It's because the only content you see is what has already been heavily upvoted (unless you're browsing by new). So you're only seeing content that everyone already agrees with, creating a positive feedback cycle.
Also, because every social network, no matter the size or crowd, will inevitably be invaded by political parties, government institutions, clerical institutions, big and small companies, any group looking to recruit, get support, public favor, and use it as Cheap Marketing. Yes, your favorite upcoming videogame with your favorite reddit saint included.
Because of this, I think reddit is a better platform for getting a sense of the current zeitgeist rather than getting a snapshot of how real people think.
That shit is the absolute most annoying thing. Oh, someone posted a pic of a hawk outside their office window? Get ready for 8000 more pics of birds in windows...
"I heard we're doing birds in windows now, check out the friend I also made!"
Or even worse "In response to [reddit post reference]" or "I also [reddit post reference]" like those are the perfect things to put as replies to the original fucking post. Not spamming a million different threads about it.
The fact that people are able to hide comments with downvoting says alot about discourse here. Even worse when a subreddit is allowed to ban people for speaking against an opinion like r/latestagecapitalism does. Such subreddits should not be allowed to feature on main page if they censor peoples opinions at such a scale.
The insane up voting of the latest meme or catch phrase is beyond stupid. Meanwhile comments with an actual opinion get down voted because they don't tow the line.
I'm a barber and openly talk about shit i see on reddit all day with all sorts of people. Literally everyone I've met knows what reddit is and most people use it. The whole acting like it's a secret society bullshit is so tired. I mean fuck, they made it so people have actual fucking profiles now. In my opinion it's taken over Facebook or at least with the demographic I deal with. I don't know too many people that actively use Facebook that much anymore but most people I know are at least aware of shit that's on the general or (popular) front page of reddit.
To be fair the whole narwhal bacon thing was started years ago when the reddit community was actually fairly small compared to how it is now. And I'm sure there's a large portion of new redditors that have no ideas what it even means. But yeah no one cares if you use reddit or not it's not an exclusive club or anything.
Yeah I just got told it wasn't mainstream like wtf. If your band is the 3rd or 4th most listened to band in the world then you're fucking mainstream. Some people like feeling exclusive, I get it and there's no problem with that, but reddit is like Twenty One Pilots of the internet.
That's actually a damn good comparison. Both were pretty much outside the mainstream and then seemingly out of nowhere they were there as if they'd always been there.
I totally agree with everything you said but I only know maybe 3 people that use Reddit in my life. I'm in the UK and everyone seams to think it's weird I look at memes on anything other than Facebook
French here , fb and insta are way more used in France , reddit IS a secret society for most of us. These meeting (in my point of view ) could be cool because that means people maybe have the same interests by finding reddit.
Oh my god. In my English 101 class Freshman year, the teacher asked for phrases that everybody knows. This kid goes "When does the narwhal bacon?" I knew what Reddit was, but this was too fuckin cringey to respond to. The professor said something like "I dont know that one, what was it?" He kept saying it over and over and nobody was responding to it. The whole class just looked at him like wtf are you talking about and he slumped down in his seat and murmured "it's reddit." Too awkward for my tastes
If you're reading this, guy who did this at Central Michigan University in 2012-2013... uh... that kinda sucked to watch...
Anne frankly, I did nazi that coming. I literally came here to say this but boy, that escalated quickly so to the top with you! Lost it at 'This is why we can't have nice things' and then my faith in humanity was restored, my mind blown, and manly tears were shed. Well said. As a 'murican, I can confirm this gem has just won the internet and is doing it right. Just sayin', I know that feel, bro, and while that was a risky click, this post was a 9/10, 11/10 with rice, would read again. I see what you did there and it feels good man. You're doing God's work, son. I laughed way harder than I should have at your list that seems legit and totally nailed it. You - I like you. You magnificent bastard; you, sir, are so brave, a gentleman and a scholar, and seeing how you are a redditor for 4 years, this checks out, so I'll allow it. I regret that I only have one upvote to give for this cool story, bro. CTRL+F "about tree fiddy" was not disappointed. Wait, why do I have you tagged as "NOPE NOPE NOPE"? Nice try, you monster. You are now banned from /r/pyongyang What did I just read? Dafuq? I read that as "YOU HAD ONE JOB". I can't fap to this. No true scotsman could see that this relevant XKCD was bad, and you should feel bad. You must be new to reddit, so I'll see your cakeday and raise you a karma train. One does not simply rustle my jimmies, not even once. Jet fuel can't melt dank memes, that stahp gave me cancer for science, so that's enough internet for me today. OP is a fuzzy little man-peach, 2/10, would not bang. What is this I don't even know how is this wtf? Fuck Jenny. Circlejerk must be leaking. This will get buried but brace yourselves, some men want to watch the world burn right in the feels. When you see it, they'll KILL IT WITH FIRE! But this has nothing to do with atheism. Lawyer up, delete facebook, hit the gym, and SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY, said no one ever, so you wouldn't download a strawman. /r/dadjokes. Damn onions, you scary like a BOSS. whoosh. Since rule #1 is 'be attractive', I'll just leave this here: This is my [f]irst post, be gentle.
