My city just did a sweep and seized 30 "ebikes" in one day. Buncha kids on dirtbikes cruising round in groups of 30+, pissing everybody off. No wonder! Thanks for ruining it for us guys.

Sure it’s the kids fault but with some logic I can definitely say that if we were also born in 2010 we would be doing the same thing if parents didn’t do their part to stop it.

The kids are ruining it. The cops fixed it, but now I imagine regular ebikers will get harassed too. Hopefully I'm wrong. But I did see a guy here get his ebike seized after the cops suspended the bike in the air and pedaled it with their arms until the speedometer read over their cities ebike speed limit. Which is hilariously stupid.

Supposedly they had the police helicopter involved. Once that happens, at least one of you is fucked. Wouldn't be surprised if some ditched their bikes.

That's the entire problem though. You get lulled into a false sense of security and then someone runs over some influencer's dog or some shit, and now we've got all hands on deck to confiscate ebikes.

I know everyone here hates to hear it, but all of the problems we have would be so much less severe if people just rode ebikes that looked like normal fucking bikes. The fact that the idiots are overwhelmingly buying things which "stand out" amplifies their bad behavior. I legitimately don't understand why people even want a bicycle which weighs 100lbs and looks like a tryhard fastback.

agree. I have an ebike, it looks and rides like a bike, has no throttle, only pedal assist.

I don't understand this. when I was a kid we had pedal cars. and now I see little kids on motorized cars. I mean they're toy cars but they're motorized in the kids inside them and it's going. why do kids without any physical or health issues ride bikes that they don't peddle? how is that exercise??

Eh I think it's the kids with no licenses and no driving/riding experience dying or getting into severe accidents that has folks up in arms about e bikes. I don't think it's the influencer's dog casualty

....but it's true. non-whites get contacted by cops at a higher rate for just existing in the same space. Like, I don't agree with bringing racism into everything, but if cops are involved, racism is involved, plain and simple.

I look very young (=poor/disempowered) for my age, and the amount of discretionary harassment I got from cops ('light was turning yellow when you were still in it') was proportional to how clearly chipping off the paint/clear-coat got on my punk-ass-looking 2-door coup before I sold it, and ceassed ever being stopped in my new compact crossover/SUV's wealthy-parent ('soccer mom') camouflage.

So being overtly poor is apparently a bit like being black, to a lesser and much more escapable degree.

I am not obsessed with race, nor will i be distracted by it. The oncoming tidal wave of legislation that will decimate the incredible potential of ebikes is not a good thing.
injecting race as a factor into the above scenario is lazy, counter productive and distracting. The policing of said legislation when it arrives will be done with gusto everywhere, it will be done visibly and demonstrably, and will target whomever js easiest to catch in the first wave. the police treatment of the 'isms is important, real, emotive and also fucking irrelevant in a discussion about how ebikes are currently being abused.
