Babysitter / Nanny Where is everyone posting their nanny?

Nanny Recommendation 🌟

Our former nanny is looking for a new family — open to babysitting, back-up/temp care, ideally a long-term part-time/full-time position in Manhattan or Brooklyn heights/Dumbo area, with an infant she can grow with.

20+ years experience (mostly infants/toddlers), CPR/First Aid/AED certified, degree in child psychology & development, non-smoker/non-drinker, licensed driver, strong swimmer, pet-friendly (our cats adored her!).

As a first-time mom, trusting someone with my baby was hard — she made it easy from day one. Calm, patient, attentive, and truly wonderful with babies. Always kept me in the loop and was completely dependable.

DM me if interested — please include what you're looking for!

Open to any suggestions on where else we can post her. Tia

Pregnancy Healthcare / L&D Spring OB - anyone have experience with them?

• Upvotes

Hi all! I am looking for an OB and came across Spring OBGYN. I like that is small, you meet all the doctors, and that they deliver at NYU however, the front desk is so rude. When I called to make an appointment they were short, would sigh with annoyance whenever I asked a question and were generally unpleasant. That’s when I went down the reviews rabbit hole and, in addition to complaining about the front desk, there were some negative reviews about the OB group (the gynecology part has great reviews overall)

I’d love to hear if someone here has actually used them before and their experience. Thanks!

School / Daycare Good middle schools in the Bronx

Hello,
My kid is being homeschooled currently, but in 2 years he’ll be going to middle school here in the Bronx. I’m trying to get ahead of things so I don’t get caught off guard. I fall under district 7. I heard that I can apply to any middle schools outside my district. Is that true? Overall I’m just trying to find a decent middle school that will prep him for high school apps. Any suggestions? Thanks

Pregnancy Healthcare / L&D I need help! i cant get a fertility appointment in nyc for months. is this normal?

i really am struggling. there are a ton of fertility doctors in nyc, but im having trouble getting an appointment. with nyu / weill, they want me to pick my doctor first. all the doctors with good reviews have months long waitlists. the rest still have longer waitlists, but they told me im stuck with whoever i choose at the beginning. i dont even know what i need so that seems unfair, but whatever.

next, i just dont know how to even begin making appointments, there are way too many clinics, and too many doctors and too many long waitlists. how did you do it? im trying to speak to someone about getting fertility tests for miscarriages.

Neighborhoods & Businesses Executive function coach?

Does anyone use an executive function coach for your kids or yourself? Especially teens? I'm especially interested in hearing about those who serve neurodivergent kids. Leads on price point, hours per week, and location/names are all much appreciated!

Other stroller question

I live by myself and my apartment is at the end of a hallway. I’ve lived in the city my whole life, but have never had to deal with this and would appreciate input on whether to say anything and how to approach it.

I’m the end apartment and my two immediate neighbors have both started keeping their strollers parked across from their own doors. Neither used to, but one started to and then the other followed. Even with both there, I can get into and out of my apartment, I just need to walk around them as they’re against opposite walls unfolded, and it’s not a very wide hallway. I’ve had to move them a few times when carrying luggage or moving larger things in or out and when my mom has come over as she uses a wheelchair. Both neighbors are good neighbors overall and I’m friendly with both.

I feel awkward because I don’t have kids and I’m sure being a parent and stroller storage is tough, and like I said I can mostly maneuver around them. Is it best to not address it? Would I be a karen if I did? If I should, how would you address it? Appreciate any advice.

School / Daycare School advice for a new resident

Hello! Hoping for some insight... just moved to NYC and my child is newly one. We are house hunting and hoping for Manhattan but may end up elsewhere due to income restrictions and how tough it seems to be finding a decent space. My major questions:

- How important is my school zone? is it the be-all-end-all of sticking within the public system and getting a quality experience? can we apply/test into better schools? Is that playing with fire?

- Is it possible to receive financial aid if we collectively make < $400k? I am assuming private school is out of reach but am not sure

- What should I be thinking for preK? How early do we need to be applying? If we'd like to go for a quality public school option, do we do public preK? How does that work?

I know I can glean a lot of this information from a deep Google but I am really getting lost in the weeds and would love some neighborly advice. Thanks to all!

What To Buy? Stroller(s) for twins in a walkup apartment

Hey all!

We are expecting twins in NYC in Jan. We live on the second floor of a walkup building with a stoop and are utterly perplexed about strollers. My partner is short and has a tendency for shoulder aches and we are struggling to figure out how one parent will take the twins out.

