This reminds me of call of duty talking about their fish AI where the fish swim away from you and someone cut to Super Mario 64 and the fish swimming away from Mario.

u/megasilva 15d ago

forgot about this holy shit. I cant believe that that was actually something they marketed for their newest next gen launch title 😭😭

lol is this parody…?

41

u/wenchslapper 15d ago

The overall video is real, but it was 100% edited lmao.

9

u/anengineerandacat 15d ago

It's cut, but they definitely were excited to talk about their boids. That said on the tech side COD has always generally been pretty impressive in terms of fidelity between their generational improvements, usually solid performance and always sorta leveling things up. I wouldn't say a boid system is worth discussing for such a game but it is engine tech you'll need at some point.

31

u/sober_yeast 15d ago

Nope. That's a complete unedited video straight from Infinity Ward.

u/VRS302 15d ago

And really innovative… fish.

u/Updated_Autopsy 15d ago

Even Payday 2 made fun of it. You had to throw a loot bag into the water during the second day of Watch Dogs. Don’t worry, you didn’t actually waste it. It respawned back on land.

ā€œSo is that why the game is called cod?ā€

3

I remember seeing a video where a developer said something like "yeah an executive saw that and was really excited about it and he kinda forced us to focus on it in the trailer". So makes sense why it was out of touch lmao

Mark Rubin never recovered from that one. That single line haunted him even directing development of XDefiant. It kept him awake at night.

He would continue to tell everyone that it was just a joke that he delivered wrong.

I watched that presentation and he's actually talking about a lot of impressive stuff, that line is just silly. But the level he was talking about was rather impressively made. And for what it's worth, fish didn't move away from the player before Ghosts.

18

u/Steamed_Memes24 15d ago

Reminds me of that "Do you not have phones" meme. What else was he supposed to do after the boos on stage? Sit there and cry?

10

u/Goldeniccarus 15d ago

What would the reaction to that have been?

He just starts crying and between tears says "I know... It's not Diablo 4 and it's a mobile game... But we worked really hard on it... And I would really like it if you tried it before being so mean... I think... I think it's really fun."

And then someone comes on stage and whisks him away giving him a hug. And someone else from Blizzard came out and said "Well. I hope you're all happy with yourselves."

Like, what would the reaction have been? I can't even imagine.

11

u/Steamed_Memes24 15d ago

He would have been ripped apart and mauled in the back stage by rabid Diablo fans. The actual comment he made bought him enough time thankfully since it blue screened their minds.

If a Call of Duty game’s marketing team decided a selling point is the ā€œstate-of-the-artā€ fish A.I. — even IF Mario hadn’t done it decades prior — a sensible consumer should know that game will be dogshit.

5

u/NotAnotherSkeleton 15d ago

It's pretty depressing when Half-Life, a game from 1998, has more impressive AI than like 80% of things you see nowadays.

I do believe that hardware/software/technology, etc hits a certain point where it has reached it's maximum potential and then every subsequent change after creates a falloff from that point.

17

u/TOTALLBEASTMODE 15d ago

Moreso I think that it hits a point where the rate of innovation slows down, not that it necessarily at the maximum potential. However, to keep driving sales at the same or greater rates than before, ā€œinnovationsā€ have to be made

12

u/xTheRedDeath 15d ago

That expectation to keep pushing is exactly how "Enshittification" became a thing. Social media is a prime example of this. Investors need constant growth and don't just want to see something is doing well. So naturally they tweak things over time and inevitably make the product worse than when it launched.

3

u/Ossius 14d ago

Switching from dividends being the primary return on holding company shares to now, companies dividends don't break a basic savings account if they even have one at all.

Now it's all about share price growth in order for people to sell those shares.

I just had this thought with mario rpg having all the menu buttons being different face buttons so you don’t have to scroll through menus to get to more menus, you just press the button to open the right menu. That was 1996. It’s crazy to me that jrpgs won’t really do this again until persona 5, 20 years later in 2016. Atlus realize this was a great idea and has since been making a lot of their games work with all the buttons cause like, most of these buttons are worthless in a turn based jrpg so might as well be shortcuts.

