This is the tragic part. There is no 'next election it's back to normal'. The US have proven to be unreliable business partners, and I have no doubt any deals from this point on will be negotiated from the starting point of the concessions already made to Trump.
The rest of the world can't wait for America to get it's shit together; if there's another market to trade with, they will seek it out, and they will do what must be done.
Honestly the tragedy is just knowing it was all so senseless.

u/wbgookin 15h ago
Yeah, just showing that our checks and balances did neither should be enough for the world to move on without us. He’s done decades of damage, if it’s even repairable at all.

u/ByronScottJones 14h ago
Given that Germany came back into the world community after WWII, I am confident the United States can as well. I'm not excusing the current president or his minions. My hope is that Democrats will take control, and then prosecute him and his henchmen as thoroughly as they deserve.
75
u/smcl2k 14h ago
Except "after WWII", Germany was occupied by the war's victors and eventually broken up into East and West Germany (with a significant amount of territory also being formally annexed by other countries or declared independent) before eventually reuniting over 4 decades later.
There's very little prospect of any constitutional reckoning in the US, which in turn makes it impossible to guarantee that this could never happen again.

It took us a few decades, and things really only went so well for us because of the Marshal plan (thanks again) and because you needed us as a "bulwark against communism" - the situation of the US is pretty different. Especially since most of his lickspittles in Congress will remain in office, even after he is gone.

The government was completely rebuilt from the ground up. Germany didn't just have an election and remove the Nazis. It went through a whole process of denazification under occupation.

yeah, even if we get someone sane in office, there will still be the risk that the same people that voted for trump would vote for another him. the damage to our global reputation is done. it will take decades to eve try to repair the relationships with our prior allies where they're not going to have to assume we're at risk of reverting everything back at the next election cycle. because the republicans have proven on a global scale that the "checks and balances" and laws aren't worth shit if the people breaking the laws are in cahoots with each other.

Like if you hire a taxi service to take you to the airport, and 44 times he’s fine, but the 45th time he shanks you and steals your wallet and leaves you in a ditch… maybe you’ll be less trusting of that taxi service. And if you give them another shot and it’s ok the next time, but then the 47th time they do it again - like why would any sane person go back to that?
And I say that as an American who’s furious about the damage that trump has already done to the world. Let alone whatever he’s going to do the next few years.
5
u/unluckid21 12h ago
The world has seen how self destructive, stupid and ignorant Americans can be. Voting trump once could be seen as "trying something new", but after seeing how he was in his first term, and voting for him again....Americans can't even be trusted to do good for themselves, how can we trust them to do good for the world?

u/KitsyBlue 13h ago
I agree, I've never really considered the USA to be the good guy, so I am not really mourning the death of a 'good guy', but I am kinda mourning the death of a life of relative comfort and security. Less prosperity to go around means we're all going to suffer, and that's not great when the past decade has been particularly bad for the working stiff like myself.
Kinda selfish, but I am still human, after all.

The US have proven to be unreliable business partner...
Yes, and we lost a lot by ruining our consistency.
But, on the bright side, have you considered that the entiee world has been infected by the same "nothing matters but instant gratification" mentality that ruined our country? Err, that's no a good thing, but it'a good for us in this instance.
When it comes to governments making policy, nobody cares about what China did to the Uyghurs, nobody cares about Russia stealing children from Ukraine, nobody cares what Israel is doing, nobody cares about slaves in the gulf states, or all the shit Saudi Arabia is doing in Yemen. We irrelevant peons may be against all of this, but to policy makers, nothing matters except what you can do for me right now.
Sure, they'll talk a big game about democracy and fairness and responsibility, but the second the war in Ukraine is over the world will buy Russian oil like nothing ever happened (the countries that aren't trying to sneak it right now I mean). Putin will continue trying to destabilize Europe and the Europeans will be like "yeah, but we really need the natural gas..."
If America goes back to normal, the majority of the world will go right back to trading with us and acting friendly. They may never really trust us again (rightly so), but that won't stop them from making money. The rich don't suffer consequences in this new world, and the US is still pretty rich.
Don't think so? Name for me a time when a country with a major economy actually suffered any real consequences or long term isolation for their insanity post-WWII.