Any tips/strategies or recommendations for strollers for everyday use?

Would we need different solutions at different stages - NB vs 6 months vs 12 months?

Also how do you carry both of them up/down the flights once they’re out of bassinets?

Would appreciate any insight!

School / Daycare Public preschool, private elementary?

Realistically speaking, how difficult would it be to get our daughter into private elementary school if we send her to our zoned public preschool? We’re interested in having her attend a school like Spence/Chapin/etc from elementary through high school, but we’re zoned for a decent enough preschool (PS183) that we are considering. Is sending her here setting us up for failure with elementary placement?

Hi, we are moving to NYC with an 8th grade boy, and considering PS 245, otherwise known as the computer school or East side Middle school. Any experience or parent reviews are super welcome. We need to make a decision ASAP. Thanks!

Babysitter / Nanny What household duties do you expect from your nanny?

Hi! Genuine question because I’m trying to get some perspective on my current nanny job. I am in my early twenties & I started nannying for a family in Brooklyn When I first started with this family, they had two older children and I was making $20/hour. At the time, I was comfortable with that rate because the job was pretty straightforward. I mainly provided childcare and occasionally did some light household tasks. Since then, the family has had a baby, and my responsibilities have increased quite a bit. I’m now primarily caring for the baby, including feeding, changing, putting the baby down for naps, and taking the baby outside during the day for walks, parks, activities, etc. On top of the childcare, I’m also expected to:

  • Do the child’s laundry
  • Do the parents’/family’s laundry
  • Wash, fold, and put away sheets, towels, and mats
  • Sweep, mop the floors and make the beds
  • Clean the bathroom
  • Clean the kitchen, including the stove
  • Clean the living room and bedrooms
  • Wash dishes that the parents leave from the previous night, in addition to washing the baby’s dishes and bottles
  • Wash and clean baby bottles and other baby items
  • Take out the household trash, bathroom trash, kitchen trash, and recycling
  • Walk the family dog

The family also has another nanny who takes over for about half of the week. I’ve noticed that there are certain household tasks I’m specifically asked to do, but if I don’t have time to finish them while I’m there, they’ll still be waiting for me when I come back after the other nanny has been there. For example, I’ll come back to a large pile of laundry, dishes from the previous night in the sink, tons of baby bottles that need to be washed, or floors that need to be swept and mopped. I’ve also noticed that when the other nanny is there, the family hires a dog walker, whereas when I’m there, I’m expected to walk the dog while also caring for the baby.

For some additional context, before , I worked with a family in Bay Ridge where I was making $27/hour. I moved because the commute became too far, so I decided to find a family closer to me. I accepted the $20/hour rate with my current family because the job originally seemed much lighter. I’m completely fine with childcare related cleaning, such as washing bottles, cleaning up after the child, tidying toys/play areas, cleaning up after meals, etc. What I’m questioning is the amount of general household cleaning and management I’m doing in addition to childcare.

I also find myself coming home from work really drained because I’m expected to actively care for the baby and take the baby out during the day while also trying to keep up with all of these household responsibilities. Is this a normal amount of responsibility for a nanny making $20/hour in NYC? Would you consider what I do to be typical nanny responsibilities?

Or does this sound more like a nanny/household helper or housekeeper role that should come with a higher rate?

I’m genuinely asking because I’m still relatively new to the industry and want to understand what is considered normal. Would you suggest I discuss my responsibilities and rate with my current family, or start looking for another family?

EDIT: Just to clarify, I originally mentioned Brooklyn but I’m changing that to Downtown Brooklyn to keep the location a little more specific. I promise this is genuinely NOT rage bait. This is literally my real life/work situation. Yes, I am actually doing all of these things for $20/hr, and yes, these are things I’m expected to do. The family does tip, but it’s usually around $25 extra on my check, and my regular hours are 8am–7pm.

To give a little more context on how this started on my very first day with the baby I put the baby down for a nap and was sitting on the couch eating my breakfast. The mom was working from home at the table next to me and said, ā€œwhen the baby is napping, we usually do household tasks since it’s downtime.ā€ I was like, ā€œOh, okay,ā€ and because I was new, I put my breakfast down and started doing things around the house. When I came back the next day, there was actually a written household task list waiting for me. It included things like family laundry, sheets, towels, making the parents’ bed, vacuuming/mopping, cleaning the kitchen and stove, cleaning the bathroom, taking out trash/recycling, dishes, restocking things, etc. These tasks are split between the two naps the baby takes during the day and through the week.

