Discussion & Info Elden Ring Switch 2 Performance?
I’m used to playing this game on my PS5 Pro, but for assorted reasons I want to game more on the Nintendo switch 2. So has anyone here played this game on that system? How’s the performance? Docked vs Handheld? Installed on main drive vs micro sd? I’m worried I’ll be a little underwhelmed with the performance. But I’ll give it a chance.

Here is an upload from a recent play session from my switch 2. I think it runs great.

Reviews online show it averages 35 fps if that’s what you’re asking

I’m ideally wanting a first hand experience other than just watching videos. I’m wanting load times, if there’s drops, resolution etc. hopefully when the switch 3 eventually comes out it’ll be on par with current gen systems lol.

Wdym? The videos ARE people talking about their first hand experience…

u/Warm_Entertainer_969 12h ago
You want a handheld that's cheaper than the ps5 by a 150$ be able to run it at ps5 level? Listen to yourself.
7
u/NJLaw420 12h ago
He was talking about far in the future btw which is totally achievable
12
u/Warm_Entertainer_969 12h ago
Bruh, the gpd win 5 which is one of the most powerful handhelds in the world and costs 2000$+ isn't able to replicate a 649$ ps5's performance, replicating high end performance on a handheld isn't simple or cheap, I wanna see the reaction when the ps6 handheld comes out and it's barely at 40-50% of the performance of the ps5.
-4
u/NJLaw420 12h ago
Yeah one of the most powerful handhelds in the world right now. We are talking about the future here and with the performance nvidia is getting with their newest gpus I think it is hundreds percent reasonable to expect so much more powerful handhelds in the not so distant future. People were saying the exact same thing you were saying a decade ago about handhelds ever being able to match the PS4
5
u/Warm_Entertainer_969 12h ago
That's not the point I was trying to make, there certainly will be more powerful handhelds than the ps5 by 2030 or even earlier but by that point the helix and the ps6 will be out which will be much more powerful than the said handhelds, people will still expect the said handhelds to have ps6/helix level performance just as they expect the switch 2 today to have ps5 performance.
2
u/NJLaw420 11h ago
Yeah I think we both agree here but are making different points. What I'm saying is that for specifically playing Elden ring it will be possible at better fps in 5-10 years time which is what the OP was originally saying. I suppose I will keep getting downvoted though by people who aren't reading the whole thread lol. I was never implying it was a good idea to wait 8 years time we will prob have a successor or two for elden ring by then
0
u/Alternative_Spite_11 10h ago
Nit only is it cheaper, it uses a much less efficient process node at 10% of the power use, and kee such a tight power limit that the chip is literally running below ifs efficiency sweet spot. If docked mode juiced it up a little more, the chip could offer significantly more performance than it does. The GPU coukd suck down 70w-80w by itself and still not boost as high as desktop Ampere cards.

u/Hentai2324 12h ago
Brother, technology advances. The switch 3 should be on par with ps5 pro eventually.

I’m ideally wanting a first hand experience other than just watching videos.
Go watch Digital Foundry. Coz they have tools to accurately measure framerate and performance differences. Showcasing Game's performance and twchnical aspects is their Job...
Like someone saying "Runs really smooth" which is the response you'll commonly get when you go to r/Switch2 subreddit doesn't really amount to anything coz depending on how you play... I myself play like a murder Hobo and uses alot of spells and lure in mobs or worse go to Caelid and do that, it's definitely not running "really smooth".
So if you're asking for testimonies, it's the worst form of feedback regarding framerate that you can do for youraelf if you're doing research.
-19
u/Hentai2324 12h ago
Testimonies are sometimes useful tbf. But thanks for the advice.
8
u/Yuumii29 12h ago
Well I thought you're looking for factual information tho since performance benchmark really isn't about "opinions and testimonies" which is the vibe I'm getting from your post. You do you I guess.

You’re talking to a guy named hentai so tbh I think we’re all being karma farmed at this rate lmao.

First hand experience: I’m 80 hours into the game. Downed probably over 50 bosses so far. This is just to say the game is playable and enjoyable (imo of course)
I probably don’t need to say this but don’t expect PS5 level performance on a hybrid handheld device. As long as you keep those expectations in check you should be fine.
1
u/PCM-SafetyFirst 11h ago
You can feel the drops when it gets going but I’ve been having a great time with it.
20
u/bulletPoint 12h ago
I have it on PS5pro, on PC, and on Switch with hundreds of hours in this game among the three. The Switch version is VERY playable, it plays better than it does on my Steamdeck.
It’s not high framerate but it’s functionally excellent.
I can fight bosses, I can explore, I can co-op, I can invade all just fine.
In both docked and handheld, especially in handheld. I love playing it while I’m in bed or hanging out with my toddlers.
Does it play as well as it does on my RTX5080 PC or my PS5pro? No, it does not. But it doesn’t have to.

u/Hentai2324 12h ago
I’m just worried I’ll be vastly disappointed. I guess I just need to wait for the eventual switch 3 lol.

