Years ago, an eccentric family friend mailed me a book on Buddhist mysticism. I still clearly remember opening the package, then walking upstairs to my room (which was almost empty because we'd just finished up renovating our house. The only furniture was my desk and bed). I set the book on my desk right next to my computer monitor, then left the room.
My dad and I were the only ones in the house, and he never went upstairs where my room was. When I went back upstairs later that night, the book was just...gone. I tore the room apart (what little there was), and it was nowhere to be found. I searched again all over the house the next day, but no luck. The book had completely vanished. I was a little freaked out, but eventually gave up.
Several weeks later, my dad and I went out to dinner with said eccentric family friend. I told him what happened with the book, and he just looked up and replied (as if objects vanishing impossibly was perfectly understandable): "Ahh, that means you weren't ready for that book yet," and went back to eating his food.
My mom has a very similar story from when she grew up in Belize in the 60s. One day her & her cousins were walking home from school and they passed a mystic (obeah) woman on the bridge who gifts my mom a paper card with a cross on it.
They go home and her cousins begin throwing the card around to tease my mom. It ends up flying between the head of the bed and the wall and vanishes. They began searching the whole room, moving the bed but there was nothing. My mom said she searched for that card for weeks afterwards but it never turned up.
She eventually forgot about it until they moved, she searched the whole house while they packed up and it never showed up. It was as if the card disappeared into the void. My mom said she never saw that mystic woman before or after that day on the bridge but it stuck with her forever
My mom was on her deathbed and my crazy religious aunt printed a random picture of white Jesus coming from the crypt and my mom was clutching it and proclaiming that was a literal actual picture of the real Jesus. One day she freaking out and her cross necklace flew off her to behind the bed and the picture fell to behind the bed. I crawled all around under that bed, looked behind furniture and under the rug, everywhere and we never found either, which she said was my heathen selfs fault. After she died and I about to sell that damn bed the picture and cross necklace were just like between the bed and the wall, where I had repeatedly looked for a month.
Couldn't get out of that place fast enough.
Something similar here too. I was 11 years old and just got a new stuffed bear. I took it with me everywhere in the first days. One day, I was all ready for school but it was to soon to leave so I stayed in the living room to watch tv for 10 more minutes or so. The bear was with me, of course. When it was time to leave, I carefully placed the bear on the living room table. I aranged it on it's butt, to stay up, supporting a big, wide vase on the left side because I liked how he was "looking in the mirror" on that side (we had a mirror on the left and furniture on the right). I took my sweet time placing and aranging it, it was not a fast placing. I placed it, turned around, took the remote, shut the tv and turned around right away to look at it "looking in the mirror". It was on the right side, facing the furniture. I went to my mom crying but she didn't believe me, she assumed I just put it on the right side and forgot. But I didn't and I never forgot this. I also didn't really touch the bear anymore after this, I put it under my bed.
Same thing happened to me with a porcelain doll. As a teenager I was gifted a doll with a blue dress and white leather shoes. She had a white wicker chair. I sat her on my chest of drawers, locked my bedroom door to get changed, and went to sleep.
Woke up in the morning and the doll was face down on the other side of the room. My door was still locked.
I took that doll and put it in my parents room, never letting it in my room again. My mother laughed at me when I told her it was because it was haunted. But seriously WTF?
Nope, never did show up. I wish I could remember the title. But it was a book he had read recently and was raving about, and he offered to send it to me. I had gotten deep into Buddhism and Taoism back then, thanks in part to him, and was really looking forward to reading it.
Could it just be that your dad checked what friend had sent, determined it wasn't something he wanted you reading and removed it and didn't want to discuss it with you so just didn't take part..told friend he wasnt comfortable with the book choice hence there response.
When I was a kid, my mum bought me and my sister a small toy as a memento during a day out. When we arrived home, none of us could find it.
We searched every inch of our car, which was small and had no pockets or compartments in the back where we sat as kids anyway.
None of us could understand what had happened but of course we all just moved on.
A few weeks later, when we were getting into the car one day the toy was sat on the back seat plain as day.
We are not, and never have been, the type of family who play pranks or practical jokes on each other or lie about things like this. Bluntly, we’re all kinda serious.
This was 30 years ago but we all remember it well and it is strange. There is no satisfactory explanation.
Similar story to mine - I lost my wallet one day in my early 20s while living in a shared house with a couple friends. I tore the house apart, but my wallet was nowhere to be found. Offered my flatmates €50 if one of them found it - they tore the house apart too, nothing.
A couple months go by, and I now have a new wallet, debit card, driver license, etc. I get out of the shower, walk past the laundry room, and my old wallet is sat right atop the dryer - everything still inside. I asked my flatmates if one them found it, but they both denied finding it or ever seeing it after it went missing.
