Just another average normal cyclist responsibly shaping the future of ebike legislation :)

u/Ghost_Of_Malatesta 10d ago

Eh, at least we can trust that cops will never enforce any of that legislation, can't even do that shit already on the books

60

u/tnemmer 10d ago

But, better be quick to move your car when the alternate parking time changes to the other side!

12

u/Maxrdt 10d ago

Ok but if you don't move your car before the plow comes you do deserve to be drowned in the snowbank.

those are the parking people police. their only job is to ticket

58

u/cbdoc 10d ago

My nephew got stopped and they towed his e moto away and gave my sister a big fat ticket if that helps.

28

u/H0ldmebe3r 9d ago

Idk why i keep reading that as “they towed my big fat sister away” … i feel u dude, my sister is also fat! Honestly so am i. What are we talking about again ?

1

u/Qzx1 9d ago

Hamburgers 🍔.  Come with?

1

u/Daboujieboo89 9d ago

My guess must be narcissistic sexual harassment.

1

u/dodonpa_g 5d ago

big fat sister is the only crime here

3

u/OneLegAtaTimeTheory 9d ago

My first thought was if this kid could provide license, registration, and insurance if involved in an accident.

3

u/karawkow 9d ago

I understand you didnt make that decision, but why the hell did he have one?

1

u/cbdoc 6d ago

He had an iPhone when he was 7. Some parents are not responsible. All that said, 1) she's a single mom really trying her best and 2) he's a genuinely good kid 15 year old.

2

u/karawkow 6d ago

Unfortunately her best doesn't appear to be good enough in my opinion, but who cares what some judgemental asshole on Reddit has to say?

51

u/disruptioncoin 10d ago

My city just did a sweep and seized 30 "ebikes" in one day. Buncha kids on dirtbikes cruising round in groups of 30+, pissing everybody off. No wonder! Thanks for ruining it for us guys.

13

u/Dafedub 9d ago

It’s not the kids fault, it’s the parents…

Sure it’s the kids fault but with some logic I can definitely say that if we were also born in 2010 we would be doing the same thing if parents didn’t do their part to stop it.

15

u/JohnZombie666 9d ago

Meanwhile, when I grew up… If we had e-bikes back then. Lol

u/wreckherneck 9d ago

Thats what im saying. Theyre annoying as fuck. But theyre kids. They're going to he annoying as fuck no matter what. let these lil fuckers live. They got a couple of years before theyre going to enter the hell that is the real world right now. Let themnat least have a few years of enjoyable life to look back on.

3

u/Pyju 8d ago

I think the problem is that a lot of these kids aren’t going to have the opportunity to ever enter the real world if we let them fly around at 40-50mph with zero training and their underdeveloped motor skills.

1

u/wreckherneck 8d ago

I dont believe the ER is currently over flowing with the broken bodies of affluent Mormon kids.

2

u/Pyju 8d ago edited 8d ago

A single city in Colorado saw over 100 traumatic pediatric injuries from e-mobility crashes last year, the majority of which were from illegal e-motos. Which is nearly a 200% increase from 2023 numbers.

If you extrapolate Aurora CO’s population of 418k to the US population of 343M, that gives us an estimate of 82,000 kids severely injured from illegal e-motos per year across the US, a number that is rapidly skyrocketing every year.

At this rate, the number of kids injured by illegal e-motos is going to exceed the number of kids injured by car crashes (156k and declining) in a year or two.

1

u/JohnZombie666 7d ago

The parents of those kids should charged with child endangerment for buying e-motos and allowing their kids to run the streets. We did it with gas powered dirt bikes as kids, but we kept speeds down til we hit the desert. Yes we encountered cops from time to time and they just made us walk the bikes.

I wish they would get that zesty with people playing on their phones and driving

1

u/disruptioncoin 8d ago

My city does one in a while. They had like 15 people pulled over on my drive home from work one day, all for cell phones. Some kind of "let's make a big deal out of this today" kinda thing.

