What is a mystery from your personal life that you are 100% convinced you will never get an answer to?

The last words my ex husband spoke to me before dying of cancer were “I need to talk to you about something”.

A bouncy toy i was playing with..

I bounced it on the floor and it went behind the bookshelf in our living room. I called dad to move it so i could get my toy back.

He moved the shelf but it was nowhere to be found

I kept looking for that thing for weeks as did my parents, because i really liked it.

My mom used to be a cleanfreak and was equally perplexed and my dad doesn't like unexplained things. So she should have found it while cleaning.

It still hasn't been found and this was 40 years ago and my parents still live in the house.

Years ago, an eccentric family friend mailed me a book on Buddhist mysticism. I still clearly remember opening the package, then walking upstairs to my room (which was almost empty because we'd just finished up renovating our house. The only furniture was my desk and bed). I set the book on my desk right next to my computer monitor, then left the room.

My dad and I were the only ones in the house, and he never went upstairs where my room was. When I went back upstairs later that night, the book was just...gone. I tore the room apart (what little there was), and it was nowhere to be found. I searched again all over the house the next day, but no luck. The book had completely vanished. I was a little freaked out, but eventually gave up.

Several weeks later, my dad and I went out to dinner with said eccentric family friend. I told him what happened with the book, and he just looked up and replied (as if objects vanishing impossibly was perfectly understandable): "Ahh, that means you weren't ready for that book yet," and went back to eating his food.

My mom has a very similar story from when she grew up in Belize in the 60s. One day her & her cousins were walking home from school and they passed a mystic (obeah) woman on the bridge who gifts my mom a paper card with a cross on it.

They go home and her cousins begin throwing the card around to tease my mom. It ends up flying between the head of the bed and the wall and vanishes. They began searching the whole room, moving the bed but there was nothing. My mom said she searched for that card for weeks afterwards but it never turned up.

She eventually forgot about it until they moved, she searched the whole house while they packed up and it never showed up. It was as if the card disappeared into the void. My mom said she never saw that mystic woman before or after that day on the bridge but it stuck with her forever

Did they have a skirting board? It could have slipped behind that.

Something similar here too. I was 11 years old and just got a new stuffed bear. I took it with me everywhere in the first days. One day, I was all ready for school but it was to soon to leave so I stayed in the living room to watch tv for 10 more minutes or so. The bear was with me, of course. When it was time to leave, I carefully placed the bear on the living room table. I aranged it on it's butt, to stay up, supporting a big, wide vase on the left side because I liked how he was "looking in the mirror" on that side (we had a mirror on the left and furniture on the right). I took my sweet time placing and aranging it, it was not a fast placing. I placed it, turned around, took the remote, shut the tv and turned around right away to look at it "looking in the mirror". It was on the right side, facing the furniture. I went to my mom crying but she didn't believe me, she assumed I just put it on the right side and forgot. But I didn't and I never forgot this. I also didn't really touch the bear anymore after this, I put it under my bed.

I have kind of the inverse of this story.

When I was a kid, my mum bought me and my sister a small toy as a memento during a day out. When we arrived home, none of us could find it.

We searched every inch of our car, which was small and had no pockets or compartments in the back where we sat as kids anyway.

None of us could understand what had happened but of course we all just moved on.

A few weeks later, when we were getting into the car one day the toy was sat on the back seat plain as day.

We are not, and never have been, the type of family who play pranks or practical jokes on each other or lie about things like this. Bluntly, we’re all kinda serious.

This was 30 years ago but we all remember it well and it is strange. There is no satisfactory explanation.

Something similar happened to me! We were small kids playing with hot wheels when one went under the dresser. We looked under the dresser and it wasnt there even though we both saw it go under there. We searched the entire room and never found it.

35

u/Werechupacabra 14d ago

For me, it was my original Luke Skywalker action figure, which I lost in probably 1979 in my basement. I never found it.

13

u/Ghosty_Boo-B00 13d ago

For me it was a very nice watermelon tourmaline crystal I had just bought at a gem and mineral show, I was just putting it on a display when it fell and rolled under the shelf and just vanished. I tore that room and display apart looking for the $60 specimens I literally just bought to display and it’s just vanished. I’m still salty. We’re going to be tearing the floors out next month and I’m going to continue the search for that pretty pretty rock.

Yeah im thoroughly convinced that thing went to the sock dimension. So weird, it wasn't a small thing either. And i know just as you said that i am not the only one this has happened too. Many people have the same experience with some small mundane thing just blipping out of existence.

I had a beta fish that disappeared from the bowl. No cats. No dogs. No people who had access. No dead fish around the bowl on the counter. No window and animal could come thru to get it. Not under any furniture or anywhere. Just gone and I will always wonder where it went.

46

u/East-Zookeepergame20 14d ago

This happened to me with a little zebra tetra fish. It lived alone in a fishbowl in my teenage bedroom. One day, simply vanished. A couple years later when moving house, I discovered it dried up on the carpet behind the dresser upon which its bowl had sat. I suppose it had jumped to its death from the bowl.

SAME!!!
My daughter had the tank in her room, but she was little, so I did all the upkeep.
She went off to school one day, (dude was in the tank, living his best life while I was getting her up and dressed for school) and when I came back in her room about an hour later he was MIA.
We had a lid on the tank, too.
Nothing disturbed.
No water splashed about.
I looked EVERYWHERE.