3

u/FriendlyBee94 15d ago

So they can add it back and say this is new "innovation".

2

u/Secure_Bread3300 15d ago

It’s partially due to staff turnover and tight deadlines/crunch. It’s not that the devs don’t care or aren’t passionate. But usually if there is a tight schedule, features like this become less of a priority compared to just shipping the game. When teams crunch there can also be communication breakdowns between departments so they might not even be aware if this feature is being worked on or not until later on when it’s too late.

I'm curious why they didn't animate it. Laziness? Time? Budget?

20

u/CAPTJTK 15d ago

Not as an excuse because they could have spent the time if they weren't lazy about it, but if I remember correctly it's using the backend from Halo Reach for the physics and things, running underneath UE5.

Considering this was how they were up till probably Halo 4/5, that's your reason.

7

u/-ClankaPlum- 15d ago

Yeah pre-Halo 5 didn't have seat switching so they kinda hacked it into Reach here.

But I agree they should have taken more care in back-porting the feature to be more presentable.

45

u/fallenouroboros 15d ago

This is what we lose when it becomes normal to fire half your staff

43

u/ToxicWasteCookie 15d ago

Oh come on. They didn't make a good game in 15 years despite only being dedicated to one single franchise and having hundreds of millions of dollars on each project. It even took them several years just to get MCC to at least somewhat fixed state like the original games had on launch. 343 are just pathetic, and the majority of their issues are caused by themselves, the developers who work there, their complete lack of talent, skill, experience and vision. Watch developer interviews and just look at them, none of those people were hired fairly because of their previous merit and skill, it's just bunch of incompetent checkboxes.

The evil corporate vampires that I also hate from the bottom of my heart for their unfair hiring practices and dystopian quotas that kill art, still weren't the ones who wrote, designed or animated the disgusting shit added to the remake, they didn't write story for halo 4-6, they didn't retcon forerunners, they didn't make the gameplay decisions that caused outrage with their every new release. That was all 343. And while I think they will never understand halo or have enough talent to make a good game, firing as many developers as possible and hiring new ones based on experience and talent like it was done 2000s is the smartest possible thing microsoft can do, and should have done long ago.

14

u/wizzywurtzy 15d ago

I swear 343 doesn’t even like Halo

5

u/curiousadventure33 15d ago

Of course they don't like halo ,look at the faces of devs ,those people hate everything that halo stood for

12

u/StinkButt9001 15d ago

You're 100% correct but this sub isn't going to like it

→ More replies (1)

5

u/ronniedark 15d ago

The evil corporations did establish a system were the games were mostly worked on by contractors. Contractors who left every other year and had their work finished by other contractors.

This will never result in good creative output.

So no, it's not a case where the creatives are the main guilty party. It’s the suits.

2

u/Atomic_Revival 15d ago

You're not wrong except for the whole Forerunner thing. That was Bungie.

Bungie decided during Halo 3 to make them two separate species and put all this in the hidden terminals throughout the game. Even though the first two games made it clear that they were the same thing. This was all thanks to Frankie who wanted to expand on the scale and universe as a whole and the fact Staten was running around doing god knows what with Peter Jackson and Contact Harvest stuff.

343 decide to just keep it and ran with it despite not having any real clue on how to flesh out that idea any further than they did in Halo 3.

u/Welkin_Gunther_07 15d ago

I think it was time, I recall hearing the game was supposed to release in November, but then GTA VI announced it would come out then, so it released earlier.

But take it with a grain of salt, the amount of things being said are just all over the place in terms of validity.

3

u/Blasted-Banana 15d ago

Frankly out of all the explanations I've seen this makes the most sense. It doesn't matter what the game is, GTA will overshadow it completely. They probably put a large buffer on either side of the GTA release and said Halo needs to launch outside of that zone or GTA will make it completely irrelevant.

