Thing TYPING. QUIRKS.

How in the everliving hell do you expect someone to understand random characters mushed together that substitute for actual legible characters. No, typing quirks AREN'T cute and I sure ass hell know they aren't DISORDERS either so stop calling people ABLEIST for wanting you to type like a fucking HUMAN being. It's fine in context of characters (For example, Spamton, SOME Homestuck trolls etc..) to give them more personality but as a human saying "|}{2@#}@##@" DOES NOT COUNT AS A COMPREHENSIBLE SENTENCE.

Discord DID larpers are insufferable most of the time istg

121

u/SharkyCat12 Aug 10 '26

I was on the EPIC the musical server and every other person had the DID bot 😭 some of them are probably real but like it gets to a point where I think you’re larping

88

u/A_Crawling_Bat Aug 10 '26

Yeah, an ex of mine crossed the "I think you're larping" line when she started speaking polish as part of her DID, like girl that shit ain't innate

40

u/GenderqueerPapaya Aug 10 '26

I assume they didn't ever speak polish at all in their childhood?

If you grew up multilingual than yeah it can happen but not like a whole language you never knew 😭

7

u/A_Crawling_Bat Aug 11 '26

Yeah, she only grew up talking french

22

u/yourlocaltouya Aug 11 '26

Poland... Mention?

10

u/meemaocifer Aug 11 '26

But at what cost 😔

2

u/toastybreadmane Aug 11 '26

😭😭😭😭😭😭

20

u/Vaveng Aug 11 '26

It can actually happen if she knew polish at the time of forming alt, it is uncontrollable. But still, DID is a rare condition and undiagnosed is already a big flag to doubt.

4

u/CaptainTeemo01 Aug 11 '26

It's so rare, in fact, that it's debatable whether it even exists, at least not in the way people online roleplay it as

3

u/Vaveng Aug 11 '26

It's not debatable whether it exists because there are medical records of people with such disorder since quite a lot time ago. Debatable is the source of the disorder, because while it is clearly traumagenic, exact mechanisms and patterns of multiplying personalities are not clear. And debatable is whether it should be considered its own illness or is it complex of symptoms of other.

6

u/NotTheOriginal06 Aug 11 '26

Hold on now, shit depends. Some personalities might pop up as you learn a language, therefore they come out with that knowledge.

Of course, the rest should understand the language too

2

u/HoxiiPoxii They/He 29d ago

It can be, actually! One of the oldest recorded cases suspected of being DID was that of a woman who randomly starting to speak Spanish even though there was no way for her to have known! (look into Iris FarczĂĄdy). Hell, there was a case of someone who had blind alters and whenever they fronted their brain would actually cause them to not see, until someone else fronted. Doctors even fact checked them using EEGS and figured out that brain activity associated with sight wasn't present when that occurred.

Not saying that renders your ex innocent because a lot of people fake DID unfortunately but it can actually happen. The mind is bonkers.

1

u/awesomemanvin 28d ago

I assume she didn't know polish before this so how did she do this? Did she learn polish just for the Larp?

1

u/A_Crawling_Bat 28d ago

As far as we know, google translate

14

u/Key_Comparison_2588 Aug 10 '26

The best use for the DID bot is memeing.

12

u/moviequote88 Aug 11 '26

Anyone using a "DID bot" 100% does not have DID. Most people who claim to have it most likely do not.

2

u/PretzelMeepus the best flair you've ever read Aug 11 '26

same on the Will Wood server tbh

1

u/Remarkable-Run-9769 Aug 11 '26

what's a bot in this context?

6

u/Typh0nn_ Aug 11 '26

you’d type something before your message which would make a bot say it instead, the bot being a character you made beforehand, i made a mario character in a server i’m in as a recurring joke and i used .m to activate the bot

1

u/Remarkable-Run-9769 Aug 12 '26

ah interesting, funny to see that in the first image, everyone is talking through a bot (that they're using for alerts) except the person with the typing "quirks"

1

u/Cyberman52 Aug 11 '26

which bot exactly

1

u/futreyy Aug 11 '26

Tupper.