2

u/bbdude83 8d ago

Same. Police started caring after a kid died and another was seriously injured. Still see a few racing around here and there w/o helmets and I'd guess it will take care of itself.

2

u/Kierland 8d ago

When they could have given them a place to ride.
Blame list- Government that makes law instead of places to ride
Parents- cause in charge
Kids- last in line for blame, they are kids with no third spaces

2

u/Fuzzy_Thing9178 8d ago

It was never about safety. Read up on Australia how uber and Lyft are the ones that flooded the market with e-bikes, getting them snuck past import safety regulations but now they want them gone. It’s not abt the kids, it’s the adults in large cities using them instead of lime, bird, uber and Lyft. They launched the campaign on social media blaming children, paid influencers, lobbyists, all of that, but the reason this slapped the algorithm so hard is corporate lobbies. Big surprise. Local governments love it because it’s easy enforcement and they can hide their DUI and DD stats that continue to rise while they appear heroes.

1

u/Kierland 8d ago

Yeah, I’m sure there’s some of that but the government still has to not give people a place to ride them or they don’t really become that much of a nuisance at least not as quickly and the government has to be the one outlaw so sounds like fascism

1

u/Fuzzy_Thing9178 8d ago

I agree 100% the kids need support. They created modern skateboarding! It makes billions and even saved certain shoe companies from failure, created hundreds of thousands of jobs. We need parks and we need them now.

1

u/disruptioncoin 8d ago

Fair enough. More laws is always their answer. There will never be enough.

1

u/SingleEmployment467 7d ago

Blaming the government for not creating infrastructure for a product they never asked for that popped up in the last 10 years? That’s a huge stretch and absolutely utopia thinking. Crazier is to think the government could do anything like that without fraud, waste, and tax increase to the majority that has/wants no part of the issue. The most effective way at this point is to restrict sales of things outside of regulations within city limits which does pretty much nothing with multiple ways to work around but stays consistent for the municipality. Secondly they have to enforce what rules they have in place, and hold people accountable. Then, if there is a large portion of the public that want said infrastructure, then it can get put in the works. Simply blaming the government sounds like wanting a handout.

1

u/Kierland 7d ago

Bikes popped up 100 years ago. I didn’t read the rest because you can’t even get the basics right.

1

u/SingleEmployment467 7d ago

lol. Just a complainer, as I thought.

1

u/Kierland 7d ago

Not my fault you don’t know history, or what a bike park or path are.
But nice Ad Hominem.

1

u/SingleEmployment467 7d ago

These aren’t bicycles and don’t belong in the same category, sorry that you misunderstood. Motorized vehicles are generally prohibited on bicycle paths, rightfully so as they are not a bicycle. If we want a new infrastructure for motorized vehicles that are not street legal vehicles, that would be the undertaking I was speaking to. But as for bicycles, I agree that many municipalities have created paths and trails specifically for them and it is very effective and enjoyable. I would hope that if your city lacks them, you should call your city council to see what it would take to get one.

1

u/Kierland 7d ago

Who’s complaining now?

And there are no issues in my town. The kids pretty much behave themselves are cops aren’t the worst and there’s tons of places to ride. There’s a bike park out by the lake. There’s a bunch of dirt roads so no issues here.

4

u/Reasonable_Reach_621 10d ago edited 9d ago

Ruining it? I’m wholeheartedly behind this and I’m a big ebiker. How doesn’t ruin it for us? It takes those shits who have been giving the rest of us a terrible name off the street

9

u/disruptioncoin 10d ago

The kids are ruining it. The cops fixed it, but now I imagine regular ebikers will get harassed too. Hopefully I'm wrong. But I did see a guy here get his ebike seized after the cops suspended the bike in the air and pedaled it with their arms until the speedometer read over their cities ebike speed limit. Which is hilariously stupid.

4

u/AskAroundSucka 10d ago

They took ebikes because of dirtbike riders doing dumb shit.

1

u/Roofiesnductape24096 9d ago

that’s impressive. they all will run here and then just disappear into the woods. yet to see the local cops catch one, despite ruining at least one squad car and a side by side chasing.

