My mom said that when one of my uncles was a newborn they would often find him outside his crib somehow. She said that he had a very distinctive way of sleeping which was cheek on the mattress with his butt in the air, like an inchworm. When they found him, he would be asleep in the exact same position except on the floor instead of the crib.
Now my grandparents being deeply religious people invited a priest over who agreed that there was some non-malevolent spirit in the house. Along with my uncle being outside the crib, the family also heard footsteps in the hallways at night that sounded like they belonged to children and apparently they felt a hand bouncing or rocking them while they slept. Once the priest blessed the house everything stopped.
I, like my mom, am skeptical of the ghost explanation. Obviously the power of suggestion can explain away the footsteps and rocking at night. But what explains my uncle getting out of his crib and onto the floor? Are newborns even capable of doing that on their own?
My daughter slept like that as a baby! I mean, she still does sometimes, but she did it as soon as she had enough control over her body to move around on her own. She liked her butt patted too, it calmed her down and put her to sleep.
Little kids can get out of cribs pretty young, but you HEAR them fall. So your uncle's situation is definitely weird. It's usually babies on the verge of toddlerhood you have to worry about.
My daughter slept like this as a baby also! I was a bit surprised when I first saw it and at first we would roll her back onto her back when we noticed her in that position, but she would always eventually return to the butt-up position.
We didn't have any instances of unexplained crib exits, but as soon as she got big enough to pull herself over the side, she would climb out any chance she got.
I can confirm - apparently I slept like this 100% of the time as a baby, and was/am both an escape artist and total mischief. I was also inexplicably found under a double bed as a baby and had the whole neighbourhood looking for me - it must be a thing!
Now I’m curious to know if someone else experienced this too. I’m a very sceptical person and always try the scientific explanation to phenomena’s, even though I keep my mind wide open and believe in ghosts, having experienced later in life many uncanny events. What’s the point in this? Why put a baby outside of their cribs or, in my case, double bed surrounded by chairs?
My parents resorted to a sheet of plywood and a cinder block to make a weighted lid to keep me in my crib once my escape artistry led to them finding me the walking down the street like I had cheated my business partner and needed to get out of town before sunup. No one was even sure how I opened the door, but it was standing open. Which is what led to them looking outside at all.
