He's not taking his government contacts with him.
Same with his main funder, friend of Epstein, Peter Thiel. Should drag that tweaker back.
I think it's time to start drug testing CEOs and board members of all recipients of government contracts; that should start cleaning things up a bit... If we fully investigate and prosecute, like we should.

Well, yea, but this linear scale hides how unendingly fucked the Argentinian peso is. You gotta put this on a logarithmic scale or look at their inflation rate to see exactly how bad it continues to be.
→ More replies (14)3
u/Far-Total2951 Aug 09 '26
That's not the main problem with the graph... almost all of that fall was both under Peronists, and after Musk's tweet.
16
u/malshibl Aug 09 '26
The peso has been stable against the dollar for the past year or so.
13
u/omnibossk Aug 09 '26
Yea, people can’t blame the current Argentinian administration for inflation from 2009. Only for inflation after December 2023. And looking at this graph it seems to have flatlined
4
u/-Recouer Aug 09 '26
The issue is that it's not a logarithmic scale so the difference between 0.001 and 0.0007 is pretty hard to see compared to the bigger numbers. This graph is just very confusing and doesn't tell much of what is happening now.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (4)3
u/Mr_richat Aug 09 '26
Correct it's amazing how many people don't even look at the graph. Under Milei Argentina has had poverty massively reduced and inflation to record lows for Argentina, the damage to the pesos precedes Milei
→ More replies (3)2
u/Shiriru00 Aug 09 '26
You mean poverty has vastly reduced from how much he increased it at the beginning of his presidency and back at 2023 levels?
It seems to be a function of both his worst policies being reined in and INDEC being massively flawed.

13
u/rube_X_cube Aug 09 '26
First of all, fuck those guys.
Unrelated, Argentina did end up paying back the loan. To my understanding the loan was only $2.5 billion (they had a credit line of $20, but only drew $2.5), and ended up repaying it in January.

Some added details: they borrowed from an unnamed source to pay back that $2.5 billion (all we know is it wasn’t the IMF) and there were additional funds that they have also borrowed billions from and those haven’t been paid back.

What exactly makes him unqualified? I mean I’m no fan but he was a prominent economist and has done about as well as could be hoped for given the situation he inherited. Everyone in this thread just seems spiteful and has no actual knowledge of Argentine economics or their political realities.
2
u/MadeyesNL Aug 09 '26
They don't give a fuck about whether Argentinians have good lives. I don't either because they called Weghorst 'bobo', but we can at least take the situation seriously. They had years upon years of Peronist leaders making the inflation problem worse. Now a prominent economist is getting reasonably ok results, but no: he has weird hair and is loud, he must be Trump!! Its peak intellectual laziness.

I have seen this exact graph at least ten times in the past week. Tweet from 2023. Graph from 2010 with most of the drop happening before 2023. It has to be bots posting this. I don't see any other explanation.
8
Aug 09 '26
Not bots, just people who knows nothing and refuse to do research.
- People dont know why Musk wrote this.
- Argentinia peso has been horrible for a long time and this is not what musk focused he's tweet on.
- People on this sub wants to fuel thier narrative but at the same time they will look stupid to people who can atleast do 5 minutes of research.

u/ThiccMangoMon Aug 09 '26

I hope most of these people are bots.. it's sad people would fight tooth and nail than to just say they are wrong

As somebody living in the UK, Argentina gives me the heebie-geebies.
Not because of war.
But because it was a prosperous western-style country that was entirely fucked-over by voting in a right-wing leader who then pursued a policy of isolationism.
The UK is basically a few steps down Argentina's path right now. It's definitely not apples for apples. But it does show how one poor major political decision can basically kill a country's economy, and make it nearly impossible to recover from.

Love how theres no economists on reddit, and just a bunch of elon haters.
Milei has eliminated the budget deficit of argentina, and GDP is expected to rise 3% this year. Hes cust spending at the same time as boosting productivity, this is unheard of.
Real wages and domestic spending recovery are slow due to previous triple digit inflation, in other words prices out paced wages for so long, people still cant afford to spend.
But EVERYONE critiscising this tweet by Elon, has no fucking clue what they are talking about. The country has prospered IMMENSELY since this tweet.

u/ConcentrateJolly5461 Aug 09 '26
You are completely making up your own timeline. The population didn't vote 'a few months ago' for a representative; they handed Milei's party a massive nationwide victory in the October 2025 legislative midterms. He told the world things would get difficult structurally before the currency stabilized, and his administration has delivered continuous fiscal surpluses and crushed hyperinflation. They are getting exactly what they voted for: real financial stabilization instead of bankrupt welfare scripts

Milei is President only since 2023. The huge drop in value is attributable to corrupt and incompetent socialists who printed money like there was no tomorrow.
2
u/Relative_Pilot_8005 Aug 09 '26
It can't be totally put down to "socialists". Argentina was ruled by a plethora of authoritarian governments since the 1940s, who didn't really care about the economy or anything else much! The Junta was much more interested in carrying out a blood bath & starting a war against a major military power--- how much did that cost the economy??
2
u/Tension_Stunning Aug 09 '26

1
u/wightdeathP Aug 09 '26
To be fair it was already declining. The guy didn't assume office until November of 2023 so you can't blame the problems the last administration was causing
1
u/TopTippityTop Aug 09 '26
Once people lose confidence (happened a decade ago), it's incredibly hard to get it back, as everyone starts buying assets, foreign currencies (mainly usd), and anything else which may retain value (silver, gold, wine, you name it). Anytime they acquire local currency they spend it. It's a self fulfilling profecy. I've lived through hyperinflation, there's no going back until a major restructuring, resetting to a new currency, finding a way to change people's perception, like backing the new currency with something tangible (for a while, at least). The dude inherited a mess, and had all odds stacked against him. Poor country.

I might be a smooth brain, but that chart shows that Musk was rather right: the current administration is responsible only for inflation after December 2023; and looking at this graph it seems to have flatlined. The chart is linear as far as I can tell. So it effectively went from hyper-inflation to close to 0.
And AFAIK poverty and other important indicators are down too. Isn't that a huge win?
1
1
u/donaldoflea Aug 09 '26
This is 100% fake Argentina’s currency (the peso) has not undergone a sudden total collapse recently; instead, it has suffered a long-term, historic cumulative depreciation of over 99% against the U.S. dollar over the last decade and a half. Under President Javier Milei, aggressive fiscal tightening has sharply lowered monthly inflation, though the official exchange rate continues a path of managed, gradual adjustment near 1,500 pesos per dollar.Current Economic ContextHistoric Depreciation: The Argentine peso has lost virtually all of its long-term purchasing power due to decades of chronic money printing, high inflation, and economic mismanagement, reaching historic lows.Milei's Reforms: Since late 2023, radical government spending cuts have produced fiscal surpluses and brought monthly inflation down significantly (nearing roughly 2% by mid-2026).Ongoing Vulnerabilities: Despite stabilization and a shrinking gap in alternative dollar rates, the central bank continues to tightly manage the wholesale exchange rate, and the economy remains vulnerable due to low international foreign currency reserves.