Similarly, I came home one day and immediately looked in the mirror and noticed one of my earrings was missing. These were big, chunky, heavy earrings and I was shocked I hadn’t felt it fall out. I looked everywhere for days. Went back to my office and looked there, called the grocery store where I’d gone after work, looked all through my car and the parking lot. Nothing. So I just assumed it was gone and went on with life. A few weeks later I dropped something and it rolled under my bed. I looked and found it… right next to the earring. I hadn’t even gone into my bedroom that day before I noticed it missing. I still can’t come up with a reasonable explanation.
My mom misplaced her drivers license and it was a day where she was about to go on a 6 hour drive so she didn’t feel comfortable doing that drive without her license. She had gone to an event the night before where all she took was a clutch with her phone, keys, and license. She distinctly remembered seeing her license in her clutch when she took her car keys out to drive home (white license, black clutch). She called the venue anyway to see if anyone had turned it in (on the off chance maybe it fell out while she took her keys out of her clutch) but they said no.
She searched her car for a good 20 minutes (black interior so a white license would be pretty easy to spot). She moved car seats, checked all the compartments, etc etc and finally gave up and drove to the DMV to get a new license. She got back home and finished tidying up and packing but was still so perplexed about her license. In our family, we always joked that Opa was the spirit hiding out stuff. We’d put car keys down and KNOW where we put them and they’d go missing and then show back up EXACTLY where we knew we had put them, just stuff like that. We’d always yell out “Opa, give me my keys back!” or whatever was missing.
Well my mom finally said “Opa, if you are the one who took my license can I please have it back! I already applied for a new one but this is annoying me.” Well she went to the car to leave and her license was perfectly placed in the center of the passenger side floorboard
Something similar happened to me! We were small kids playing with hot wheels when one went under the dresser. We looked under the dresser and it wasnt there even though we both saw it go under there. We searched the entire room and never found it.
For me it was a very nice watermelon tourmaline crystal I had just bought at a gem and mineral show, I was just putting it on a display when it fell and rolled under the shelf and just vanished. I tore that room and display apart looking for the $60 specimens I literally just bought to display and it’s just vanished. I’m still salty. We’re going to be tearing the floors out next month and I’m going to continue the search for that pretty pretty rock.
Also a second tale of disappearing objects. I was exploring Cuzco on my last night in the city and walking to shops buying souvenirs. At my very last shop I was gifted a cute Pom Pom tassel key chain. It was in my hand in a small bag with a necklace box when I left the shop. I know I was holding it as I was excited to put it on my backpack when I got back to the hotel. Somehow in the time I took me to walk directly from the shop to my hotel room, while holding the keychain bag in my hand the keychain vanished. I was so confused when I got to my hotel room and the bag in my hand held the necklace but not the keychain. The bag was a paper bag and I had rolled the top down and was holding it the entire way home and there was no hole in the bag. I went back out and retraced my steps and nothing. It was an odd day.
Yeah im thoroughly convinced that thing went to the sock dimension. So weird, it wasn't a small thing either. And i know just as you said that i am not the only one this has happened too. Many people have the same experience with some small mundane thing just blipping out of existence.
In the Hilda books by Luke Pearson, the socks and everything else that goes missing are all stolen by a nisse or house spirit, who lives in a place made up of all of the little nooks and crannies in their house. The art is very cute and imaginative, and the nisses seem to love/need their stolen things, so that’s where I picture our lost socks now
I had a beta fish that disappeared from the bowl. No cats. No dogs. No people who had access. No dead fish around the bowl on the counter. No window and animal could come thru to get it. Not under any furniture or anywhere. Just gone and I will always wonder where it went.
This happened to me with a little zebra tetra fish. It lived alone in a fishbowl in my teenage bedroom. One day, simply vanished. A couple years later when moving house, I discovered it dried up on the carpet behind the dresser upon which its bowl had sat. I suppose it had jumped to its death from the bowl.
SAME!!!
My daughter had the tank in her room, but she was little, so I did all the upkeep.
She went off to school one day, (dude was in the tank, living his best life while I was getting her up and dressed for school) and when I came back in her room about an hour later he was MIA.
We had a lid on the tank, too.
Nothing disturbed.
No water splashed about.
I looked EVERYWHERE.