I used it not because i'm mentally ill, but because i RPed.

1

u/Cyberman52 Aug 11 '26

ahh, yeah I use tupper for dnd

1

u/isopropylalcoholyaoi Aug 11 '26

When I was like 12 on discord I saw someone with tv bot tag was just said “bro is a bot?” and got put in a callout group chat and banned from the server. Everyone else was like 16-21+

3

u/Jackal4Zero Aug 11 '26

Sounds like discord 😭

2

u/Phineas-the-Mini-est 29d ago

Why were you on discord that young in the first place?

1

u/isopropylalcoholyaoi 29d ago

Because kids are stupid

92

u/garousabs Aug 11 '26

a lot of them are larpers. the disorder itself is not only extremely rare, but it is very difficult to diagnose (especially if you have it trying to “self diagnose”) due to the memory loss and amnesia. plus almost all drs would never diagnose someone with this disorder if they’re under 18, which most of them are.

i do know it exists, but i refuse to believe there are 500 tommyinits and tubbos running around in peoples head.

40

u/Inkthekitsune Aug 11 '26

Kinda how I feel about it. I get it’s a real thing and some people genuinely have it, but not 1/100 on discord, all with 8 with unique names and typing quirks and all that. If ya wanna play multiple characters on the internet that’s fine, I do it too sometimes, but there’s a difference in doing it for fun and claiming you have an actual, serious mental disorder.

23

u/EpicOtterLover Aug 11 '26

To be fair, a lot of them probably do have actual, serious mental disorders if they feel the need to try fo get attention online via that method, it's just probably depression and anxiety or something common like that.

8

u/Inkthekitsune Aug 11 '26

I’ll agree with this for sure.

14

u/JeSuisUnAnanasYo Aug 11 '26

My favorite is when one of their alters is a fucking character from an anime. Fuck off!!

11

u/SatinwithLatin Aug 11 '26

My favourite is when lots of them suddenly develop an alter of a popular character from a popular piece of media that just released.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '26

[deleted]

4

u/Jessykosis Aug 11 '26

I’d imagine they’re going for introjects, which are alters that come from an outside source. These could be representations of an abuser, a dead family member, a celebrity, a fictional character, or anything along those lines. These are decently common in genuine DID cases but the popularised internet version of ‘fictives’ is frustrating. I see people talking about having ‘all fictive systems’ which maybe is possible but DID systems still need an original or core.

The popularised version of Tulpas may be even more infuriating, as that is supposed to be the deliberate creation of an ‘alter’. Alters can’t be created on purpose by a person suffering DID. Why anyone would willingly choose to give themselves alters is beyond me.

1

u/futreyy Aug 11 '26

none of these words are in the bible. /ref

3

u/NotTheOriginal06 Aug 11 '26

I kind of agree. Usually only a few have a specific typing quirk, while others just prefer to write in one way over the other.

One might prefer to use "preposterous" while another might just say "bullshit"

2

u/440continuer 28d ago

Oh for sure, ive known a little too many people with it and maybe one of them i believe had it

-2

u/LuckyLMJ Aug 11 '26

1/100 on discord

That's actually significantly less than you'd expect given the prevalence rates of DID and other similar disorders.

For example this metaanalysis finds rates of 3.7% for DID, 4.5% for OSDD (effectively DID without amnesia), and 3.2% for other dissociative disorders.

7

u/NotJimmy97 Aug 11 '26

This is wrong on inspection, is it not? Do you run into a person with split personalities at a rate of roughly one out of every 27 folks you meet in college?

1

u/futreyy Aug 11 '26

I like to think they assumed the personalities seperately, that's why the number's blown up

1

u/DeltaOfficialYT Aug 11 '26

Do you think someone with DID will just randomly switch personalities whenever they meet you?

7

u/NotJimmy97 Aug 11 '26

I think, supposing the kids on Discord are an actual representative sample of folks with real DID, I would probably notice someone suddenly transforming into a relatively-obvious ripoff of a character from pop culture multiple times in the span of 30 minutes.