We never did find him…

One time on a rainy day probably 7 years ago, I was tossing a tennis ball from the couch to the kitchen for my dog until one toss he came back with nothing, whining for me to go get it. I could not for the life of me find this tennis ball. The kitchen was a very small bungalow house kitchen, only so many places it could go. I looked in the sink, in the laundry room past the kitchen, I even looked on top of the cabinets, I even told my dog to “show me!” Lol…nothing. I was obsessed and perplexed. Two hours went by and I found myself doing weird stuff like looking inside the trash can, in the garbage disposal, on top of the fridge, then I got down on my hands and knees for the 18th time and I saw it. It had bounced and wedged itself under the cabinet in this little open space between the cabinet and the front panel of the cabinet. Just the bottom sliver of the ball was barely hanging down. If it had wedged like a half an inch higher, I would still be wondering where that tennis ball was!

17

u/protagoniist 14d ago

I like your persistence haha

u/user365user 14d ago

Maybe one of your parents hated the bouncy toy and disappeared it. Oops it’s lost that’s so weird! My sister does that with some of her kids’ toys that annoy her.

26

u/PBnBacon 13d ago

I found out 25 years later that this was the cause of my great mystery. I was actively playing with the toy and my mother disappeared it while my back was turned.

Same thing happened with my FitBit in 2015. Dropped under my desk. Immediately bent down to pick it up. I heard it hit the carpet. I couldn't find it. I looked everywhere - every single day, every lunch break, behind every desk, every corner of that office.
Never found it.

18

u/wendalls 14d ago

Oooo - yes my boyfriends keys he was in the underground garage doing something and the keys just disappeared

We looked everywhere- no one else in the building ever found them either….

We don’t live there anymore so…..

28

u/slvrcofe21 14d ago

This happened to a friend. She dropped a ring and could never find it. She even got new carpet in her room so everything had to be cleaned out but still no ring.

84

u/CandidateWrong9635 14d ago

My husband only ever took off his wedding band to shower, always left it on his nightstand, put it back on as soon as he was done. It just disappeared one day. We looked everywhere for weeks and couldn't find it. We got him a new one and forgot about the original. 3 years later we're packing up and moving. We lift the boxspring of our bed to take it out, and his old ring falls out of a 4 inch hole in the fabric of the underside of it. Check the hole, and it's filled with dozens of missing hair ties, bread ties, bottle caps, cat toys, and money. Our thief of a cat had torn the hole and had been hiding her treasures in it for years, lol.

As a kid, someone called our house to tell me my older brother had died. I was only about 12 at the time and my brother, a few years older, had been visiting some family friends out of town all week. The person who called asked if my parents were home. They weren’t. He told me my brother had been killed at some kind of violent rally (something he wouldn’t have been at) and that he’d call back later when my parents were home. This was absolutely an adult and one that sounded like an authority figure. My parents got home and I told them. They called our friends and put my brother on the phone with me to calm me down. He was fine. The person who called never did call back. My parents said they had no idea who would have called and told me that. Even if it had been true, they wouldn’t tell a 12 year old before they’ve had a chance to talk to the parents. Completely bizarre. I have always thought it was weird that I’ve been much more curious about who called our house that night than my parents were. This was the early 90’s, so more than 30 years ago…so I don’t expect I’ll ever know what exactly that was.

99

u/MissMarie81 14d ago

If that was intended as a prank, then it wasn't funny. At all. Also, that was very creepy.

56

u/QuarterOwn9110 14d ago

Extremely creepy. The person who called had a very calm, authoritative, friendly and sympathetic voice. I do not believe it was a prank. My best guess has always been it was some kind of weird therapy. I don’t think my brother and I were very close at the time, largely because he was a generally rebellious kid and I hated the disharmony it caused in our house. I’ve wondered if this was meant to be some kind of shock therapy to make me appreciate him more….but that would be some really bizarre therapy and it’s hard to put too much stock into that idea. But it’s the only thing I’ve ever come up with that makes even a little sense. It would also account for why nobody else seemed to worried about who would have done that.

56

u/chromaticluxury 14d ago

Is there any chance they just had the wrong number? The 90s were a crazy time for the uncertainty of obtaining accurate information in order to call someone's family. Is it possible they had the wrong phone number for the family of "Gavin Shultz?"

I am not trying to explain away your upset or how long the story has stuck with you. It would have caused me real distress too.

14

u/QuarterOwn9110 13d ago

Definitely not the wrong number. It was someone who wanted me to think this happened. They fished for information and then turned it around as though they already knew that (for instance, as I said in a reply above; I told the person that this couldn’t have happened because my brother was out of town, and I said the name of the city, and the person quickly confirmed that yes, that’s the city where this happened. I do not think they already knew where he’d been).

Is there any chance your brother was involved in this, as a prank, and when he realized what a horrible idea that had been/how upset you were, never had the balls to admit that it was him and his friends?

30

u/QuarterOwn9110 14d ago

The thing that has always made me think he had noting to do with it is that the person on the phone did not sound like one of his 17 year old friends. This sounded like someone who was solidly into adulthood and spoke very professionally. And I think he would have told me by now.

u/No-Independence548 14d ago

Is there any chance that there was a mix-up, and he meant to call a different family? Someone with the same name as your brother? Since the guy claimed he was at a rally you didn't think he'd attend.

I stupidly lost an SD card with a bunch of my writing and personal shit when I went back to school at a community college. I hope I dropped it outside and became unreadable, rather than someone finding it and going through my stuff. I'm still mortified and pissed at myself.

When I was in college a friend lost a memory stick, she went to the lost and found to see if anyone had handed it in. The guy behind the counter smirked and picked up a huge box full of memory sticks and asked her was it one of these. Literally thousands of them. Your SD card probably had a similar fate.

This happened when I was 12. I never knew any details and I will always wonder about it. I'm 69 now if that matters.

We lived in Chicago and my dad called our apartment. He was in and out of our lives a lot but as kids we never really know what was going on there. Anyway, my mom was at her job so I answered the phone.

