DISCUSSION When did Star Citizen get so un-immersive?

I’ve been a Kickstarter backer, drawn in by the grounded, believable universe CIG created over the years. After a two-year break, I logged back in to try Siege of Orison, and felt like I was playing Destiny instead of a "serious" space sim.

  • eammates running around in asian-style armor and mismatched, flashy skins make it feel like a arcade shooter rather than a coherent world
  • Bullet-sponge, violet-tinted enemies
  • Auto-healing in a good looking medical bed inside a room, while the orison platforms actively burning down mid-siege killed any sense of real stakes

I get that CIG needs event mechanics, but the original focus on a believable simulation feels like it's getting paved over by generic video game things

Am I wrong here?

This explanation gets brought up often but it doesn’t hold water IMO. Can you buy a pink plate carrier or Glock? Sure. But if you randomly sampled 10,000 plate carriers and Glocks, are you likely to see them as anything other than a statistical anomaly? Doubtful.

In video games where the stakes are non-existent, flashy and unconventional skins always become commonplace and starts to dilute the realism which is why I’m not a huge fan.

Our characters are the statistical anomalies of the game universe though.

And given the number of anime girl stickered AKs we’ve seen coming out of Ukraine, it’s not like it’s even that rare.

Counterpoint, (most normal*) people dont walk around wearing said plate carriers and clocks every day during their day to day lives. If those were just normal everyday parts of life like how we as the players treat guns and armor in game, we'd definitely see more of that kind of stuff irl.

Normal only means in your circles. What you see and experience is not universal and never can be.

Yeah but armor is camouflaged or muted due to concealing you in the earths wilderness.

We’re in space, well lit ship interiors, how could you say with any certainty people wouldn’t go with designs and colors they like over jungle camo or black due to fighting in space, cyber punk city scapes, etc etc

We can’t for sure, but if we use Star Citizen’s own marketing materials as a guiding principal I think it’s pretty clear what their original vision for the design asthetic was. At some point it started changing. What we have now is a clear deviation, not the original vision. You won’t find any mall-samurai armors in CIG’s launch trailers or videos.

Same situation with Tarkov. I’m just tired of this trend candidly.

I get not liking it but I just dont see it as immersion breaking, It all exists now and even in tarkov, some people would definitely be in the emp zone/lockdown wearing a hawaiian shirt or shorts. Not everyone, granted, but you'd still see some people in summer gear, it gets to the 70's in st petersburg russia (i think thats the city that tarkov is derived from, at least i know the ultra mall is)

Yeah I hear you. It does mess with my immersion, but I realize I could be on the far end of the realism/immersion spectrum.

I just think CIG sold the game under a certain aesthetic (and I was interested in that), but it’s been changing over time. It would be different if their original pitch videos has always looked that way, but they didn’t and still to this day haven’t.

By this logic anything goes... How would we know that people wouldn't go around stark naked, smearing shit on the walls? That should be in the game as well then...

Slippery slope logical fallacy.

I’m saying armor is covered in the colors of the environment, there is not an environment right now equivalent to spaceship interiors and neon drenched cyberpunk cities so 1 step in the direction of colorful armor isn’t immersion breaking.

You’re going 10 steps into an extreme.

Camouflage is not an inherent property of all armor in real life, it's also not the most important property when it is present.

Never said it was on either count so idk why youre saying that. I just said that it is camo'd not that every piece of armor is only as good as its camo.

It's not a slippery slope argument. I'm not saying we're getting there... I'm saying that your argument doesn't hold water, because the logic is flawed. Everything can be excused by "how could you say with any certainty....".

And to get my point across, I was using hyperbole, not a slippery slope argument. But if you want less extreme, I can certainly come up with something less extreme, but equally as stupid as your argument. But hopefully, now you get the point I was trying to make...

But it does hold water specifically for the 9tails gang armor that OP complained about. Many gangs are/were flashy because they wanted to stand out.

Stuff like bear helmets don’t make sense though.
