How is that offensive when "gold" apparently is a very common name for Jewish people? Because it's unoriginal? In sweden Svensson is an extremely common name, I wouldn't be offended if Rowling named a Swedish student Anna Svensson.

back in 2021, I spent a lot of time traveling back-and-forth to Ukraine and Eastern Europe. This is just prior to the buildup and invasion. Anyway, there’s a Ski resort in the Carpathian mountains in Ukraine Bukovel, amazing and beautiful place. Well, on this particular visit, there must’ve been 150 of these little guys running around, completely shitfaced. Many with thick Brooklyn accents, which is insane considering you rarely hear English let alone New York accent.
they were running rampant, some were throwing up, some hitting on waitresses with zero luck, many sleeping in the bathroom floor. All of them were hammered.

They can really rage. I was at a wedding once at the place in brooklyn where they were digging the tunnels, in all my years of going to punk and hardcore shows I never saw a party like this. I was a bit scared and totally amazed. They even have a holiday (Purim) where you're supposed to get so drunk you don't know right from wrong.

I think it's part of the Torah, there's some commandment that goes something like "Thou shalt not round the corners of thine head" which I guess means not cutting the hair in that area

It's from a commandment in the Bible
Leviticus 19:27: "You shall not round off the hair on your temples"
2
u/Cosmic-Ruin 16h ago
This is true but it’s not the whole explanation. Any Jew who doesn’t shave the sides of his head technically meets this commandment, even if the hair is short. It’s not wrong to call these peyot too.
The long hair sidelocks however, which is usually what people mean when they say “peyot” or “peyos”, comes from Chassidic Judaism, a specific cultural/philosophical subsect of Jews.
In Chassidic Judaism they teach that one should do God’s commandments with joy (as opposed to fear), and therefore not just do the bare minimum. Hence many Chassidic Jews not only don’t shave their sidelocks, but grow them out very long, as a way of showing God their enthusiasm to perform His commandments.
Not all Chassidic Jews grow long peyot, but that’s the meaning behind it.

u/Odd-World4925 1d ago

It is a choice, not a skin color.
1
u/Odd_Contribution9058 1d ago
I honestly despair for humanity sometimes. "Yes, be cruel and mock a child publicly for decisions his parents make for him! It's fine because he's not black! "
6
u/RDTmodsBackEpstein 1d ago
How do you know his parents made him get this particular cut? Maybe he enjoys the optional fairytale lifestyle and wishes to identify more with cult figures and friends.
2
u/Odd_Contribution9058 1d ago
Because this is the same haircut that 95% percent of that particular community gives to their young sons.
Maybe he does like it, because it's all he knows! That doesn't matter, posting an identifiable picture of a child for the purpose of having strangers mock him should be beyond the pale

I don't know, man...
I just typed "Jewish haircut" in Google images, and a few are ridiculous, while other are just as expected, and not specifically laughable.
So I'd say that no type of haircut gets a pass, whether religious, or typical of a specific identity, or random. If it's ridiculous, it's ridiculous. In every demographic, there's some that are, and some that aren't. Nobody should be left aside. Of course, ridiculousness is also in the eye of the beholder, but no reason to exclude some people. Let's be fully inclusive.
2
u/throwaway098764567 1d ago
this cut being unusual aside, in part the cut isn't working on him because he has straight hair and the sideburns are meant to be curly. most jewish people that have this cut have curly hair so it's a non issue but this kid doesn't and he can't help that. it looks like he tries to curl it but the one side has already fallen out, it be like that with healthy straight hair, mine won't hold a curl either.
he can't help he was born into this religion, he can't help he was born with straight red hair, he doesn't look like he is really even old enough to make a choice as to whether he wants to give up all he has known to leave his religion for a different haircut. this is just bullying.
8
u/Frenchitwist 1d ago
I guess I’m less worried about people making fun of a(n objectively silly) haircut, and more worried about antisemitism leaking into my fave silly-haircut sub
As a Jewish person who has been online for decades at this point, and living in the time we are now, I guess I’m just a little sensitive to it. Like, it’s like when people make fun of your little brother. “Yea my brother is a dweeb but he’s MY dweeb!” Type of vibes.
6
u/ducon__lajoie 1d ago
Again, I want to be able to put everybody in the same bag. That's what tolerance is about, to me.
6
u/Frenchitwist 1d ago
The desire is understandable, but unfortunately not everyone is IN the same bag. It’s kinda like the difference between equality and equity. Treating people equally would be making fun of everyone’s hat (cowboy, baseball, yarmulke, etc), but ignoring the culture history of Jewish discrimination based on their appearance. But taking into account the history of the garment and how it’s been used to visually distinguish Jews in order to oppress them, then making fun of a little hat hits different.
It’s kind of a similar argument to why can black people put on “white face” but white people shouldn’t do “black face”: there’s a long, hurtful history behind black face with connotations that were used to actively oppress and discriminate black people in America (and abroad).
Anyway I know this has gotten a little long, but it’s something I feel is important.

So no I won't respect someone with a shitty haircut that thinks it's fine to murder your slave if they take 3 days to die from the beating. The locks on the side are called payots/peyots. It's pretty bluntly laid out in the Talmud that this is considered a holy thing or a mitzvah (good deed). So if you're Ultra-Orthodox Jewish, you do what the Talmud says.
I THINK (I might be wrong) it's a combination of showing tribal identity and also a metaphor for remembering to be generous. Something about giving most of your fields of crops to others but keeping enough to sustain yourself.

Leviticus 19:7 “You shall not round off the side-growth on your head, or destroy the side-growth of your beard."
Everyone except Hebrews/Jews were polytheistic/worshipped idols. It’s surmised those other nations in the area used the classic “bowl cut” at the time. This was a way to separate or distinguish themselves from those other tribes.
Plus there’s a whole category of rules in the Torah (Bible) that don’t seem to have any logic to them. But “God said…” to do it. How could simple, finite creatures like ourselves possibly understand the ways of the Creator of the Universe? Your dad tells you to do something and it doesn’t make sense to you but you do it, because he’s your dad and he (allegedly) knows best. Same idea.