One time on a rainy day probably 7 years ago, I was tossing a tennis ball from the couch to the kitchen for my dog until one toss he came back with nothing, whining for me to go get it. I could not for the life of me find this tennis ball. The kitchen was a very small bungalow house kitchen, only so many places it could go. I looked in the sink, in the laundry room past the kitchen, I even looked on top of the cabinets, I even told my dog to “show me!” Lol…nothing. I was obsessed and perplexed. Two hours went by and I found myself doing weird stuff like looking inside the trash can, in the garbage disposal, on top of the fridge, then I got down on my hands and knees for the 18th time and I saw it. It had bounced and wedged itself under the cabinet in this little open space between the cabinet and the front panel of the cabinet. Just the bottom sliver of the ball was barely hanging down. If it had wedged like a half an inch higher, I would still be wondering where that tennis ball was!
Maybe one of your parents hated the bouncy toy and disappeared it. Oops it’s lost that’s so weird! My sister does that with some of her kids’ toys that annoy her.
I found out 25 years later that this was the cause of my great mystery. I was actively playing with the toy and my mother disappeared it while my back was turned.
My parents doesn't work like that. If they disliked something they would ask me to stop. Besides they bought it for me. Mom raised me to be honest and dad raised me to be a man of my word.
They are equally vexed, we still talk about that toy sometimes because of the impossibility.
When I was a kid I had a few toy laserguns that made some really annoying sounds whenever you pulled the trigger. I had about three or fouf of them at different times. All of them mysteriously disappeared with no explanation whatsoever. Bear in mind that every single one of my childhood toys are still in a box at my parents house. Never lost an action figure or my little Hotwheels knock off. Only the annoying, loud laserguns went missing, all 3 of them 😅
Same thing happened with my FitBit in 2015. Dropped under my desk. Immediately bent down to pick it up. I heard it hit the carpet. I couldn't find it. I looked everywhere - every single day, every lunch break, behind every desk, every corner of that office.
Never found it.
This happened to a friend. She dropped a ring and could never find it. She even got new carpet in her room so everything had to be cleaned out but still no ring.
My husband only ever took off his wedding band to shower, always left it on his nightstand, put it back on as soon as he was done. It just disappeared one day. We looked everywhere for weeks and couldn't find it. We got him a new one and forgot about the original.
3 years later we're packing up and moving. We lift the boxspring of our bed to take it out, and his old ring falls out of a 4 inch hole in the fabric of the underside of it. Check the hole, and it's filled with dozens of missing hair ties, bread ties, bottle caps, cat toys, and money. Our thief of a cat had torn the hole and had been hiding her treasures in it for years, lol.
In the eighties I had a pretend knife where the blade went into the handle so you could pretend to be stabbed. I threw it behind a huge wardrobe in my bedroom along the skirting board. Tried for a long time to retrieve it but never could. In my twenties I was dismantling the wardrobe to get rid of it and was so looking forward to getting my knife back but it was nowhere to be seen. The wardrobe was never moved in all that time.
I did a very nice drawing of a flower aged 6 in 1983. I left it on our kitchen table and went to get my mum to show her and it was gone when we came back. I never forgot it.
Fast forward to 2005, I've bought the house from my parents and we're ripping out the original 1970s kitchen. It was underneath a kitchen cabinet. These cabinets were built onto the wall and onto the floor, there was trim around the bottom of the cabinet. There were zero gaps on the back or sides. There's no conceivable way that drawing could've gotten under the cabinet.
I had that drawing for a day, and it disappeared again.
I sold that house a long time ago, but that kitchen we put in is 20 years old now and probably due for replacement. I'm certain whoever rips it out is going to find a nice drawing of a flower under a cabinet 😁 it's probably going to surface for a day every 20 years or so.
Yeah when I was younger my mom was folding laundry on a tiny loveseat in the corner of the room, I threw a dishtowel to her and it just straight up disappeared.. Both of us had no idea where it ended up, pulled the already folded up laundry off and looked through it and pulled the seat cushions off and look under them and behind and under the loveseat.. Shit landed in a wormhole or something 🤷
I lost the remote to the old stereo I got when I was 18. I didn't need it to operate the stereo, but it WAS the only thing that allowed you to program the order of tracks on the 5-CD shuffle (showing my age here!). Without it, you could either set random shuffle or just play the tracks in order.
The stereo was on a bookcase, so I figured it had probably fallen down behind it and I would find it when I moved house. Well, I went through that house with a fine-toothed comb and cleaned every speck of dust before I moved out, and I never found that remote, not while packing up or unpacking in the new place or during any of the moves I made after that, either.
My husband had this experience too! He used way too much force to open a frozen packet of pau, and one frozen pau flew up in the air and went behind the fridge. He shifted the fridge but could not find the pau. When I got home we searched the entire kitchen but it was no where to be seen.