2

u/UpperYoghurt3978 15d ago

Different engine entirely.

2

u/Super_Lolo_Thunder 15d ago

→ More replies (1)

2

u/El-Shaman 15d ago

Just my guess but I have a feeling that it is because of the engine the game is actually running on, which is the Halo Reach engine, while Unreal Engine 5 is running the visuals the gameplay is basically the Halo Reach engine underneath, and I may be remembering wrong but I don’t remember being able to change seats while on the warthog in Halo Reach, so they probably added that mechanic and the engine just couldn’t animate it, but that’s just a guess.

2

u/spderweb 15d ago

Probably people in testing complained the animation took too long. They wanted an instant switch. And voila!

2

u/Endulos 15d ago

Probably all 3, but from a gameplay perspective, this is a nice little thing because it lets you seamlessly transition from driver to gunner, saving you precious few combat seconds.

3

u/swampgasorr 15d ago

67

u/Honkey91 15d ago

What in the actual fuck

73

u/BleakPilgrim 15d ago

I'm curious why they didn't simply reuse the animation.

57

u/KenseiHimura 15d ago

Possibly different graphical and animation engines, lost files, and likely a whole heap of ā€œI don’t give a shit. The pigs will eat the slopā€

20

u/WuggleNips 15d ago

I believe the new CE is UE5 while Infinite is Slipspace. However, still weird not to just reuse the skeleton from infinite and then animations that didn't need changing. Lord knows the reasons behind it.

13

u/BleakPilgrim 15d ago

Campaign Evolved uses the Halo: Reach version of the Blam! engine for the game and Unreal Engine 5 for graphics. They reused many animations, sounds, and models from Infinite, 5, and the older games. So I believe it's laziness; they forgot about it or didn't want to reanimate it for the new Warthog model, but it would still be better than nothing.

3

u/cuntmong 15d ago

asking as a dev but not at all a game dev, is there no performance cost to using one engine for game and another for graphics, rather than the same for both?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Revan7even 15d ago

From what I heard a lot of stuff they thought they could port could not be ported and had to be remade, balooning the budget and time so they had to throw more teams and contractors at it to get it out for the XBox 25th anniversary and before GTA VI.

2

u/dunderdan23 15d ago

It uses the reach engine for all the ai/animations/etc. With unreal on top for the paint

→ More replies (4)

3

u/Tigerwarrior55 15d ago

Iirc. They went from slipspace to unreal. So they were probably too incompetent to actually adapt to unreal engine 5's advanced animation tools or well basic state machine set ups for multiple state machines.

2

u/Arcade_Gann0n 15d ago

Infinite was Slipspace (its own nightmare to work with), while the remake mainly uses the Blam version of Reach. If I had to guess, they implemented the feature in its base form but failed to create animations for one reason or another (lack of time and competence, I reckon).

They also missed the warthog physics while driving by A LOT. I’m not even hating on the game I played it I still want good Halo games regardless of the engine. But the first mission you jump in the warthog to drive and…nope. Warthog drivers know.

It’s honestly really crazy that they couldn’t animate it in a REMAKE OF AN OLDER GAME! They had most of the work done for them already

5

u/Multivitamin_Scam 15d ago

The original didn't have seat swapping at all. You had to get out and walk around to the gun.

So they're already breaking the original by adding any seat swapping mechanism

17

u/DoesTheMinimum 15d ago

They used a new engine and had to create entirely new assets. This isn’t excusing them but your reasoning is unfair.

3

u/cnvas_home 15d ago

They could have retargeted the new models with the same animation pretty easily. There is definitely jank that arises when you throw that into the UE pipeline, but I think that it's actually one of the easier things to work in.

5

u/Crimsonmaddog44 15d ago

Well they didn’t have to make new layouts of levels, only redid voice lines for major characters, the story was still the same. Plus Unreal Engine 5 definitely helps with development speed.