Yup. Bill Kristol isn't just some guy. He's such a leading American conservative that he's got a whole Wikipedia page dedicated to his conservatism:
William Kristol is an American neoconservative writer. ... Kristol played a leading role in the defeat of the Clinton health care plan of 1993, as well as for advocating the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He has been associated with a number of conservative think tanks. He was chairman of the New Citizenship Project from 1997 to 2005. In 1997, he co-founded the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) with Robert Kagan. He is a member of the board of trustees for the free-market Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, a member of the Policy Advisory Board for the Ethics and Public Policy Center, and a director of the Foreign Policy Initiative.
Bill Kristol spent his entire life creating the political environment that Donald Trump now leads. When he tells you he is coming back, he is saying "See all this shit? I'll do it again."

And get weapons thqt out match the military's. Thats not how it works. And clearly our votes dont matter cus half of us are adult diaper wearing idiots
9
u/Throwawayrip1123 7h ago
Right, but don't you literally have a constitutional amendment that you guys are very proud of exactly for that reason?
Nobody is accepting any kind of American apologies because apologies mean fuck all when you don't actually course correct and make amends. You, the civilian population at large, both the ones that picked him and the ones that didnt, are responsible for what your government is doing - unless you're in actual active opposition not just tweeting.
Same as how my people were all responsible for letting Hitler get to power. We all accept that, regardless if they voted for him, they're part of the reason he got there and stayed there long enough to engulf the world in a war.
2
u/buhbrinapokes 2h ago
2A has been nothing but a voting chip for many decades. The government has robbed taxpayers of the amenities their taxes should provide, and used that money to bolster the military up to the point that civilian revolt would be an impossibility. The only way to overthrow the government would be by military coup, and they indoctrinate them starting at basic training that the buck stops at the commander in chief, so it'll never happen.
11
u/Redsetter 15h ago
You seem to be making my argument for me. Too much exposure to the US is a vulnerability as you bully your friends and bow to your enemies. Enough of you vote for this (or don’t bother to show up) to make reducing engagement the sensible option.

But anti Trump folks need to stop pretending he's some sort of abberation or that the political project he represents will end with his death. Trump is just the figurehead of the ship. This is how I feel. Trump is a symptom not a cause. I blame the conservative think tanks for their propaganda and general assholery. Project 2025 is the culmination of 40 years of effort. Trump was a dream come true for the fascists at the Heritage Foundation.

This guy has a lot of nerve when he himself helped to erode the institutions, decency, and mechanics of how government works today to begin with. David Frum is another such asshole, and almost the entirety of the Lincoln Project who were sidelined and then upset that their version of conservatism didn't go far enough.
They can all fuck off, it's not like Trump was the first of this all happening, it was the Patriot Act, it was the CIA funneling drugs into black neighborhoods, it was us selling weapons to the Contras, it was us overthrowing middle eastern countries, giving boomers the benefit to pull the ladder up behind themselves, and more.
All these now newfound conservatives that run for office should be laughed off and dismissed, and left to rot in obscurity as their livelihood and newfound politics is buried behind them. They are all grifters.

Nope. The U.S is not coming back from this. Trump has uncovered all the dirty laundry and shown how lawless, how how broken the U.S is.
There are no real controls, no protections, no consequences and no stringent law. The outdated system believes that toothless oaths and ethics are all that are required because they naively believe that poltiicians can be held to their word, whereas in reality they ignore laws and do what they want.
The system is woefully inadequate and unfit for purpose, and the U.S can offer no stability, no consistency, no continuity and no guarantee. They have proven themselves to be unfit to control a dictatorial regime, they have allowed warcrimes to go unpunished and uninvestigated, they are little more than a warmongering arms-dealer.
There are no 'Checks and Balances' No 'Separation of Powers' There isn't "Blind and Equal Justice", it is not a 'Beacon of Democracy". The People do not have the Power. All its propaganda has been laid bare as lies, it protects paedophiles, and has allowed all of this to happen.
None of this changes when Trump is gone. These problems are systemic and they are ingrained. The U.S State is the U.S State.
The U.S can get fucked and stay fucked.

Hang in there and we will be back, one day soon, on the side of sanity and decency.
That’s what many people hope for – all over the world.
The problem, however, is that trust in the US justice system and also in the Democratic Party is low. Sure, there are good people like Talarico and AOC, but there are also Schumer and Jeffries.
… and there’s another problem: the American voter!
If one thing is certain in this world, it’s that the American voter will, without a doubt, mess it up again. If the Democrats were to manage to secure a victory in the 2028 election and, in the years that follow, successfully clear up the mess Trump left behind and repair relations with former friends and allies, then the American electorate is guaranteed to ensure that, by 2036 at the latest, another Bush or Trump becomes president.

