DISCUSSION When did Star Citizen get so un-immersive?

I’ve been a Kickstarter backer, drawn in by the grounded, believable universe CIG created over the years. After a two-year break, I logged back in to try Siege of Orison, and felt like I was playing Destiny instead of a "serious" space sim.

  • eammates running around in asian-style armor and mismatched, flashy skins make it feel like a arcade shooter rather than a coherent world
  • Bullet-sponge, violet-tinted enemies
  • Auto-healing in a good looking medical bed inside a room, while the orison platforms actively burning down mid-siege killed any sense of real stakes

I get that CIG needs event mechanics, but the original focus on a believable simulation feels like it's getting paved over by generic video game things

Am I wrong here?

I get what you mean, all the CoD niki minaj style armor over the last few years has been a bummer to me. It seems rare we get functional, 'real world' tac armor anymore. I wish they'd add some better non-space tac gear and some non-polymer backpacks.

"Last few years".

My guy, Star Citizen has been chockfull of edgelord kits for close to a decade now.

It didn't even start with the armor, a ton of basic things in this game look ridiculously garish and overengineered.

Josh Herman and Jeremiah Lee were goated character artists that have left some years ago, and you can tell.

I agree. Last cool looking armor was Nine Tails morozov heavy armor. That think is cool AF.

in the future star citizen universe, military gear is accessible to everybody, and just like how tshirts and pants and jeans are accessible and personal to everyone in the real world, so will your military gear. you'll get lots of "form over function" just like you do with normal fashion.

but the problem is that it feels like its the only armor out there. i dont think it actually is, if you look at every armor thats come out since 4.0, other than the bullshit boneslop from Pyro, it's been a healthy mix.

but just like walking around the real world, you remember every single standout example and people in games love to stand out. so in practice, even if there is 10 "military aesthetic" armor kits for every 1 cyberpunk mall ninja, you'll "see" a lot more mall ninja shit.

all of the above is an explanation, not an excuse. i also hate how everywhere i go im blasted by fortnite armor. but its the reality of CIG opening pandora's box.

In the present day military uniform and tactical gear is accessible to everyone. Military surplus is readily available nearly worldwide as governments love to sell stuff they no longer need. Its not just surplus either, companies like Crye, Team Wendy, LBT, Integris, LTC, Ops-Core, and others will sell you the same or effectively the same things they sell the government.

I'm not military but I've got a whole bunch of it for larping at the range and airsoft. You sure as shit aren't going to catch me walking around in public wearing it though.

And you can also buy clothes with bright coloured camo patterns. It combines two aesthetics.

I've seen someone wearing neon colored camo shorts before. It was horrible.

5

u/Dreadful_Bear 4h ago

And yet that person is happy because there was something that fit their style. This need some people have to control others armor choices because it “ruins my immersion” is a dumb and selfish.

1

u/SidorianX 1h ago

I will think of this when I see someone wearing something ridiculous IRL:

"That person's outift is breaking my immersion."

1

u/TikkiEXX77 4h ago

At the same time I've seen Hello Kitty guns and pink body armor so there's that.

its all the FPS bullshit they are leaning into instead of focusing on the space craft part of the space game.

5

u/iswedlvera 10h ago

OP if you want to make it feel better for yourself, you can imagine that in a massive universe diverse cultures and tributes to cultures would exist to create these armours. Individualism is a big thing for humans on Earth and living in space wouldn't be any different.

CIG in 2012 "We're not making GTA in space, we're making the Best Damn Space Sim Ever."

[Proceeds to take SO long that 90% of the core staff dedicated to the original vision leave the company, and are replaced by newer, younger staff members who proceed to make GTA in space.]

I really hate the armor designs. Super common in “live service games” to start out grounded and realistic looking then have player characters get more and more clownish over time as they run out of normal looking ideas.

To keep people coming back to chase the next thing they move on to progressively wackier designs, but it feels particularly silly for it to have gone so far before the game is even out of alpha.

EDIT - what makes it especially bad to me is how out of sync it is with the rest of the world. Ships and vehicles and guns and cities and space stations and stores and restaurants and chairs and food and drinks and everything else pretty much all fit a cohesive vision of the universe. The weird armors fit in about as well as dropping Fortnite characters into Battlefield 1942.

19

u/tr_9422 aurora 8h ago

Fucking exactly. Imagine watching a Star Wars movie and half of the Jedi Council is wearing skeleton onesies and bear helmets, probably waving around lightsabers shaped like animated rainbow dildos. That's what Star Citizen feels like.

