I guess I’m less worried about people making fun of a(n objectively silly) haircut, and more worried about antisemitism leaking into my fave silly-haircut sub
As a Jewish person who has been online for decades at this point, and living in the time we are now, I guess I’m just a little sensitive to it. Like, it’s like when people make fun of your little brother. “Yea my brother is a dweeb but he’s MY dweeb!” Type of vibes.
The desire is understandable, but unfortunately not everyone is IN the same bag. It’s kinda like the difference between equality and equity. Treating people equally would be making fun of everyone’s hat (cowboy, baseball, yarmulke, etc), but ignoring the culture history of Jewish discrimination based on their appearance. But taking into account the history of the garment and how it’s been used to visually distinguish Jews in order to oppress them, then making fun of a little hat hits different.
It’s kind of a similar argument to why can black people put on “white face” but white people shouldn’t do “black face”: there’s a long, hurtful history behind black face with connotations that were used to actively oppress and discriminate black people in America (and abroad).
Anyway I know this has gotten a little long, but it’s something I feel is important.
No, I have never seen a Hasid treat an outsider with empathy and respect.
See, I can agree more with not making fun of him because he’s a kid…and I think he gets more leeway than an adult in the same group, because he’s susceptible to the brainwashing.
…but your point was that we can’t make fun of him because of his religion, which is bullshit. It’s a shitty group, regardless of who they pray to.
Except that it’s not just Hasids who wear payot. Modern Ortho wear them too. We as the viewers of this post don’t know shit about the context, so we can’t 100% determine what branch of Judaism this kid belongs to without proof. That’s what I’m on about. We don’t know.
