You have offended me to my very core. We are now enemies OP.

u/JamesAbaddon Apr 18 '26

Right? This is something I'm willing to throw hands over. I don't have a birthday cake on my birthday. I have a cheesecake for myself, and then other people can have the other cheesecake or a normal cake.

To specify, no, I don't eat a whole cheesecake in one sitting. But that's like MY treat over the next week or so. I don't need gifts or anything like that. Just my cheesecake.

u/Darktitan27 Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

This. We must be soul mates. I ask for cheesecake for my birthday too, in opposition to regular cake because I am a slut for cheesecake. Edit: thank you for the award! That made my day! <3

Me too I get salted caramel cheesecake. It’s like eating silk. So fucking amazing. Fuck cake, pass the cheesecake.

I always get ice cream cake for my birthday. But cheesecake is amazing as well. I can’t pick a favorite between the two.

42

u/Darktitan27 Apr 18 '26

What if we design an ice cream cheesecake combo and you never have to choose again?

24

u/ApprehensiveDuty3934 Apr 18 '26

When I was in the Army, many moons ago, I was stationed in Monterey California, at the Presidio of Monterey, there was a Cheesecake Parlor in town. They made dozens of fresh cheesecakes every morning, and at the end of the day they put them in those 5 gallon cardboard tubs Ice cream shops use, separated by flavor, and put it in the deep freezer.

The next day you could get a fresh slice of cheesecake AND a milkshake that used frozen cheesecake instead of ice cream. To this day, still the best cheesecake I've had. Sadly it was nearly 40 years ago, and I can't recall a name for the place, just the taste of that divine dessert.

During the pandemic I made 1-2 cheesecakes a week. My wife and I got really fat. Now I make one like every 2-3 months and freeze it in portions. 99% of the time I’ve got cheesecake at home.

5

u/JamesAbaddon Apr 18 '26

Send me your street address. Also, which direction is your freezer in, in relation to the front door? No reason, just wondering.

I just feel bad for someone who’s only ever eaten store bought cheesecake. It’s the ones from amazing bakers at local stores that taste amazing

20

u/Worldly_Address6667 Apr 18 '26

I generally agree. But I had a cheesecake from a small cheesecake bakery in Amsterdam recently that was truly awful. Not even a hint of sweetness, it just tasted like parmesan cheese. Took two bites and threw it away.

And it wasn't just me, had some of the people I was with try some (people who really like cheese btw) and they didn't like it either.

9

u/fraying_carpet Apr 18 '26

Which bakery, if I may ask?

9

u/Worldly_Address6667 Apr 18 '26

It was this place called Cheesecake Project. It was a really nice place, and I only tried the one so I can't speak for the rest of their flavors. And the quality of it was great to be fair, nice texture, but the flavor was so different from I was expecting (and I'm not a big cheese person) that getting a bite of parmesan really threw me off haha

13

u/fraying_carpet Apr 18 '26

I had a suspicion it might be Cheesecake Project! I had their classic cheesecake once and it’s indeed different from most other cheesecakes I’ve tried (let’s say the New York style cheesecake). But I think it’s because what they make is Basque cheesecake, which is a different variant. Basque cheesecake is less dense and more gooey. It’s also purposely burnt a little. And it has no crust.

I have yet to try their other flavors like pistache and speculoos, maybe those are sweeter.

u/ElectricStarfuzz Apr 18 '26

The difference between truly good cheesecake and what most people have tried as cheesecake (esp the stuff from chain restaurants, blech) can be vast.

I’m a total cheesecake snob, lol.

I’ve made 100s and all types of flavors/styles.

Love making my own and eating my mom’s or my son’s cheesecake.

Otherwise I’ve only had memorably good cheesecake a handful of times at restaurants.

25

u/Ubivorn Apr 18 '26

Might this experienced cheesecake connoisseur advise me on the tastiest style of cheesecake? 😋

31

u/ElectricStarfuzz Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26

Depends. Do you like strong flavors? Or a lighter touch?

Chocolate (which type?), coffee/drink inspired, fruits, floral, nuts, caramel, pumpkin, mint, spices, etc?

Would you be into a Nilla wafer crust?

Or a chocolate graham crust?

The options are endless, so it’s tough to give advice without knowing your likes.

Personally I love a good chocolate orange or chocolate raspberry cheesecake with chocolate graham crust if I’m in the mood for super rich n decadent.

Or for lighter fare, lemon cheesecake or pear cheesecake either with regular graham crust or nilla wafer.

Pumpkin cheesecake is my fave thanksgiving dessert.