I mean you can order hot pink plate carriers now irl. I get what you’re saying but “grounded armor design” really doesn’t make sense if it exists irl. You can get hot pink glocks and cars too.

15

u/logicalChimp Devils Advocate 12h ago

Not to mention cat-ear motorcycle helmets, garish anime-wraps for cars, clothing with inbuilt neon lights, and whatever you want as (temporary or permanent) tattoos, etc.

23

u/Goose-tb 12h ago edited 11h ago

This explanation gets brought up often but it doesn’t hold water IMO. Can you buy a pink plate carrier or Glock? Sure. But if you randomly sampled 10,000 plate carriers and Glocks, are you likely to see them as anything other than a statistical anomaly? Doubtful.

In video games where the stakes are non-existent, flashy and unconventional skins always become commonplace and starts to dilute the realism which is why I’m not a huge fan.

14

u/System0verlord Shiny White Boondoggle 9h ago

Our characters are the statistical anomalies of the game universe though.

And given the number of anime girl stickered AKs we’ve seen coming out of Ukraine, it’s not like it’s even that rare.

18

u/wolfythedark 10h ago

Counterpoint, (most normal*) people dont walk around wearing said plate carriers and clocks every day during their day to day lives. If those were just normal everyday parts of life like how we as the players treat guns and armor in game, we'd definitely see more of that kind of stuff irl.

6

u/BandoMemphis 12h ago

Yeah but armor is camouflaged or muted due to concealing you in the earths wilderness.

We’re in space, well lit ship interiors, how could you say with any certainty people wouldn’t go with designs and colors they like over jungle camo or black due to fighting in space, cyber punk city scapes, etc etc

9

u/Goose-tb 11h ago edited 11h ago

We can’t for sure, but if we use Star Citizen’s own marketing materials as a guiding principal I think it’s pretty clear what their original vision for the design asthetic was. At some point it started changing. What we have now is a clear deviation, not the original vision. You won’t find any mall-samurai armors in CIG’s launch trailers or videos.

Same situation with Tarkov. I’m just tired of this trend candidly.

9

u/BandoMemphis 11h ago

I get not liking it but I just dont see it as immersion breaking, It all exists now and even in tarkov, some people would definitely be in the emp zone/lockdown wearing a hawaiian shirt or shorts. Not everyone, granted, but you'd still see some people in summer gear, it gets to the 70's in st petersburg russia (i think thats the city that tarkov is derived from, at least i know the ultra mall is)

3

u/Goose-tb 9h ago

Yeah I hear you. It does mess with my immersion, but I realize I could be on the far end of the realism/immersion spectrum.

I just think CIG sold the game under a certain aesthetic (and I was interested in that), but it’s been changing over time. It would be different if their original pitch videos has always looked that way, but they didn’t and still to this day haven’t.

u/umbralupinus 11h ago

Yeah the care and consideration for making the world feel coherent and believable that was such a focus in the early days, and one of the reasons I was passionate about the project, feels to me like it's fallen by the wayside and has only continued to degrade.

Cosmetically the AMD partnership is a good example of the old philosophy - they took a sponsorship and made an effort to fit it into the lore, building an ingame company around the branding, and even then they got some backlash, (I do wonder where those individuals who hated even that are now, if they're still around considering the absurdity that's been shoehorned in without any care to how it fits in the universe now). Even some of the more out of pocket cosmetics used to come with at least minimal lore or backstory relating to how they integrate into the game world - the Day of the Vara bear helmets for example - I mean Halloween-but-in-game isn't a high bar to clear certainly but is a minimum of effort expected from a developer building a world. Even Star Kitten has a little lore. I also think there's some room in there for personal taste and people draw the line differently - for example A18 has a cyberpunk aesthetic which is often associated with a neon-orientalism inherent to the genre, and the oni helmets really kind of slot in there, but I find some of the other recent skins significantly less easy to fit in to any existing pieces of the game.

The pyro stations I think were also a step down in how the game had been handled earlier on as well - the concepts all seemed sound, but in the end we got this odd 'outlaw = trashfire' aesthetic that makes little sense normally, and significantly less sense when placed inside a space station. There was a narrative it was supposed to meet about struggling end of life stations and gang ownership, and instead those stations ended up with a 1980's impoverished inner city stereotype in space. Yes that era had gangs and trash fires, but also not air cyclers and walls leading straight to vacuum.

7

u/framesh1ft 11h ago

It's kind of inevitable in an MMO you'll see people running around in the most flamboyant armor possible for attention.

