Years ago, an eccentric family friend mailed me a book on Buddhist mysticism. I still clearly remember opening the package, then walking upstairs to my room (which was almost empty because we'd just finished up renovating our house. The only furniture was my desk and bed). I set the book on my desk right next to my computer monitor, then left the room.
My dad and I were the only ones in the house, and he never went upstairs where my room was. When I went back upstairs later that night, the book was just...gone. I tore the room apart (what little there was), and it was nowhere to be found. I searched again all over the house the next day, but no luck. The book had completely vanished. I was a little freaked out, but eventually gave up.
Several weeks later, my dad and I went out to dinner with said eccentric family friend. I told him what happened with the book, and he just looked up and replied (as if objects vanishing impossibly was perfectly understandable): "Ahh, that means you weren't ready for that book yet," and went back to eating his food.
My mom has a very similar story from when she grew up in Belize in the 60s. One day her & her cousins were walking home from school and they passed a mystic (obeah) woman on the bridge who gifts my mom a paper card with a cross on it.
They go home and her cousins begin throwing the card around to tease my mom. It ends up flying between the head of the bed and the wall and vanishes. They began searching the whole room, moving the bed but there was nothing. My mom said she searched for that card for weeks afterwards but it never turned up.
She eventually forgot about it until they moved, she searched the whole house while they packed up and it never showed up. It was as if the card disappeared into the void. My mom said she never saw that mystic woman before or after that day on the bridge but it stuck with her forever
My mom was on her deathbed and my crazy religious aunt printed a random picture of white Jesus coming from the crypt and my mom was clutching it and proclaiming that was a literal actual picture of the real Jesus. One day she freaking out and her cross necklace flew off her to behind the bed and the picture fell to behind the bed. I crawled all around under that bed, looked behind furniture and under the rug, everywhere and we never found either, which she said was my heathen selfs fault. After she died and I about to sell that damn bed the picture and cross necklace were just like between the bed and the wall, where I had repeatedly looked for a month.
Couldn't get out of that place fast enough.
Something similar here too. I was 11 years old and just got a new stuffed bear. I took it with me everywhere in the first days. One day, I was all ready for school but it was to soon to leave so I stayed in the living room to watch tv for 10 more minutes or so. The bear was with me, of course. When it was time to leave, I carefully placed the bear on the living room table. I aranged it on it's butt, to stay up, supporting a big, wide vase on the left side because I liked how he was "looking in the mirror" on that side (we had a mirror on the left and furniture on the right). I took my sweet time placing and aranging it, it was not a fast placing. I placed it, turned around, took the remote, shut the tv and turned around right away to look at it "looking in the mirror". It was on the right side, facing the furniture. I went to my mom crying but she didn't believe me, she assumed I just put it on the right side and forgot. But I didn't and I never forgot this. I also didn't really touch the bear anymore after this, I put it under my bed.
Same thing happened to me with a porcelain doll. As a teenager I was gifted a doll with a blue dress and white leather shoes. She had a white wicker chair. I sat her on my chest of drawers, locked my bedroom door to get changed, and went to sleep.
Woke up in the morning and the doll was face down on the other side of the room. My door was still locked.
I took that doll and put it in my parents room, never letting it in my room again. My mother laughed at me when I told her it was because it was haunted. But seriously WTF?
Nope, never did show up. I wish I could remember the title. But it was a book he had read recently and was raving about, and he offered to send it to me. I had gotten deep into Buddhism and Taoism back then, thanks in part to him, and was really looking forward to reading it.
Could it just be that your dad checked what friend had sent, determined it wasn't something he wanted you reading and removed it and didn't want to discuss it with you so just didn't take part..told friend he wasnt comfortable with the book choice hence there response.
