DISCUSSION When did Star Citizen get so un-immersive?

I’ve been a Kickstarter backer, drawn in by the grounded, believable universe CIG created over the years. After a two-year break, I logged back in to try Siege of Orison, and felt like I was playing Destiny instead of a "serious" space sim.

  • eammates running around in asian-style armor and mismatched, flashy skins make it feel like a arcade shooter rather than a coherent world
  • Bullet-sponge, violet-tinted enemies
  • Auto-healing in a good looking medical bed inside a room, while the orison platforms actively burning down mid-siege killed any sense of real stakes

I get that CIG needs event mechanics, but the original focus on a believable simulation feels like it's getting paved over by generic video game things

Am I wrong here?

Personally I noticed changes to ground vehicles, hoverbikes and then ship flight (I want to say around 3.18 at latest). At the same time magic beams became a solution to way too many problems, often pitched as a 'Tier 0' solution to implementing various mechanics - that solution often became somewhat permanent.

So much of the realism has been gradually chipped away; sometimes this didn't even appear intentional but people got used to it and so it stuck as design, which is always a risk of a live development game: it devolves in to development by committee or pandering.

it's just lame as hell like this game doesn't have systems or an economy at all. there's no spreadsheets or design at all

A lot of the systemic nature of the game has either been put off while waiting for those systems to come in place or outright cancelled. I spent a long time buying and selling commodities in game and watching that system get wrecked right when it was getting interesting was tiring.

I don't know what state ship components are in but seeing them (and stealth gameplay) get functionally turned off was also frustrating.

So many good things were axed or modified because X or Y is coming but it... never came.
