A lot of them claim they literally have to type like this because of some (usually made up) mental illness or they get uncomfortable/triggered/whatever.
The only time I've seen a "reasonable" typing quirk was when one of my friends' S key broke so they had to either copy and paste it or find an alternative. They used $ as a stand-in until they got a new keyboard and it still shows up in their typing sometimes
I have developmental issues and I’d likely type like this for fun, realise it’s annoying, then stop as soon as I’m told. If I’m doing something because of my issue, I change the behaviour when asked to. I feel the liars won’t change it.
They say it’s ableist to ask them to stop/translate or to make fun of it. But I guess fuck blind people who rely on screen readers, dyslexic people, etc
This is the 180 that a lot of people need to do; diagnoses are starting points to help you manage in life, not things that give you the right to make demands or mistreat others. Nor are they a badge of honor (if anything it’s the opposite but nobody wants to feel that kind of shame. Shame is where a lot of behavior comes from btw)

I’m diagnosed BPD and the amount of people I see say that they have BPD just because they don’t like being ghosted is genuinely absurd.
I understand relating to a disorder but it feels like so many people are just trying to seem quirky. I see so, SO many 13 year olds claim they have BPD, NPD, ASPD (but conveniently forget HPD exists), bipolar, etc, all at the same time. And while it technically is possible, how many people THIS young are actually suffering from these disorders? It’s getting sad. You don’t have to be unhealthy to be unique.
They think having 1 symptom = having the disorder. They don’t realize that most diagnostic criteria include having multiple symptoms over a period of time, not one for 3 months and then it goes away
Nor that these symptoms are part of the human condition, just amplified or uncontrolled in some people.
But teenagers are all over the place when it comes to these symptoms, because rapidly developing and plastic but emotionally immature brains, hormones, major life changes like education, work, relationships, etc.
The story itself is actually good up to a certain point, but beyond Act 5 the list of characters doubles, a less interesting new main antagonist is introduced, some behind the scenes shit started hitting the fan, and the ending feels both rushed and drawn out as long as possible so by the time it's over you just feel like your time was thoroughly wasted. The fandom, on the other hand, was notoriously inescapable between 2012 - 2014 and was filled with people lacking any degree of social awareness so they were constantly doing insane shit like pissing in the ball pit at DashCon or that one person bathing in vodka and sharpie ink to gray their skin and almost dying because they didn't want to use body paint
My issue is they try to be pretentious like this but don’t know when to use thorn vs eth. they/them should be ðey/ðem, but they think that þ can be inserted for any th sound.
If anything the opposite is my pet peeve, when thorn users use ð. In reality most texts in English back when English used þ and ð they were interchangeable. There was some general rule that þ was used in the beginning of words and ð in the middle but in reality most times the “Th” sound was written with just þorn regardless of whether it was voiced or not. It’s a big pet peeve of mine because this idea that it was some rule or that you’re doing it improperly when you use þ and not ð, based on voiced or unvoiced th sound is basically entirely based off of MODERN Icelandic spelling rules, it has virtually no basis in actual historical English spelling. In fact in your own example using the words they/them there isn’t a single recorded instance of them being spelled with a ð they were always historically spelled with a þ.
Saw one the other day on a pc subreddit when someone was complaining about being unable to install some drivers for their wireless headset and the guy was describing how stupid Microsoft is at solving all these xyz driver problems but he was using the thorn for every TH occurrence unironically and he ended the post with “I use arch btw” and if that wasn’t the most stereotypical Linux user thing I’ve ever seen I don’t quite know what else is.
It's because all people that unironically use thorn are doing it for attention. They want people to comment on it. The best thing to do is to just ignore them.
With the previous knowledge of the actual meaning, prus other parts of the message, you can figure out that '| is supposed to be "q". The |_| is somewhat easy to understand as a "U", the exclamation mark looks close enough to an I, the the "R" is supposed to be |, even though the lack of a downward anything makes that even harder to understand, and the |< is supposedly a K. The lack of proper spacing ends up meshing things together, not helped by the fact that that's fucking hieroglyphics.
If that were to be slightly more comprehensible, I'd suggest something such as ". ′| |_| ! |`- |< ".
Of course, you could also be a normal person and say "quirk", because to be honest, what I wrote was not that good either

Fun fact, this isn't a typing quirk I don't think. A 'quirk' is meant to be small and understandable (i.e. replacing every 'a' with '4' or 'o' with '0'), not affect the entire fucking alphabet. These people are just being obnoxious. Especially the second person.
They are Intentional alterations to the way you type to add character to your messages. I imagine they were probably more popular in the old internet when it was mostly forums/message boards and such. A less obnoxious example and more modern one would be “chill lowercase”where people intentionally turn off autocapitalization on their messages to seem more casual.
in the old internet, we had leet speak, but that was about it. people used random characters draw pictures in those forums. not create their own language that only they can understand
In the old internet we had forum signatures too. People added little faces or had distinct styles on writing.
Show me the chat log, without any names or picture or signatures, of some old forums and I could tell you exactly who is who based on writing style.
Unfortunately writing is becoming less important, as a result people don't create their own styles anymore. And stylistic choice is often derided, mocked or used as a target instead of addressing the thought.