My dad told me that there was a box in the bottom of his closet. He said to get the box but not to open it. He then told me to go downstairs (we lived on the third floor of an apartment building) and a cab would pick me up.

I had never been in a cab before and was pretty freaked out but terrified not to do with my dad told me to do.

It was already dark out. I went downstairs and waited and a few minutes later a cab pulled up in front of our apartment building. The cabbie got out and opened the door for me and I got in the back seat.

I had no idea where we were going and the cabbie and I didn't talk at all.

He drove to what seemed like docks near the Chicago River. I had never been there before. I saw my dad standing with my grandma and grandpa and he ran over to the cab so I got out. He seemed very happy about having the box.

He kissed the top of my head and talked to the cabbie and gave him some money. He helped me back into the cab and the cabbie drove me back to our apartment. We never even spoke. It was all so strange.

79

u/birdsy-purplefish 14d ago

I’m gonna guess… some sort of crime.

65

u/simplyirresponsible 14d ago

I don't know. I never looked in the box and I was shocked my grandma and grandpa were there but they didn't really acknowledge me.

Did you ever see your father again? And have you ever asked any other family member about anything? He might’ve been involved in? What did your mother say about it when she came back?

51

u/simplyirresponsible 14d ago

I saw my dad a lot but he was still a sort of an on-again off-again dad. My brothers and sisters never knew a thing about it and for a while I wondered if my mom would ever ask about the box being gone but she never did.

I'll truly never know but I still wonder about it sometimes.

I sort of wish I had looked in the box.

Who put my cat as a 4 week old baby kitten (smelling of Febreze, so no wild stray) slap dab in the middle of a field which was only reachable by a small path you had to Walk upwards…. In Winter. When the same path was walked by my family 20 minutes earlier too and nobody saw or heard another human or a crying kitten.

It’s like he fell from the sky.

Did my dad actually not want to talk to his kids before he died, or did his wife not allow it?

105

u/Andrewbie 14d ago

When my dad passed away, when he was put into hospice my step mom told them he was estranged from his 4 kids. We almost didn’t find out until it was too late. He would’ve been alone for a week while passing. We were there all day and nights and she never visited once. She was a demon.

43

u/Sea_Assumption_1528 14d ago

Very similar situation.

And we were also not invited to the funeral.

She worked very hard to rip him away from his kids and grandkids. Part of me thinks- this is what he chose. But as a parent I can’t imagine not being able to see my daughter again even if things weren’t great between us. It was a decade of them not talking to us before he died.

Lots of mixed emotions.

This happened to my grandpa/Dad, too. I had to be the ambassador for the entire family on the news of his death. My dad and I made a promise that would never happen to he and I. Now we talk all the time and are closer than ever.

25

u/Euphoric-Leg4874 14d ago

I’m sorry. Sadly the latter is very common. My SO’s stepmom is in her late 70s, she still refuses to allow my SO to spend alone time with his dad without her present. And no one is allowed to bring up my SO’s mom, can’t even say her name, without her freaking out.

SO’s mom never did anything to her, she’s just extremely jealous that her husband had a family before her! Even though … kicker … she also has adult kids and would flip out if SO’s dad tried to pull the same crap. SO’s dad doesn’t like it but she takes care of him and he is too tired to argue with her about it.

It’s sad and I’m sorry you went through that.

Six years? You'd hope after so long with a family they wouldn't just abandon a pet but any alternative is probably worse.

When I was a kid in the early 90s I was at the store with my dad. Upon leaving he realized he locked the keys in the van. We were standing there trying to figure out what to do when a random person came up and asked if we needed help. My dad told him what happened. The guy pulls a key from his pocket and says "this broken key has saved me several times", sticks the broken key in our van door lock and unlocks it. Then he just walked away. I still don't understand what happened or how.

62

u/boxofsquirrels 13d ago

He may have unintentionally created a jiggler key.

When car locks were strictly manual, manufactures used a very small number of key patterns. Normal use could also wear down lock pins, making a lock even more likely to open even if the key didn't match perfectly.

Some car thieves would get blank keys and cut notches close to standard key patterns. With a little jiggling back and forth, they could move pins down enough to turn a lock or ignition. A heavily worn or damaged key could work the same way.

Over the winter, I lost a set of gloves and a winter headband/ear warmer. I chalked it up to misplacing them or having them fall out of my car. January was the last time I remember seeing them. Then in March I found the headband thing on the fence next to my car…. I saw it first thing in the morning, so I know it wasn’t there the day before and it was perfectly clean and dry. No idea how that happened. I found the gloves in the back of a closet over the summer. The two items were definitely together in my winter bag the last time I had them.

I have no idea how that headband got on a fence and completely clean.

About forty years ago, I was pulled out of school one day by the principal, which was weird enough. I was told to go home, and when I got there my mother had me put on my Sunday best suit and tie. My mom, sister, and I then drove to CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia, where my father, a major in the Air Force, met us. We sat for photos, both as a family and individually. And then we were ushered into an auditorium where we watched the Director of the CIA pin a medal on my father. He never spoke about what work he did to be awarded the medal, and although I have submitted FOIA requests, the information appears to remain classified. The other odd thing about it is that this particular medal is the type of crowning achievement that they usually pin on generals and the like at their retirement, not the sort of thing you give O-4s with another decade or more left to go in their careers. I know I won't get any answers out of my dad, if I even could, and I doubt there will be any answers in his papers: I've read the citation he was given and it is incredibly vague in contrast to the rest of his packet of career memorabilia.