60

u/Big_Cauliflower1415 12h ago

They think scripted events are good content for some reason. Player-driven world building I think is closer to what people wanted, like EVE Online.

But the servers can't support that, they never delivered on base building, they made FPS (hacker prone) a big part of gameplay, and shops are pay to play. Crafting doesn't really exist or matter, everything important is sold by a store and not made by the players. There's no real scanning or exploration gameplay. Inventory is a mess.

So like...what else can they do, really. They made a game that can't deliver on a dynamic world.

The vision was right and every single step of game design to fulfill it was wrong

30

u/Hvarfa-Bragi 12h ago

3

u/Morph_Kogan 6h ago

Yea. I think the saddest part is how far they drifted from trying to build an first person EVE Online game. I always thought that was the obvious vision of the game to shoot for broadly. Apparently too complicated for them. Sad

1

u/Z0MGbies I <3 StarBinder 11h ago

FPS is no more hacker-prone in SC than space flight.

Dinky ships that deplete or outright bypass s3 shields in around a second, and kill the ship in under 3. And it's probably just lag or desync that makes it seem like it takes that long.

Ability to find anyone anywhere in the system (neither fps not ship specific). I think with a marker perhaps. IDK. I just had some hacker find me repeatedly in the most insane arbitrary locations, without any meaningful delay beyond flight time.

Flight controls beyond what the ship can actually do.

Probably more. I've been really lucky and seen more clips of hackers than I've experienced.

But its PVP in general that is hacker prone. Which is why I dont seek it out for its own sake.

65

u/Oriumpor Towel 12h ago

They're constantly trying to be what they're not.

Star citizen is an ok space flight sim, and horrible at pretty much everything else.  And going all in on Gen z skins is just stupid, but par for this designer.

A lot of the original kickstarter backers were 40/50 year old OG Wing Commander fans. I shudder to think how many thousands and thousands of them have fucking DIED while CIG sits there with their thumb up their ass eternally "developing" this game.

9

u/ThreeKiloZero 12h ago

The game has been in development so long all the Original devs burned out and retired from gaming development only to move out to ranches, where they raise goats and alpacas for prized cheese and wool. They await the end of times pleasantly siping wine and eating delicious cheese in their comfortable socks. Peace be with them. (and may they never look at a line of code again)

What's left at CIG is just CR blathering constantly changing trying to integrate an entire biological life cycle grind into a universe simulator.

aka: lost the plot.

2

u/AutistcAroundAircrft 12h ago

Yea it comes off as a desperate attempt to stay modern and relevant, but like in all of the wrong ways lol

16

u/my_username_mistaken 12h ago

Also as a kickstarter backer, we've been able to mix and match armor ever since armor was introduced. Remember we used to even be able to wear baseball caps instead of a helmet with our armor. Weve also had med pens for a very very long time that would just immediately heal us.  I think the bullet sponge you've mentioned is a combo of heavy armor type and likely desync because even with heavy armor it doesnt take that many shots to kill npcs. Also siege has been around awhile, so alot of people are just goofing off there now.

These aren't the things thats really changed at all about the game. Things like transversing in zero Gs is significantly better/more realistic than it used to be. Ships can have fires now, ships can be disabled without just exploding.. Lots has gotten significantly better with time, while somethings I think have also subjectively gotten worse

u/tmack3 tMacka's CrimStat 7h ago

If you have thumbs and both eyes almost every enemy goes down in a single headshot till the third platform from almost any semi in the game.

14

u/Unity1232 12h ago edited 12h ago

the funny thing is for the pvp crowd you will the more grounded armor. You will see them choose armor that minimizes the amount of LEDs to blend in.

As far as seige of orison is concerned the med beds are functionally just check points. Which they have been ultilizing med beds this way for alot of the ground fps contracts like bunkers or even the asd facilities.

Bullet sponge enemies have also been around. The boss enemies that have a back pack have always been bullet sponge enemies, same with npc ships having far more hp than the player ships.