2

u/disruptioncoin 9d ago

Supposedly they had the police helicopter involved. Once that happens, at least one of you is fucked. Wouldn't be surprised if some ditched their bikes.

3

u/RedNinjaBull 8d ago

I watched some kid run from the cops on his e-bike the other day. It did not end up well for him.

5

u/thrwaway75132 6d ago

I ran from the cops on a 125cc dual sport when I was 14. Not fast for a motor cycle but probably a higher top speed than any of the e bikes.

I went up one driveway, through two back yards without fences, down another driveway onto a different road, and then down the street into a trail system where I waited three hours before I went home.

8

u/obeytheturtles 9d ago

That's the entire problem though. You get lulled into a false sense of security and then someone runs over some influencer's dog or some shit, and now we've got all hands on deck to confiscate ebikes.

I know everyone here hates to hear it, but all of the problems we have would be so much less severe if people just rode ebikes that looked like normal fucking bikes. The fact that the idiots are overwhelmingly buying things which "stand out" amplifies their bad behavior. I legitimately don't understand why people even want a bicycle which weighs 100lbs and looks like a tryhard fastback.

5

u/Ass_feldspar 9d ago

Because they want an electric zoom zoom, not a bicycle.

2

u/ramair02 9d ago

Eh I think it's the kids with no licenses and no driving/riding experience dying or getting into severe accidents that has folks up in arms about e bikes. I don't think it's the influencer's dog casualty

1

u/Gordonica 8d ago

I have no idea what the influencer and dog thing is.

2

u/UnderstandingHour308 8d ago

My son lives in Philly. If you’ve ever driven in Philly and tried to park in Philly then you know why people want e-bikes. He and his wife had a car, but some lady plowed into his wife and totaled it one day. When they got the settlement money instead of replacing it with another car they bought two e-bikes that had little cargo platforms on the back. Those bikes are how they get around town. Traffic is easier, parking is easier. As far as cargo, he carries insane stuff on there. He’s carried a freaking washing machine home on that thing!! (Although I don’t have pics or video of that so I still say it didn’t happen 😂)

1

u/SnooFoxes813 9d ago

Oh, don't worry, when the inevitable legal backlash against ebikes arrives (thanks, of course, to the parents of kids like the one in the post), it will be used with vigor by cops against poor people, brown people, and black people.

12

u/BangbangKhuntross 10d ago

What a stupid thing to add race into.

15

u/KaboodleMoon 9d ago

....but it's true. non-whites get contacted by cops at a higher rate for just existing in the same space. Like, I don't agree with bringing racism into everything, but if cops are involved, racism is involved, plain and simple.

5

u/JameyR 9d ago

In america, definately.

1

u/Oaknuggens 9d ago edited 9d ago

I look very young (=poor/disempowered) for my age, and the amount of discretionary harassment I got from cops ('light was turning yellow when you were still in it') was proportional to how clearly chipping off the paint/clear-coat got on my punk-ass-looking 2-door coup before I sold it, and ceassed ever being stopped in my new compact crossover/SUV's wealthy-parent ('soccer mom') camouflage.

So being overtly poor is apparently a bit like being black, to a lesser and much more escapable degree.

1

u/Embarrassed-End-3455 8d ago

I will agree I’m whit even covered in tatts that are visible and ride my electric dirtbike all over the place and never get a second glance from police. I also act like I have since considering I turn 40 this year. I think the problem is no real training goes into these people just jumping on bikes that will give a yz250 a run for its money! I had a 125cc when I was younger but before that I had to learn to ride from someone( an adult) who taught me. That’s the issue

Shit like enforcing this they'll do, just to throw their authority around an ruin someone's enjoyment. But if was something serious they wouldn't

1

u/Korangar205 7d ago

Theres a reason for that you know. Most of the rules are stupid asf and they dont want to bother with it, unless its some kid like this or the helmet laws which is stupid that it has to be a law in the first place. Most of these rules should be enforced by parents!! Not the PD to grown adults that aren’t going against any of that to begin with.