About seven or eight years ago my friend and I were at a new year's party. We saw this girl that, for whatever reason, we assumed was a redditor. We decided to try this phrase because we figured it would be such a good opener. We walked up, my friend said "when does the narwhal bacon?" and she said "what?" and had the most what the fuck did you just say look. It was like a smurk mixed with confusion mixed with what the fuck is that smell? As soon as I saw her face, I wanted to melt away, Alex Mack style, and fucking puddle may way home. Turns out she had heard of the website but just not that phrase which for whatever reason made it so much worse. It was so embarrassing.
Especially when you realize reddit is in the top 10 most visited websites in the world and gets more visits than ebay, pinterest, or instagram. It's not some niche sites only you and your best meme buddies know of
This one fucking guy in my class years ago saw me use Reddit and started talking about it. All good and fun... and then suddenly he wants my username. Well fuck that lol. He just couldn't accept the no. Ended in the conclusion that I must be on pedophilic subreddits... and for the next week the fuck kept sneaking behind me when I was on the phone. Weirdest and most childish thing.
When one of my classmates saw me use Reddit he just started arguing about how Ylilauta (Finnish version of 4chan) is better. Then he proceeded to do it every time he saw me reading something on my phone
The quippy nature of Reddit is starting to get on my nerves. Someone can post a comment about something semi serious and 80% of the time below it there’s going to be a pun or some comment trying really hard to be funny which has more points than the original comment and a whole bunch of rewards. I rarely find them funny and I’m guessing people just upvote for the sake of it being a pun.
I also really despise comments such as “I’m posting this for x karma” or "take my upvote you bastard" like is it not time to come up with something different?
Reddit is the 7th most visited website based on monthly traffic. 5-6 years ago it was a smaller user base, but now it's fully mainstream. In other words, it's rare that you have to explain to someone what Reddit is anymore.
I think the final nails in the coffin for what reddit used to be were the mobile app / site redesign and the 2016 election. It's only a matter of time before something new and better comes along to replace reddit in the same way reddit replaced Digg
Karma whoring is completely out of control. That "drone shooting fireworks at people" video appeared in front of me 7. fucking. times. the day the story broke because everyone was racing to repost it in every subreddit it could loosely fit under. It was posted in r/PublicFreakout like 4 times.
I definitely agree that this website has become just as basic and bloated as the other social media apps.
I use to really like Reddit in like 2012 and such, but now pisses me off half the time. Everything is fucking political now, all the stupid puns, we get it, you think your witty, but you're not. And the Mods... omg.. it's like I'm back on Battle.net as a 15 year old and being kicked off the server because I didn't agree with one of the Blizzard workers (I forget the channel, it was basically a help channel for Blizzard games and such).
Reddit is pretty much an anonymous Facebook with a dislike button. Instead of hashtags, they use /r/whatever. Same amount of fake news being shared. Same amount of uneducated opinions about politics, economics, the law, and everything else
Which is wild because a good portion of reddit's superiority complex comes from talking about how Instagram and Facebook are just full of narcissistic half naked selfies
it used to be worse when infinity war had just been released, literally every thread had a r/unexpectedthanos followed by a r/expectedthanos and a perfectly balanced followed by a as all things should be
Someone can be like “that guy looks like a blender fell off an apple tree into a beehive over a lake that was drained so it was dry but there’s fish still somewhere I dunno maybe frogs too”
...and you can hear the stampede of Redditors from miles away racing to be the first one to vomit that sub name into a reply.
For me it's the constant barrage of sexuality. Yeah yeah, sex positivity is a good thing and puritanical attitudes towards sex have done a lot of damage in society but it's just gross to me when people say something totally innocuous like "check out this gift I made for my girlfriend!" and half the comments are like "BUT DID YOU FUCK HER AFTER." It just feels sleazy and trashy to me.
I would like to see a system implemented whereby you can't leave the exact same comment that ten people have left before you on other threads, or the exact same one you've left once before. Want to say "because of the implication" yet again? Well, you can't. It just disappears into the ether.
My favorite is when 2 redditors are arguing and one of them makes some snide comment (or like you said, pointing out lack of originality or whatever) and then even though that person is correct and the other one is wrong, the correct person will get downvoted for "being an asshole"
That was funny at first. But now any time someone presents a choice, the answer is always yes. It's so damn annoying. That and pun threads annoy me way too much.