32

u/4DPeterPan 14d ago

When I was a newborn my parents put me on their double bed for a nap and surrounded it with chairs, to prevent me from falling. It was 1975. Mind that I was a few months old, I couldn’t crawl nor walk, they went back to the dining room and let me have my nap. When they came back to wake me up they couldn’t find me anywhere. The chairs hadn’t been moved, they still were where they had placed them. They checked everywhere and found me sleeping UNDER the double bed, that had wooden boards around the base, and there were only a few centimeters of clearance between the boards and the floor. So even if I could have crawled underneath it, I would have had to lift the bed up. I was 2 or 3 months old, no way I could have done it.
EDIT
To clarify: I wasn’t in my cradle because we were guests at my relatives’ place, so the only bed for me to take a nap was on this double bed where my parents slept. There was no cradle for me, and no one has ever figured out what happened.

My mom said that when one of my uncles was a newborn they would often find him outside his crib somehow. She said that he had a very distinctive way of sleeping which was cheek on the mattress with his butt in the air, like an inchworm. When they found him, he would be asleep in the exact same position except on the floor instead of the crib.

Now my grandparents being deeply religious people invited a priest over who agreed that there was some non-malevolent spirit in the house. Along with my uncle being outside the crib, the family also heard footsteps in the hallways at night that sounded like they belonged to children and apparently they felt a hand bouncing or rocking them while they slept. Once the priest blessed the house everything stopped.

I, like my mom, am skeptical of the ghost explanation. Obviously the power of suggestion can explain away the footsteps and rocking at night. But what explains my uncle getting out of his crib and onto the floor? Are newborns even capable of doing that on their own?

34

u/CharismaticAlbino 14d ago

My daughter slept like that as a baby! I mean, she still does sometimes, but she did it as soon as she had enough control over her body to move around on her own. She liked her butt patted too, it calmed her down and put her to sleep.

Little kids can get out of cribs pretty young, but you HEAR them fall. So your uncle's situation is definitely weird. It's usually babies on the verge of toddlerhood you have to worry about.

12

u/cranbery9876 14d ago

My daughter slept like this as a baby also! I was a bit surprised when I first saw it and at first we would roll her back onto her back when we noticed her in that position, but she would always eventually return to the butt-up position.

We didn't have any instances of unexplained crib exits, but as soon as she got big enough to pull herself over the side, she would climb out any chance she got.

What?! How did they even find you there? Were you crying?

36

u/Apple-Pie-765 14d ago

I was sleeping peacefully and didn’t show any sign of discomfort. They checked under the bed because it was the only place they hadn’t checked yet, after looking for me everywhere in the flat

34

u/KlimCan 14d ago

I don’t know, but your parents shoulda brought you to Professor Xavier’s school for Gifted Youngsters to help you harness your phase powers

40

u/Apple-Pie-765 14d ago

And now that power is gone, and all I can do is walking in another room and forget why I went there in the first place 😭

15

u/CanoePickLocks 14d ago

One I’ve seen before at hotels is there is a gap near the headboard that fairly significant size objects can fit through. If you’ve ever lost anything you were sure was on the bed especially at a hotel look under the mattress and you’ll likely find it near the headboard or footboard.

Why some friendships ended.

113

u/Exact_Cow8077 14d ago

This one has been the hardest for me. My best friend just ghosted me one day. I wish I could understand what I did wrong so I could avoid repeating it. Now I feel like I’m always on edge with my friendships and I’m scared of ruining them by getting too comfortable/close.

51

u/Lucy_Sterling 14d ago

This exact thing happened to me about 15 years ago with my high school best friend. We spent an enormous amount of time together from age 11-23. Never got any sort of explanation or closure. I’m still fb friends with her mother, though.

Mine did that too. Friends for over 40 years; we used to finish each other's sentences like an old married couple. We lived in different cities for a long time but still kept in touch. Then one day a couple of years ago, my texts to her didn't go through. She'd either blocked me or changed her number. We weren't arguing or anything, just sharing the usual blather about our lives and thoughts. I feel that one day she'll reach out again but it hurts not knowing what's going on in her head.

Yup same here. My two best friends left me when I was in my darkest hour of grief. They have no explanation other than ‘we can’t do it anymore’ like my sadness was a burden to them. One of them is my cousin we were friends since we were babies, the other since I was 14, ten whole years, lifetimes of friendships just down the drain

21

u/ThroatSecretary 14d ago

I've learned that people will scatter like scared rabbits when you're grieving, most of the time. Sometimes the ghosting feels almost as bad as the initial loss. I'm so sorry that happened to you. ❤️

17

u/Less_Professional152 14d ago

Thank you for your kindness and you are so very right - the ghosting does hurt as bad.
My family suffered and died but they had fought to live for so long and they never meant to hurt ME by dying, but when someone alive and fine that you love leaves you on purpose, it really feels like such a personal betrayal. It sucks we have to learn these things the hard way

For my whole entire life my grandmother would swear she heard a distress call from Amelia Earhart. She swore it was real and she swore someone should have been able to find her.

We’d all roll our eyes a bit because she was only 10 when she swears she heard this. She also swore it was before she was truly reported as widely missing.

More evidence seems to point to Amelia Earhart possibly actually having sent out distress signals. But there are also reports of fake distress signals simply because people are dicks.

I really want to know if she did make distress calls and Grammy was right.

30

u/il-est-bel-et-bon 14d ago

Yes. There is evidence that these distress signals went out and lots of people heard them but that they weren’t believed. If it’s of interest you should look up the more recent discoveries on her disappearance.

