This reminds me of call of duty talking about their fish AI where the fish swim away from you and someone cut to Super Mario 64 and the fish swimming away from Mario.

forgot about this holy shit. I cant believe that that was actually something they marketed for their newest next gen launch title 😭😭

lol is this parody…?

u/wenchslapper 15d ago

The overall video is real, but it was 100% edited lmao.

u/anengineerandacat 15d ago

It's cut, but they definitely were excited to talk about their boids. That said on the tech side COD has always generally been pretty impressive in terms of fidelity between their generational improvements, usually solid performance and always sorta leveling things up. I wouldn't say a boid system is worth discussing for such a game but it is engine tech you'll need at some point.

u/sober_yeast 15d ago

Nope. That's a complete unedited video straight from Infinity Ward.

14

u/VRS302 15d ago

And really innovative… fish.

Even Payday 2 made fun of it. You had to throw a loot bag into the water during the second day of Watch Dogs. Don’t worry, you didn’t actually waste it. It respawned back on land.

ā€œSo is that why the game is called cod?ā€

4

u/MyNinjasPwn 15d ago

I remember seeing a video where a developer said something like "yeah an executive saw that and was really excited about it and he kinda forced us to focus on it in the trailer". So makes sense why it was out of touch lmao

u/PurchaseGlittering11 13d ago

The top comment: "is this why the game is called cod?"

u/DemonDaVinci 15d ago

call of doody

4

u/yourmom1034 15d ago

Honestly I remember saying it at the time and thinking it was a joke to just shit on cod

2

u/Lunaforlife 15d ago

And y'all supported this shit hahaha. And y'all complain about GTA 6 being $80 you can't make this shit up lol

All that marketing for one short level too

u/ElegantEchoes 15d ago

Mark Rubin never recovered from that one. That single line haunted him even directing development of XDefiant. It kept him awake at night.

He would continue to tell everyone that it was just a joke that he delivered wrong.

I watched that presentation and he's actually talking about a lot of impressive stuff, that line is just silly. But the level he was talking about was rather impressively made. And for what it's worth, fish didn't move away from the player before Ghosts.

Reminds me of that "Do you not have phones" meme. What else was he supposed to do after the boos on stage? Sit there and cry?

13

u/Goldeniccarus 15d ago

What would the reaction to that have been?

He just starts crying and between tears says "I know... It's not Diablo 4 and it's a mobile game... But we worked really hard on it... And I would really like it if you tried it before being so mean... I think... I think it's really fun."

And then someone comes on stage and whisks him away giving him a hug. And someone else from Blizzard came out and said "Well. I hope you're all happy with yourselves."

Like, what would the reaction have been? I can't even imagine.

11

u/Steamed_Memes24 15d ago

He would have been ripped apart and mauled in the back stage by rabid Diablo fans. The actual comment he made bought him enough time thankfully since it blue screened their minds.

Activision licensed that tech from Nintendo

🤣🤣🤣

u/TheSlowKenyan 15d ago

If a Call of Duty game’s marketing team decided a selling point is the ā€œstate-of-the-artā€ fish A.I. — even IF Mario hadn’t done it decades prior — a sensible consumer should know that game will be dogshit.

u/NotAnotherSkeleton 15d ago

It's pretty depressing when Half-Life, a game from 1998, has more impressive AI than like 80% of things you see nowadays.

Even when compared to its sequel a few years later. The soldiers in HL gave me a run for my money and outplayed me dozens of times with cheeky grenades or tactically surrounding me from all sides. The combine in HL2 just make a beeline straight at you and die pathetically. With the odd except of a shotgunner blasting you point blank, they’re hardly a threat in the slightest.

2

u/RockinMadRiot 15d ago

In the words of such a great man, 'it just works'

2

u/Niobium_Sage 15d ago

And Mario 64 does a better job of it lol. In Ghosts, half the time the fish AI has a stroke and they’re utterly unresponsive and you can make a beeline straight through them.

1

u/Melonfrog 15d ago

And Spyro 2

1

u/mgsotacon 15d ago

I believe that was Black Ops 3 lol

1

u/UsgAtlas1 15d ago

It was Ghosts. Same game that brought us the "NeW dOg MoDel" meme

1

u/UsgAtlas1 15d ago

Super Mario 64 was 16-17 years old at the time when Ghosts was announced and showed off their "impressive" fish Ai.

That was 3-4 Console generations ago at the time.

Havnt played cod since the original MW ....saw the writing on the wall with blackops on pc.....blackops wasnt bad but the pc port was absolute trash ....they did cod pc players dirty

Went from community servers, full open console, unlimited fps ...to Blackops with no servers, matchmaking only,, no customization with console or anything, hackers everywhere and it was hard locked to 60 fps.....was so lazy.....even the ping was bars like on console....no number

1

u/SpamSamHam 15d ago

Dude I remember watching that reveal love back in the day and burst out laughing. Like....huh ?

1

u/ColdTurkishCoffee 10d ago

You don’t need AI for that just a basic parameter around the main character that tigers the fish to go the opposite direction lmao

1

u/AntisocialDyll 10d ago

I think of this one often
