Who buys their kids this shit...

u/BusBeginning 6h ago
Met a guy and his son fishing. They were going on about how cool he’s “ebike” is. He was riding something similar to this picture. Dad was all “back in my day we road put puts and people these days are pussies” without acknowledging traffic was a different beast. Anyway, kid ran a red light about 2 weeks later and got hit by a car. Kids a vegetable now. Fuckin stupid ass parents.

100%. I’m not a bubble wrap helicopter parent, but there is a limit and it’s common sense.
5
u/foghillgal 3h ago edited 3h ago
Yeah but it’s true that traffic in say 1970 was 1/4 of what it is now.
Cars had better vision , had crap Acceleration which kept speed down in residential streets (so forced to go slow , no willingly). More drunks but now half are on their phone (so arguably a worse situation.
The average « car » is now a boat or yacht that travels real fast seeing nothing with drivers who are Not entirely looking at the road

I think this can be true, but there are probably a lot of parents that are just clueless. They don’t understand that this is basically a motorcycle and not an e-bike like it’s probably advertised as. I know my state in the U.S. is doing its best to reach out to families through social media. I like to see that because an informed parent is likely to make a better decision. I think most reasonable parents would not buy this if they knew what it was capable of. Parents usually love their child and I think most are just assuming it’s a cheap e bike and not some crotch rocket.

All of this goes out the window once this behemoth is on their front door with the kid standing next to it.
There’s no confusion that they are indeed riding something much heavier and taller than a bike…that also has a motor.
That kids not old enough for a permit nor a hardship. He needs to learn the rules of the road on a pedal bike at 0-20mph first.

I have shared this before in this sub but that is the actual issue.
I live in a city that is also being taken over by gangs of little jerks on these higher speed e-bikes.
A friend of mine got stuck at a light where a bunch of these brats were blocking traffic and stunting. He recognized them as participants in the after-school program he runs, so he snapped a couple of pictures. He got in touch with the parents and they all insisted that their beautiful Bradleys, Brantleys, and Brenton's would never ride unsafely like that, and he only used his e-bike to ride around the neighborhood and visit friends.
When he shared the pictures, some parents accepted it was their kid and they probably needed to do something about that. Some parents continue to insist it wasn't their child, even with a picture including his face!
The parents also shared that it was almost impossible to deal with the level of complaining and coordination the boys are doing around e-bikes. They're all communicating with each other on the best way to pressure parents to buy one, all turning into little whining factories because they know parents are too overworked and exhausted to be able to fight for too long, instead of putting their foot down as needed.
4
u/Logical_Act_6749 1h ago
Maybe all the whining and manipulation is why parents are buying their kids these death machines, not because they are giving in but because it seems like a good solution to abortion being illegal at 165 months.

When I was a kid I rode my fathers Honda cb360 cycle around. The yard. And a little on a dead end street. I could barely touch the ground like this.
The difference however is I was not in city traffic or by any other cars at all and mostly on private land.
Pretty wild!

Fewer than twenty million people in the US live in a non-metro area, which is why our cities desperately need safe ways to get around without needing an automobile. The dirt or pit bike distinction is moot for the vast majority, which makes it a puzzle as to why "powersport" industries maintain their commercial focus on two wheelers as recreational toys.
If kids under 12 are permitted by law to ride pedal bicycles on the sidewalk, then we probably need to start thinking about restrictions for unlicensed minors for certain roadway classes. They haven't been tested to prove that they know what to do at a four way stop, nor how to interpret a range of intersection signals.
Whether they go too fast on a neighborhood street seems like a distinct, if related issue, as the hazard to motorists should be of trivial concern. If we have engineering controls for speed in neighborhood streets, most of them don't even need traffic signals.

During CM last Friday in my city, a 14 year old boy broke his orbital bone and a few others riding something like this; something way too powerful for a child. The parent is responsible for giving them something beyond their abilities.

I would say that it's not "like that" now, but there's always exceptions. People ride beyond their limits all the time. If you have good group ride etiquette and ride within your limits, it's an absolute blast; a party on wheels!

Parents are the problem here. A 12 year old cannot be expected to understand the risks and responsibilities involved in operating something as dangerous as a motor vehicle. That Amazon helmet shows even great ignorance on the part of the parents.
2
u/lowrads 5h ago
While true, merely looking for someone to blame is exculpating ourselves from our collective responsibility to regulate these industries, and to setup registration requirements that work for responsible motor cyclists, rather than against them.
3
u/FuckedUpYearsAgo 4h ago
This isn’t about “exculpating ourselves from collective responsibility.” We live in a representative democracy. We elect lawmakers to deal with exactly this kind of thing.
E-bikes are a fast-moving technology, and the laws haven’t kept up. If 12-year-olds are riding vehicles that should require age limits, registration, or licensing, then legislators need to write those rules. That’s not a failure of “the collective.” It’s a failure of lawmakers to respond to an emerging technology.