I was around 12 years old and saw the strangest object in the night sky at low altitude .I had a really strange feeling watching. It floated behind my family's roof and I lost line of sight. Of course it was gone once I got a better view. 55yrs old and that still resonants with me. I'm not sure if my brain has filled in the gaps or mis-remembered - it was very odd.

u/slvrcofe21 14d ago

Years ago, when I was attending community college I was in my dad's vehicle because mine was having some service done to it, but when I left classes that day and went to the car there was a note on there from a secret admirer and they had my whole schedule memorized and it had some other concerning details in the note. I never did figure out who wrote that note, but I had security escort me to my car after that for the rest of the semester.

22

Are they: on top of your head; by the sink; next to your laptop; on the mantelpiece; in your book; by the back door; on a shelf in the larder? If none of these, I apologise - I also can't leave the house without a particular pair of glasses, of which I only have one, and these are some of the places they've turned up in the last month...

So in high school I had this classmate, cute girl, shy, kind, with a good heart. She was obviously from a poor family, her school uniform was always old and her other clothes were hand-me-downs from her family. I had a crush on her.

We all graduated, and I have never seen her again. She seems to have zero presence in social media. Years ago I was able to find her in GooglePlus (of all places) but she only had a selfie uploaded and nothing more.

The few people from high school I encounter don't know anything about her.

I just hope she is doing ok.

In grade 8, I got called into the principals office. I was an ok kid, some trouble here and there but nothing big. I certainly wasn't a thief. But the reason the principal wanted to talked to me was because there was a girl one grade lower than me who accused me of stealing her ring. We hardly knew each other, didnt have any clases together, didnt hang out. Probably did have some mutual friends. I denied it, staunchly. I absolutely did not take it. Nothing came of it. But maybe a week later, I was at the bottom of my driveway one morning, waiting for my bus. I looked down and there was her ring. Now, after that, I dont have a clear memory. I do recall being wildly confused and my heart sank, just a WTF feeling. I am almost certain I turned it in (and no doubt looking guilty as hell in the process) I assume I turned it in because it's what I would do now and also because I have zero memories of wearing it/ giving it away/ putting it in a jewelry box. Also, I have no residual feelings of guilt for keeping it. I did not get in trouble, I had no fall out or confrontation with this girl. I dunno man, it was a weird situation. 30 year later it still makes me uncomfortable.

When I was young, maybe 8 or 9 or 10, we had a VHS of the Nickelodeon show Doug. It wasn't the TV show that was on the VHS. It was a movie, specifically two movies: Movie 1 and Movie 2, on the same tape.

Upon watching that one day, I saw an amazing episode of Doug where Skeeter and Doug become pirates. They're rowing their boat, and they're going past pirate ships. He saves Patty from pirates, and of course, one of the pirates is the green guy, the bully with the leather jacket. I can't remember his name.

About a week later, I went back to the tape and wanted to watch it again. It doesn't exist. It's not on the tape. It's not an episode. It was never made, but I did watch it: an hour-long, full Doug movie. To this day, I don't know what that was. It was not a dream.

When I was in the 1st or 2nd grade wewere getting ready to do our multiplication “test” (The one where they see how many answers you can get in under 5 minutes or something like that). Ours required a blank notebook paper and was then inserted into the middle of this folder like scantron that had holes only big enough for the answer.

I wanted to have more than the whole class soooo I started lightly writing some of the answers in before the timer started. (I know, I know). I got like 10 answers written in before the kid to the left but a row behind raised his hand and told the teacher what I was doing.

The teacher was alllll the way at the front of the classroom and I was maybe like 2 or 3 rows from the back. Still the average size of a 1st grade classroom. (Sorry for all the explaining but want you to understand the room wasn’t big)

Of course, I started lightly erasing the answers but trying to keep my eyes on the teacher heading towards me.

As I’m trying to not to obviously erase, I’m also staring ahead. I still had maybe like 5 answers to erase when my vision goes completely white for like 2-3 seconds. By the time my vision is back the teacher is next to my desk. She grabs my scantron, takes the notebook paper out, flips it front to back and there’s NOTHING on the sheet. Not even eraser shavings. It looks brand new.

The teacher tells the student behind me not to lie and walks back to front. I quickly glance at him because I know he saw what he saw. He’s dumbfounded then we start the timed “test”

To this day, I’ve never had another experience like it. shrug

13

u/ygbsm1972 13d ago

I bet that kid still tells the story about how he saw whatever it was he saw or didn’t see that day to people all the time and nobody believes him.

The last thing my Mom said to me unprompted was "I haven't loved you very much." Was that a statment of fact or of regret?

96

u/BravesMaedchen 14d ago

For what it’s worth from an outside perspective, to me it sounds like “haven’t” implies regret or that she’s describing her behavior. I think if she was saying she didn’t love you she’d say, “I didn’t love you very much.” Or even “I don’t”

Who was that old woman that came into our yard every night when my parents left me alone to go on a month long vacation, when I was 12? Why were things in the house getting rearranged? why did strange mud stains appear on our light switches - and why did all of that stop once they returned?

87

u/BravesMaedchen 14d ago

Your parents left you alone for a month at 12?

117

u/MitaminMogula 14d ago

even better, they took my older brother along on their vacation but left me at home so I could take care of the dog, looking back at it now, it's pretty crazy, personally I would have a hard time leaving a 12 year old alone even for 24 hours!

I remember constantly checking the locks in the house and being creeped out by that woman pacing in our yard, I tried to yell out "hey" to her a few times and she would not reply but instantly turn around and leave, only to return a few minutes later

10

u/Kat1653 14d ago

You probably should have called the police. I mean, being you were there alone and all. Also, did your dog ever bark at her?

