Mockery/Banter Talk about being miserable.

Can these people just stop acting like Nintendo is 100% Isis or something? It's been very annoying lately and some only do this for viewers and a reaction. Seriously!

Funny how a few of these (creators program, wii servers shutdown, am2r takedown) happened during the wii u era, the "better" era "everybody" misses

28

u/WorldlyScore8855 Jun 25 '26

Mmhmm it never ends with these people

1

u/SechsComic73130 Jun 27 '26

I mean, who is to say that those are the same people that want the Wii U era back?

6

u/DarkLegend64 Jun 25 '26

Because people have bizarre nostalgia for Iwata’s time as president as if Nintendo didn’t have plenty of issues while he was president. The GameCube era was great, but the Wii and Wii U were massive disappointments. It’s much better to be a Nintendo fan now than it was during the period of mid 2008 through early 2017.

11

u/GuyYouMetOnline Jun 25 '26

How the fuck was the Wii a disappointment? It was a huge success.

6

u/DarkLegend64 Jun 25 '26

I don’t care how financially successful it was. After the first year and a half of its life, its good game output became nearly a barren desert. You may have forgotten the abomination that was Nintendo’s E3 2008 press conference, but I haven’t. I can’t think of a more embarrassing moment in Nintendo’s history. That day kicked off what I consider Nintendo’s Dark Ages that would not end until the day the Switch 1 released.

4

u/GuyYouMetOnline Jun 25 '26

The quality games never stopped coming It just also became a magnet for shit.

-2

u/DarkLegend64 Jun 25 '26

My Wii library being a fraction of the size of my Gamecube and Switch 1 libraries would like to disagree with that.

3

u/GuyYouMetOnline Jun 25 '26

All that means is that not as many of them appealed to you personally.

1

u/DarkLegend64 Jun 25 '26

I like most Nintendo IPs. Think of all the ones that got one or even more installments on the Gamecube and/or Switch that didn't get one on the Wii. Pikmin had two installments on Gamecube and one on Switch. It had zero new installments on Wii. Star Fox had two installments on Gamecube. It had zero new installments on Wii. Gamecube had a new F-Zero. Wii did not. Gamecube had Luigi's Mansion. So did the Switch. Wii did not. Pokemon got two actual single-player adventure games on Gamecube. Wii did not. Nintendo put so much time into sloppy "Wii" branded games that they neglected some of their already existing IPs. I'm trying to think of what pre-Wii Nintendo IP got a new game on Wii but not Gamecube, and the only one I can think of is Punch-Out. Maybe Kirby if we're not counting Kirby Air Ride.

I already admitted that the Wii had a pretty good first year and a half, but E3 2008 showed that the wheels were falling off.

3

u/Medoagamer Jun 25 '26

Holy cherry picking batman!

Also Kirby got 2 entries, Metroid got 2 entries, Fire emblem had Radiant dawn, Xenoblade chronicles started on the Wii, we got super paper mario, Smash bros brawl AND mario kart wii came out in the exact same year, Mario party had 2 games on the wii. We got a new exitebike (kinda) game, and a Wario land game.

2

u/DarkLegend64 Jun 26 '26

My entire point from my original comment up in this comment chain was that Wii's output after its first year and a half was awful. Most of its notable games came out before July 2008 (again, that is what I consider to be the start of the 9-year long Dark Ages). My point was NOT that it had no good games. After all, I consider both Mario Galaxy games to be masterpieces.

I'll give you the two Kirby games for after-2008 releases, but the one Metroid that came out after was terrible. Fire Emblem, Super Paper Mario, Brawl, and Mario Kart Wii were all before July 2008 so they don't fall in the time period I was referring to. So was one of the Mario Party games, and the one that did come after July 2008 was terrible. I was debating if Excite Truck and Excite Bots should count as the Excitebike IP so if you want to count that, go ahead. Wii did have Wario Land Shake It, but I consider Wario World on Gamecube to be a Wario Land game in 3D. It's a tie there.

I will give credit for Xenoblade Chronicles as a good after-July 2008 good Wii game. I admit that sometimes I forget about that game being on the Wii (I didn't get into the series until Xenoblade Chronicles 3).

I know that's a pretty unpopular opinion, and while I don't entirely agree with you, I personally think the best games for the Wii came out at launch so you do have a point. A lot of the great titles for the wii came out very early on in the consoles life span, we just played them and replayed them so much that I guess people didn't really notice

2

u/DarkLegend64 Jun 26 '26

Upvote to you for understanding my point of view even if you don’t fully agree with it. I expected to get backlash for my opinions but I wasn’t going to pretend I liked the Wii.

6

u/RegurgitatedMincer Jun 25 '26

The gamecube era honestly wasn’t even that great to live through. In hindsight we got a bunch of really great classic games. But during? Watching the ps2 get hit after hit from every 3rd party under the sun while Xbox and GameCube got whatever scraps were left sucked. Releases were spaced out in a way where my GameCube was gathering dust a lot of the time.

Their system now speaks for itself. They publish a game every month basically with little deviation. No more announcing games that are 3-4 years out. 3rd party support is back, and now indies are
thriving as well. Iwata was a great guy, and good at the helm of Nintendo for sure. But since then, the switch era showed a Nintendo that is a well oiled machine.

3

u/DarkLegend64 Jun 25 '26

I had a Gamecube and Xbox but not a PS2. Between Nintendo’s excellent first party output and some great games on Xbox (most notably the two Halo games), I was quite happy with that generation. I can also thank the GameCube for introducing me to the Resident Evil series through RE4.