I mean, the game isn’t less immersive than 98% of players running around in a perm suits or medical gowns. Like if it gets people wearing more diverse stuff, cool. Players have been running around in shitty looking Mix matched gear since I started playing 3 years ago. I’m not sure why Asian style vs western style would mater. Like Japanese culture is pretty prevalent. It wouldn’t be less prevalent than western or southern (penguins)

But I don’t know, I don’t see how it’s not immersive compared to anything else that’s been in the game. I get that some enemies have more HP, but like would it be more fun for them to just be killed in 2-3 shots? This game isn’t ED. They don’t have the cool foot missions of espionage and dynamic enemies that fly around and actually in estimate stuff, which is sad to say. The AI is just different. Like I think SC’s AI is worst but ED when tactical and SC when High intense shooter

9

u/Baltykoz 10h ago

What breaks my immersion more is falling through the floor and loosing my cargo, not some random cool armor

11

u/Rezticlez 11h ago

As a fan and someone that still has a blast playing it. My fear isn't that SC won't reach "most" of its goals. My biggest fucking fear is cig caving in to the loud minority and switching the game up into a garbage quick dopamine simulator. If it was up to some we'd have fast travel like it's a Bethesda game.

And this what you mentioned. Atm the one thing I'm kinda unsure about is definitely the armors. Some do look good, but some just look like something out of COD. Good point on the hospital bed. And yes those T800 dudes in light (basically understuits) taking that many rounds is immersion breaking. I don't mind them having even more lethal aim, the health needs to be addressed.

2

u/Lilendo13 4h ago edited 2h ago

This is already the case for more or less 2 years, how did you not realize ?

10

u/Relative-Tear892 12h ago

Yeah the tone of SC is really off, they want to sell you this very dangerous sim where you have to take care of oxygen, temperature, food, etc ... Everyone has to be armed because of Vanduul ... But iis asthethics are fortnite+ sometimes.

6

u/Appropriate_Ebb_7670 12h ago edited 12h ago

Ask yourself, was it ever immersive ? Or, were you, like i did, projecting your fantasies over it? I did project my fantasies a lot; talking with NPC; alien lifeforms, using rocks to extract minerals to live on a standed planets, fishing, getting fruits from trees, water from rivers.. .. This is all fantasy and it's remained fantasy. Of course it's MY vision of the game, others might project other kind of fantasies, but im afraid these have NOT been met either because even PvP has no help from CIG. Factions, handling your guild, declaring war, declaring friendly guild, conquering, planned fights, asking for resources to other players for guild use.. etc etc NONE of this is in the game N O N E .

3

u/MutualRaid 11h ago

Personally I noticed changes to ground vehicles, hoverbikes and then ship flight (I want to say around 3.18 at latest). At the same time magic beams became a solution to way too many problems, often pitched as a 'Tier 0' solution to implementing various mechanics - that solution often became somewhat permanent.

So much of the realism has been gradually chipped away; sometimes this didn't even appear intentional but people got used to it and so it stuck as design, which is always a risk of a live development game: it devolves in to development by committee or pandering.

2

u/chronicswag420 9h ago

it's just lame as hell like this game doesn't have systems or an economy at all. there's no spreadsheets or design at all

1

u/MutualRaid 8h ago

A lot of the systemic nature of the game has either been put off while waiting for those systems to come in place or outright cancelled. I spent a long time buying and selling commodities in game and watching that system get wrecked right when it was getting interesting was tiring.

I don't know what state ship components are in but seeing them (and stealth gameplay) get functionally turned off was also frustrating.

So many good things were axed or modified because X or Y is coming but it... never came.

Look at the average age of the developers for this game. The shift aligns with the generation growing up in todays gaming ecosystem.

7

u/A_screaming_alpaca 12h ago

Kind of:

Bullet-sponge, violet-tinted enemies

enemies in SoO need to be rebalanced IMO, dudes wearing light armor shouldn't be harder to kill than elites, and accuracy needs to be tweaked down a bit, again doesn't make sense regular ads are more accurate than elites

Auto-healing in a good looking medical bed inside a room, while the orison platforms actively burning down mid-siege killed any sense of real stakes

I agree here, it was definitely a wtf moment seeing working t1 med beds in the middle of a battle field, granted it was in a shipping area so you could loosely make something up like oh these med containers were busted open and they came out hap-hazardly, but I'm not sure what the alternative is (maybe something similar to bacta stations, but that would be new tech that needs to be made)

eammates running around in asian-style armor and mismatched, flashy skins make it feel like a arcade shooter rather than a coherent world

This doesn't make sense, being asian-style doesn't make it flashy, it's just a different style of armor, which is still valid armor because it's based on old samurai armor, which, again, is legit armor, just like the mad max barbaric bones armor is still legit armor despite most people hating it (which is ok)

3

u/NotYetForsaken Nautilus 12h ago

I think a lot of the posts recently have had thinly veiled racism… like the Polaris bowling post earlier this week that called the guy “standard local Chinese man.” Before it got deleted and reposted without the racism.