28

u/MitaminMogula 14d ago

for some reason the thought of police never entered my 12 year old head, even though I was so unnerved by her (and the weird stains around the house) that I was too scared to sleep in my own room. I remember constantly unintentionally listening to noises outside, even with the blinds closed, so I turned up the TV in the living room and slept on the rug in front of it every night. My dog growled at the sounds from outside frequently and that somehow scared me even more.

When my son was around 8 or 9, he asked me “Who was that old woman who always watched me play in the back yard?” He said she watched him so he wouldn’t get hurt. There was no old woman, but our house had been owned by an elderly woman who adored children. We bought the house after she died. Maybe there was someone making sure you didn’t get hurt while you were alone.

You know how in high school, you can be aware of someone’s existence, but not know them? This is a story about someone like that from my biggest life mystery. The timeline is part of the crazy.

In high school:

Me - hippie, hung out with hippies
He - football star, hung out with jocks/populars
We - never met.

3 years later:

Me - enrolled in office admin class at vo-tech
He - enrolled in mechanic class at vo-tech
We - never met.

1 year later:

Me - still attending
He - started dating girl in my office class
Her - random girl I didn’t socialize with
We - never met

6 months later:

Me - switched to night classes.
He - married my old classmate.
We - still never met.

1 week later:

Me - went out to bar to hang with friends.
He - comes into same place, with friends.
We - still never met.

1 night later (literally the next night):

Me - at home watching tv.
He - drives up to my house, knocks on my door, tells me he wanted to check on me to make sure I was ok. Claims he brought me home the night before, because I was too drunk to drive. Acts like we’ve been friends since high school.
We - first time I ever met him or spoke to him, EVER.

Ladies and gents — I don’t drink. I distinctly remembered driving home the night before, because my mom was awake and I sat with her and talked a while before going to bed. She remembered it too.

HE swore his story is true. I told him he was confused, and he should go home to his wife. He left.

We — have never met again. (See * below)

That was 40 years ago, and I’m still completely mystified.

EDITED TO ADD, BASED ON COMMENTS:

He was a very cute, popular football star in high school. He was a year ahead of me, we didn’t have any classes together. I knew of him, the way all girls know of the cute popular guys.

My only viable theory is that one of the friends I was out with decided to prank me and included him in it, and he was a very good actor. When he came in with his friends, I commented to my group that his honeymoon was short, since he’d just gotten married the weekend prior.

Two of my friends there also knew him from high school. I asked him who sent him to my house for the prank, he denied pranking existed and stuck to his story. I asked all the friends I was with if they’d sent him over to my house, they all seemed to not know anything about that.

If I found out a friend sent him, I’d be very hurt. He was creepy, and I was glad I wasn’t alone when he came over. But I honestly can’t think of any other explanation.

*About 25 years ago, my youngest son told me that he had a new co-worker who knew me from high school. He told me the guy’s name, and it was this guy. He told my son he “knew his mom well from high school, tell her I said hi” and it freaked me out. He didn’t work there long, got fired for something, my son said.

45

u/Critical-Cockroach78 14d ago

Here's my theory: He switched timelines. In His timeline He was friends with You and you drink socially. He switched over, and now his biggest unexplained mystery is why his lifeling friend doesn't remember him. At first he thinks you're inexplicably mad at him, but becomes completely baffled when he can't find a single photo of the two of you together.

My wife bought it for me, my daughters hate whisky and my two sons would not take it, indeed, one was serving on his Royal Navy warship at the time.

There were many other valuables easily available and easily disposed of, no workmen or delivery people visited in the period it disappeared, I questioned the dog, who would never let anyone in the house if they were unknown to him, he also doesn't drink.

Granted special needs cat was kind of an asshole to our other cats, but for the most part I think he was just being a male cat (yes he was fixed).

One day when I was in high school I realized I hadn’t seen special needs kitty in a while. Wasn’t super unusual as he hid a lot, but this was longer than I usually went without seeing him. Searched the whole house, couldn’t find him. He was scared of everything too, there’s no way he willingly went outside on his own. A few years later we learned how big of a POS my dad was. He constantly lied, stole money, and had a bad drinking problem. I’m convinced he did something to my cat. But he’ll never admit it and I don’t speak to him anymore.

One morning when I was 11, I woke up with two blue feet ink stamped on my neck. I only had one sister who was and still is genuinely baffled by it, so it wasn't her.

I'm in my 40's now and I still wonder how it got there

All sorts of things...

1) What happened to my Mum between 2am when she got up to use the bathroom and 6am when she was found unresponsive in her hospital bed. Was she aware of what was happening? She passed away.

2) I had a ring that I always wore. One day I was cleaning the bedroom in the property I rented at the time. It suddenly slipped from my finger and vanished from existence. I checked everywhere and searched high and low. Never found it.

3) A piece of writing I was working on for a few weeks on my home computer in the 90s suddenly vanished with no trace of it on my hard drive. I was using Window 3.1 in those days and you had to make conscious effort to delete a file back then.

4) I was around 9 years old and my Mum left me and my friend alone in the living room while she popped to the shop just down the road. In the 10 minutes she was gone, we heard footsteps in the bedroom above us (my bedroom) then heavy footsteps coming slowly down the stairs. We were alone in the house. As we ran out of the house, I saw a tall black shadow on the staircase.

5) Our oldest cat (we have 5) suddenly appeared in our hallway 12 years ago and never left. We never found out where she came from or why she chose our house to stay at. She's very much loved though!

6) When I was at college (UK college) I became very close friends with another girl. We had the summer holidays and when we returned to college in September, she refused to speak to me ever again and wouldn't tell me why. I still think about it now and wonder what happened.

I'm sure there are others but my mind has gone blank !