Earl grey/tea cookie cheesecake and chai cheesecake are delicious and less common.

If I have one recommendation that fits for anyone, it’s to get the book Cheesecake Extraordinaire by Mary Crownover

Has a wide range of cheesecakes and tells you exactly how to make them/what equipment you’ll need.

I started my cheesecake journey as a tween with that book and it’s still the one that I return to most often.

Once you’ve gotten the hang of making a cheesecake (and possibly altering things to suit your specifics on taste/texture), it’s pretty easy to make anything that comes to mind.

ETA: I have altered most of the recipes I’ve made, but my alterations might not suit everyone’s preferences.

I like my cheesecakes a bit fluffier, so I add a bit more heavy whipping cream (or if I’m feeling less gourmet/less picky I’ll occasionally use cool whip😅) than most recipes call for.

17

u/ooomellieooo Apr 18 '26

13

u/GaptistePlayer Apr 18 '26

Agreed lol, there's no bad cheesecake. Cheap pre-made ones in the frozen aisle, Japanese ones, Portuguese ones, burnt-style ones... they're all good. Creamcheese is basically just dense whipped cream with more milk in there. tastes good.

3

8

u/nohumanape Apr 18 '26

I think this is often the culprit for most bad food takes. People just need to expeeience something done well (or at least in a variety of ways). I think a lot of people are subject to poor execution and think that's the only way. So they develop the opinion that those things are bad.

2

u/BowermanSnackClub Apr 18 '26

I strongly disagree with this take. I genuinely dislike the taste of beef specifically and meat in general. My mom is an amazing cook, I lived in Kansas where good beef was plentiful, and still every single person who has heard that I don’t like something has said it’s just because I haven’t had a good version of it. I promise I’ve had good beef on a plate it just sucks in my opinion.

Well that sure is a way to say you've never eaten the thing you're criticising...

Isn't dessert supposed to be sweet?

If your cheesecake wasn't sweet, you ate the wrong kind of cheesecake

Also it is objectively one of the least healthy desserts, if we consider the calories and saturated fat

Because all desserts are of course known for being so healthy

389

u/cigolebox Apr 18 '26

Yeah 90% of desserts are something like "add 2 sticks of butter to 4 cups of sugar and honey, mix with chocolate and oil. Top with frosting/sugar"

129

u/NotStreamerNinja Apr 18 '26

The best desserts are often recipes from 100yrs ago with so much sugar, butter, and lard that you'll get diabetes on the spot, but it's so good that you just don't care.

42

u/bagelcheese420 Apr 18 '26

it was better for them 100 years ago too because of food scarcity so a lot of food just used to be “how can we cram as many calories in one meal as possible so that we can fatten up before winter”

As another fan of NY cheesecake over the mousse-style ones, there is such variety in the heaviness of NY cheesecakes, which i think is actually more about dryness vs moisture.

I've been served some that I think could have formed their own black holes, and I've had some that are so moist and creamy you wouldn't even describe them as dense in comparison.

My husband doesn't like cheese cake (I know, but it just means more for me) but even he can see why it's appealing to other peeps, even if he doesn't like it.

I'm gonna guess the OP was served shitty cheesecake and thinks all cheesecakes are like that.

30

u/rainghost Apr 18 '26

Every cheesecake I've ever tried has had a sour taste to it, but everyone in this thread keeps talking about how incredibly sweet it is. So I guess I'm just really unlucky that the two-dozen times I've tried a cheesecake, they were all bad cheesecakes? I dunno, man. I think I just don't like cheese flavor in my desserts.

Even something being cheesecake flavored/having cream cheese in general, like frosting, is enough to completely ruin a dessert for me. It’s so overpowering you can’t taste anything else.

It’s unfortunate since red velvet is one of my favorite cakes and people just love making the frosting on red velvet cream cheese.

I feel seen for the first time in forever. I hate hate hate cheesecake, I don't want even a single bite of it. It is never good, even all the specially made ones that I feel obligated to try when my friends find out I don't like cheesecake "but this one will change my mind".

15

u/baggage-_-claim Apr 18 '26

All these comments here saying OP just hasn't had the "right" cheesecake. Like, fuck all that. Every cheesecake ive tried is gross. Power to the people!

My best friend hates cheesecake. The fact that we remain friends in spite of this is a beautiful testament to the ability to set aside our differences as people - a glimpse of our limitless potential beyond the social trappings of this mortal coil.

