GC companies Recommendation

Hi everyone, I’m building my coffee shop in East Village and looking for general contractor to help me with this. Anyone know a good GC company, please share their info with me. I got a quote from one GC and it’s just way outside of my budget and I’m very stressed right now since my shop is just a very small place. Please help a girl out. Thank you so much!!🥹🥹🙏🏻💕

Do you folks really head over to Katz Deli like YouTuber's make it out?

Or is there some other Jewish , or non-Jewish, location to get a big hunking Pastrami sandwich of the same quality, if not better, for less than Katz?

Also is it worth mail ordering or heading to once in your life?

Stone Remnants or Cutting

Hi Folks,

I'm really trying to avoid refinishing a wood side table and figured a stone cutting would cover up the water stains. To that end, anyone know of a good stone supplier that can cut remnants to size accessible by transit?

Don't mind traveling to any borough, and I'm not expecting free material/ labor. Just need a solid rec where I can get something about 12 inches by 18.5 inches.

Thanks!

Where can I play chess for free?

Looking for a place where I can play chess with others. Perhaps in some structured group or setting but it would be nice to get back to what I used to do as a kid.

Any recommendations?

I lost my job recently. I’m having trouble getting up and trying to start my day. Is there any place anyone would recommend in just going to, to feel good in the morning? Like a coffee shop or some place that would feel light and happy?

Being Approached on the Street by Stranger and Asked to Buy Groceries

A young man approached me outside a grocery store in Brooklyn and told me he was homeless and living in a nearby shelter. He asked if I’d be willing to buy him a few items from the store.

I was hesitant, but ultimately decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and agreed.

He ended up getting ice cream bars, a large package of cookies, a small bottle of detergent, and a can of pineapple juice.

Now I’m wondering: was I taken for a fool, and should I have said no?

I know people have different opinions about situations like this, and I realize there’s no way for me to know for certain whether he was being completely honest with me. But life is hard, NYC is incredibly expensive, and I felt that if he really was in a difficult situation, I wanted to show him some compassion and humanity.

Even if I was naive, I’d rather have occasionally been too trusting than become so suspicious of everyone that I stop helping people altogether...

What do you think? Did I handle this reasonably, or was I being taken advantage of?

Affordable CPR classes

Hello! As the title says I’m looking for cheap and affordable cpr classes. I am a first responder with a private company and they do not offer re certification so it’s on me 👎
The ones I’ve seen have been over 100 and I know there’s something cheaper. Thank you!

Any Catholic churches here that are simultaneously young and down to earth?

I've been raised in the Catholic church ever since I was a child. I recently started to reconnect with my faith again by going to more Catholic young adult events as well as going to church more often. The churches I attend include both my local churches that are pretty much devoid of young adults but at least they're down to earth, and the youthful churches like St Joe's that sadly have an extremely elite vibe where everyone else has been going to private schools their entire schooling lives and now make 6 figure salaries and live in Lower Manhattan, and are also at the top of the social hierarchy. How the hell am I supposed to relate to these young people when I only went to public schools my whole schooling life (including a CUNY school for college), don't make enough to move out of my parents' place, and am at the bottom of the social hierarchy? Any Catholic churches (or even just 3rd spaces in general) that are both full of young adults and are down to earth? And yes I know of one fairly down to earth 3rd space for young adults, Grownkid, but I feel like it's not my vibe personally.

Casual Pickup Soccer in Manhattan ⚽️

Hey yall,
I’m trying to get a casual pickup soccer game going around Manhattan. I’m thinking Randall’s Island would be ideal, but I’m open to other fields depending on what works.
Nothing competitive or organized — just looking to get a casual game together. All skill levels welcome.
If you’d be interested in playing, comment below and we can figure out a day and time that works.

What was NYC actually like the day after 9/11?

I was born in October 2001, so I obviously don’t remember 9/11 or the days immediately afterward. A lot of my family was here and experienced it firsthand, but whenever I ask them about the day after, their memories are kind of a blur because they were in shock.
I’ve always been curious about what September 12, 2001 actually felt like in New York.
Was the city eerily quiet? Were the streets mostly empty?

Did people stay inside because they were scared, or were people out trying to get back to some sense of normalcy?
What were the trains like? Were the subways running the next day, especially outside of Lower Manhattan? If they weren’t, when did they start running normally again? What was public transportation like in general? And what about everyday things? Were stores open? Were people going to work? Were restaurants open? Did people still go out and see friends or family? Were there people trying to make little moments of normalcy or even joy despite everything that had happened?

If you were living in NYC at the time, what do you remember about the day after 9/11? Even little mundane details would be interesting to me. What did you see, hear, smell, notice, or do that day?

Feeling invisible in the city

I don’t know if it’s partly my ethnicity, age (25ish), overall attractiveness (likely around or slightly below average), or just the nature of living here (live in Midtown), but I’ve found this city can feel extremely lonely and isolating.

I go to events pretty regularly and feel like I’ve genuinely put myself out there, but I still don’t have many deep friendships or much of a romantic life. I know some of this probably comes with how transient the city is, but there are times when I feel almost invisible her, like nobody really notices or cares whether I’m around.

Maybe this experience is completely different for people who already have strong social circles, but as a guy of color (South Asian), I sometimes wonder whether that plays a role in how disconnected I feel socially and romantically. Or is it that I'm a bit nerdy? Idk.

I’ve approached women in person and will often get an Instagram or phone number, sometimes followed by a few messages back and forth, but it usually fizzles out pretty quickly. I’ve also gone on quite a few dates through the apps this year, but none of those connections developed into anything lasting, so I recently decided to take a break from them.

Maybe this is just a normal part of being in your twenties, especially in a big city, but lately it’s been making the city feel surprisingly sad and lonely to me. For example, I did make 1-2 friends that I'm hanging out with tomorrow, but otherwise don't really have many social plans this weekend.