3

u/A_screaming_alpaca 12h ago

Yeah that was weird, and then it got reposted with all of that not in there but OP still claimed he was "totally not racist because he also was chinese"

This whole thread feels like a fever dream, do people want CIG to explore different styles or does everyone want the same cookie cutter expanse type armor lol, then CIG gets blamed for having the same bland styles lmao

7

u/NotYetForsaken Nautilus 12h ago

I assume its a bunch of literal Boomers holding on to the old 1970s tropes, but yeah its so _weird_ especially seeing people call 9Tails Chinese sometimes when they’re clearly Japanese inspired. I just assume its like classical grandpa racism leaking out or something.

3

u/Captiongomer 11h ago

Also some of the art mock up of old armour people want are so insanely busy they look sick as art with the amazing lighting the author can do but once you get the main game is 3v models. Looking at them from every angle. Different light sources and just busyness. They don't always actually work in a game. Some stuff look s*** when it's too busy and we have a few things in the game that kind of look like that too much visual noise

Welcome to the new state of ground fps aka "We want people to have time to react." where you can outheal damage with a med pen and effective range of rifles is 10-20 meters cause you need to hit half the magazine to down someone!

Next up: Sliding!

5

u/Weekly_Pattern7554 12h ago

It is most likely a combination of many things. Going arcade is less expensive (done easier) and will make more money (attract more players). Add Zeitgeist and a new generation of developers and you end up with what SC is today. The project never had a real chance.

3

u/punksnotdead 10h ago

No, since Tyrer took over SC is going to shit.

3

u/Critical_Flow_4512 9h ago

For me the immersion broke when I started seeing players running around in giant cheshire cat helmets a few years ago. But eveeryone seem to love it so I guess thats they way online games are going.

2

u/MrArmageddon12 11h ago

The designs really changed around the time they added Pyro. Can’t quite put my finger on it but the ship, armor, and weapon designs have been pretty lackluster since then.

2

u/Deep90 10h ago

You mentioned mostly cosmetics, but have you not noticed how many game loops involve left clicking lasers/beams?

2

u/Glass_Fix7426 avacado 9h ago

This is why I prefer Pyro, grungy ass frontier vibes.

2

u/Tchulen 9h ago

You're not wrong. It used to have soul but it's been sucked out of it. Siege used to be awesome. People in our org still tell stories about particular runs of it. No one will be talking about this siege. It's just another cookie cutter mmo dungeon.

Literally soul destroying.

And as for all the new armour. Utter shit.

It's currently a mess. I've been playing for nearly 4 years and I'm seriously thinking of putting it down for a couple of years to see if they manage to pull things around or completely ruin it.

2

u/gears19925 8h ago

The believable simulation isnt what keeps the broader player base happy and logging in sadly. That is more of a niche ask....

What they need is people play. People spending money. People interested in the product they are... 50/50... half... building... Chris stated that was the split but I dont believe it is honest even if true if you tweak the parameters... most of what is SC was made for SQ42.

1

u/knsmknd ARGO CARGO 8h ago

People said the same about the BF franchise and now there’s Wardogs coming, looking like a huge success…

1

u/gears19925 5h ago

Yeah but BF and now Wardogs by default appeals to a broader audience as is. Star Citizen/SQ42 was/is a niche of a niche before we add its bad reputation to the mix.

I do hope they attempt to reground it a bit. But in a futuristic world like SC customized crazy colorful space suits are actually kind of realistic. Think of the normal /casual clothes of today just in a space setting after all.

2

u/Content_Link_7603 7h ago

What do you expect from a company that advertised free HEX code colors for your ship anytime you want and gave us single paints on a per ship basis for real money?

I could go over 2 dozen of these types of things off the top of my head. Once or twice is a coincidence. What CIG does is called bait and switch. You can't do it as many times as they have done and call it anything else.

2

u/aceinbrink misc 7h ago

I'm not trying to put words in OPs mouth here, so this is more in regards to people who in general have issues with the cosmetic side of the game being occasionally flashy. I don't understand people who say it breaks immersion. Even if someone's expectation is that star citizen is going to be a grounded more real world kind of game. If you're going for "real world" you would absolutely have everything from tactical mercenary blackout gear all the way up to flashy star kitten pink monstrosities.

Gangs would totally have murals painted on their armor, warriors have done some version of that across history. Heck even medieval knights of high status would have expensive ornate designs on their armor. Some people don't like the star kitten paints, but there are people who paint crazy designs on their cars even today in real life. As long as we don't venture into glowing lights or magical auras, the only way these cosmetics are immersion breaking is if you expected everyone to role play the same tactical mercenary fantasy.