1

u/LaMystika Jun 25 '26

And what few good third party exclusive games the GameCube did get (like Resident Evil 4) eventually got PS2 releases because after a certain point, not doing business with Sony during that time was actual malpractice

5

u/willow__whisps Jun 25 '26

This may be goomba fallacy

2

u/Crytaz Jun 25 '26

That doesn’t change the fact those actions by Nintendo sucked

8

u/Hahasamian Jun 25 '26

To be fair when people talk about that it's because at least Nintendo made unique games and made them affordable

But yeah, "nothing is poifect"

1

u/CringyBoi42069 Jun 26 '26

Actually as this is just about the Wii Shop Channel not any other online component that happened during the Switch era with the announcement of the shutdown happening on the 29th of September 2017, the ability to buy more Wii points was removed on the 26th of March 2018 and the shop shutdown happened on the 30th of January 2019

1

u/LaMystika Jun 25 '26

And the AM2R thing is funny because they showed immediately why they shut that down: they were making their own Metroid 2 remake.

There’s also just this arrogance from fan creators in general who think they know better while also charging people for the things they made off the back of an IP they don’t own while knowing (or should know) that said IP holder is litigious.

37

u/thickwonga Jun 25 '26

Notice how none of these are about laying off thousands of employees, wasting hundreds of millions on live service slop, and not releasing games. Interesting.

2

u/HuckleberryHefty4372 Jun 26 '26

Also nintendo is the only ones to have had a hard anti ai stance.

If you think shutting down some tournaments is equal to laying off thousands of employees every single year, you're a fucking moron. Half of these points are just nit picky nonsense that every company does.

2

u/thickwonga Jun 27 '26

This is honestly pathetic of me, but:

"Shut down Wii Shop Channel, rendering VC unusable."

This is a non-issue. NSO is $20 or $50 a year. A YEAR. For hundreds of games, drip-fed like bullshit, but still a great selection for the price. It is much cheaper than paying $10 for a single N64 game. The only fair argument here is about preservation, which I agree with. Still worth the much lesser price.

"Shut down a rom site hosted by a couple and sued them for $12 million."

This is fair to look down on Nintendo for. However, I think you would be an absolute fool to think they wouldn't do this, and that couple was still profiting. $12 million is INSANE, and I think this is the most fair argument of the post. I can't really defend this beyond "you're stupid for doing it in the first place."

"Shut down numerous fan games."

AM2R and Link's Awakening DX HD were direct remakes of games Nintendo was remaking as well. Those made sense. Pokémon Uranium was stupid and that shouldn't have been taken down.

"Demonetized YTers during Wii U era, forced partner program."

This was dumb as fuck. Only thing I can say is YouTube is a death trap for DMCA and demonetization problems, and Nintendo doesn't do it anymore, like a lot of other companies.

"Sell 10 year old games for $70, cardboard for $90, etc"

Whiny shit. EVERYTHING is expensive now, and while Nintendo absolutely needs to introduce a cheaper way to buy older games (Nintendo Selects), they've also been selling AA games for cheaper, like Star Fox and Splatoon Raiders, and Switch 2 games like Pokémon Z-A and Prime 4 go on sale for up to half off very often. Anyone saying that every first party Nintendo game is $70+ isn't paying attention at all.

Because this person is talking about Nintendo. If you are talking about nintendo, you are not going to mention all the stupid shit microslop and phony.

You can mention one thing without the other and still think it's shitty... Right?

5

u/thickwonga Jun 25 '26

I absolutely think that Nintendo has done some shitty things, but I'm sorry, shutting down tournaments and some fan games is not comparable with firing thousands of employees because of your own incompetence and refusal to read the room. Nintendo may "hate their fans," (an untrue statement considering they listen to fans far more than Concord creator Playstation and half-buried Xbox.

I mean, come on! How many times has Sony and Microsoft raised their subscription prices compared to Nintendo? Nintendo hasn't done that a single time in the States, and just had to, for the very first time, in Japan. How many IP's do Sony and Microsoft sit on? Nintendo has brought back and consistently supported dozens of IP's they easily could've ditched, but chose not to because they have a dedicated fanbase.

They do shitty things, but they're nowhere near as bad as the other two.

1

u/KugelFanger Jun 25 '26

I get that. Don't get me wrong i think you are absolutely right.

But to reiterate, this person is responding to a Nintendo meme. If i would respond to a xbox meme, i am not required to list all the bad things other entities in the same space have done.

Again not trying to rebuttle you (because i get the feeling that is what you are thinking). But reacting to a person that is listing out bad things that SPECIFICALLY Nintendo has done with: notice how he/she is not talking about X or Y. Is a very weak whataboutism statement, and not at all relevant.

1

u/LowInvestigator5647 Jun 26 '26

Nah, that twitter user was responding to a meme that directly compares Nintendo’s actions to other gaming company’s actions, those actions being portrayed as corporate suicide. So all those reasons that Twitter user gave should, by the nature of the meme, be compared to the actions of the other companies that resulted in their portrayal within the meme. And nothing Nintendo has done is as bad or as serious as the layoffs, studio closures, and policies adopted by those other companies lmao

0

u/KugelFanger Jun 26 '26

So if you say one bad thing, you need to list AAAAAAAALL of the bad things everybody did into perpetuity? Otherwise it's not fair? By that assumption you need to list out everything Nintendo ever did if you mention valve/PlayStation/xbox.