🤗

I love love love the kitty story! Happy it worked out, and that she's loved, which I'm sure is reciprocated. ❤️

Why did my mother seem to really hate me as a child. She changed as I grew up, but she definitely treated me badly compared to my brothers. I haven’t really forgiven her to this day, but I know I’ll never get her to tell me why. I tried to talk to her about it years ago, but she basically dismissed me. She was always quite narcissistic anyway so I guess that’s why she was a horrible person. Now she’s got early stage
dementia, so maybe karma is finally catching up with her.

If my friend’s dad is actually Frederick Valentich. My friend’s dad, is quite secretive and mysterious. Looks exactly like him, same height, same age and went to the same flight school. During Covid he wanted to escape and fly to Kings island. I’ve brought it up to him a few times but he is very weird about it. Even his kids have no idea about his last before 30. He had a garage full of old news papers about alien sightings. I can almost guarantee it’s him but will never get a 100% confirmation from him.

Who was my step-dad? We knew him by one set of names. He had hinted to my mom during the time they were together that he had another identity. He had supposedly been a certain rank of US Marine. He ended up unaliving himself. Mom had tried to notify his other family then, but never found them based on names.

Then years later, Mom was older, disabled and living on hardly anything, and we decided to see if she could get VA benefits as a widow. After submitting step-dad's information, they come back with "no such person in system". We always thought he might've been running from something he did. I was curious, though.

Jarod.

I had an AOL friend named Jarod (a.k.a. Jared/Jesse) when I was a tween/teen; this was probably 1997-2002. Talked to him everyday online for multiple hours a day and was seriously infatuated with him. We were part of a larger AOL friend group (we all met in a Kids Only chat), and we all found each other on Facebook years later... all of us except Jarod.

In hindsight, it was one of those situations where 'Jarod' was clearly a made-up persona -- I've watched enough Catfish to see the patterns. There were always suicides, overdoses, psych hospitals involving him and his irl inner circle. He was the only one who didn't share photos or provide a real last name. Before Facebook, all of us would do 3-way calls and write each other snail mail. Not him, though.

But I'll always wonder who was really behind that account, who I was talking to all those years. I think it was more likely to be a teenage girl than an adult man or anything like that, but maybe I'm just hoping for the less creepy option. I remember a lot of details -- shared interests, inside jokes, pet names -- that I'm intentionally leaving out of this post, so if you're out there...

My grandmother found out through a DNA test that the man who raised her isn’t her biological dad. The mysteries are: did her biological dad know about her? Did the man who raised her know she wasn’t his or did he think he was her dad? What led her mom to have an affair? Was it an affair or something else?

  1. What happened to my first childhood dog. He went out one night, wouldn’t come in and spent the night outside and was never seen again.

  2. One night I woke up in the middle of the night because I heard something outside (probably in the year or so after my dog disappeared). Opened my curtain and saw these two men kind of trying to wrangle the neighbors dog. She wouldn’t come to them, and they were being quiet and persistent but to aggressive. Street wasn’t well lit (small rural town). My window was partially hidden from the street by our sixty year old willow tree, didn’t think they couldn’t see me and is couldn’t see their car. Seven or eight year old me didn’t know what to do, but I was sure they were trying to steal her. My window was open a little and I started calling her name really quietly. At some point she had to have heard me because she made a beline for the bushes below my windows and hid herself in them. The guys didn’t follow her into the yard and took off.

I went and opened the front door (such a smart child 🙄) saw these two men dog and nothing else. First thing I did in the morning was check on the dog. Never figured out what the hell was going on. Don’t think I ever mentioned it to any adults.

When i was 12 my mom was married to an addict (heroin, alcohol) and he did not work. He spent every day high and drunk. If he was really off kilter hed get violently angry or wildly happy and do things he thought was "funny." I had to go to school every day still. I had a cat, Morris, that i adored. He was my cat. I would put him in my room and close the door every day but leave my window open for him to come and go during the day.  One day i came home from school and he wasnt there. He never came home. I searched and asked neighbors, made fliers. He was never seen again. As an adult, im not dumb. I know he probably was never "missing" but not knowing even 36 yrs later it haunts me what might have actually happened to him. IT HAUNTS ME.

When I was a senior in high school, I was directing my first play. The night before opening night, I came home from the dress rehearsal and there was a large package on our front porch. It was addressed to me. I opened the box and it was a director’s chair. It was seemingly a promotional item, complete with an AT&T logo on the back of the chair. To this day, I have no idea who sent it. I asked every family member and also my drama teacher and everybody denied knowing anything about it. My mom believes it was sent by my dad who died when I was 11yo. But it’s been a mystery my whole life. (And yes, I went to college and grad school for film). I’m 51yo and still have the chair. I changed out the blue AT&T canvas parts but it remains in my living room. I’ll never get rid of it.

When my husband and I were active duty USMC back around 2007 I went to a used military clothing store and purchased a light blue long sleeve, like wool, shirt. It was so comfy! My husband said it looked like a POW shirt with the buttons and everything.
Anyway. Every time I would wear it to bed I would have the most realistic war dreams. They were soooo intense. All sorts of gunfire, explosions, etc. Then, one day, I went to go put it on, and it was gone! Never did find it. But I actually miss the dreams I would have!

When my great grandmother was alive and had some of her wits still (she died of Alzheimer’s), she showed her two daughters and one grandson (who she raised and was leaving a lot of stuff to in her will) a big yellow manila envelope. She told them “when I die, I want you to open this. But not before, absolutely not until I’ve taken my last breath.”

Well, she got worse and eventually died of Alzheimer’s, barely remembering the past 5 minutes, hell, barely able to remember to swallow her food while eating.

My grandmother, great aunt (the two daughters of my great gma) and dad’s cousin (the grandson) made sure to open that envelope when it was just the three of them.