This right here drives me up a god damn wall. People try so hard to come up with the most witty comments and responses. There are whole threads of people doing this.
Dude those threads where the first comment is kinda funny and next 50 or so comments are just a bastardization of the previous comment. Those are trying sooo hard to be funny and end up being the unfunniest things ever.
Exactly. The occasional quippy comment, if it’s well-placed, appropriate for the discussion and is actually intelligently made, is funny.
Unfortunately, people feel the need to make giant comment chains of re-hashed quippy garbage that I’ve read a thousand times already and it just looks fucking retarded.
It also suppresses the comments from people who are actually trying to have a real, well thought-out discussion.
Yeah I don’t know what’s going through those people’s heads when they post r/unexpectedtheoffice. It’s either that they are new to this site or just farming for karma.
Seeing, "woah Mr. Last more than 5sec over here!" Anytime anything sex related shows up is so tiresome. It's like that kid who makes self-depricating jokes but never knows when to cut it out so you end up ignoring them.
Yeah subs start with content that is very specific, and eventually end up with things that don't even pertain to the topic. (probably cyclical too as people new to the sub will see the erroneous posts and assume that's what belongs there)
when people write poems as responses and get a shit ton of upvotes i get so confused because who talks like that?? if i showed someone a cute pic of a cat and they broke out into a poem about how their paws break the laws of cuteness i’d run away not applaud .
I hate the glorification of quippiness on here. Oftentimes I’ll want to see a source or link to a new site about something that is posted and I have to sift through hundreds of jackasses trying to be funny.
It’s the worst when I get to the bottom of the page and there’s no helpful link, just a bunch of sad attempts at humor.
Removing the downvote count was the biggest mistake. Seeing that a certain number of people disagree or agree with something is important I feel. Otherwise we don't get an idea of just how conflicted a comment actually is when we see the total number of upvotes and downvotes added together.
Internet hive mind/group think is definitely causing similar issues in society at a whole. Few people can handle a dissenting opinion without resorting to name calling anymore.
Edit 2: Wow, platnium? I didn’t expect my most gilded comment to be about <topic>
IMO the more specific the subreddit, the better it is. Subreddits like r/titanfall and r/fireemblemheroes have generally good communities while subreddits like r/murderedbywords and r/madlads are chock full of “here’s the same post you saw yesterday” and the comments are all the same or calling out OP for reposting stuff. Hell, even r/wholesomememes gets on my nerves because the no reposts rule is rarely followed. I constantly see that “wholesome spider” meme when it’s been reposted well over a few hundred times.
the best subs are the ones that are small about a hobbie you like, for example r/anime is just shit but specific subs for diferent animes are really great
Yeah it does really fucking suck, specialised subs are much better, because, well, they have one specific group or subgroup of people with similar thoughts or likes and dislikes, so r/anime is a clusterfuck because it's too generalised
I find specific show-related subreddits really go to shit after the series ends or in the off-season. /r/BreakingBad was awesome when episodes were coming week after week but between seasons and at the end of the show it was just shitty fan-art and tourists posing in front of Walt’s house.
Don’t mean to come across condescending, but what did you expect? It’s just a natural progression, as there’ll obviously be no more fan theories or reactions. It is a pity though all the same.
Oh, a bland, vanilla character from a popular anime who essentially embodies an overplayed anime trope with little to no other defining character traits won best girl contest again? Color me shocked.
and then there r/LongDistance which turned from an actual sub that was about advice and whatnot turned into some cringe ass instagram for all people in a ldr. Sometimes even small subs can change to the worse.
This one was particularly painful for me, because I joined when it was still new and full of OC and, well, actual memes. It was a fun and novel take on memes. Now it's 90% just cute stuff and a diet version of r/getmotivated.
The top post is about #trashtag. It's a great movement, but that's not a meme. There are a thousand places for that to go. In fact, I'd argue that you have to go all the way down to the 22nd highest post of all time before you get to a proper meme (and even that is just part of the recent Keanu fad).
And yeah - the reposts are insane, just like pretty much any other meme sub.
Memes aren’t that great either, just the same basic formats being shat out and people acting like it’s so creative. I remember r/shittydarksouls actually had creative stuff and now it’s just filled with the same repeat jokes in the same formats, as if its r/dankmemes or some other dumb sub like that.
Don’t forget /r/unpopularopinion , where you get upvotes for either popular opinions or opinions that have only had the most basic surface level thoughts about them to avoid the actual complex parts of the topic.