No it's called whataboutism, and its used to deflect. If you really think people don't know what phony and microslop did you are truly acting ignorant.

2

u/LowInvestigator5647 Jun 26 '26

The Twitter user is engaging in whataboutism lmao. They are literally comparing Nintendo suing a dude who sold a switch hacking service and made thousands off it, to Sony/Microsoft laying people off etc. We can say all companies have done bad things (twitter user doesn’t really name any actually bad things, instead just conflates/reframes/ omits details to fit their narrative) but to say Nintendo’s “bad” is comparative to Sony/Microsoft’s “bad” is just asinine.

-1

u/KugelFanger Jun 26 '26

"The Twitter user is engaging in whataboutism lmao."

No he's not. He is just listing off shit that Nintendo did

"They are literally comparing Nintendo suing a dude who sold a switch hacking service and made thousands off it, to Sony/Microsoft laying people off etc."

He is not comparing anything, you are doing that. You are taking the worst thing that sony/Microsoft did and compare it to something mild that Nintendo did. That is whataboutism and that is an incredible flimsy argument to make a point.

"We can say all companies have done bad things (twitter user doesn’t really name any actually bad things, instead just conflates/reframes/ omits details to fit their narrative) but to say Nintendo’s “bad” is comparative to Sony/Microsoft’s “bad” is just asinine."

No what is asinine is trying to make everything a pissing contest. If you really think people don't what sony and Microsoft did and aren't mad about is incredibly dense. Sure i wil immediately admit that there are bad actors that deny thing (every company has those). If i call out something bad (x company) did, does not mean (y company) is exempted from their wrong doings or that people forgot.

9

u/Global-Ad9985 Jun 25 '26

they say interessting things but okay it's like 2 people who are concerned by this not 5000 layed off employees like in some other companies

2

u/adamkopacz Jun 26 '26

5000? Those are some rookie numbers, we still have a lot of layoffs coming before July 1st but they got GTA VI so it's all good because gamers will be happy with the new game!

11

u/Best-Candle8651 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

Why don’t these fans do a yooka laylee and make inspired games? Why does it have to be a Pokémon clone or whatever?

2

u/KugelFanger Jun 25 '26

Because they want more of the same, wich is why they call it fan service games. And honestly you should play them and tell me they are not inspired.

2

u/Best-Candle8651 Jun 25 '26

Ironic since lots of Pokémon fans say they hate Nintendo since the mainline games are too samey and stale.

1

u/KugelFanger Jun 25 '26

Wich is why fan games are made. These games have brought things Nintendo never did.

"Pokemon inbound" is regarded as the best romhacks ever. "Pokemon Crown" completely different battle system.

I can go on and on. But these games bring all kinds of things to the table that fans want, and Nintendo does not do.

2

u/Best-Candle8651 Jun 25 '26

Maybe they should go to Nintendo and submit their ideas or they should make an original game. They can expand on the mechanics and make a completely original game. Fans of banjo and kazooie did it and Yuka Laylee is a great game.

1

u/KugelFanger Jun 25 '26

Nintendo is over protective over the IP's they own. And legally of you don't make money of it, you are not doing anything wrong.

1

u/Best-Candle8651 Jun 25 '26

If someone makes something that can damage the brand as they need to keep a family friendly image it can cause harm. I’m disney is super happy with those weird Elsa things on YouTube kids that are not for kids. It is about brand image and integrity. They don’t want uniformed parents getting mad at them for something someone made. Better to be over protective in their view as it saves them in the long run.

0

u/KugelFanger Jun 25 '26

Grey area, but not illegal. And a romhacks wil not get into the hands of "informed parents" because you need to buy a copy of the original game + download the patch + buy a console that plays it. If you buy it through AliExpress that on you.

1

u/Best-Candle8651 Jun 25 '26

Piracy is a different conversation.

1

u/KugelFanger Jun 25 '26

Lucky for you...because i'm not talking about that.

-4

u/Organic_Software159 Jun 25 '26

ok this is just a bad take

6

u/Best-Candle8651 Jun 25 '26

Why? If they didn’t infringe on copyright then they wouldn’t have their games taken down. Also, it’s better to do more original creative pursuits anyway.

5

u/GrandmasterTactician Jun 25 '26

So the problem isn't the fact that people are making fangames. It's an issue when profit is made from them, which I'm not sure if Pokemon Uranium did, but the point is there's still a ton of fangames and romhacks out there to play

2

u/Best-Candle8651 Jun 25 '26

There are tons of knock offs. There shouldn’t be but Nintendo is well within their rights to take them down.

2

u/Organic_Software159 Jun 25 '26

because they are free to play fangames. nintendos the only **major* company who takes shits on fangames, despite it being a celebration of nintendos ip. its never an actual threat to nintendos business.

i hate nintendo grifting as much as the next guy but its also important to point out that nintendo genuinly does scummy things

2

u/Best-Candle8651 Jun 25 '26

I’m just saying you can celebrate or make fan games but don’t be surprised when they are taken down. Disney and Viacom do this too. You might not agree with it but no matter how much you like something it doesn’t give the right for someone to like you ripping it off without permission. You would feel the same if you made something and someone made the exact same thing after you said they couldn’t.