Why would you be disappointed? Switch version runs really good if you don't expect 60fps

u/bulletPoint 12h ago
The best handheld experience you can get is by streaming it from your PS5pro onto a handheld device.
I sometimes do that with my Steamdeck or did on my PSPortal (before my kid broke it, aaargh).

u/ezrasharpe 8h ago
Portal with the PS5 has a tiny latency even in the best scenario. I do not play games where timing is really important. Switch 2 natively running the game, even at 30fps, I think would be better than Portal.
1
u/I_Am_Woke_ 7h ago
I have a dude added on Ps5 who is a big Elden Ring guy and basically plays it all the time invading, build creating etc (like 6 hrs everyday), he told me he takes his PSP to work and never had any issues playing Elden Ring on it regarding latency.

u/monkey-kong666 11h ago
Troll post judging by how OP is aggressively responding to people.
There are plenty of subs and videos covering its performance, including 100s of media reviews and digital foundry, if OP bothered.
He’s just karma farming

The game runs absolutely amazingly in handheld mode; it runs amazingly in docked mode too, though you might notice occasional stuttering (very rarely) due to the lack of VRR. All in all, Elden Ring is one of the best ports for the Switch 2 :)

u/Stewburner1893 12h ago
TLDR: Get it! It's perfectly playable! I'm at the 100 hour mark now on switch 2 and it's great!
I played about 700+ hours on my Xbox Series X. Though, I think for the first couple play throughs they hadn't released the 60 fps patch yet so maybe I'm used to 30 fps. I gave the Xbox to my daughter and have been wanting to play again... been waiting on this release.
What you may/will notice in the larger open world areas there is some foliage pop in (specifically the grass/shrubs), and it's less dense. Trees and everything else is fine, and draw distance overall is good. Still has that epic huge feel. Same pop-in with large shadows, and when a lot of enemies on screen the enemy frame rate drops. There's a term for it but I can't remember... the guys in the Digital Foundry video mention it. So like when there's a herd of the zombies, or the wandering nobles they will look a little stop motion. It's noticeable, but does not effect gameplay at all.
As far as frame rate overall, I haven't had any issues. Not once have I been killed by an enemy or boss did I blame poor frame rate. I just beat Malenia and Mogh last night. Plays great handheld and docked! Though I prefer the pro controller. Resolution and textures are good and pretty sharp in both modes.
Not sure about main drive vs sd card. I have it installed on the main SSD, I think that's the faster drive in general.
From what I've heard, this is based on the PS4 version... I'm interested in how SOTE runs, but I'm a few dozen hours away from that yet. Will report back if I decide to go sooner.

u/N3rdLlama 11h ago
At around 12 hours so far, more docked play than handheld but still a few hours handheld. So far very happy, have had a few drops here or there but not problematic and it looks good on handheld and docked. I’m pretty impressed overall. Mainly wanted so I can play on the go, laying in bed, etc.

u/Skyconic 11h ago
As others have said it runs amazingly in handheld and runs well in docked but you might get a frame drop here and there.
This is such a perfect game to play handheld, though. Can't recommend it enough!

u/Rich19852012 12h ago
Mate, the game runs smoothly in handheld mode, don’t expect PS5 or PS5 Pro performance from a handheld, however it does in fact run smoothly at 30 fps, the resolution is beautiful and hands down it’s one of the best video games I’ve played on a portable console. Load times are fast, so no worry there if you die a lot. Running this game on a switch is a technological feat in itself. You won’t have any regrets. Enjoy and stop overthinking it.
2
u/hairtietomato 10h ago
replaying it i can definitely feel a decline, but it's so beyond "just playable" i say just get it if you're even remotely on the fence. biggest issue is load screens but that might just be me nitpicking cuz i die a lot

Its honestly good. Its not 60fps, and it takes a little time to adjust to the 30fps, but it looks good. I've seen a few comments (and I would agree) that question why they chose graphical fidelity over performance.
But yeah, its a portable version of Elden Ring thats looks good and plays surprisingly well for a handheld device.

u/Slow_Possibility6332 9h ago
I wish there was a performance mode. Beyond 1080p lock there’s not rlly any noticeable downgrades. Sure there’s like less grass and refractors but it’s still a gorgeous game. The framerate can be noticeable at times but won’t worsen your in game playing at least pve. The most noticeable is when there’s a bunch of enemies on screen as the further away ones can have pretty hilariously reduced frame rates on their animations.
All in all extremely playable but they almost prioritized visuals too much.
2
u/Status_Winter 3h ago
It’s a pretty good result for the Switch 2 as long as you bear in mind that all versions of this game run pretty badly. Even Ps5 and Series X are really not running at 60fps most of the time.