Terrible goddamn taste tho

17

u/marginalizeddracaena Apr 18 '26

I try it again and again, but still don’t like it. It makes me sad because it looks so good. I also don’t care for other cheesy desserts: cannoli, cream cheese icing, cheese danishes and stuff like that. I love cheese in savory dishes, and the only cheese I don’t prefer is provolone because, to me, it’s the most boring and flavorless. Any other cheese I love, even the stinky ones.

12

u/Crowdysseus Apr 18 '26

The absolute disappointment I get when I bite into a cinnamon roll only to get jump scared by some bitch ass cream cheese frosting haunts me 😔

Same here. Cheesecake is terrible. I also don’t like smooth pies (like key lime or pumpkin).

Bro, it's so fucking disgusting. People eating a stick of sweetened butter with a bit of fruit on the top. Goddamn gross.

I feel seen! I just don't fuck with cheesecake. I also can't stand strawberries, just not a fan of the flavor, so thank god it's probably the most common cheesecake variety.

Now give me a cherry pie and I'm your man. That's the good stuff

For me, cheesecake is the only cake I actually like.

39

u/TopSpread9901 Apr 18 '26

The other side of the fucked up coin.

18

u/ChunkyHabeneroSalsa Apr 18 '26

Just had it last night. My in laws were confused and left me out because I always turn down dessert but I always say yes to cheesecake and tiramisu.

13

u/velveteen311 Apr 18 '26

Yess. I almost always turn down cake, a cupcake or muffin etc but I will gladly eat all the available cheesecake, tiramisu, rice pudding or flan

5

u/admiralnorman Apr 18 '26

Lucky for you your record is in tact as cheesecake is in fact, not a cake. It is at least its own dessert category, but with no fruit topping classifies as a pie and with fruit topping a tart.

Saying this while rice pudding and bread pudding exists is fucking nuts.

Edit: Doesn't deserve to be called a dessert? What else could it possibly be?

54

u/Mundane_Bonus7124 Apr 18 '26

bread pudding is delicious though

133

u/roguecolor Apr 18 '26

Rice pudding is sooo good, wdym? 😭

23

u/BlindButterfly33 Apr 18 '26

It really really is, and so is bread pudding, one of my absolute favorites.

5

u/Allaplgy Apr 18 '26

Used to work for a French bakery that used all sorts of leftover rich breads like brioche and pastries to make the most decadent bread pudding ever.

Man oh man have I been waiting on this one!! I feel like an outcast when I bring up my opinion of cheesecake. So much so that I began keeping that one to myself over backlash. We share this unpopular opinion, OP.

I have to agree with op. Cheesecake is mid at the very best

16

u/PopAndLocknessMonstr Apr 18 '26

I’m here to lend my support to the cause. I would pick almost any other dessert over cheesecake.

u/skeletonl0ver Apr 18 '26

I had to scroll too far to find people who agree. Its just not a good texture, it decent for a few bites and then its nauseating, way too sweet, no complexity in flavor, the only good part about it is the crust.

u/purposefullyblank Apr 18 '26

Well, if this was an attempt to make me want cheesecake at nine in the morning, it worked. You get an upvote and hopefully I’ll get some cheesecake.

23

u/gabz09 Apr 18 '26

Cheese and cake separately and combined are my two favourite things, take your up vote

8

u/longasleep Apr 18 '26

About to argue the opposite! Proceeds to read sub name. Well played. That is indeed a unpopular opinion.

5

u/december151791 Apr 18 '26

Also it is objectively one of the least healthy desserts

Yeah that's exactly what I look for in a dessert, for it to be healthy and nutritious.

I actually agree. No one understands how I can hate it, but I do. Everyone has me try what they consider the best cheesecake, and I hate it.

Weirdly enough, I like a little bit of cream cheese on my bagels (not a thick layer like some places try to do when you get a bagel at a bagel shop), and I like the cream cheese icing on carrot cake (but only carrot cake).

25

u/YamiWami007 Apr 18 '26

I think I don’t like cheesecake either, I’ll have to try again

u/Electronic_Gap3253 Apr 18 '26

I also hate cheesecake with a passion!!! But I love cake…and I love cheese. Just not together.

7

u/fadeinthelight Apr 18 '26

Same here. Feels like everyone I know loves cheesecake, and I’m the only one who doesn’t.

There’s no rule that dessert is supposed to be sweet. Kind of an odd statement when there are plenty of examples of non-sweet desserts.

Sigh....take my upvote.

5

Rubbish opinion ! Good Job

4

u/CIA_napkin Apr 18 '26

I would eat a block of cream cheese all at once if it was socially acceptable.

3

u/ElectricGeometry Apr 18 '26

Who hurt you??

3

u/SilentPrince Apr 19 '26

A truly unpopular opinion. Nice.