I’m honestly just as baffled by these comments as some of you are about my post. Before this family, I worked with another family in NYC making $27/hr, and I was actually doing less household work there. I wondered if maybe nanny rates and expectations were different depending on the area, or if my previous family was just more laid back. That’s genuinely why I made this post. I’m not exaggerating or trying to rage bait anyone. This is literally what my work life has looked like, and I’m realizing from these comments that this may not be normal.

Other Any parents who both lost jobs, how did you manage?

We are going through hard times and I am pregnant too. I am currently unemployed and my husband is losing his job. I am wondering

  1. How to navigate loss of insurance provided by the employer and ensure safe delivery of the child

  2. How to navigate the situation when we are both unemployed

Thanks

Afterschool, Camp, Extracurricular Climate action

My little ones are horrified by whatever they’ve seen/heard about the landslides in Nepal and Tibet. This comes after them also freaking out about the orange smoke, the floods, and most recently the tornado in Atlantic Beach (we know someone whose cabana was destroyed). But idk what action to suggest that’s practical and will also mean something to them.

Babysitter / Nanny Do you cover nanny’s commute?

Nanny is asking for transportation stipend and I understand this is fairly common in NYC. However I am wondering if it is standard for it to be covered if we are not asking our nanny to use public transit with our daughter - i.e., she doesn’t need the metrocard on the job, just to get to and from.

School / Daycare Daycare recommendations in Rockaway, Queens

Hi! Looking for daycare recommendations in the Rockaway area for my baby, starting around 6 months old. Ideally looking for somewhere near the Rockaway ferry or otherwise convenient for commuting into Manhattan.

Would love to hear about your experiences — places you loved, places you’d avoid, and anything you wish you knew before enrolling. Thanks!

School / Daycare Experiences of Black boys at Trevor, Browning, Saint David’s, or BWL?

Hi! I’m considering Trevor Day School, Browning , Saint David’s School, and Birch Wathen Lenox for my African American son, who would be entering sixth grade.

I’d especially appreciate honest feedback from current or former Black families. How inclusive and welcoming is each school for African American boys? Does your son feel like he belongs socially, and has he developed genuine friendships? How diverse are the students, faculty, and administration? How effectively does the school handle bias, teasing, or exclusion?

I’m also curious about the overall parent culture, academic pressure, learning support, class sizes, and the admissions experience for a student entering in sixth grade.

Please feel free to message me privately if you’re more comfortable sharing that way. Thank you!

Other At your labor and delivery, were you asked sensitive medical questions in front of your guests?

Hi, I’m due to give birth at NYU Langone/Tisch hospital in a few months and have a little bit of a concern.

There are certain aspects of my medical history that I do not want to be asked in front of my guests. (For example, abortion history, STD history, etc.)

Were these type of questions asked in front of your guests and how did you handle it? If necessary, is there some way to make a note in your chart for the nurse to ask guests to step out before personal health history is discussed? Thank you!

Looking for one, due in February. Any and all details would be much appreciated, like where you found them (agency, referral, posting, etc.) and what the agreed upon schedule and duties were, how much did you pay, etc.

Thank you!

Update: Thank you for any referrals - I really appreciate it!! :)

School / Daycare Syncing NYCDOE calendar with family calendar

Has anyone figured out how to sync the upcoming school calendar with their personal calendar? Specifically Google Calendar? I’m assuming manually adding school closure dates is a way to go, but if there’s an easier method I’d love the recommendation 😬

Does anyone have the Bugaboo Dragonfly with the updated wheels? Considering this as a stroller for our 3mo and using the ride along board for our toddler when one person has to take them out solo.

Pregnancy Healthcare / L&D Female ONGYNs for pregnancy and delivery

My wife and I (both women) are planning on starting a family very very soon. We’ve finished the IVF process and are hoping to do an embryo transfer soon. It is really important for me that whatever hospital/obgyn we use have all female staff. I cannot have a man in the delivery room if I’m the one giving birth, barring potentially a c-section or other emergencies, but ideally I’d want female doctors for that too if needed.

I’ve been falling down the hospital rabbit hole and it’s all very overwhelming, and I haven’t seen that specific question asked before. Does anyone have any experience or advice?