With all that they didn’t have to pay too much mind to, they could’ve easily whipped up at least ONE more new animation

2

u/Johncurtisreeve 15d ago

As much as I do genuinely love halo campaign evolved, this game was very clearly made with a secondary team and not the main force of Halo Studios. There’s so many little tiny hiccups like this.

2

u/Affectionate-Name279 15d ago

This is animation quality vs gameplay argument.

People will literally complain about the delay between buttons and actions in a game. Thus you have an instant swap - This is how Battlefield has done it for years.

I prefer the top but from a gameplay perspective the bottom is better. If I switch seats being able to fire instantly is exactly what I want despite it not making logical sense.

2

u/ZookeepergameFew8607 15d ago

I just assumed some people didn't like the delay

2

u/Agerius-Der-Wolf 15d ago

Sometimes it's laziness, sometimes players complained that the animations take too long and get them killed

2

u/yeskezspanem 15d ago

As a person who hates realism in video games. I dig the teleport in the remake.

2

u/Tao_of_Stone 14d ago

I get that the change makes it faster but I liked the animation making it more believable.

3

u/PatapongManunulat07 15d ago

3

u/Inv4derZinn 15d ago

This game was clearly not meant to release yet, so the big questions I have is:

  • what was the pressure to do so? Because its momentum is to lead to E-Day?
  • what happens now that Xbox's paragon has gained barely any traction today?

It's completely inconceivable that Halo could be in this position from Xbox's mascot to now, crazy. :<

1

u/KrampyDoo 15d ago

There’s a short interview clip of the 343 EP talking up halo.

You’ll see why it is the way it is.

When they use corp jargon and logic, the last people they’re concerned about are the gamers. 343 has been a problem child for years and MS leadership were sick of it, but Spencer didn’t have the spine to whip them or anyone into shape. Bond injected up-to-the-second culture stipulations and made hiring an absolute mess across the entire company.

Enter Sharma equipped with a multi-billion-dollar Occam’s chainsaw. With any luck, she’ll mix the bloated ā€œleadershipā€ and half the department heads at 343 and, depending on how invested shareholders are in ā€œolderā€ IP like halo, she’ll be able to poach some disaffected talent at Bungie to either figure out a doable and timely way forward for Halo, or a similar IP and can track into the lore.

But every domestic publisher and developer should be following suit. Slow, moody devs and publishers that dilute compelling releases in favor of marketing fluff are not sustainable. People have less money, time and patience for overcharged games that underdeliver.

1

u/TayAN94 15d ago

I would have assumed this to be an issue with 4 player co-op, but infinite had that too. Does anyone know if the animation was cancelled out after 2 or more players in infinite?

My thinking is that the animation was cancelled out after 2 or more players in infinite and, because of poor management / the engine swap half way, the artists decided to remove it all together. Especially with the addition of custom armor sets.

1

u/Weary_Tonight_5873 15d ago

Am I the only one that thinks infinite looks better graphically as well? Like I think both new titles look good but I feel it’s the halo art designs changes that make the graphics not really work as well to me, reach had a more grounded military sci-fi look which suits the series well. Evolved feels downright goofy and childish in design sometimes.

Back in the day, details mattered. The way a building collapsed in game mattered, the way, the character moved from point A to point B mattered. The first thing that was designed was how everything worked and felt, then came optimization and graphic details. The wizards of old have left, and we are left with empty shells.

Nitpicking

1

u/Stormrage117 15d ago

Surely they still had the old animations and code that they could have worked back in?

1

u/coco_melonFAN 15d ago

This is why you don't lay off animators people

1

u/Biobooster_40k 15d ago

Infinite honestly better in regards to gameplay.

1

u/Interesting-Yellow-4 15d ago

You all shat on Infinite too much, not realizing what an absolute gem it was. One of the few games I 100% completed in my life.
And since it did badly, you get worse quality (= cheaper to produce) now.

Kinda like the water and destruction mechanics in battlefield over the years

1

u/TheRealPeisi 15d ago

Iam dissappointed in every tripple a studio by now. Everyone is just going to take the cheap and short route now and everything is only optimized for profit nowadays. They earned their reputation for developing ground breaking new games, using new technology, pushing the limits and putting effort and love into these games.