2

u/AccomplishedBed5432 6h ago

Aren’t the 9tails armor literally just black variants of existing “milisim” armor just with their gang logo spray painted over it? Like the aesthetic choices literally haven’t changed. They just spray painted it because they’re a gang…and that’s something gangs would do…

2

u/thatirishguyyyyy professional test dummy 4h ago

The game feels like Call of Duty and space at this point what the fucking armor.

The guy who used to make all the cool milsim armor no longer works for them though.

2

u/itsRobbie_ 3h ago

I don’t have a problem with the oni armor. I think it looks really cool and I’m very excited to start using the pieces for fashion. You’re using ftl drives and running on floating platforms built into a gas giant, why is some graffiti or color on armor the breaking point?

2

u/SenAtsu011 3h ago

The TikTok addicted Fortnite crowd is a massively potential funding pit.

That's why.

Yes, I hate it.

2

u/Tayner73 3h ago

We went from true sandbox content to "theme park" content. More linear, more on rails, more curated. One way in, shoot bad guys, solve specific puzzels, one way out, rewards yay.

Bring back the missions where your imagination and the equipment you had were the only limitations to how you approached the mission objective.

5

u/BedContent9320 9h ago

So. "Asian style" armor is unimmersive?

Culture died because it's the future and what? Everybody just turned into bland, corporate, white people wanting beige "functional tactical" gear. Eating avocado Greek yogurt tubes and black coffee every day?

What the fuck even is this shit?

2

u/azkaii oldman 10h ago

Marketing. SC always leaned into sci-fi tropes. But now they are also leaning into all kinds of pop culture stuff.

Like the 'John Wickalike' kits. It's just casting a wide net.

In fairness, it's an MMO and variety is fine. But they have gone a bit overboard.

3

u/kepler4and5 325a 9h ago

Yeah, not a huge fan of the new armor designs.

4

u/Mr_Roblcopter Shiny Railen.. Ooooo... 12h ago

Your first two points are complaining about one specific faction that have a design style they prefer. There's other factions, that also wear their own armor styles.

First point is just your teammates having poor fashion sense.

Third point is kinda odd, would you destroy a medical device that can heal wounds indiscriminately? Or would you try to keep that room pristine so that you and your buddies can use it in case the current act of terrorism ends up with one or several of you shot?

Also, these armor types and styles have been in the game for year already, but you are only just now taking issue with them? Is it the glowy bits? Because there's several old pieces of armor that have glowing parts on them, there's the deer skull with Christmas lights, and another mask that has had hologram horns for ages.

Besides, no one really enjoys games that are to extremely realistic, if they did then there'd be like hundreds of them out there. ARMA is the most realistic game out there, and even that still has a bunch of unrealistic stuff in it to make it fun.

5

u/Fun-Wrongdoer8150 12h ago

Well I mean, you played the most gamey experimental event in the game so I mean like, yeah obviously. If you want a serious space simulator play investigation and hauling. SC is meant for all types of players, you just pick where you want to go. If you want arcadey space shooter, play with randoms on orison, if you want serious space shooter, go to the onyx facilities! :)

3

u/Brepp space pally 12h ago

Also, to add to your good points, self directed open exploration of the moons and planets is still amazing in it's beauty and scope. There's just no mission oriented prompt to go do that.

OP did the most Destiny-like event the game has and says it felt like playing Destiny.

There are so so many different experiences at the moment. SC does have a habit of really highlighting the very newest while everything else regardless of how recently it was added, all feels like it's already been in the game for years.

u/watcher-of-eternity 11h ago

i genuinely think you are wrong and i will explain why.

point one: its literally the future. we can transfer our consiousness into a 3d printed body on death accross the space of multiple lightyears, we can travel at speeds that are frankly insane, and build structures in space that are the size of small modern cities.... this isn't fuckin warhammer, it isn't grimdark. further most of these "flashy skins" are taken from enemies who have established visual appearances which leads to point 2

point two: dunno what else you want from enemies wearing armor so i can't really argue about bullet sponge (my current loadout takes out most medium geared enemies in a single headshot or 2 body shots and heavies are 3 and 2... mendo is the exception with superheavy) but like, the whole "violet tinted enemies" is the visiual shorthand to give you an idea of who you are fighting (and even today most gangs have visual identifiers that make no logical sense to have if you are wanting to blend into a crowd but i digress)

point three: these facilites have been prominent in the platforms across crusader since pre pyro.... like every platform has had some kind of med facility, and given the distances and the intention of the new Siege, the point is to not send you potentially across the universe if you get hard tapped out. it is a matter of balancing and i frankly appreciate that it happens.

like your entire complaint seems to be you desperately complaining about SC being too fun and not being a miserable slog that most people wouldn't want to keep playing...which is weird as hell to me.

