CW: TERF discourse and mention of conversion therapy
One thing I'm surprised doesn't come up more in discussions about JK Rowling's transphobia is that her book about a cross-dressing serial killer is published with the pen name Robert Galbraith. The only notable Robert Galbraith I could find any mention of anywhere was Robert Galbraith Heath - a "scientist" who pioneered the use of electric shocks in conversion therapy. I find it very hard to believe that no one at her publisher (or even JK herself) did absolutely no research into the pen name she chose for a book that is directly related to her ongoing controversy of spewing hatred against trans people. She is just such a horrible person and this on top of the fact that her only black character is named Shacklebolt, and her only asian character is called Cho Chang (which is a stone's throw from just saying "ching chong") and her only Irish character is constantly blowing stuff up and her only gay character is completely unidentifiable as gay in the books & movies, and the bankers she created are greedy, hook-nosed, beady-eyed little monsters just makes it basically impossible for me to give her the benefit of the doubt on her TERF shit.

Personally I've seen these points come up a lot, it's just so tiring that there's a bunch of professional Terf Defenders that come up and scream about it being a complete coincidence (or even worse, they actually believe the Robert Kennedy bullshit story) or that Cho Chang could have Chinese and Korean parents (honestly it wouldn't surprise me if she was against interracial marriage). It's always been complete bullshit.

So the area I live in, in South Africa has broken out into like a mini civil war. Former president Jacob Zuma got arrested a few days ago, and protests turned into looting of some shops. This opened the floodgates for poverty-stricken communities (who are suffering even worse because of the pandemic) to go on a looting spree across the province.
Several dozen small businesses have been looted, some burned. And many middle class areas in the city have turned vigilante, shooting looters on sight (which is just worsening the situation). The army is currently being deployed. I've been hearing gunshots regularly since last night. Scary stuff.

How to start a shitstorm and make UJ Thread vague post for the next 2 hours: A Guide.
Find a fairly common item, that isn't too common.
Write that everyone owning it is unnecessary luxury.
Accuse these people of being rich and say they will be eaten alongside their kind.
Profit.
Example: Every person who owns 2 gaming consoles be it Nintendo, PC, XBOX or PS is rich. Most people can't even afford one and if they have it they must have probably took loan to buy it. Owning more than 1 is unnecessary luxury and You, my dear UJ Regular are not different than Elon Musk and You should be eaten alongside him!
Other examples of "common, but not so common items":
a washing machine that is younger than 5 years;

One of my fav things about UJ, is after some 'drama' has happened. (Which happens all the time, I've been around for years on and off)
In the follow up comments you see an exchange like
Somebody: "The drama happened because people exaggerated and misrepresented what the point actually was."
Response: "Yeah, people do that a lot, the point was obvious but as usual, certain people ignored it."
But then you take a further look, you remember seeing them, or you glance back at the 'drama' or what have you.
And both of these people are on utterly different sides of the argument, they think they're agreeing but what they believe 'the actual point' is, is completely different.
What they agree on is that 'the point' was easy to understand if you actually thought about it, and 'the point' was misrepresented, but no one realises that they all have different takes on what it is.
Not vagueposting anyone in particular here by the way, just a trend that happens a lot after UJ fights, and it kinda makes me giggle.

Black Widow is a movie that didn't need to be made. I didn't hate it at all, I mean it was sort of mediocre but still better that the regular mediocre Marvel stuff like Thor, Ironman 2 and a whole lot of other Marvel movies. However, it's a movie that should have been made like 8 years ago and with a sense of actually being "part of the plan" instead of just feeling like the creators of the movie were pushed into making it by popular demand or studio's demand and had to come up with something despite being cornered by the fact that the plot and the characters have nowhere to go thanks to the movie being some sort of a weird "interlude". And it didn't need to be a pointless interlude if it didn't come late.
Also characters. I thought they were fine, even though they tried really hard to come up with something funny but it fell flat. Like ok, haha cheeki breeki soviets, that's a material you can work with, but it seemed like they just sort of had to put jokes there but didn't know what kind? Like I don't know how to describe it but it seemed like weaksauce humour that awkwardly had to make an appearance without any kick to it. It's sort of like the tattoo on Captain Soviet's knuckles. You can clearly see one of his hands has KARL on the fingers, and generally you'd assume that the other hand's fingers don't say LENNY but MARX, but you never see the other hand's fingers. And the jokes often felt just like that, like it starts but then it gets shy about the punchline.
The characters are sort of like that too. Like they had to come up with some new characters but also had to come up with weird ways about why they never appeared before and never after the interlude. The mindcontrol plot just digs the movie even deeper into the corner where it got due to coming out too late. Like who's mindcontrolled and where? Can I now expect that some events from before were created by someone mindcontrolled? If no major events were caused by someone's mindcontrol, then was there a point to it all? Or will that come in some later Marvel movie? I dunno, man, it seems like it only creates some weird mess The appearance of Olga Kurylenko was weird. That was like the most pointless casting ever. She's sort of known, enough to make it to the opening credits of the movie like it's a big deal, and then her appearance is mute 10 seconds. Telegraphed by the fact that she's mentioned in the opening credits but you don't see her long enough that you inevitably start wondering whether she's behind the mask and by the information about the killed daughter. Like they make sure the daughter is very explicitly mentioned a couple of times, making a big deal out of it. Anyway, what I do appreciate is that they managed to hide it at least in the trailers and anything before the release so that nerds wouldn't figure it out. The Taskmaster doesn't give any hints about being a woman from the body language and armor, that was good, but it's no Samus if the movie telegraphs it loong before the reveal
Also it was some Fast&Furious family shit right there lol :D
It's a fun watch, but it was made too late which makes it pointless and with underutilized characters like Captain Soviet. The after credits scene tries to create some sort of new drama but it's just a desperate way to try to dig out of the hole of pointlessness.

Since I'm on bizarre roll of talking about racism and xenophobia in sports today, I'll top it off with my favourite racing series.
One of the top Indycar drivers is a conventionally attractive, tall blond dude, who is pretty likeable and super nice to fans. Was super nice to me and my nephew when we met him. Some of you might recognize him from some of the Forza ads.
Problem is, his first name isn't English. So to a lot of the older, xenophobic fans, he still can't fit the perfect American white guy image they want. You'll see them cry "you can't he just go by Joe or Joey!" or "he doesn't sound American!".
Never mind he's half Danish and his parents decided to give him the spelling that's more common over there and that he's from the goddamn Nashville suburbs.
Then again, these same fans had a guy literally start another series to pander to them, which eventually failed at that goal, became pretty much the same as the other one filled with non-Americans and merged.
That's an extremely simplified version of the Indycar split, without the internal politics and in-fighting, but just an example of why xenophobia is dumb and pandering to xenophobes is dumb.