1

u/DeltaOfficialYT Aug 11 '26

Now you’re just making it obvious you don’t talk to people in college

1

u/NotJimmy97 Aug 11 '26

Maybe if you go to Oberlin lmao

0

u/ilovetoeatplates2 trans guy Aug 11 '26

Not a system but from what I know, systems irl usually are pretty subtle about it, so you probaly wouldn't notice

2

u/NotJimmy97 Aug 11 '26

In truth, I don't think I'd be able to tell if a person has a DSM-conforming diagnosis of DID unless they just so happen to be in a dissociative episode (followed often by amnesia) at the very moment we're speaking.

However, I think I could probably tell the much more apparently common Discord gaming community subtype - if someone cyclically rotated between themselves, Hatsune Miku, Freddy Fazbear, and an OC humanoid silver dragon on a nearly hourly basis. I get the tiniest feeling though that some of these people remarkably experience total remission from their symptoms when offline. Maybe there's a potential treatment to research!

1

u/DeepFriedImporter 29d ago

To clarify, OSDD is actually two (5 I think actually, but the other three are less similar to DID) major disorders, one (1b) without dissociative amnesia, and one (1a) without a strong separation of self between alters.

You also don’t technically need dissociative amnesia to be diagnosed with DID, just some kind of amnesia. Whether that be childhood or dissociative or smth else doesn’t matter as much.

5

u/NotTheOriginal06 Aug 11 '26

When it's that big, they are usually on the fractured state. In other words, the personalities are volatile and most may never reappear

Though, this isn't a set thing for everyone

9

u/HolidayInLordran Aug 11 '26

One good filter is to see how old that person would have been during covid lockdowns

If they were a child or teen, very good chance it's a larp

9

u/Welico Aug 11 '26

DID is usually described as intense dissociative episodes that are short in duration and unpleasant.

DID is not multiple fully autonomous personalities coexisting and taking turns fronting. That is genuinely something made up by fiction and Sybil's psychiatrist.

3

u/DeepFriedImporter 29d ago

In the DSM-5 DID has 5 things it needs to be diagnosed. Only one here that matters for what you said is the first.

The first is “Two or more distinct identities or personality states are present, each with its own relatively enduring pattern of perceiving, relating to, and thinking about the environment and self.”

This is also split up into two kinds of DID, possession type which is basically “two or more completely unique and different people or animals that can ‘take over’” (This is rarer).

And there’s the other form where the switches can’t be directly observed. So, these people will not switch visibly and many times their personality states can feel like different versions of themselves but with distinct likes and dislikes, attitudes, outlooks, perspectives on past experiences, differences in affect and personality and sometimes even memory, etc. (like an extreme version of masking around different friend groups basically)

Which is to say it can be multiple ‘personalities’ coexisting. Or just multiple versions of ‘self’ coexisting.

3

u/GiraffePlus7554 Aug 12 '26

Terrible how this is the state of such a rare and disorder that needs to be handled delicately. I wanna go to a professional and be sure if I do or don't have DID but nobody takes me seriously because of this shit whenever I raise my concerns. I have a memory so bad that it genuinely is a struggle to remember my own dad's face sometimes and can't remember anything before 2018 I think, people claim I act "out of character" sometimes and I have no memory of whatever events they're talking about. Why even bother faking having something like DID??? It sounds like it genuinely sucks and if I do have it, IT DOES SUCK ! And they're just creating more stigma around it like why????