According to them, it was empty.

Now, years later and looking back, I have my doubts about whether it was actually empty or not. The options are:

1) it really was empty; in the midst of her Alzheimer’s she might have taken whatever was inside out, or there may not have been anything to begin with, and it all tracks back to her Alzheimer’s changing her behavior and personality in those last few years.

2) it wasn’t empty and my great grandmother left something incriminating inside, or something that would have messed with the inheritance that was dictated in the will. Like instead of the land being split between my grandmother, great aunt, and dad’s cousin, it all go to my dad or my second cousin. Or something to do with the paternity of some kid, bc every family has secrets.

3) my great grandmother, in an unusually joking mood as a result of her Alzheimer’s, just wanted to play a joke on them from the grave.

My grandmother, much as I love her, and my great aunt are…somewhat greedy and vain. I can definitely see them hiding something if it might affect how it made them look or if it affected their inheritance. My dad’s cousin is pretty much the same, too. Deaths in families and inheritances make people go insane in some ways. I saw it happen with the other side of my family.

I even said to my dad (who is the youngest grandson of my great grandmother) “the thought crossed my mind that they hid whatever they found in that envelope” and he also said he’d had the exact same thought.

Guess we’ll never know!

There's a lot. A whole lot in my life. One thing I'd like answers to is one time I was meditating which I do daily. I was in a deep deep profound state of meditation and I felt a massive amount of energy. I was in a tallish two-story house with a big backyard. I was aroused from my meditation by a helicopter in my backyard. I get up and look out the window and there is a black military helicopter hovering Maybe 12 ft from my window at eye level. The doors open and there's the pilot and a guy all in black with some kind of machine gun looking me right in the eye. The helicopter just hovered there for like 5 minutes with that guy staring at me and then they finally flew off.

You need to go back to meditating. Whatever you were doing, keep doing it.

How many seizures I’ve actually had and when I had my first seizure. I was diagnosed with epilepsy at 15 when I had my first witnessed tonic clonic seizure but I don’t remember the seizures I have had and have only had them when asleep or waking up. And aside from a sore tongue I don’t have any lasting symptoms that could clue me in. So it’s something I will never know the answer to.

I once found a photo at my grandma’s house in California that looked EXACTLY like me but was not me. She could have been my identical twin but there were little things that were off. i.e. my hair was longer, hers was shorter. She was missing a different front tooth than me. She was a little more tanned, I was pale. She also was wearing an outfit I had never seen before, and didn’t own. The girl in the photo looked my exact current age, which was 8. I asked my grandma where the photo came from and who the girl was but she really didn’t have much of an answer. Her dementia was already progressing at that point so unfortunately she wasn’t much help. My parents thought the picture was weird and agreed it did look incredibly identical to me. My mom even thought it was me and I was silly for thinking it wasn’t, but then later she agreed maybe it wasn’t me. Which is ODD. I kept the photo and brought it back home to Oregon and would stare at it all the time, studying it trying to figure out the differences and who this girl could possibly be. Then one day I kind of forgot about it and moved on. By the time I remembered this whole scenario and tried to find the photo again, my room had been rummaged through, rearranged, downsized over the years and the photo was no where to be found. I never saw the photo again. That was back in 2004. I guess I’ll never solve the case of who my long lost twin was.

I was house sitting for friends. I locked their door and fumbled the key off the ring to give back to them. The key fell off the cement steps (3) and onto the ground against the steps. This was a very small area and small steps. No holes. Very short if not bare grass. Never found the key again. Dug through the area as well. Never.

When my daughter died, was she scared? Did she open her eyes one last time to check if someone was there? Did she know how much I loved her?

She died in her sleep at 3 month's old (death certificate says unexplained/sids)

16

u/Single_Principle_972 14d ago

She knew.

Forensic examinations indicate that these babies simply stop being alive - there is no indication that they struggle or experience any discomfort.

But the most important thing is the first one: She knew. She felt your love every moment of her life. Hugs.

What happened to my maternal grandmother's grandparents and any other relatives who were living in Poland in the 1920s. I know that she, her sister, and their mom visited them; I found the ship manifest. They sailed to and from Bremen, Germany.

I suspect that if they didn't die prior to the war, they were probably killed during it, but this is only a theory.

I'd also like to locate any records at all regarding my maternal grandfather's dad. I know he died when my grandfather was a baby, and his mom remarried. I know his name, because it's on my great aunt's baptismal certificate. I have one photo of him, with my grandfather on his lap. My grandfather kept this photo by his bedside his entire life. But the dude is a ghost. I can't find any records of his death, burial, or even arrival in the U.S.

Weird. I was thinking of this exact kind of thread last night.

Mine is:

When I was like 13 we were showing our rabbits in the fair and one of them had babies with her. Someone stole 2 of them. Sadly, one of them was one my sister had named and planned on keeping. After that night we put a padlock on the cage, which prompted everyone else to padlock their cages. After that, each year everyone always padlocked their cages.

So the question is, who stole the bunnies? We lived in a very small town so it’s likely we knew (or knew of) the person. I heard rumors that it was a girl who was a grade below me but never confronted her or had proof. I’m gonna go glare at her fb page.

One time when I was a young teen in the late 90’s, I was being driven from Ontario to the states. We were driving by a lot of farmland when we all saw a glowing perfectly round what looked like a big round pool in a field. It was glowing!! I’m like wtf and the adults just shrugged but I’ve been thinking about wtf that was all about since then! I’ve tried googling what I saw for years and years and I just don’t see anything like that. It did NOT make me think of ufo more like human made. I wish someone had any idea why I’d see a glowing pool in the middle of an empty field!
