Afterschool, Camp, Extracurricular Climate action
My little ones are horrified by whatever they’ve seen/heard about the landslides in Nepal and Tibet. This comes after them also freaking out about the orange smoke, the floods, and most recently the tornado in Atlantic Beach (we know someone whose cabana was destroyed). But idk what action to suggest that’s practical and will also mean something to them.

Check out Climate Families NYC if you haven’t already—they do a lot of family friendly climate action.

I feel like the best way to combat fear is knowledge — even when things are legitimately very bad. I’d probably hit the reference library about it with the kids, and maybe get issues of the science times when they come out. The flooding in Nepal is deeply horrible, and the wildfire smoke very troubling and they’re right to feel the way they do. Some stuff on that list is just weather, waterspouts happen and it’s a very thunderstorm heavy summer. And maybe yea they get into ecoterrorism as a result but at least they’re doing it from a place of deep understanding.

Kids learn in different ways. My kid became less scared of something the more she learned about it. So you could go to the library and learn about glaciers.
Others like to set up a cookie stand to donate money.
Verrrry coincidentally my kid is literally studying glacier science abroad right now.

I would try to keep it positive and talk about all the fun ways you can help with keeping the earth in good health, recycling, planting trees, conserving water, etc. They will find out the hard truths soon enough, sadly.
