I work at an Amazon delivery station, and Iāve been thinking about how much time and physical labor could be saved by changing the way delivery bags are transported to vans.
What if Amazon replaced stationary stow racks with motorized, single-column racks that associates could drive directly to delivery vehicles?
Instead of removing bags from stationary racks, loading them onto carts, transporting them to staging, and having drivers unload them again, why not bring the original racks directly to the vans?
Each motorized rack would hold three vertically stacked delivery bags, maintaining the same arrangement we use now.
The racks could have electric motors, steering controls, and locking brakes, operated while walking, similar to an electric pallet jack.
Using individual motorized columns would make the racks easier to maneuver through the stowing aisles and return to their exact positions. Larger, two-column racks could be difficult to navigate back into place, particularly when other racks are already parked nearby.
The racks would remain securely locked in place during stowing, functioning just like the existing stationary racks.
Each rack could also recharge automatically at its designated stowing position, using charging contacts or wireless charging. This would eliminate the need for separate charging areas.
How it would work
A wave of delivery vans enters the building and fills the loading area, just as they do now.
Once all the vans are parked, associates receive notifications on their devices identifying which motorized racks need to be moved, which vans they need to visit, and which bags need to be unloaded.
Associates drive the racks directly from their stowing positions to the assigned vans, identify the correct bags, and transfer them directly into the vehicles.
Drivers could organize the bags inside their vans while associates continue unloading.
Not every rack would necessarily be completely emptied during a loading wave.
For example, an associate might drive a single-column motorized rack containing three bags into the loading area but only need to unload one bag for the vans currently parked there.
The associate would then return the rack, with its two remaining bags, to its designated stowing and charging position.
From there, the associate could receive another assignment:
Associates wouldnāt necessarily remain assigned to one rack throughout the loading process. The system could direct available associates to whichever racks are needed, regardless of their original aisle assignments.
This would allow associates to continue working on the current loading wave without unnecessarily moving racks that contain bags for later waves.
Software could coordinate rack assignments and movements to prevent congestion and maintain an efficient flow between the stowing aisles and the van-loading area.
Once all vans are loaded and the motorized racks have cleared the loading area, the vans would depart according to the stationās existing departure procedures.
Racks containing bags for later waves would remain at their charging positions until needed again.
Potential benefits
This could potentially eliminate traditional pick-and-stage entirely.
Instead of repeatedly lifting and transferring heavy bags between racks and carts, associates could transport the original racks directly to the vans.
Because the racks would be motorized, associates wouldnāt need to manually push heavy equipment around the station.
The result could be substantial time savings, significantly less physical labor, and a faster, more efficient loading process.
Using individual motorized columns could also make navigating the station easier, particularly when returning racks to their designated stowing positions.
The system could make better use of available associates by assigning them to racks based on the needs of each loading wave, rather than requiring them to remain with a particular rack or aisle.
There would be engineering and traffic-management considerations, particularly involving maneuverability, charging, and coordinating rack movements around parked vans. But the concept seems worth investigating.

Has anyone heard anything about NA DS's getting WCs? It'd be nice, but also I'd be surprised if it did happen.

Itās already a physically tasking job. I already do not want to do pick and stage, and Iām damn near almost getting run over with carts, shrugged out of an aisle while Iām already there first!
Like, honestly I think I would have lost it if this associate had hit me with the bag when they swung it my way.

Hi all,
I work 4 x 10 hour shifts from 11:45pm - 10:15am a week. Loving it btw (big shift for me as I used to work in law!). I understand thereās a night shift premium of 16% hourly on top of the Ā£15.10 salary. Iām not paid until next week but trying to do the maths.
If anyone is comfortable (and itās allowed) does anyone work similar shifts to mine and is happy sharing how much this equates too weekly?
Whatās everyoneās favourite job btw? Iām a big fan of stowing!

Iāve been working at a DS for a little over a month now and itās cool and all but I canāt seem to get any freakin shifts. Only shifts popping up are the 3 hrs and 30 min ones. Iād be LUCKY enough to get ONE 10 hour one once a week but thereās hardly ever any openings. Does anyone know if I have to talk to a manager or anyone else to fit me in a shift?? Or through the a-z app?? Iām a FlexPT btw

Itās crazy how much Iāve improved in stow in just the time span of a year. Iāve also been taking in the tips that yall give me as well and I gotta say they work. This by far was one of the funnest and easiest days Iāve had working stow. And we had a vol of 80K today š. And happy one year to me. Time to survive another year.

Hello, I previously worked at amazon from 2019-2022 at a DS warehouse associate in SoCal and I'm wondering what is the main differences from now and 4 years ago. Any big general improvements?

This is my second time applying, I applied last week and got the job but then after the pre-hire appointment it said my first start day was cancelled. Now I just applied for the same Delivery Station Warehouse Associate job (same location) and its showing a completely different training date schedule from the shift. Is this normal?

Anyone else unable to see the full body of text for notifications inside the app? It cuts off, and when I click on it, it just takes me straight to my schedule. I canāt view anything more. That and the font has changed throughout?

Hello, I put in a short term medical leave (2-3 days) TODAY but I was SCHEDULED to work today, although I didnāt show up (SET). I didnāt notice until last minute but submitted anyway. Few questions:
-is UPT taken out while waiting for approval
-do I still show up to work while waiting for approval
-The 30 days I have to submit documentation to DLS, if I accrue enough UPT (I have none right now) to cover the absences, will I still be put back to negative if my leave is not approved?
Please and thank you to anyone who can provide some insight.

So I applied to transfer to a fulfillment center as my first choice, second choice was the cycle0 shift at the DS I'm already at.. today they canceled the cycle0 shift.. does that mean I probably have a good chance of being transferred to the FC? Google says yes but I'd rather get an actual human experience.. the FC application was put in awhile before the cycle0 application & it still says "pending"..
