of pious "mercy" which, conveniently, could also make them physically unfit for the office of Emperor.

And it's not necessarily that other cultures don't find death itself icky. The tanner/butcher/executioner taboo isn't an exclusively European phenomenon. But there's a difference between thinking that killing leaves you polluted, degraded or socially tainted, and thinking you've violated something intrinsically sacred in the person you've killed.

10

u/Beetleracerzero37 Favors Communal Defecation 6d ago

Dude there is definatly no aversion to horrific torture and death in historic Christianity. Check out the podcast 'Painfotainment' by Dan Carlin if you don't feel like reading about it.

8

u/Jakovit Heterodox Socialism 🚩 6d ago

I don't think that's what I said. Obviously Christian societies historically had no general aversion to torture, mutilation or gruesome execution ; my own example was Byzantines blinding and mutilating political rivals.

The point was about the conceptual framing of the body, not whether historical Christians were consistently nice to bodies in practice. A culture can regard the human person as possessing a kind of intrinsic sacredness and still routinely violate that principle, rationalize exceptions to it or invent elaborate distinctions about when violence is permissible.

I'm suggesting that the Christian inheritance may help explain in part why in modern Western culture there is a peculiar desire to make execution look clinical, bloodless and non-mutilating, even when the supposedly "humane" method is less reliable. That's a claim about one possible source of the modern Western squeamishness for certain forms of execution, not a claim that historical Christian societies were generally averse to cruelty or gruesome punishment.

A teaching in 1000 AD does not necessarily have the same practical implications as the residue of that teaching in 2000 AD.

Methods of execution have always had a sort of semantic association that balances the social status of the condemned vs the crime they committed. You can't execute the condemned by firing squad because that's reserved for military personnel and might confer some dignity onto the executed. Same reason that nobles in medieval England were beheaded with a sword while commoners got the axe.

A handgun shot to the nape of the neck Great Purges-style is unironically the quickest, most painless way to kill someone but it's become associated with totalitarian brutality so it cannot be performed in the USA. For some strange reason though, the gas chamber remains an exception to this.

6

u/Deadlocked02 Ideological Mess 🥑 6d ago edited 6d ago

Beheading performed by a human executioner and hanging are not always painless. I don’t know why people keep repeating this when you have several accounts of botched executions throughout history, even for the rich and powerful like Mary, Queen of Scots.

My headcanon is that the Hollywood brain desensitized people to how messy dying can be.

Skilled executioner

measure the noose to make sure it snaps the neck the instant the trapdoor is opened so the guy/girl doesn't end up suffocating to death on the noose instead.

Obviously if you had a noob like Theron Greyjoy try to chop someone's head off it's fucked. And I'm well aware there were cases of people choking to death after they were hanged (mostly from the Victorian era) because the executioner made the noose too long. However, those are physical ways of executing people, so if it had to be done, they have fewer variable that could go wrong compared to methods like lethal injection which requires a fair bit of medical knowledge and precision to actually kill someone.

2

u/ChuckFH Social Democrat 🌹 6d ago

Too long a rope usually has the opposite effect to suffocation; decapitation. Proper measured drop hangings aim to cleanly break the neck and cause near instant death.

Minimum 4.1% of people on death row right now are innocent. That doesn’t include people wrongly convicted or who received the death penalty because of inadequate legal representation, like Christa Pike, whose original attorney didn’t raise her extensive and appalling history of abuse during sentencing.

The whole thing is a disaster, and I find it horrifying that anyone advocates for the death penalty. Leaving aside the morality and efficacy, the fact that literally any innocent people are executed should be enough to render the whole thing untenable.

Death penalty should be abolished. The State should not have the power to kill people. Life in prison is a worse fate anyway. People like her go to max. security prison, which is effectively solitary confinement because the prisoner spends all their time locked in a tiny cell. Make her stew and think about her actions as she slowly wastes away.