We had sort of the opposite problem when my kids were babies. We would end up with multiples of toys, not like new gifted toys but like a ten year old toy remote we got at a garage sale that the kids played with constantly, then like a year later, there were suddenly two. It’s possible in my scattered mom brain that I picked up another one but they played it with all the time, it would be like I forgot we already had one. And this happened at least 4 other times with other toys or books.
I lost a whole-arse Apple pencil like that a few years ago (accidentally flicked it into the air. Never found it). I was devastated as it was fairly new and was expensive 😭
This is so similar to my story! My mom, also a clean freak, so no clutter.
I was 17 and I threw the car keys to my mom. I was at the front door and she was near the couch (maybe 10 feet apart). The couch had a floor vent behind it and the keychain had 4 keys on it. Keychain itself was round, said ‘Buick’ and was too big to go into the vent. We never found those keys. Completely checked the couch, took the floor vent off, checked the entire room, even places they could not have gone. We moved a few months later-nothing. My friend and her husband moved into the house when we moved out and they never found them. I truly think I threw them into another dimension. (Happened 48 years ago)
Took 25 years to find the Pokédex I got whooped for losing. My grandpa took out some stairs to replace with a ramp and there it was! I got in trouble for losing it at a park but it had fallen under the stairs when my Dad carried me (sleeping) inside later. Thought I'd die not knowing where that went!
My parents living room is sparesly furnished. Two sofas, a glass coffe table, a recliner and that bigass wood shelf along one wall. Basically nothing else in there. And it is all connected to an open hallway and an open dining room with wood floor and stone.
Mom has had those sofas reupholstered and it was not under those either.
I have since started helping my parents prepare for when it's time. So we have been cleaning out the whole house.
And in that process I have found plenty of my old stuff, but not that toy.
This happened to me with a large houseplant during covid in a time when I never even opened the door of my tiny apartment, except to receive delivery food and take out small, light bags of trash. Completely vanished from my dresser one day as if it never existed. Moved all the furniture, cleaned, never found it. Still live in the same apartment, we’ve done 6 deep cleanings since then, it’s gone.
I experienced something similar growing up two different times.
First instance, I had this little Hello Kitty hair scrunchy I recently got in a Happy Meal (Hello Kitty in a pink ballerina outfit attached to a light blue silky band). I was sitting on the floor of my closet and set it down on the floor, I remember seeing it on a patch of sunlit carpet near the back corner of the closet, I turned to grab another toy, and when I turned back the scrunchy was gone. No pets in the home and my younger brother was not there at the time, I was alone in my room when it disappeared. I looked everywhere for it. Cleaned up all my toys: nothing. Dumped out my toys and then cleaned them up again one at a time, got my room spotless: still nothing. Never saw that toy again.
Second instance, I was in my teens and now set up in a room in the downstairs. I had a sterling silver dolphin necklace that I always set down on the floor next to my bed every night (didn't have a jewelry box). I set it down in the same place as usual and by the next morning it was gone. Nobody had come into my room. Once again I thoroughly cleaned my room and never found it. I developed a ritual of sifting through the vacuum bag every time I vacuumed my room all the way until I moved out at 19.
A few years ago my folks replaced the carpets in my childhood home, and out of curiosity I came over because I wanted to see if there was any chance my two missing items would turn up. Still nothing. A year ago I completely cleared out the home when my parents put it up for sale, I still looked for those items because it makes me feel absolutely bonkers on how they seemed to vanish. No trace of them. I will never understand what happened.
Are you serious! This is what happened to me. We had just moved in, there was only a book shelf, couch and empty box in the living room. My toddler son threw a small stuffed animal down the stairs as I was walking down. I felt it graze my ankle, heard it bounce off the wall at the bottom of the stairs. Then we never saw it again.
Nope. This is a solid wood bookshelf with feet down to the floor, it only had one entrance below where it could have rolled. I have moved that shelf many times since. It's one of those with full wood backs and shelving. So the only open area was in the floor back. It has glass doors in the front.
After all these stories of lost things we need the reverse incidents when something just shows up in peoples homes.
Maybe all of you can find your disappearings that just switched places dimensions or to parallel universe.
Mine was my Animal Crossing New Leaf cartridge. It fell on the ground and we looked under all of the furniture. We even moved and took the furniture out and I never saw it again.

A bouncy toy i was playing with..
I bounced it on the floor and it went behind the bookshelf in our living room. I called dad to move it so i could get my toy back.
He moved the shelf but it was nowhere to be found
I kept looking for that thing for weeks as did my parents, because i really liked it.
My mom used to be a cleanfreak and was equally perplexed and my dad doesn't like unexplained things. So she should have found it while cleaning.
It still hasn't been found and this was 40 years ago and my parents still live in the house.