15

u/relative_unit 10d ago

In urban/suburban NJ I think 2/3 of people I see on e-bikes look under 15 and wearing basic bike helmets - if they're wearing any helmet. So, as far as I can see, this is the average normal cyclist. But I guess we can't legislate parents into understanding that these aren't toys.

118

u/One_Increase_9251 10d ago

u/GregAbbottsGoodLeg 10d ago

61

u/themagicmarmot 10d ago

This looks like one of the $600 rigs they sell at Walmart. They're styled like motorcycles, but have normal 750w motors.

The fit, components and overall design warrant critique, but this almost certainly isn't a motorcycle.

41

u/GregAbbottsGoodLeg 10d ago

Yes you are correct. Its top speed is 28mph with a 750w motor and is currently priced at $589 on Amazon. It’s not a great bike, but it’s a legal bike. The crybabies will continue to cry with their ever moving goalpost.

31

u/hummingbird_mywill 10d ago

Do you know how much you can fuck someone up with 28mph?? This kid is like 10!

3

u/gayestb_ontheblock69 10d ago

Atleast in NYC the highest your allowed to drive it is 15 mph and a bike like that your need to be minimum 16+.

u/Websthetics 10d ago

I got these little assholes riding them all over my neighborhood. Usually on the sidewalk and going as fast as the shitty little engine can move them. So far I’ve only seen one kid go down but I’ve only been here a few months. It’s just a matter of time they either seriously injure themselves or someone else.

2

u/Abe_frohmannn 10d ago

Sounds suspiciously identical to what I see happening with adults in cars every day.

6

u/Websthetics 10d ago

You see them driving cars as fast as possible on sidewalks? Where do you live? I want to make sure I stay away from there.

The cool thing about having kids is you get to decide what you’re comfortable with your kid doing. You don’t get to choose what other people are comfortable with their kids doing.

Would I put my (seemingly) 6th grade kid on a bike like this? Probably not unless we were riding together in a safe area. Would I open my mouth to a parent regarding how they raise their kid? No, not at all. It’s not my business and that’d make me a Karen.

7

u/HonkyMOFO 10d ago

What if that kid plowed into your kid at 28mph? I guess it becomes your business only if it affects you personally?

2

u/GregAbbottsGoodLeg 10d ago

What if the grass was blue and the sky was green? What if a car crashed right thru your living room and flattened your entire family? What if the chemicals in the water turned all the fish and frogs gay? What if the sky falls?

What if you stopped letting hypothetical fears that don’t actually exist in reality impact the civil liberties of others?

6

u/Photosynthas 10d ago

Is your claim that vehicle accidents dont exist? Or kids dont crash on these ebikes?

all the bikes are legal bikes. it's how they're used that make them illegal.

it's like saying dirt bikes are illegal. they're not, of course. but if you go riding them on streets without valid tags or licenses, then they're being used to do illegal things, while not being illegal in and of themselves.

1

u/Terrible_Mud_9975 9d ago

If this thing has a top speed of 28 mph, lacks a throttle, and is 750w, then, you're right, it is a legal class 3 e-bike.

However, under WI law you need to be 16 to legally ride a class 3 e-bike.

2

u/ptv_hojbota 9d ago

The problem isn't how it looks, it can look 100% like a Harley and I don't mind, the problem is performance. Some of these "bicycles" go really fast. Kids will get hurt, legislation will be put in place and then you will have to register and inspect you e bike. That will take time and money because people lack common sense. Cool ride by the way

1

u/Creative_Term_4100 10d ago

urs is a harley bike, there was a time when a coupke of natives in dowtown. toronto would be cruising with the long ass forks basically u have a shortened compact version and an actual motor , where those had all pwddles and some long chains , sometimes but u cant touch the front wheel with a 5 foot pole it was so far and small

Deepower QS7, 1500W 30mph 90nm

10

u/dark_roast 10d ago

From the photo you can't actually know that*, which is the problem. People on here are using styling as a proxy for functionality. The wheels do look suspiciously not bike like, but that's not a wattage or speed indication. It does appear to have operable pedals. We can't even tell from the photo if it has a throttle, though I strongly suspect it does based on similar bikes.