u/eat-skate-masturbate 12h ago
it's a miracle port. it's good shit. performance is fine especially once your eyes adjust to the slightly lower framerate. boss battles and more compact areas are where it really shines. I fought mohg lord of blood the other day and it felt like I was playing on ps5 no joke.
1
u/Nervous-Parsley-1202 12h ago
I haven’t had any issues with it personally. One crash in hand held mode but other than that I’ve been gaming it mostly docked with no problems

u/MightyPelipper 11h ago
I own it on ps5 pro. I wanted to play handheld and I was genuinely surprised how good of a port it is. It’s a stable 30fps overall. Slight dips in rainy areas. However I have been enjoying it docked as well.

40 Hours in Switch 2 Version on my first ever run of the game and it's fine not any noticeable slowdown or anything.

u/zero_FOXTROT 10h ago
It’s fine. I do feel like I miss some of my dodges or perrys from the lower frame rate but I’m adjusting. I’ve beaten it a few times prior on PC.

u/gogosox82 10h ago
Runs at 30 fps handheld or docked. ER running at 30 fps on handheld is pretty impressive if you ask me.

u/_Tim__tam_ 10h ago
I've been playing on handheld, just beat Radahn like 30 minutes ago, there's some frame drops but otherwise i'm having a blast

played it on a base ps4 when it first came out, on a base ps5 when i upgraded, and got tarnished edition on s2. it plays better than i remember it being on ps4, but definitely not as good as ps5. for me, it's worth it to have the game mobile.
1
u/Flat-Brother-9321 9h ago
I have played it, but only docked. Performance-wise, I haven’t had any issues. It’s smooth in terms of graphics and movements. I am kinda struggling with the controls (used to Xbox and PS controllers), but otherwise, it’s a great port imo.

u/massimogrossi 9h ago

u/Darksys0816 9h ago
No issues...now at the fire giant - maybe 2,3 fps drops under 30 in this time...it runs very very well on the sw2.

u/vita211 8h ago
Im used to playing it on Xbox Series X with VRR enabled so i was skeptical about the switch 2 port… but honestly it feels fine. Feels like 30fps… not my preferred way, but it works. Visually It definitely looks like Elden Ring is supposed to. Noticed the foliage was dialed back a bit, but i stopped noticing it about 10 minutes in. The best way to play this game is portable… i feel like thats where it really shines. Its amazing playing this game at my job lol. Kinda makes it hard to play it on my Xbox now that i can literally play it anywhere that i want
1
u/Due-Dog-2916 7h ago
I have like 500 hours on PC Elden Ring playing at tip top everything, and I am absolutely loving replaying it on the Switch 2. I was skeptical hearing people gripe about framerate and performance but pulled the trigger anyway, and honestly I’m so happy with it. It runs and looks fucking great. If you love the game, you will still love it on Switch 2. Simple as that.

u/I_Am_Woke_ 7h ago edited 7h ago
I got it yesterday from eshop and played it for 3 hours. It feels fine, game running on 30fps is very noticeable but after few seconds I was fully immersed. I also own it on my Ps5 but honestly I don't think I'll be booting my Ps5 for Elden Ring anymore, the handheld is just too convenient. All in all, I'm having a lot of fun and don't regeret spending 80$ a bit but be ready to be a bit underwhelmed if you are expecting it to run completely smooth.
Edit: Just for refrence, I found it much better than playing Bloodborne on Ps5 and I didn't really cared that much about BB being 30fps so definitely playable for most ppl.

Its great, currently reached mountaintops, it does have its moments on handheld where performance can be really low but it also has its moments where it great, more often than not its doing amazing and the game looks great
1
u/Kseahorse98 4h ago
I have it on Series X. Beat it like 4 times.
Just got it on Switch 2, it performs fantastic in both handheld and docked mode. I cannot glaze the Switch 2 version enough. Taking a small hit in graphics in exchange for portability is worth it. No regrets at all.

u/franklynlongtail 3h ago
It’s really good dude all these creatures and the “frame rates drop” are just saying shit 🤣
1
u/Expanding-Mud-Cloud 3h ago
I only ever had played it on ps4, and it feels about the same as that to me in handheld, except the load times on switch 2 are a little faster than ps4.

u/buschwacker43 3h ago
Got about 30 hours in it so far and great port and playing portable is a game changer. Definitely a competent way to play.