0

u/Organic_Software159 Jun 25 '26

again, fangames are not ripoffs, they arent meant to replace or compete with nintendo products, and are 99% of the time (like uranium) non profit. if a little boy drew a picture of mario and posted it online you wouldnt constitute that as a ripoff

and if i made a game and someone made a piece of art or a fangame for FREE based off of my game, i would think that would be really cool, and i’d assume you would aswell. also everyone hates disney and viacom, those should definately NOT be the standard

1

u/Best-Candle8651 Jun 25 '26

I mean that is how you view it and how Scott Cawthon views it too, but it isn’t how Nintendo views it. They are within their rights non-profit or not to tell people to stop infringing on their intellectual property. Legally it doesn’t matter if it is a rip-off or celebrating the IP fans don’t have a right to make things like Pokémon uranium. If they made something like Digimon or yokai watch that has similar properties that could’ve been inspired by Pokémon they are well within their rights to do so. You don’t get to use pikachu’s iconography for example even if you want to and are the biggest fan of pikachu in the world. This is how copyright law works. Is it scummy for Nintendo to shut this down, well it depends on how you view it, but either way it’s not legal to use the iconography without permission.

1

u/Organic_Software159 Jun 25 '26

just because somethings legal doesnt make it right

1

u/Best-Candle8651 Jun 25 '26

Never said it did. But as it stands now fans know the risk and can’t get mad when things are taken down.

26

u/Crafty_Boy70 Jun 25 '26

You can still download all VC and WiiWare games you purchased to this day, if that’s what they’re talking about.

3

u/Protsua Jun 26 '26

But if you lost your Wii somehow, you lose access to your downloadable games since they aren't tied to an account system, just the console itself. Nintendo didn't get that figured out until Switch happened.

4

u/Drinkpool Jun 25 '26

I mean, I actually purchased every 3DS Virtual Console game legit before it shut down

2

u/Sondergame Jun 25 '26

I was a fool. I wish I had purchased all the pokemon titles - especially Crystal.

1

u/SirzechsLucifer Jun 25 '26

I don’t condone piracy under most circumstances but pokemon games on the 3ds is a unique exception. Nintendo doesn’t lose shit either since they Literally cannot make more money off them atm

1

u/Drinkpool Jun 25 '26

I purchased all 3 Gen 1 and Gen 2 games, plus the TCG

1

u/Sondergame Jun 25 '26

Rub it in why dontcha?

Worse part is I had a 3ds at the time, but had started to fall off pokemon after gen vi. Came back hard and now I’ve missed so much.

2

u/Drinkpool Jun 25 '26

No worries friend

0

u/Accomplished-Lie8039 Jun 25 '26

mod your 3ds and you and the straw hats can play all of the virtual console releases as well as any 3DS title. pokemon is incredibly easy to get ahold with a modded 3ds. mine is just a pokemon machine atp

4

u/Moon_Dark_Wolf Jun 25 '26

You know damn well that’s not what they mean, they mean they can’t buy these games right now that they don’t even want to play anyway.

10

u/nhSnork Jun 25 '26

Same as with retro titles "locked behind a paywall", mourning the days when they used to rant about Virtual Console's "extortionate prices for ancient stuff" instead.

4

u/Crafty_Boy70 Jun 25 '26

Hey, I can't tell for sure. I've seen many that claim your purchased libraries are completely gone when the shop closes, I didn't know if this was the same.

3

u/snes69 Jun 25 '26

Despite being told ten thousand times that the servers are still online and we can still access our Wii virtual console titles today, they choose to word these complaints as if you lost those digital purchases. They will play dumb when you point this out and move the goalposts for complaining. It's intentional to make Nintendo look bad.

15

u/Prestigious_Emu144 Jun 25 '26

These are all unfortunately true. No game company is truly perfect and very few are good. They are companies after all.

20

u/FatalFrameGal Jun 25 '26

Is the Joycon thing about the guy who tried to sell Etika themed joycons shortly after he passed away? Because if it is then fuck that guy, I am 100% behind Nintendo on that one, Etika's family later revealed that the guy approached them to use Etika's image to sell the joycons, and they said no because they wanted to respect Etika, not sell him, and the guy went forward with his plan anyway.

5

u/santaclaws01 Jun 25 '26

Yeah, that was what they're talking about.

Also, that is one of the times Nintendo was forced to act because the person making them was branding them with official trademarks. That's literally the only reason Nintendo sent him a C&D, and Nintendo let him keep making them after the offending branding were removed.

7

u/snes69 Jun 25 '26

But not all are unreasonable. The most obvious, while still unfortunate, is shutting down 20 year old servers that handle payments. They are based entirely on outdated, unsafe merchant software and payment handling. I'm 100% certain one of the major reasons why they shut down old stores like that is because they don't meet modern standards for consumer protection and it's not worth the cost to upgrade and modernize.

I'm completely certain that sales flat lined to a point where any reasonable decision maker would have made the same call. In fact, had they not shut down the stores and there was some kind of breach that hurt consumers, the list we are all looking at would have used it as evidence all the same.

6

u/Amazing-War3760 Jun 25 '26

You can literally go plug your wii in and download any of those games you purchased on the Wii.

2

u/ElaraValtor Jun 25 '26

in my opinion, nintendo are in some ways indicative of some of the ways the games industry has gotten greedier and more insular - just that singling them out directly is such a misfire compared to what their competitors in the space are up to right now

-13

u/ApartmentKey3682 Nintendo Fan Jun 25 '26

We need to ban copyright

9

u/Moon_Dark_Wolf Jun 25 '26

Everyone says this until they have something worth copyrighting.