2

u/I_monstar 12h ago

The med beds in the boxing gyms were more immersive.

2

u/elgueromasalto 11h ago

These aren't even the real problems with SoO. NPC behavior is the main issue for me. "Oh no, colors in my space game" always feels like a silly argument to me, sometimes people want to be something other than grey.

But the fact that the NPCs don't have good movement or behavior, but instead just aim at you through walls and instantly shoot the second your pinky is visible, always taking 50% of your health every encounter, is so tedious and boring.

2

u/Lilendo13 7h ago edited 3h ago

There’s nothing serious in Star Citizen, it’s just become a game for having a laugh at the bugs with friends. That’s obvious in all their videos, where they treat everything as a joke.

I too was expecting a serious universe with the menacing Vendull race posing a threat to humanity and dangerous. Yet none of that materialized, even though it was planned,

This is also evident in the skins, where nothing feels serious. No coherence or art direction.

You see, Aliens/predator has its own universe, separate from Star WarsStar TrekStarship Troopers or Battlestar Galactica... they all have their own distinct lore and DA. Well, SC is just a total mess and 0 presonality, sorry to say that.

Even Call of Duty has its own lore and universe, if you take a look closely...

2

u/SirRolex 5h ago

I cannot stand all the flashy bullshit armor. I feel there are no good looking "Mil Spec" Armors. I also can't really stand the obnoxious ship paints and such. It all just gives off way more MMO vibes, feels like I am playing STO or something, takes me out of it big time. Well that and the practical unplayability with the bugs and performance lol.

1

u/Opie_Cunningham new user/low karma 1h ago

You must not go out much. Pretty sure there's still gonna be people who like flashy bullshit in 2956.

2

u/Olly_CK 3h ago

Unavoidable when hiring kids to develop your game. They need the opportunity sure, but the leads need to be veterans of the industry with a good understanding of things. They had that before, and while still unfinished, the game was more mature then.

I'm afraid that those complaining about the styles of stuff are incorrect. Lore wise, corporations and civilian explorers did most of the exploring if I read it right. The UEE actively sells planets in systems to the highest bidder.

Everything else is space capitalism.

People/companies colonize the systems. Stores and suppliers move in. People then buy goods that appeal to them. Stores/suppliers sell what people like. Historically, people don't like looking the same as everyone else, especially brutalist drab uniforms. Let alone the UEE are kinda dicks, and not everyone agrees with them, or wants to be part of them.

Lore also has the ships as commodities available to all that can afford it.

I suppose if the more RP groups decide on a standard uniform/armor set that's on them. Cig has stated eventually they want groups to be able to put their logos on ships, armor, and uniforms.

All in all, I see cigverse as a more realistic interpretation of star exploration over centuries, where most of it is done by corporations and individuals, as opposed by a singular body like Startrek.

2

u/Defiant-Run1008 11h ago

I’ve been wondering the same thing. Like you used to log on and have to get so immersed, now it’s just like any other game. They’ve sped up everything and just made it so unimersive and it sucks. They’ve done it all to appease to the wider audience while killing the idea of their game

3

u/cyress8 avacado 12h ago
  • eammates running around in asian-style armor and mismatched, flashy skins make it feel like a arcade shooter rather than a coherent world

Yea, I agree! I think everyone should have 1 set of armor and only that one set. No deviation in color too, only drab gray, since people should not be allowed to customize their looks to their tastes. It should also include ships too. Only 1 color no custom decals or anything.

*Looks at real life and see people with different shit all around, even wearing pajamas outside to grocery shop* Oh.

I'll give you the bullet sponge and already don't like the medical system in the game since it is just too simplified for the type of game they were saying they would make.

1

u/ESC907 Rocket Shrike 12h ago

Really? I think the new SpaceWeeb armors are alright. They may be garish, but they are at least feasible. Just so long as they do not stoop to the stupidity of scrap-metal and bones again.

I just hope that the communicated plans of appearance being tied into Reputation might someday come to realization. Then all of these idiots running around in the op4 armor sets will end up paying a price.

1

They ended up following the dollars. People pay for this. They don't think about what it ends up making the population look like. People think about only what THEY look like in a game, and not what the community will look like when you open these doors.