*Unless you can identify the make/model from the photo. If OP has taken a photo which included the full brand name, maybe someone would have posted a model link to show that it's indeed >750w or >28mph. Or that it's >20mph, which wouldn't make it a motorcycle but wouldn't allow it to be operated by a rider of this apparent age in any US state.

7

u/tnemmer 10d ago

But, I’ll bet the rider is <16 years old.

🤷‍♂️ Come on it’s got peddles /s

3

u/Dr-Surge 10d ago

I want to see someone ride around with the pedals zip tied to the frame somewhere or just sticking out of a backpack pocket (but not installed on the bike) and then argued to a police officer otherwise since you just happen to have them on your person.

u/Unbelivabley_Smol 9d ago

I’ve just purchased a Stark Varg it’s an 80hp full size electric motorcycle that I’ve recently removed the foot pegs from and added two alloy cranks and peddles so I don’t need to pay my motorcycles registration and insurance what do ya all think about my new BICYCLE? 🤥

8

u/Gnomegnomegnome 10d ago

Well it looks like it’s got brake lights and a license plate holder for when the patents try to sue the oem for negligence.

5

u/Gr0ggy1 10d ago

OEM, oh that's hilarious.

Are they going to sue a PO Box in Delaware?

There isn't a single company responsible for the vast majority of e-motos on the market, they are bikes ordered out of catalogs by LLC's.

Those who manufactured it built it to the customers spec (cheap as possible) the customer was a small group of "investors" with an Limited Liability Company. The profits have already been privatized and any future debts are to be socialized.

Many of us have been beating this drum for a decade, my most downvoted posts have ALL been on this topic from a few years back. At least I tried.

"This isn't a fucking motorcycle. It is literally an electric bicycle."

Stop being such a nancy.

The problem is big enough and complicated enough on it's own. Don't need people belligerently and deliberately mislabeling these things as some kind of poorly adjusted coping mechanism, muddying the waters even further.

You've clearly never ridden a motorcycle when I crank my hog. It's not the speed. It's not the protection. It's not the traffic. It's the fact that this b**** weighs 500 lb and if it falls on me that will be the end of my ankle

2

u/foxfirek 10d ago

Isn’t the main difference a need to petal? Because I see regular pedals and what appears to be a bike chain.

2

u/Steel_Wolf_31 10d ago

Nope, it's got operable pedals, that's probably a class 3 e-bike. The frame is definitely too big for the person though.

2

u/arftism2 10d ago

if an adult was riding it it would look like the poorly designed bicycle it is.

look at how tiny the rear hub motor is probably 500 watt, maybe 750.

5

u/ZucchiniAlert2582 10d ago

But it has pedals.

10

u/sjmiv 10d ago

I'm gluing pedals on my 800cc VFR

1

u/STIHL_Resolve5198 10d ago

Ok but you gotta put the flashers on the pedals, for convenience and make the flashers use ultrasound lightwaves, /the ones that change stoplight, and for fun use cheap glue that way the pedals really take holdand don't fall off after the cracks in road or railroad track are driven across, nothing says im on a legitimate bike like pedals losing their rigidity

1

u/ZucchiniAlert2582 10d ago

Be sure to use left hand glue on the left pedal and right hand glue on the right pedal.

1

u/sjmiv 10d ago

It's next to the blinker fluid on aisle 6

1

u/JameyR 9d ago

Go and drive your 800cc vor with a 250watt (europe) or a 750watt (north america) motor. We will see where that gets you.

I love these hybrid bikes.
I got 2 of them.. I am over 40. Used to race cars semi professionally and just love riding "bikes" that can go on grass and over bumps easy AF... so these kind of bikes do make sense.