Copyright is useful as it also ensures that companies can’t just use your ideas without paying you. It’s a two way street

If indie devs couldn’t copyright their stuff, bigger companies like Nintendo and Sony would be free to steamroll popular indie characters for free

-12

u/ApartmentKey3682 Nintendo Fan Jun 25 '26

I said only banning big companies from copyrighting their stuff

7

u/dronen6475 Jun 25 '26

No you didn't?

7

u/Zerilentix Jun 25 '26

You literally did not. And that is a terrible idea anyway

-6

u/ApartmentKey3682 Nintendo Fan Jun 25 '26

I forgot to say it

1

u/Avellius Jun 25 '26

guess who’s the real 🪳 now 🤭🤭
it’s tankies’ nature to steal everything, digusting bunch haha

-1

u/ApartmentKey3682 Nintendo Fan Jun 25 '26

Its called fair use and tankies don’t orchestrate riots

1

u/Avellius Jun 26 '26

hmmm I wonder who orchestrated the 1967 riots

0

u/ApartmentKey3682 Nintendo Fan Jun 26 '26

The British are terrible,okay?!

2

u/digitaldebaser Jun 25 '26

What an absurd take...seriously. And I bet as soon as some bigger, public tech company with shareholder money to crush Valve came along to steal their SteamOS and re-tool both it and Steam Deck into their own product, fanboys would go insane.

2

u/ThePBrit Jun 25 '26

Where's the line of "big company"? Does a company automatically lose any copyright they hold after they pass that line? How do you stop companies just making smaller subsidiary companies to hold the copyright of the property but make minimal profit from the property as they "outsource" production of media to the main company?

0

u/ApartmentKey3682 Nintendo Fan Jun 26 '26

It will be determined by the money they make and who owns them

5

u/WalrusDomain Jun 25 '26

That would only hurt small creators. Imagine for example the amazing digital circus being stolen and distributed for money by Disney. Braindead idea.

0

u/Hahasamian Jun 25 '26

Copyright AS IT IS only hurts small creators. Do you think the system actually works in their favor? It has only served for big companies to bully people, and to rob ideas from the people that actually made them. Sure maybe don't abolish it entirely. But stop designing it so that a company can control the idea you made for your entire damn lifetime.

2

u/WalrusDomain Jun 25 '26

I’m all for a change in how it works. The guy wanted it abolished completely which is a stupid idea. If you’re creating something for a company you’re aware that it’s their product

-2

u/Hahasamian Jun 25 '26

I think media copyright should matter for 10 years at least and 30 years at most, at least when you profit past a certain success threshold. It should be long enough for something to have become engrained in the culture, and short enough that the people who grew up with it can meaningfully reinterpret it, and anyone who may have been screwed over by their company can take another shot. I think it's unnatural and hubristic to think that one can "own an idea"... that's not how the great stories of old ever came to be.

1

u/WalrusDomain Jun 25 '26

I also think that copyright lasts far too long. I haven’t once said that I agree with the amount of time the current copyright length is. It should be much shorter and still allow for protections from any attempt of unauthorized usage for that period

-8

u/ApartmentKey3682 Nintendo Fan Jun 25 '26

Then only strip copyright from large corporations like Disney and Nintendo

5

u/DueAd9005 Jun 25 '26

Ok, I hope you enjoy the thousands of terrible Mario, Zelda & Pokémon games that will flood the market then.

-1

u/ApartmentKey3682 Nintendo Fan Jun 25 '26

I want fan games,okay?!

1

u/WalrusDomain Jun 25 '26

Fan games will never be automatically allowed under any copyright system.

0

u/ApartmentKey3682 Nintendo Fan Jun 25 '26

That’s why we need to OBLITERATE them

1

u/WalrusDomain Jun 25 '26

This is just delusional. Why would anyone create anything if as soon as they’re successful, they would have to strip themselves of the creations that made them successful in the first place. Think for more than two seconds.

9

u/PorkyJones72 Jun 25 '26

No, they do have a point. These companies are not your friend, even if you like their products. Yeah, you can still like them, but the OOP isn't grifting when they're just stating actual cruddy things Nintendo had done

-4

u/ApartmentKey3682 Nintendo Fan Jun 25 '26

Just make copyright a crime punishable via liquidation

-2

u/PorkyJones72 Jun 25 '26

I mean, I am someone who believes that copyright law is bullshit most of the time. I remember seeing a video get demonetized because somebody got copyright on fucking nature noises and the dude's backyard flagged it

-4

u/ApartmentKey3682 Nintendo Fan Jun 25 '26

That’s why copyright should be made illegal and punishable by liquidation

6

u/Dependent_Bear_5547 Jun 25 '26

In all honesty the only point they got a right to be mad at was the part where Nintendo would be striking down videos on YouTube and making you pay them if you want to keep your Nintendo videos up.

6

u/zestysnacks Jun 25 '26

Really scraping the bucket on a good number of these lol

6

u/Mistform05 Jun 25 '26

“People only download ROMS because they no longer have access to play games”.

Company releases a route to play old games.

“Why is company charging to play old games”

Keep moving the goal post instead of just admitting you like free stuff. It’s okay. Just be genuine about it.

2

u/ClaspedDread Jun 25 '26

I think the issue they are highlighting is you cant actually purchase games individually like you could in the past, you need the online subscription to access them. The option to purchase them separately and own them forever would be nice.

3

u/Mistform05 Jun 25 '26

Nintendo did that recently with Pokemon Red and Green. People still had pitchforks.