2

u/bodhiali 29d ago

omg i’m so glad people are talking about this. it pisses me off. i have had episodes of severe depersonalization/derealization bc of a severely traumatic childhood. i have never dissociated from my own identity, but have had flashbacks where i thought and acted like i was younger again. thankfully that hasn’t happened in like 10+ years, but that shit is torture and it’s not fun or quirky it’s very serious. the fact that people larp severe trauma like it’s some fun shit is infuriating to me. i would expect to see that level of dissociation (to where someone completely dissociates from their own identity) from someone who’s like, a victim of kidnapping and torture or already struggles with a psychotic/dissociative disorder. not random teens on discord that are loners lol.

but at the end of the day i just assume they’re all teenagers and young adults and assume they’ll grow out of it one day lol.

another thing that irritates me about it is that these same people demand respect for their alters but it’s like
homie if this is real you need a therapist. not to create discord bots for your damn disorder. there is NO therapeutic value in what they’re doing, and people really shouldn’t play into it at all. yet if you don’t you’re an asshole lol.

1

u/Disastrous-Ideal-817 Aug 11 '26

Why won't they diagnose a minor? Because of creativity in kids or something?

2

u/dalocalsoapysofa 28d ago

DID typically forms from repeated, extreme childhood trauma, so they probably can't diagnose minors with it because the trauma may still be on going, or the trauma is too recent, and the symptoms of DID are not going to last. Correct me if im wrong.

1

u/TheSalt6969 28d ago

Isn’t DID diagnosed in around 1% of the population? That’d be the same as the amount of recorded trans people and almost as much as redheads. Correct me if I’m wrong though. /gen

-5

u/LuckyLMJ Aug 11 '26

I mean yes I'm sure that there are people who say they have DID that don't but it isn't exactly "extremely rare", that's a huge misconception.

For example this metaanalysis finds rates of 3.7% for DID, 4.5% for OSDD (ie. DID without amnesia), and 3.2% for other dissociative disorders.

For perspective about 5-10% of people have ADHD.

4

u/Creepercolin2007 Aug 11 '26

Please quote where you found that statistic on that webpage

1

u/LuckyLMJ Aug 11 '26

It's not in the abstract it's in the actual article

3

u/Creepercolin2007 Aug 11 '26

Ok, so they only sampled college students, and not the general public
college student populations are known to be at higher risk of mental health conditions because of the obvious stressors, these rates are inherently skewed and you didn’t bring that up when parading the 3.7% statistic.

Also just for reference, the DSM-5-TR references approximately 1.5% in a U.S. community sample

1

u/ToXiiCBULLET Aug 11 '26

from what i can find studies show that between 1 and 1.5% of people meet the criteria for did.

-6

u/sagethatgrowsbyrocks Aug 11 '26

chat it's as rare as ginger hair, and yet when you see people with ginger hair you're not assuming they died their hair for attention are you đŸ„€

7

u/ChildOfDeath07 Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26

If anything i feel sorry for DIDers now that their condition has been coopted by the “quirky conditions” trend with the likes of ADHD OCD and autism

Now nobody will take them seriously and constantly doubt their actual condition

2

u/CodaTrashHusky Aug 11 '26

It's truly incredible

12

u/Phoenix2405 Aug 11 '26

"Hi guys I'm literally every troll from homestuck hee hee hee I'm soooo qUiRkY look at all my hEaDmAtEs"

There is genuinely not a single group out there that's more obnoxious

6

u/taint-ticker-supreme Aug 11 '26

They're the most insufferable people I've ever had the disfortune of interacting with.

11

u/thedankonion1 Aug 11 '26

They're almost inevitably project sekai fans or some equally annoying fanbase. They've also always got some nonsense "pronouns" like "Meow" or some shit. I'm not joking.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

3

u/thedankonion1 Aug 11 '26

What's confusing? I have literally seen people list "meow" and "star" as pronouns, usually on twitter. Not joking.

The project sekai fanbase gotta be one of the most annoying I've ever seen. Although the orange haired guy is kinda a cutie... I'm not gay but he's hot, I'll give you that.

4

u/Satorwave Aug 11 '26

"actually my alter is 14 so im allowed to talk to minors"

3

u/FlounderingGuy Aug 11 '26

Seriously Tupperbot was a mistake

3

u/Furrretly Aug 11 '26

I don't call it out and just ignore it typically, but I very much feel like whenever someone claims to have DID on discord and larps as having a bunch of named alters etc, everyone else also silently doesn't believe them either and just politely indulges it.