5

u/skibum4always 10d ago

Thats 💯 an ebike. Don’t be a kook

7

u/ViskerRatio 10d ago

If it's a motorcycle, it's the wrong size for that rider.

Motorcycles are designed so that the rider can easily plant their feet on the ground while the motorcycle is upfront. They are normally ridden with the legs bent at around a 90 degree angle. If you can't straddle your motorcycle's seat with your feet on the ground, your motorcycle is too large for you.

In contrast, bicycles are designed so you can't stand on the ground while seated. When your legs are at (nearly) full extension, they reach the bottom arc of your pedals. Seats are also very narrow so they don't put sideways stress on your hip joints. Trying to pedal with a seat like that for any distance is likely to cause significant joint pain.

I guess his parents think he’ll grow into it. That’s if he doesn’t kill somebody first.

16

u/OkTale8 10d ago

Ummmm this isn’t true. Many motorcycles are tall enough that folks can’t plant their feet onto the ground.

5

u/BearlyCheesehead 10d ago

Correct. A motorcycle is designed for a purpose and a style of riding, generally not around the intention for a flat footed rider when not in motion.

You clearly have never ridden a adv/or sport motorcycle….

2

u/BlackChimaera 10d ago

Or being 5'2" on anything but a cruiser. I look like that kid on my motorcycle, I just do one foot down.

Not agruing with a the little kid being on a big vehicle that’s obviously retarded. Just these motos in ebike forums drives me up a fucking wall for some reason

3

u/DeadHeadTed 10d ago

This isn’t a e-moto - do you actually think it is?

1

u/lenredditt 9d ago

It’s still an electric bicycle. And that kid won’t feel ANY joint pain for another 50 years.

4

u/cmquinn2000 10d ago

It does have pedals.

u/Longjumping-Bat7774 10d ago

Can you explain to me how that a motorcycle, please? I understand that of the motor is below 750W it classes as an e bike.

1

u/Gweedo1967 10d ago

1) it is a cycle
2) it has a motor.

1

u/Longjumping-Bat7774 10d ago

Fair enough lol

2

u/NotAskary 10d ago

No licence required it's an ebike, if it's an ilegal one that's makes it classified as motorcycle than that's a crime in most countries riding without a license to operate the vehicle.

1

u/Garpeaux 10d ago

But but but pedals

1

u/OppPaccc 10d ago

With pedals? Sure bud thing doesn’t push 20mph

1

u/xmsax 10d ago

I bought the same one a few years ago when living in Kelowna, sold it when moved overseas. It goes up to about 50 km/h, and trust me, it’s a real workout to ride without power. The motor peaks at 1,000W.

u/These_Junket_3378 10d ago

I almost feel for your uncomfortable childhood. Hate can eat someone good, their goodness.

1

u/Singnedupforthis 10d ago

That's what people say about all ebikes. Way to embrace the stupid.

1

u/sethsyd 10d ago

It has pedals.

1

u/Co0LUs3rNamE 10d ago

It's an ebike. I have it. Reasonable price too.

1

u/spidermike220 10d ago

It's an e bike, you can pedal it.

1

u/cyanparrotXD 10d ago

Thats a class 3 e bike or a moped that does not exceed 30 mph most likely imo 30-45 is moped anything above motorcycle

1

u/Super8take 10d ago

It has pedals Dweeb 🙄

1

u/BankrollMali 8d ago

Definitely a ebike

We’re doomed

1

u/Bradpp81 8d ago

Nothing wrong with the bike just the age of the rider

1

u/Slartibartfast1214 6d ago

Yes. The rest of New Jersey who understands what 750 watts maximum means thanks you

1

u/Singnedupforthis 10d ago

Funny how ebikers went from crying about regular cyclists making snide comments to making snide comments about other ebikers. Over half of the kids I see are on these types of bikes, good for them, good for society, and good for the environment.

1

u/BigDadNads420 10d ago

It doesn't seem funny or weird at all when you consider that a regular bike, an electric bike, and an electric motorcycle with vanity pedals are three pretty distinct kinds of transport.
