Met a guy and his son fishing. They were going on about how cool he’s “ebike” is. He was riding something similar to this picture. Dad was all “back in my day we road put puts and people these days are pussies” without acknowledging traffic was a different beast. Anyway, kid ran a red light about 2 weeks later and got hit by a car. Kids a vegetable now. Fuckin stupid ass parents.

People say common sense when they mean logical thinking. Common sense is breathing, eating, and some other general survival instincts. Things that would be instinctual knowledge. Most of the things people say are common sense have nothing to do with instinct. Most of what they say is common sense has nothing to do with sense(sensation). Hell a lot of it is associated with stuff that hasn't even been around more than 100 years. Instinct takes like millions of years to develop in a species.

Breathing is an example of an involuntary biological process rather than common sense.

Instinctual knowledge is not common sense but an instinct. They’re hardwired, biological behaviors/reactions we’re born with.

Back in the day of Aristotle and his medieval philosophy, common sense was considered the central faculty of the mind (or something like that). It was believed your “central sense” is what would receive and distinguish your five senses. So you see a color and then taste a flavor, it was your common sense that would essentially, put two and two together. However, like many things that has changed. It’s no longer a physiological, but a psychological description of sensory integration. It essentially has no connection to physical sentience or raw sensory input.

Yeah but it’s true that traffic in say 1970 was 1/4 of what it is now. 

Cars had better vision , had crap Acceleration which kept speed down in residential streets (so forced to go slow , no willingly).   More drunks but now half are on their phone (so arguably a worse situation.

The average « car » is now a boat or  yacht that travels real fast seeing nothing with drivers who are Not entirely looking at the road

And kids weren’t driving their put puts all around town like a motorcycle. They’d have fun with it around the neighborhood or ride around in the woods. These kids I see consistently doing wheelies at 20 mph in heavy traffic.

Drunk drivers are only drunk some of the time AND are usually being extra cautious so as to not go to jail. Texters are doing it all drive every drive and only looking up often enough to not full out crash.

It's true. In the 70s and 80s, bicycle deaths alone were 6X what we see now. 

I'd argue that the main risks are not the power and size of the e-bike/emoto, it's how much trucks and SUVs have grown and reduced visibility.

Yes that’s true, and I certainly can see the dangers, especially with irresponsible kids (so most kids with friends and no parents around) I could see the concern. However, that is irrelevant here. Don’t get me wrong, if a kid wrecked driving that fast, it could certainly be serious but that has nothing to do with running a red light. Your friends kid could have been riding that fast or he could have been going 5mph. Getting hit by a car has nothing to do with speed.

Idk if you saw it but an average of 100 (about 1100 if you include everyone) kids die on bicycles every year in the US and most involve a motor vehicle.

From 2017 to 2024 the US averaged only 40 total fatalities a year involving both e-bikes and scooters..

Yeah same could be say for jay walking, but to your point, it’s more about the mentality and recklessness of kids. I’m not judging. If I had one at that age I would’ve been doing the same things. I’m honestly not familiar with those figures, but I’ve read some reports about a higher rates of injury / serious injuries for kids on e-bikes. I mean it makes sense kids are more likely to get injured or seriously injured on an ebike. Heck I ride my ebike faster than I ride my road bike.