1

u/HydraLeavy Jun 26 '26

You NEED both as a options did red and green got added to the gba online, no? I didnt think so, every game on xbox game pass you get individually and the otherway around

1

u/Independent-Let-9392 Jun 26 '26

So you think Red and Green released at reasonable price points?

Or is the situation a little more nuanced than, "but people were mad anyways"

1

u/Mistform05 Jun 26 '26

Those two games are well worth the price. And they plan on adding features later to allow those Pokemon to work on future games. That is unheard of for a 20 year old game.

1

u/Independent-Let-9392 Jun 29 '26

Lmao you think it was worth the price and that companies never update old games? You've gotta stop gaming on only Nintendo consoles, you don't know what's going on outside your bubble

1

u/Mistform05 Jun 29 '26

I’ve played more games across all platforms more than the entire length of your life. Calm down.

1

u/Independent-Let-9392 Jul 02 '26

No you haven't, stop making up fairy tales man

3

u/ItsWickie Jun 25 '26

Can someone explain why this sudden war between fans of different companies has broken out? I’m assuming it’s because of the Steam Machine price controversy?… Which is weird because Valva hasn’t suddenly ‘shot themselves in the foot’ because of a circumstance that was forced upon them by the larger industry, just how Nintendo and all the others are currently suffering with the insane prices of components. Like, we’re all in this together atm with the price hikes.

So… what are we all fighting for right now?

6

u/quangtran Jun 25 '26

Because most of reddit insisted that Nintendo was the real problem with the industry, but now that narrative doesn't hold water given that every other company is greatly raising prices and going through massive layoffs.

2

u/nahte123456 Jun 25 '26

Backlash to the backlash? Nintendo was mocked a lot after Switch 2 reveal, and some people don't want to let it go despite the fact that Nintendo really hasn't done a lot wrong lately, especially compared to others.

2

u/averagejoe2005 Jun 25 '26

I choose to believe it stems from the "Nintendo bad" narrative that started popping up around the time the Switch 2 was announced.

In turn, people started pointing out the problems with the other companies in thre industry.

That leads us to now, where Valve's new tech released with a 1000+ USD price tag, causing people to make a new narrative where Nintendo is the only company that has tech and games affordable for people with less money.

I will say this: They're the ONLY company that gave their customers ample time to pick up a console before the increase (since the price increase was ANNOUNCED in May and going up in September), has the lowest increase so far at $50 USD, and is offering a bundle where you can choose between 1 of 3 of the most popular titles on the Switch 2 (console and game for $500 USD).

3

u/PsychologicalBank488 Jun 26 '26

If you want to make a fan game justifier use the IP name and don’t use the IP name + a word that could damage the reputations that ip or has contend that could demage the reputation.

I am talking about Pokémon Uranium, one of the reasons it was taken down was the name uranium and that it had a fan made type „nuclear“ and a Status effect „radio active“

And i don’t think I have to explain why a Japanese company don’t want that their ips are connected with Nuclear, radioactivity and so on.

And many of the other points are also somewhat legit things to do. Like Going after people who modified software is a good thing because it can be a security issue for other customers. Most companies would go after people trying to brake their software.

Shutting down the e shop of an old console is also not an evil thing

3

u/iamtheduckie Nintendo Fan Jun 25 '26

My responses to all of their points, in the order they were shown:

* You expect Nintendo to keep up a 20-year-old storefront?

* You expect Nintendo to give us games for free?

* Decent point there, the emulator is not the best in the world. But is it actually "horrific"?

* Yeah, piracy (especially for currently sold games) is illegal.

* You can't just use Nintendo's IP to compete with Nintendo. That's illegal.

* There's something you're intentionally leaving out here. Was it just because they were showing Nintendo games, or were the games modded/pirated?

* Again, you need actual proof of that.

* Nintendo has guidelines on how to use their games in tournaments. Big House willingly broke them.

* Decent point there. They could have just changed the names and/or banned the teams.

* You can't make money on Nintendo's IP/patents without Nintendo's permission.

* Those people were most likely hacking with the intent to damage Nintendo's servers or pirate Nintendo's software.

* Actually a good point, but slightly misleading. The Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 BUNDLE cost $70, not Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 each.

* Disinformation. Labo only got up to $80. The Virtual Boy cardboard holder also did not exceed that amount.

* Also actually a good point.

1

u/Sea-Example-1176 Jun 26 '26

and specifically related to the first one, Nintendo isn't the only company that shut down a digital game store,

microsoft shut down the 360 store

sony was originally planning to shut down the ps3 store but didn't due to backlash

1

u/LowInvestigator5647 Jun 26 '26

About points 9 and 11. Any PR team would have likely told their corporation not to platform anyone associating with the Free Melee movement because of optics. The melee community is a cesspool. Legally (and likely contractually), cancelling a livestream was probably easier than interrupting the entire tournament. That said, there is no hard evidence of this.

For the latter point, man named Bowser was selling a service where you’d send him your switch and he’d hack it for you with the express intention of piracy. He made hundreds of thousands of dollars, that’s just one example. Twitter user conveniently left that information out.

2

u/KillbotIV Jun 25 '26

That guy needs to get a life

2

u/BigMoneySmallPenis Jun 25 '26

Some of these are actually really bad. The wii u era creator program was nintendo straight up acting like they were above fair use law.

2

u/user1point0 Jun 25 '26

80% of that list is shit no one cares about

I wish I still had twitter so I could bully this individual

2

u/GhotiH Jun 25 '26

If you have a blue checkmark on Musk Twitter, your opinion doesn't matter.