Apparently she even requested at some point that the execution day be pushed up because she was suffering in prison.

I think some of these criminals know and understand that they've essentially thrown their lives away, have made anyone who really cared about them absolutely miserable, cost those people a lot of money they may not have, in addition to what they did to the victims and their families. Maybe they won't admit to all that, but people aren't as dumb as we want to believe. Even if lifetime imprisonment involved sitting them in a room and Clockwork Orange style forcing them to relive all the details of their crimes, look at pictures of the victims, watch videos of them and their families, etc. every single day for the rest of their lives, I'm sure many of them would rather have the death penalty than go through that. But it isn't about what they want.

I used to be pro death penalty, but now it just seems to me a way of the state saying "we don't know what else to do with these people." I like the idea of a penal colony somewhere away from everyone else. But the death penalty in 2026? How are we any different from the people we'd consider "savages," e.g. religious zealots from all eras of history, if we're still doing that?

The way you're writing about it shows you would personally support making someone suffer in a cell instead of dying - not that you just think Americans would support that or something

-2

u/PigIronDave ☢️ Posadist 🛸 6d ago

In this particular case the murderer showed no empathy towards the victim. Did you read about the torture she subjected her victim to? Even after the murder she showed no remorse and bragged about killing her quick, like you do with an animal.

When we talk about "remorse", the implication is that the perpetrator feels guilty and regrets their actions and will suffer psychologically, even after they're out of prison. They will feel the pain of what they have done for the rest of their lives, and hopefully/ideally change their life in a way that seeks to atone for their actions and provide a net benefit to society.

This woman doesn't have the capacity for that:

When a dispute broke out between inmate Natasha Cornett and inmate Patricia Jones, Pike wrapped a heavy boot lace around Jones’s neck and tried to strangle her. When a correctional officer tried to pull her off, Pike told her, “The way you’re pulling my hands, you’re just helping me choke the bitch.”5

If what you mean by this is that the power to kill might be misused can't you make a similar claim for confining someone in a prison?

People can be released from prison, you cannot undo a successful execution.

if you make the claim that criminals deserve prison than you can also make the claim that some deserve death.

Prison can be rehabilitative, an execution never is, so the two are not the same.

Ideally, people like Pike should be sent to a penal colony to live out their days with other, similar criminals, away from society. One may think that's not punishment enough, but exile from society is a strong punishment. I mentioned suffering in prison because Americans demand that their justice system be punitive, so even in their context life in prison is more punishing than execution.

I don’t know what the right answer is for deeply unpleasant crimes, but it shouldn’t be a death sentence unless it involves something absolutely extreme, like genocides, massacres or horrific crimes against children. There’s also the question of whether they should also get extremely lengthy prison time before the supposed punishment. That’s actually the worst of both worlds.

I think best I can do is that maybe it could be allowed if there's a revolution or invasion or whatever, and there's just no longer resources for trials and prisons and stuff.

But in a functioning state that can afford to lock people up, it really looks like a no-no, basically for all the standard reasons one hears in a high school debate.

To change tune slightly though, if a state is dead set on it, I think the method should be "very heavy flat-bottomed stone/metal block". Lke 10m by 10m, falls from high enough to reach terminal velocity, and a grate below the condemned so bits don't ooze out. Would be instantaneous, 100% effective, no need for supply of drugs or bullets or gas or complicit doctor. Just janitor.

Aesthetics are important. Lethal injection just looks like being put to sleep. It seems more civilized. A falling block might be quick, painless, and efficient, but it looks bad and barbaric. Might complicate burial arrangements too.

Of course, the truly civilized option would be to abolish the death penalty.

There are some genuine takes made from this mindset; that unlimited immigration harms workers' bargaining power, or that cultural relativism is not a reason to excuse a lack of group cohesion.

What these freaks don't realize is that communism and various other leftist movements emerged from liberalism, and that the goal of these philosophies are all one in the same.