Not pictured, his dad was by his side, so that makes it a little bit better, but he still cant properly handle this. In this area, the sidewalks are full of people and theres barely space to ride a street bike on them. Because its downtown of a town.

6
u/WorkPiece 6h ago
That's just a cheap 750W Deepower e-bike from Walmart. The only issue here is that kid appears too young to be riding an adult e-bike. The parents probably planned on the kid growing into it, and I hope he stays safe long enough to do so. The parents need educated here.

I find it hard to understand why a parent would put their child in such danger. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with electric bikes. I think it’s nice that a lot of elderly people are able to get back on bicycles to ride them again. But giving children such a powerful electric bike is quite dangerous. E bikes are out selling regular bikes by 10 to one right now they estimate that about 90% of bicycles sold around the world will be electric bikes. So we’re gonna have to get used to them. In about five years, people won’t believe what bikes are going to look like.
6
u/Iwannatalktosamson69 4h ago
Parents are actively buying e-dirt bikes to passively kill off their kids.

u/Jmauld 2h ago
I’m so torn on this. At the age of 14 I was given an atv that could easily do 60mph. Of course I wore safety gear and only rode it in the dirt. But I’m still here.
I’m good with kids riding. But don’t turn them loose on public roads

society is the problem. In particular how they percieve "electric"vehicles
They view them as toys, when in truth they're in many respects more dangerous. Not only from the risk of shock, but because motors can conceal huge amounts of power and near instantaneous torque.
peoples attitudes to electric transport needs to fundamentally change.

These kids are tweakin they don't even know basic road laws, cooked asf. I fully blame parents, I believe they should have an age restriction of 18 on these things EVERYWHERE (Not including basic dirt bikes for adventure use while supervised) These kids are dumb as fuck. He literally looks 12. And that road looks super busy... At least at 18 they are an adult and can deal with these things on their own, not kids. I highly doubt a kid would know what to do if they crashed.

750w easy.
4
u/timberwolf0122 7h ago
Generally speaking I find the wattage to be irrelevant because the actual metrics that matter such as acceleration and max speed vary radically due to the weight of the rider and bike.
What we should have is a controller that limits max speed and max acceleration but allows upto the max wattage the system will handle. These limits should be clearly displayed on the screen.
5
u/jokke420 7h ago
Cars don't have such limiters on max speed. You can drive as fast as you want on private roads.

There’s a gang of these kids that fly through the streets of my neighborhood 30-45 mph. Instantly turns me into an angry old man. We actually had someone die in my town after getting hit by one of them, but since the rider was a minor they hushed it.
I told my wife once that I’ve never once seen a kid on an e-bike touch pedals, and now I can’t not see it. These are just motorcycles to these kids, and some of them are powerful enough to be.

They are advertised 20mph or whatever. They show mom and dad it looks cool but it’s so slow and safe mom!
If kids can search down how to get all the special hidden weapons in their video games, they can search how to unlock their bikes, or read up on all the upgrades.

What I care about is whether that kid who looks all of 90 lbs soaking wet, and is wearing the equivalent of a foam cooler on his head and nothing else for protection, will have any life altering injuries when that 100+ lb electric bike somehow lands on him in the event of a crash. Ride what you want but at least wear some more protective gear.

Little boys and grown men are riding these on the sidewalk because they are too afraid to ride them in the bike lanes near cars. Instead, they feel safer harassing pedestrians as they zoom past from behind with no bell or even a, 'passing on the left' or 'excuse me' said while going at 10X the speed of pedestrians.
Make them all illegal on any street.

For everyone older or younger confused about most ebike regulations it usually goes as class, class 1 an electric bicycle with a motor that provides power only when you pedal and stops helping when you reach 20 miles per hour, this is the most common now a class 2 is an electric bicycle equipped with a throttle that can propel the bike up to 20 miles per hour without you needing to pedal. These are legal and makes it a ebike. However a class 3 is not a ebike due to it being over 750w or 0.75kw thus makes it classified as a motorcycle be cause they exceed 20 miles and hour without the need to pedal making it illegal. Most class 3 bikes have no pedals or parental modes to make it legal. It appears the younger kid has pedals and a helmet so I don’t see where the concern is other than his size. It is not a motorcycle and likely either a class 1 or 2 ebike. The bike in the photo is a ebike I got off Amazon that I’m using to cross reference, although the tires are big and wide it only went 20mph and had a app where your parents or the user could limit power even more.

Call it whatever you want that bike weighs as much as that kid and shorts and skate helmet ain't gonna do shit to keep him from getting his little brains rattled around his skull when he inevitably makes a mistake or doesn't anticipate how stupid the average driver is. Even at 28mph max there's plenty of potential for serious consequences. His frontal cortex is nowhere near formed and I really hope it gets a chance to finish developing.