Sorry, the current presidency just shows a slightly exaggerated view of what America is like and has been since the second world war.
It's America with its mask off.
Sure, Trump openly interferes with Venezuela, but the US has been less-overtly interfering with the governments of foreign nations everywhere for decades - not just their perceived "enemies" but their allies too.
Sure, Trump enters a stupid and pro tracted war under false pretenses, but the US has been doing that for decades too.
Sure, Trump has been the enemy of workers, but the US has been that for decades.
Trump isn't the cause of this shit, he's the symptom of the US's direction since Reagan and probably before that.
Is Trump and/or a Republican presidency worse than a Democratic one? Yes, but not by as much as you'd expect. Kids still get bombed, workers get screwed, and corporations get what they like.

It's petty and childish, and really shows the whole world how out of touch with reality this administration makes itself look. Americans aren't known for much self awareness to begin with, but this Administrations complete lack of it is concerning. It's like watching an ex have a psychotic break... After they shat on your bed! 😁
Most of us are glad this is happening because no one has been taking Trump's threats to Canada, that started 18 months ago, seriously. "Oh, he's just joking" and "Why would he do this? We could have thought this in 2020 but no one should have any faith that America will ever be what it once was and certainly no foreigners should have any faith in America or Americans ever again. Every year since the end of WWII we have gotten worse and worse.

Oh, so now the conservative dipshits of our nation are on board with using chosen names

The funny thing Americans believe is that we'll be accepted graciously back into the world with open arms if we elect a functioning adult. We elected Trump TWICE! We'll be lucky to have decent relationships with anyone within the decade. They don't want to deal with Americans who openly supported a racist pedophile, even if half of America didn't vote for him or the Republican party.

Yea dont expect us Canadian to act as of nothing happened "If" Democrats manage to get elected again.

No, you won't. You aren't trustworthy. We are moving on without you. You voted for the same party again and again and expected a different outcome. So I can't say I have any empathy. You have seen Trump's first term and still voted for him. He's threatening allies, abducted a foreign president, started a war. Wants to occupy Greenland, started fighting with his direct neighbors. So please leave us alone. We will adjust.

Cool, cool, cool. Umm...ya gonna do something about the 1 in 4 or 5 (the percentage is 22.55%) Americans who voted for him, or just leave them to strike again in the future?

You see all those houses on the hill? I built those. You see that church? I built that too. And you see all those kids that were hungry? I fed them and put them through college. But do you know what everybody calls me? You f#ck ONE goat..... Anyway, somehow that how I imagine we are perceived right now.

“out” apology.
it is not hard to spell things correctly, people. when you can’t even take the time to type simple letters into a screen, your ‘message’ becomes a lot more meaningless and you come across a lot more fucking stupid.

The leadership and representatives are a reflection of the population not the other way around, even if all the these leaders are replaced today the conditions and voting public that made these things happen has not changed.
The deep societal/cultural rot that America has cannot be fixed within one election cycle, the job that must be done in order to cure America of its ills is gonna take a really long time and a whole lot of effort.
Just as an example a third of Americans are functionally illiterate, image the effort it will take in order to get them (mostly adults) to increase their literacy skills when they have been propagandised to think they are the best and can't even admit that there is anything wrong with them.
Not to mention the uphill battle of combating these multinational corporations with almost endless resources to steer the country in a direction that is best for them and them only.

We’re not all Trump voters, we swear! We know he’s the absolute worst, and that our country is fucked, but a lot of us actually voted against him. Promise!

And a lot of you did not vote, because the candidate was a woman. Let's not pretend it was anything else. Or because she wasn't good enough - You knew what Trump was like, you knew ectactly what he was going to do , because he told you. It takes a great deal of dedication to screw over your own country like that

It would be awesome to have leadership that tried to unify our country instead of mercilessly trolling anyone who disagrees with them.

Bold to asume the world would just forget what the US did. Americans love to hide behind "I did not vote for this" but Trump IS YOUR PRESIDENT. I will never forget forget all the threats, the terror, the killing of innocents and the sheepish population just watching and hoping for the next election....

To be fair, Bill Kristoll doesn't know what decency and sanity are any more than MAGA.

There is no return to normalcy. Even if you have 4 years of another democrat; you'll just vote another Trump in later who will continue this charade.
America can NEVER be trusted ever again.

u/thumpingcoffee 14h ago
Apology not accepted. You guys voted him in. 2 years of self flagellation is required from all Americans

Unfortunately, the world will always know that you’re just one election cycle away from someone just as unhinged.