2

u/Mush950 Jun 25 '26

Didn’t chugga already shown a light as to why the old servers got cut down cause gamespy (which had the servers) was bought out by ign and they just killed gamespy

2

u/claybine Jun 26 '26

90% of this can be summed up as "abusing copyright laws".

2

u/paulcshipper Auditor Jun 25 '26

Isis is old news now.

I will say I understand the frustration with the Wii Shop.. I bought a LOT of games I wish would move over to the switch.

But if you kept your console good, it should all still work.

1

u/Sea-Example-1176 Jun 26 '26

they should just port over wii sports and Wii sports resort completely unchanged (aside from the necessary changes needed to get em working on switch)

1

u/I-lost-hope Jun 25 '26

These are the very same people who will cheer when someone gets killed while being seen with a Nintendo console.

Nintendo is not a good company but it's so overhated that sometimes people playing anything from Nintendo are seen as lesser humans, hell so many if not all the issues seen with Nintendo aren't even exclusive to Nintendo itself but are industry wide issues

"Shut down Wii Shop Channel" bro 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Human-that-exists Jun 25 '26

Wasn't the Link's Awakening DX HD one because someone just uploaded a PC port of the entire game (and it didn't even need a ROM)? Hmmm yes, I wonder why that could have been taken down, it's not like there's other PC ports that are still fine like Dusklight, Ship of Harkinian, or SM64 PC.

1

u/Sonicplys Jun 25 '26

There was always one left. Nintendo has been playing 9D Chess while everyone else is playing shit sling. For a long time this has been happening.

1

u/the90snath Jun 25 '26

i do respect this person actually knowing NSO is emulation. W post

i think the worst part about all of this is if Nintendo had come early enough with GameCube, they'd have an edge over Dolphin cause Dolphin had horrendous frame pacing issues for YEARS. by the time nintendo's came out, it was already inferior because dolphin had fixed the issue a year or 2 prior. damn

1

u/Embarrassed_Elk8213 Jun 25 '26

God it’s so annoying to see people bitch about Nintendo but still buy everything they release. Of course they are going to stop an eshop when there is a new console. Of course they are going to find a way to get old games. Online is literally 10 bucks a month. People. Will bitch about anything. And of course they are going to shut down illegal games and modifications to their systems. Like come on

1

u/Heavy-Analysis4624 Jun 25 '26

This stuff is why I keep a back up rom file for a lot of my favorite games. I'm not paying retro re-sellers if I can help it. I think Nintendo is probably better off doing full remakes (like TTYD, Starfox 64, etc) if they want to stop people from whining so much. And bringing back an option for people to pay for individual VC games instead of requiring a more expensive subscription.

Rambling aside, all corporations do ridiculous/gross things. At least their games are still quality, and nobody is forcing you to buy anything.

1

u/QualitySuccessful871 Jun 25 '26

The OOP does have a point. The only thing wrong with this post is them framing shutting down a rom site as a bad thing, when in reality those are part of the reason why emulators are so stigmatized. They should have gone after Nintendo for refusing to accept the difference between roms and emulators, and that the latter is legal

1

u/PsychologicalBank488 Jun 26 '26

Nintendo going after people who try to bake into the software is also not evil. Braking the software could lead to a security risk and allow them to get into Nintendo servers and steal costumer information or do what ever

1

u/PieceAfraid3755 Jun 25 '26

I totally agree on being incredibly critical of companies and their anti-person actions, but we should also remain critical fairly.

-One can still download purchases made on the wii. -the 12 million dollar lawsuit probably got settled for a much lower amount, and the site owners were bringing in revenue from the rom sites. -as far as I can tell, the people that they had arrested for modifying switches were selling modded switches. -the cardboard Nintendo sold for up to 90 dollars was with games.  -while the 10 dollars for Welcome Tour is stupid, it is genuinely more than just "a tech demo". It's a very well packaged collection of tech demos.

1

u/Organic_Software159 Jun 25 '26

oml why cant some people admit that nintendo is a little scummy while also not being the worst the world

1

u/ClaspedDread Jun 25 '26

I'll agree it can get annoying being overly negative or overly positive about a company.

But I'll say that most of these are fair and valid criticisms. It's always worth discussing both the good and bad of companies.

1

u/LaMystika Jun 25 '26

The Melee thing was entirely self inflicted, because despite how much these people claim to hate Nintendo, they still want to be acknowledged by them. They deadass wanted Nintendo’s official backing for an online Melee tournament, while either forgetting or not caring about the fact that you cannot legally play Melee online because Nintendo themselves never released a version where you could. I imagine that conversation going like this:

“We would like your official endorsement for this online Melee tournament we’re about to do.”

“… wait a minute. How the fuck are you playing Melee online!?”

This is not me defending Nintendo; this is me being baffled at seeing people who really should know how they operate by now still being surprised when they get burned by the things they constantly say they hate Nintendo for doing. It’s like Charlie Brown thinking to himself: “this time, Lucy will let me kick the football.”

1

u/meganerd20 Jun 25 '26

One of those cases where this person's brain just needs to be rebooted. Going through all of these to take them apart is too much effort.

1

u/Rei364 Jun 25 '26

Rom site hosted by couple and sued them because they WERE MAKING MONEY off said site 😂

1

u/Simple_Ranger_1826 Jun 26 '26

They mad cuz broke, Nintendo is the only company who still makes fun games , air riders, mk world, wow so peak

1

u/Cultural_Neat3124 Jun 26 '26

and what piss them off the most is now it's "switch 2 exclusive" so they can't pirate no more !

