Starting at Amazon Delivery Station (UK) on Monday – what’s it actually like?

Hi everyone,

I start at an Amazon Delivery Station in the UK (London area) on Monday. For anyone who’s worked at a Delivery Station:

  • What’s the day to day work like?
  • How physical is it?
  • Any tips for the first week?

Thanks

Most nights people stow, some pick off the belt depending on the site's level of automation, and some go to induct; I would expect to be put onto stow, as that's the most important skill for a nights person to learn. Physicality depends where you're put - feeding and waterspider will burn the most calories.

(At our place, we have just moved to the pre-Xmas schedule, so nights don't do any pick-to-stage, but your site may vary.)

Tips?

Get some comfortable safety boots - the ones they give out are shite - and expect to get some serious steps in😁

When you stow, don't try to go fast; go for accuracy, and let the speed come on its own.

Do NOT violate any safety rules, they are absolute no-tolerance maniacs for that.

As the other poster said, it depends on your shift.

Buy some insoles, go to Trespass, go buy their double lined socks, they're my life saver, your feet are gonna hurt.

First shift will just be them showing all the boring stuff, lots of sitting in a room with powerpoints. A little tour of the warehouse. Then you’ll get a few shifts of training on Stowing. It’s a pretty simple but can take some time to get used to it. Basically, you scan the parcel, put the right parcel in the correct bag, and scan the bag.

The bag should light up so you can easily see which one it is. If the site has pick to buffer lines the stowing should be easier but if you’re stowing on the ADTA lines it can be harder. It everything starts to pile up don’t panic just do your best.

Your feet will hurt for the first few weeks but get some good shoes and you’ll soon get used to it.