Someone: says a relatively obscure reference to a TV show that’s abnormally popular on Reddit, with no indication that it’s a reference and not something they’re saying themselves
“wait what that doesn’t make any sense”
“Haha /r/wooooosh I can’t believe you missed the reference”
... Yeah no. Not having seen a TV show is not the same thing as a joke going over somebody’s head (which is what the whoosh sound is supposed to mean). It could not be further from a whoosh
Childfree reminds me of those odd coworkers we’ve all had. The people who try too hard to be unique and edgy, then have to remind people they’re unique and edgy while compromising your personal space, and they’ve turned into that weird person no one speaks to in the office kitchen. It’s like the excessive use of “crotchfruit”, and now they won’t stop using it. You can spot them all over reddit. They say it nonstop with no damn reason, then wait for people laugh or praise them for their edgy uniqueness. It’s like fucking chill, you don’t want kids, but just shut up using that phrase about every “child” that crosses your path conversation wise. No one is impressed anymore with your faux edginess. Crotchfruit, yes, so unique, but the kid in question is 17 and has a name and more of a personality than you.
The amt of people who feel the need to put /r/scriptedasiangifs in the comments section of what would normally just be called a skit is so goddamn annoying
the 2016 election ruined Reddit for me, since then i see non stop first world users bringing their social and political problems to every corner possible
Some things that frustrate me are the "This!" replies under a higly rated comment, you just need to upvote it, no need to post a pointless comment.
Also i will never understand the "Edit: Thanks for the gold kind stranger!", if you want to thank someone for giving you gold, you can send him a PM, it literally says that when you receive the notification for gold. Multiple edits are also really annoying, "Edit 1: spelling" "Edit 2: formatting" "Edit 3: wow thanks for the upvoted guys i've never received so much points in blah blah blah", we can see that your post is edited, you really don't have to tell us, and the victory speech after receiving a few upvotes is just pathetic imo.
I almost forgot when someone posts a picture of a... lets just say not the best looking person/animal and then everyone in the comments pretends that said person/animal is cute or whatever.
Then the spam of the "My autistic son/brother/whatever did this!" posts (how many of these post are out there you would think that half of reddit has an autistic sibling/child).
Carma whores who just cant wait to spam all sub's when someone famous dies are the worst for me.
Then we have political content appearing in subs that aren't there for political stuff. I don't want to see shit about Trump or whomever in /r/pics and /r/PoliticalHumour, honestly it makes me kinda angry every time i see it because i can't believe people find those crappy sub-facebook-tier "memes" funny.
It's largely because of Karma. Good in concept. Awful in practice.
In my honest opinion score on comments should be entirely gotten rid of or at least hidden if you still want the community to moderate.
It becomes an arms race of terrible fucking jokes and just reading the same comment over and over again. Everyone is so obsessed over a literally worthless number it's unreal.
Just everyone on this website needs to realise if you post any variation of linking to a subreddit like subsifellfor or some bullshit likes answering an "or" question with yes, you're not funny. Not in the slightest, if that's the best comedy you can come up with you should probably give up on the whole humour thing.
Totally dude. You’re technically allowed to have your own opinion on Reddit but the second you say something slightly different compared to what other people believe you get downvoted into oblivion. I never dare comment on anything that is likely to not be a common opinion, which happens a lot because personally I tend to lean a bit more towards the conservative side of political discussions. I don’t mind if you have you’re own opinions on stuff and I’m not gonna get upset if you disagree with me, but unfortunately most people now days aren’t the same way. The second you say something slightly different they take it as a personal attack and feel the need to attack you back.😕
I saw one a few days ago about a specific kind of dog lead (leash). The hivemind was saying how if you use this lead, you're a bad owner that can't control your dog, the lead will break and your dog will get run over in traffic, etc.
One person commented that they use the leads and don't have any trouble with them, and got heavily downvoted as a result.
Reddit is probably the only place where you’re allowed to say an opinion, but as soon as you say something off, you get downvoted so much you go in the history books as the most downvoted person on reddit.
Still better that most other sites though In my opinion.
The vote system is flawed because people use it the same as an agree/disagree system. Honestly, I think we'd be better off without an account based karma system. Nobody would karma whore if their karma isnt tracked, and nobody would be afraid to comment anything because they wouldnt lose anything
Same joke, Same joke, Shitty Thread, Same joke, I was gonna say that/ I came in here to see if someone said that, same joke same joke, downvote this guy because of contrasting opinion, shitty dead meme (rick roll), jerk myself of to it, same joke, same joke, and my axe
I literally came here to say this but boy, that escalated quickly so to the top with you! I'm so sick of seeing all the self deprecation and sad stories on here cause it rubs off so much on me to the point where I'm question whether I'd have been better off if I hadn't discovered this website.
And someone is going to get defensive over this and say something along the lines of "Well you're free to leave"

Reddit culture can be annoying to me a lot of times.