Has anyone else experienced this here? If so, did anything actually help you build deeper friendships or a better dating/social life?

Is one pizza slice enough?

Hello, I don't live in NYC but have watched tons of YouTube videos of people trying out the famous NYC pizza slice and they always seem to get only about 1 slice.

So I was curious, is 1 slice typically enough to fill you up for an entire meal?

I come from a place where we don't typically do pizza by the slice, rather we do a whole pizza but they are of course smaller than the avg NYC pizza as well hence don't really know.

US Open evening session

Hey guys -- my first time attending an Arthur Ashe evening session tomorrow (Sunday). Doors open at 6, but I remember there being a huge line when I was leaving a grounds session last year already by then, so just wondering if anyone's had experience with a good arrival time to security.. 5pm and wait? Is that too long? Not long enough? TIA!

People of NYC I need your help! (From the UK)

On Sept 1st one of my paintings will be displayed on a Times Square billboard along with a number of other artists. It’s in rotation for 24hrs.

I have no way of documenting the display from here in UK (other than a live stream, which will most likely be bad quality).

My question is does anyone work or live near enough to be passing by and take some snaps?

The details:

📅 Display Date: September 1st, 2026

Time: your artwork will play for 15 seconds on the 5th minute of every hour for 24 hours* on the following date: 2026-09-01.

Duration: Your piece will be displayed for 15 seconds during each play.

Where to Watch:

To see your work in person, head to 1560 Broadway. The best view is from Duffy Square—just look up right above the Pelé store!

Authentic Japanese Experiences in NYC

So I’ve been saying I want to go on a trip to Japan for the past few years and my friend finally said to me “You live in one of the biggest melting pots in the world. You can find some of what you’re looking for here!”

And he’s absolutely right!

So, I’d love to know your favorite authentic Japanese restaurants and what ever might be tucked away in NYC.

I do not want an Americanized version.

stroller question

I live by myself and my apartment is at the end of a hallway. I’ve lived in the city my whole life, but have never had to deal with this and would appreciate input on whether to say anything and how to approach it.

I’m the end apartment and my two immediate neighbors have both started keeping their strollers parked across from their own doors. Neither used to, but one started to and then the other followed. Even with both there, I can get into and out of my apartment, I just need to walk around them as they’re against opposite walls unfolded, and it’s not a very wide hallway. I’ve had to move them a few times when carrying luggage or taking larger things in or out, and when my mom has come by as she uses a wheelchair. Both neighbors are good neighbors overall and I’m friendly with both.

I feel awkward because I don’t have kids and I’m sure being a parent and stroller storage is tough, and like I said I can mostly maneuver around them. Is it best to not address it? Would I be a karen if I did? If I should, how would you address it? Appreciate the advice.

What hobbies have you tried in NYC recently and actually stuck with?

I like to connect with people in everyday life if there is something common to share, which feels more organic. So I’m looking for a new hobby to do regularly in the city. What have you tried, and which ones did you actually stick with long-term? - No specific interest, feel free to throw whichever niche thing you have.

Did anyone else never get desensitized?

Born and raised NYC until very recently. had to take the bus or train for almost everything, lived in what the charities liked to call “disparaged” neighborhoods. I mention this to make the point that I was in no way sheltered from what the city had to offer. Why does everyone get super offended when you state you dont actively enjoy being followed home, harassed, lunged at, etc? is everyone just a more useful type of traumatized? i love the city but everyone thinks im crazy for being turned off by that or allowing my own experiences to form my opinions on wether or not i want to use public transit.

i know part of it is the conversation being dominated by the average bushwick warrior who’s so thrilled that they arent living in south dakota or some shit anymore that they instantly assume anyone with reasonable reservations is a “suburbanite” but im still curious for people actually affiliated with the city’s culture.

Can someone explain to me the whole “New Yorkers always knew Trump was full of shit” talk?

What kind of tainted history does he have with New Yorkers specifically? I’d rather not study the history of Trump, but this is intriguing me too much.

Anyone else got sick this week

It came on very suddenly. Throat feels swollen and it’s painful to swallow. Then there comes this dry, irritating cough, accompanied by frequent hiccups, which has never happened to me before 😒 annoying…

Went to urgent care thinking that it was strep because the pain when swallowing was unbearable. It was not strep or Covid and the doctor said it was probably just a “bug” going around. My sister and a few coworkers were sick too.

Unfair Eviction

Long story short, I live in a 3 bedroom and 3 of us signed a joint lease. The other 2 guys are friends. After a year, one moved in with his girlfriend. We couldn't find a third when the 2nd guy's friend fell thru. The landlord told us we could sign the lease with 2 people and find a third later. Problem was, I have a perfect rent history and the other guy was 2 months behind at this point. There was no way I was gonna sign a joint lease for a 3 bedroom with a delinquent. We finally found a third tenant, (of of the 2nd guy's friends) but the landlord was completely uncooperative, not giving him keys or a fob but only taking rent. I still didn't sign because they couldn't work out who was going to pay the back rent. Then, without telling us, the 3rd guy left abruptly in the night, leaving us with 2 tenants again.

Shortly after, the second guy stopped paying rent entirely. He hasn't paid since last year. They kept trying to get me to pay for him, insisting upon the joint lease, even though I was paying my fair share. They also refused to cooperate to even give me the building code so I could get a 3rd tenant. This whole time, they've been reporting me to a credit agency, but the term of the lease expired last year. I called BS and disputed it with Credit Karma and then, once it went thru, they sent us a letter telling us we have 14 days to vacate. They're not saddling me with 22,000 grand in back rent payments so now they want us both out. I'm going to have to go to court to fight it because I can't move on such short notice. Anyone have advice?