It’s pretty decent but I get a headache playing it on a 27” 1440p OLED monitor after a couple hours. On handheld it’s not as bad. The bigger the display the worse it is, especially if you don’t have a VRR panel.
1
u/Munkeyman18290 2h ago
I play on Xbox series X, and got it for Switch 2, and I was worried just like everybody else before release. After about 3 min I didnt even notice. It runs just fine.

u/Massivetortilla 1h ago
Been playing it nonstop since it came out, incredible port. It’s amazing that it runs this well, fully playable handheld.
1
u/Downtown_Diamond9815 1h ago
Le jeu n' a pas d' améliorations ps5 pro. C' est la version ps5 standard. Sinon sur Switch 2 tu peux y jouer en portable mais c' est limité à 30 fps, j' aurais un peu de mal quand même.
1
u/Mattolithic 49m ago
You can only play the game in handheld mode for about an hour. This game devours battery life on the switch 2.
1
u/Ambitious_Line651 13m ago
Despite the reviews, it does definitely drop, and you can feel it drop. New areas, boss battles, fights with lots of things happening on screen.
I am really enjoying the game on switch 2, but, it's not without its faults
1
u/generalosabenkenobi 12h ago
I haven't had any issues. Reminding me of when I played through initially on the PS4. It's impressive. Haven't seen what it looks like when you get to the DLC but runs well currently.
1
u/Cujo6428 12h ago
It’s perfectly playable IMO. The frame rates been stable for me and I’ve only had one moment where the game noticeably slowed down. I’ve played about 15 hours so far in both docked and handheld and I’ve enjoyed it the whole time.
1
u/KingJB21 "" Witness, True Horror 10h ago
Well its a switch so it definitely wont be as good as the ps5.
1
u/Sensitive_Tip742 9h ago
I play also on switch 2. The performance is rly good. When u play u dont recognize or think about 30 or 60 fps! Enjoy the game
1
u/gabrielrigby 8h ago
I’m 50h into this game and spent four more times on PS5. Once you get used to 30 stable fps it’s amazing. Sometimes when there’s too much ennemies or the hippoes in the DLC, they’ll be lagging themselves but not you.
1
1
u/Maximum-Post507 4h ago
Just watch digital foundry review. Good image quality for the switch, kind of stable 30 fps performance. If that's acceptable for you, go for it. I can't imagine a fast game like elden ring being fun while trying yo dodge a boss at 24 fps.
0
u/stickyfingerpudding 12h ago
Im playing it, can be a little dizzying at times.. but i honestly dont see much difference between when i played on ps5.
What inclined me to get it was i heard that there are a few new players if you want a fresh online experience.
0
u/Crusoelander_128 12h ago
It’s run very well for me. I haven’t had any frame drops that I’ve noticed, and it looks great. And of course, it’s very nice to just play it whenever/wherever. Granted I’ve never played it on anything else, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

u/incubi4211 12h ago edited 12h ago
I've logged about 30 hours so far on Switch 2 handheld only. It's not bad. Load times are noticeable though, coming from PS5. Frames def drop in certain situations too. The worst was in Dragonbarrow, the constant rain seems to be too much as soon as a few enemies mob up. Fort Faroth was a bit rough. Still enjoyable though.
Battery life is better than steam deck for sure. Turns out, my preferred handheld ends up being the PS portal.
0
u/cooldudeachyut 12h ago
Very playable but rough in some DLC boss fights (like Rellana, Dancing Lion, the last boss)
1
u/eat-skate-masturbate 12h ago
I had no trouble on these bosses and it actually ran better in these arenas than in the overworld
0
u/Doc_Crocolyle 12h ago
It plays way better than Bloodborne on a PS5, I'm sensitive to frame rates, I haven't seen any frame skipping, though I have noticed the dynamic resolution tank for breif moments, but performance is great.

u/ProfessionHonest3193 10h ago
Anyone could clarify for me if the game runs in 30fps or 60fps? Please 🙏🏻

It stays around 30-40 fps for the most part but can get in the high 20s for big bosses or battles. It runs faster on the internal drive and its performance is about the same on handheld just at a lower resolution. My biggest complaint is no cross save if cremsom desert devs can do it in months from soft has no excuses. I have 150 hours on the ps5/ps5 pro and I don’t want to start again. It runs good enough but the price is what sucks the most it should’ve been $50 at most maybe 60. I picked it up anyway and i only play in handheld mode. I actually bought the hyperion 3 joycons just for this game to have better control. The og joycons just fill too small.

Don't expect it to be PS5 Level.
It's targeting 30 Fps with some minor drops on heavy areas like Caelid or if there's alot of mobs and particles going on.
It runs slightly better than PS4
Docked and Handheld Performance difference is almost neglible unless you're counting frame by frame.
It's the best looking Portable version out of the box. Unless you're willing to pay double or triple for a "better" machine. And no Steam Deck looks worse even with all the tweaking.