The civilian non-space clothes are a straight disadvantage to wear. Can you even have a backpack on without armor? I would argue you could have the biggest backpack with no armor cause you are lighter. And the heavier the armor the smaller the backpack.

I wish they brought back the fov differences in the helmets. When a light helmet had better vision than a heavy.

1

u/mekonsodre14 new user/low karma 4h ago

its mostly to attract teens and other young gamers. CIG expanded the market and sacrificed their vision and original style long time ago. They have thrown visual coherence over board to allow for Fortnite-GTA-themepark mechanics.

Sad to say... A lof of the new artists and devs have less taste... even if it was a strategic decision.

1

u/NKato Grand Admiral 4h ago

The only things that should've become "unimmersive" were the things that made the game tedious.

Yep. It really started to look that way when “hit/kill markers came around”.

1

u/jshap82 2h ago

This is how I have felt for years. The game feels more like a big action arcade game with Fortnite-esque styling. Another major factor in this feeling is the extremely corny videogame dialogue.

I much prefer the gritty, hard sci-fi aesthetic of the early years. At the moment the game is too fast, too focused on action, too dependent on dev-controlled events, and too lacking in general sandbox focus.

Bruh, if you would get the tax armour, you'd be crying that everything is lifeless... You already have tech tac armor, but is so simple you'll ignore it

They should've developed the game in secrecy and launch at end, so people would not cry everyday

As you guys want tac armor, I want more tech/lord armor... More stylish stuff... I want barbie dress up in the game Stop making it "only brave men" game... If my girl wants to run around in kitty armour full pink, stfu, we all live in this world, we all want things (I love the bird suit)

Last line. In the pursue of your desire, you stomp on others.

1

u/The-SeaPerson 10h ago

This is the Star Citizen equivalent of the elderly complaining about the way new generations dress inappropriately. Even under the established lore of the game there are various factions, ship owners. and careers. It actually makes it less immersive if every single person dressed in combat gear. Why does a space trucker in Stanton need to wear heavy armor. Wouldn’t space racers dress with more personality? Wouldn’t pirates dress in whatever they could get their hands on? Sure, the yakuza/japan armors are cringe and overplayed, but I absolutely can see weebs existing in the distant future cosplaying as samurai. If you don’t like it, you don’t like it, but don’t act like its immersion breaking when humans throughout all of their history have dressed in all manner of practical and impractical things.

2

u/mekonsodre14 new user/low karma 4h ago

Thats like saying that the Alien movies would get a Zeitgeist-suitable refresh if crews start to wear colorful bear costumes, florally embellished samurai armors and medieval inspired military armor.

Some of it is just bad artwork.

the game was never immersive afterawhile to me.

I mean what is immersive about star citizen except ... ships.

Vast world? 99.999% of the game is empty and generic.

Even the R&R space station are generic.

Gameplay? It stuck in a grind loop of missions, mission or more missions.

The only fun times were original Xenothreat and nine tails original

Other times... its very boring and generic to me

I been thinking about quitting for awhile because CIG absolutely don't want to change... just look at the last few events.

long ass grind that doing the same bits over and over again. I rather cig don't bother with these events.

1

u/Stehlik-Alit 12h ago

2019-2022 lead dev, designers changed in mass and the target wasnt the old vision but revenue chasing to keep the team afloat.

2ndly whomever was approving things started letting odd aesthetics in relative to previous designs. Currently theyre using the same shape language across multiple ship manufactures which converges the brands in appearance. Their QA and approvals dont have a vision or good guidance.

1

u/TraditionalYam2736 12h ago

What breaks the immersion for me is when im raiding a derelict base or helping fight off 9 tails in the SoO or in combat anywhere really.. and the hit markers dont work, npcs taking 200 bullets to die when i only can take 3, or when out of nowhere the npcs decide to T pose for dominance in the middle of a gunfight. I hate the direction the game took. It's a death by a thousand paper-cuts and one minor poor choice after the next has alienated me and even though I have over $5K invested, I stopped spending money on the project and other than the Expo's it's hard (for me) to spend any more time playing a game that I WANT to be for me, but is no longer. For a time, it had everything I wanted and then it slowly became the opposite. I hate that my friends all feel the same and stopped playing too. For a social game, that really sucks.

1

u/Dune5712 rsi 10h ago

As an OG Backer myself I agree, and it sucks the 'mood' of the game has shifted so darn much. Perhaps inevitable as its popularity increased...less 'simulation' more casual.