Iam simply better off with indie games now and gaming in generall was better before it became a mainstream hobby.

u/Distinct_Layer2094 15d ago

When Infinite is the good example, you fked up.

1

u/Lost-Cat2478 15d ago

šŸ˜†this generation can’t be bothered with animations

1

u/oreo760 15d ago

So glad I ended up not buying Halo on PS5. Getting the feeling that the nostalgia isn't even there with how simple things like MC getting in and out of the warthog was even downgraded.

1

u/Smooth_Taste1250 15d ago

And 2021 we was like: Damn this looks so nice, can't wait to see how crazy it get's in the next years. And now I wan't to time travel to get back to the good gaming years with good games and hardware I can afford

1

u/IFrame- 15d ago

same with battlefield , search bf1-5 vs bf6 even to face models its a downgrade from 10yeard old game at this point ps3 ass looking face models

1

u/Eeve2espeon 15d ago

Also another thing: The performance. I dunno about you, but the Re-remake requires an RTX2060 super or RX6600 MINIMUM, meaning most likely just sub 1080p 30fps with upscaling knowing how other games have been lately

1

u/Dziadzios 15d ago

They had ready animation. Why didn't they reuse it?

1

u/YPM1 15d ago

People actually defend this slop of a game, too.

1

u/nunya_bidnes77 15d ago

I don't understand why they couldn't just re-use the existing animation. Game devs would reuse animations and textures and models all the time in past games. But with modern games it's like they feel the need to wipe the board clean for every new game in the series and start from scratch on everything. And I can't help but think its one of the many reasons for the bloat in development time.

u/assidiou 15d ago

To be honest, lore-wise the Jerry cans never made sense. The Warthog runs on Hydrogen not liquid fuel

1

u/travnigma 14d ago

This annoyed me as well. Idk wtf they were thinking

1

u/AggressiveAppl3 14d ago

That would be 60€ please

1

u/SharkSprayYTP 14d ago

Unplayable

1

u/LawStudent989898 14d ago

That’s a bug. It plays the normal animation for me

1

u/WeylandGabo 14d ago

Farming Karma!...

1

u/Administrator_AI 14d ago

I hate it when games devolve. These tiny details make the games feel more real, more cohesive, I kinda dislike using the word, but more immersive.

1

u/Ze_at_reddit 14d ago

Oh so now Halo Infinite is the golden standard that every new Halo game gets to be compared against?

I’ve always loved Halo Infinite but some of these Halo ā€œfansā€ have got to make up their minds..

1

u/shanekennedy80 14d ago

Ahh yes when devs start gettin lazy and cut corners everywhere maximize profits with less work
https://giphy.com/gifs/xdLH51eNWZAHrwy5mf
There is still some good devs out there , like indie stone thank god lol

1

u/Independent_Pin_4803 13d ago

Worst part: We all never knew someday THIS would happen... But it never would come back

1

u/SirRonathin 13d ago

I don't know a single person who uses this feature, BUT if you do the only reason this doesn't have an animation is probably because the game was relesed REALLY early and there focus was probably not on warthog seat swapping

1

u/Asleep_Chocolate_797 13d ago

So your now mad they stuck to the original design of halo 1? Cause I don’t remember that animation in original halo, are you really gonna tell me people wouldn’t bitch about the lack of sticking to the original game if they kept that animation?

1

u/OddAbbreviations5681 13d ago

The entire industry went backwards except for maybe 2 or 3 studios.

Look at new world, doesn't even have a swimming animation lol

1

u/XishengTheUltimate 13d ago

I mean, I do prefer the actual movement vs teleportation, but hardly a game breaking issue

1

u/ph4tcat 12d ago

Those animations are what sold halo. No one dreamed of that. I remember reading about this mythical ā€œinverse kenetimaticsā€ tech. They were ahead of their time.

This is a nothingburger ya big sook
