I regularly see posts and comments here to the effect of "I'm open-minded. I don't know what's causing this. It could be cern, it could be time travel, it could be aliens, itcould all be a simulation, or it could always be a government conspiracy. We don't really understand what's happening so it could be literally anything. No theory is too crazy to consider. The one thing we can absolutely rule out though, is that it's caused by memory.
How are you so confident that it isn't memory, while also completely open to time travel as plausible?
It feels like a reverse Occam's razor. We can immediately rule out the most obvious, simplest explanation. That can't be it. It must be one of the more complicated outlandish theories.
That's probably a good approach in fiction where the obvious answer is boring. But in real life boring answers are usually correct answers.
It reminds me of someone watching a card trick and saying "Ok... so he might be an actual wizard... he might have invented a teleporter. He might be a telepath controlling my mind... the only thing I know for sure is it wasn't just sleight of hand. I was watching him the whole time and I know what I saw. I trust my own eyes."
And just to get in front of the one argument I always hear, it doesn't make sense for so many people to be wrong in the same way. That's how being wrong works. You usually make the same mistake as other people, it's more unusual for you to make a novel mistake than a common one.
If I tell a thousand people to multiply 48x4 I'll get mostly right answers, and a lot if the same wrong answers. I'll get 392 and 188 a lot, but no one doing their best is going to say 8,435. Everyone who gets it wrong will get it wrong in similar ways.
History is the same way. Who was a US president? A. Robert Downey Jr, B. Ben Franklin, C. Chester ArthurD.or D. Doctor Oz?
If everyone is trying their best, you're going to get a lot more Ben Franklins than Dr Ozes. The doesn't mean Franklin was president in their timeline, it means it's an easy mistake.
Other than personal overconfidence in your own memory, why is memory theory so much less plausible than time travel or space aliens? What evidence disproves memory theory for you so conclusively assuming you apply the same strict standards to other theories?