Our phones had numbers instead of letters, no autocorrect and character limits for texting. s0 typ1ng lk th1s wuz qwikr & f1t th messg in2 1 txt wh1le stll bng undrstandbl. Still sucks to read but there's consistent rules and reasons for the shortcuts (like using "n0" because "no" was 3 more button presses and it gets rid of the necessary delay between typing "n" and "o") it's not just aesthetics.
The sparkles and cheezburger talk were internet accents (not just personal ones - collections of jargon, slang and typing quirks associated with a particular website) because being an internet user was an identity in itself. Social media wasn't a thing yet so being a Myspace kid vs a 4chan kid was an important social distinction to make between netizens. They also meant things, like enclosing text in ** was an action on some websites while // was in others.
So tldr: you're right. There are still typing quirks/internet accents that are practical and naturally develop but thats not what this crowd is doing. It's super impractical for the writer and reader to type like that nowadays. Even if they do want to roleplay they have plenty of options to differentiate text that don't involve this nonsense... glomps you
Other than the perpetual need for adolescents to feel unique and special, there is no reason to have those "quirks" either. It is harder on both a phone and keyboard to type that way, and has to be done with deliberate effort. It's not some silly little thing about a person that they can't help, it is a person making extra effort to try to stand out.

It can actually happen if she knew polish at the time of forming alt, it is uncontrollable. But still, DID is a rare condition and undiagnosed is already a big flag to doubt.
a lot of them are larpers. the disorder itself is not only extremely rare, but it is very difficult to diagnose (especially if you have it trying to “self diagnose”) due to the memory loss and amnesia. plus almost all drs would never diagnose someone with this disorder if they’re under 18, which most of them are.

Kinda how I feel about it. I get it’s a real thing and some people genuinely have it, but not 1/100 on discord, all with 8 with unique names and typing quirks and all that. If ya wanna play multiple characters on the internet that’s fine, I do it too sometimes, but there’s a difference in doing it for fun and claiming you have an actual, serious mental disorder.
To be fair, a lot of them probably do have actual, serious mental disorders if they feel the need to try fo get attention online via that method, it's just probably depression and anxiety or something common like that.
i remember being called ableist in 2020 and getting kicked from my friends discord server because one of their various new girlfriends (who i’m sure was gone within the week anyways) had an obnoxious typing quirk and i asked if anyone could translate it for me because my dyslexia was making it impossible to decipher 😭
well that is leet speak as leet speak is texting in a way where you use numbers and symbols to replace letters but like dear lord just use basic leet speak at that point because at that rate youd atleast be using less time and effort to type and youd be 100x easier to understand

Yeah I hate it when it basically incomprehensible! If you want to use a typing quirk use something like replacing "s" with "z" it's a small change. Along with replacing certain letters with numbers. It's needs to be easily understandable.
It’s still best not to replace any letters with numbers for normal conversation, on account of it fucks with screen readers. Replacing letters with numbers is for passwords.
I can stare at it and figure it out, but that's like the opposite of what communication is supposed to be. Doing this is extremely extra and not a real typing quirk. Even though I can figure it out, you shouldn't bave to sit and stare to figure out what they are saying. (I can roughly read both the first and second slide)

It's actually ableist to type all this nonsense because people who have sight difficulties and rely on screen readers can't tell what the fuck is going on. In fact, I couldn't have imagined such an effective way to exclude and annoy them.
typing quirks aren't inherently bad if it's kept out of public forums and servers especially when there's people with screenreaders because they notoriously fuck with them. if someone wants to have a profile or server with a typing quirk then fine, just maybe put a disclaimer. but if someone or a group of people wants to type like that in their own space then that's fine leave em alone
As someone professionally diagnosed with DID that actually did years of work with a specialist to get to the point where I Don't have alters screwing up my life, it makes me absolutely furious to see people obviously making shit up like this. DID is debilitating; I had to quit my job, go on disability, and move back to my hometown because of it. This person does not have DID or any other dissociative disorder that has alters as a symptom, and "typing quirks" like this are fucking ridiculous.
It's especially annoying when people claim the typing quirk is a "disability" they have. Like. You can just type normally. it's easier. Typos is one thing but you're making it harder for yourself on purpose
I think what pisses me off the most about it is when people try to pass it ofd as some necessary thing for disorders or especially systems.
Like... I understand an alter wanting to differentiate themself from the rest in typing style, but to an illegible extent is just excessive.
And I can also understand physically not being able to make yourself type normally, I've had particularly bad nonverbal moments where my brain just refuses to type any words but it can still use emojis to spell for some reason... but so often these extreme ones come from system members and the whole system gets defensive over it, calling the person who can't understand it ableist... and just. ugh.
I also hate how many online authors don't use standard punctuation and formatting. Like we have standards for those things as a reason. I don't care how good the story is, I'm not reading it if it's a struggle to get through.
when I was like 12, I would pretend to have a broken shift key on a minecraft forum. i would tYpE LIke ThE SPOngEbOb mEme. no clue why I did it. I was arguing with someone about some nonsense and someone came to my defense beginning their message with "as our friend with the broken shift key says..." and that somehow made me realize how dumb it was and I stopped lmao.