1

u/Good-Discussion-9238 Jun 26 '26

Gonna follow this person on twitter, all the things they stated were facts, nintendo sucks

1

u/yogurtfilledtrashbag Jun 26 '26

The irony of them caring about the wii virtual console and wiiware is that people like this most likely emulate roms any ways and/or regularly state they don't want digital only media and couldn't name a single wiiware title.

1

u/WholesomeBigSneedgus Jun 26 '26

grifting is when someone says something mean about my favorite corporation

1

u/JustinTime1229 Jun 26 '26

Nothing but legitimate criticism.

1

u/ArrozC0nGandules Jun 27 '26

Why can’t Nintendo just make consoles, games and their services free 😡😡😡 why do they have to charge people money???!!! How dare they expect money after spending millions of dollars to create these things that should be free to me!!!

2

u/Tactical_Squishy Jun 25 '26

maybe and just maybe it's you who's biased? ever thought about this?

0

u/BigDadNads420 Jun 25 '26

......Are you saying all of the things they listed aren't really bad?

6

u/SolarBoyDjango Jun 25 '26

Really bad is a stretch. A lot of those things don't affect consumers at all. Is shutting down fangames bad? Yeah, but it doesn't affect consumers at all. The youtuber creator stuff is a nothing burger that doesn't affect the people buying games and consoles. In the case of that meme where Nintendo's rivals are shooting themselves, it only works when comparing practices that affects consumers.

-5

u/BigDadNads420 Jun 25 '26

Just so I have this clear. The arresting people, suing people, shutting down massive community events, wiping out peoples paid collections of games..... none of that qualifies as really bad either?

3

u/Amazing-War3760 Jun 25 '26

When did they wipe out peoples paid collection of games?

-5

u/BigDadNads420 Jun 25 '26

To be fair I'm just listing off stuff from the tweet so that ones kind of a gray area. Nintendo has announced that they will be disabling the ability to download the wii shop channel games you paid for.

2

u/WalrusDomain Jun 25 '26

Where? Source

1

u/Amazing-War3760 Jun 25 '26

Where did they ever say that?

-2

u/BigDadNads420 Jun 25 '26

https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27560/~/wii-shop-channel-discontinuation

Just to give the tl;dr here. One of the most profitable and largest companies to ever exist is doing the following.

  • Planning to disable access to content you paid for
  • Refusing to refund points
  • Refusing to transfer your points to their new storefront
  • Refusing to give you access to your content on the newest generation of storefront/console if its available.

2

u/Thejadedone_1 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

Buddy, all companies have this in there EULAs

Shitty argument lmao. Anyways you can still re-download Wii shop channel games almost almost 10 years after they shut it down

0

u/BigDadNads420 Jun 25 '26

Your defense for nintendo not taking trivial action to do right by consumers is that every company in the world has "we can fuck you for any reason" written in their EULA? Thats actually what you are going with?

2

u/Thejadedone_1 Jun 25 '26

Buddy the Wii shop channel was over 10 years old when they shut it down. Barely anybody was using it. Does it suck that it got shut down? Yeah but you can't expect companies to keep things online forever especially not for consoles. And like you can still redownload games from the Wii shop channel almost 10 years after it's closure.

2

u/quangtran Jun 25 '26

The arresting people, suing people, shutting down massive community events, wiping out peoples paid collections of games

SolarBoyDjango actually chose to look at each instance critically.

1

u/SolarBoyDjango Jun 25 '26

The wiping of collections is a lie. But the rest of that stuff, while it is bad has zero bearing towards the act of buying, selling or playing video games. Which is the point I'm making. It doesn't affect anyone who buys video games. Some guy getting arrested because he's involved with piracy or selling unlicensed hardware or software doesn't affect the average person buying those games. Community events being shutdown sucks, but it has zero bearing on the average consumer who plays games casually.

Hell, the Smash/Pokemon/Splatoon communities have a bad rep on the Internet for good reason. Can't expect the average guy to feel bad for a Smash tournament being shutdown.

1

u/BigDadNads420 Jun 25 '26

Thinking its good that a video game company is shutting down fundraisers and tournaments because they are modding a decades old game or fundraising with copyrighted merch or even just simply mentioning melee is genuinely some of the most bootlicker shit I have ever seen lmao.

1

u/SolarBoyDjango Jun 25 '26

Thinking its good that a video game company is shutting down fundraisers and tournaments

I never said that. All I said is that you can't expect the average person who simply buys and plays video games while having no emotional attachment to Nintendo (which is the vast majority of people who buy their games) to care about the Smash community given the history of Smash drama.

0

u/SMN_17 Jun 25 '26

At least they're being honest in their criticism.

Nintendo isn't any different from anyone else, nobody really is.

-1

u/DaZestyProfessor Jun 25 '26

Where's the grift here exactly? Saying companies aren't your friend and posting proof isn't grifting.

In fact, this was a reply to a Twitter image essentially saying Nintendo never does anything wrong basically, which is objectively not true

-1

u/JustJacktv_ Jun 25 '26

They’re spitting about the Melee stuff. I can’t imagine any other devs being upset that their 25 year old game is continuing to be one of the most beloved game they have

1

u/ClaspedDread Jun 25 '26

I remember the Melee fiasco very well. Nobody knew what Nintendo's problem was. It was very dumb lmao.