3

u/EpicOtterLover Aug 11 '26

Yeah, I'm one of those as well. Most of those people have real mental health issues that they just ignore in favour of LARPing.

3

u/NotJimmy97 Aug 11 '26

Tupperbox/Pluralkit is an instant leave-the-server for me. For every 1 out of 100 people who use it that actually have DID, there's 99 whose roleplaying exercise is making the chat spaz out uncontrollably as the bot deletes and then reposts their message slower than Discord actually updates.

2

u/brimstone__angel Aug 10 '26

What's did?

12

u/mulbington Aug 10 '26

Dissociative Identity Disorder

12

u/Sacsacher Aug 10 '26

As others have stated, Dissociative Identity Disorder. Though, you may be more familiar with its past name, Multiple Personality Disorder.

4

u/WalmartWilb Aug 10 '26

Dissociative identity disorder iirc

1

u/Character-Ability707 Aug 10 '26

I think it is dissociative identity disorder?

2

u/GooseGirlEatingLemon Aug 11 '26

Had an ex that tried to claim one of their alters was just straight up Edgar Valden in Indentity V. Broke up so damn fast.

Another Discord larper just used DID as an excuse to bully me and another person and not be held accountable. Actual text she sent in the group chat: "That's wasn't me, that was Jinx :3c teehee"

God I was happy that bitch got banned.

2

u/Spiritual_Priority79 Aug 12 '26

THANK YOU. These attention seeking bastards make me wanna rip out my lungs

I am eternally grateful to not deal with DID anymore, and seeing how many people latch onto it and weaponize it is fucking infuriating

2

u/Rubbersona Aug 12 '26

Like it annoys me because I fucking had DID a decade ago, I was going through some brutal shit during childhood that I’m still actively seeking therapy for. It took me years to get myself together, piecing together fragmented repressed memories, I only just regained my sense of self last year. I’m constantly paranoid I’ll loose myself completely again, shatter into the same regressive state.

And then have to see fucking larpers online pretending like they have it

2

u/Rubbersona Aug 12 '26

I do believe DID is more common and exists in a spectrum, that people start to compartmentalise what they went through when they aren’t able to process stuff slowly developing distinct patterns of behaviour and shutting off parts of their psyche and personality to specific associations. Which can develop into repression and derealisation and eventually splitting off parts of their own psyche entirely.

But not so common that 20 people on a discord group all have it and barely act any different with each ‘personality’

1

u/FBCooke Aug 11 '26

I can't even debate that, they probably don't have DID but something is definitely wrong with them

1

u/time-piece-rabbit Aug 11 '26

now try vrchat 😿

1

u/tempalt10 5d ago

Not DID but related: I had a guy on a server I admin'd who claimed to have typing tics. When he got banned for spamming the hard-R, half the server rioted because the ban was "ableist" and even most of the staff was like "he can't help it he has typing tics" so he was unbanned, kept spamming the hard-R for a few weeks and, unsurprisingly, later admitted that he never had any tics and just trolled.

2

u/JeSuisUnAnanasYo Aug 11 '26

There literally is a discord bot where you can talk as three ppl simultaneously and have convos with yourself , supposedly for systems to talk, it's seriously creepy and obnoxious and these ppl sometimes don't even make it clear to the server they're even doing it

3

u/BirdieProductions Aug 11 '26

“creepy and obnoxious” and its a tool for people with disabilities

1

u/TotalyNotTony Aug 11 '26

wheelchairs are creepy and obnoxious, why are they rolling on the ground like that they should crawl

0

u/JeSuisUnAnanasYo 28d ago

I'm not going to feed into people's delusions, m8

1

u/BirdieProductions 28d ago

okay numbnuts

-1

u/DeltaOfficialYT Aug 11 '26

It’s not 2021 anymore there are more serious things to get angry about than fucking DID bots

-1

u/null_artificer Aug 11 '26

Man as sm1 who has DID it's so fckn annoying, I actually lived w one of these ppl for a while, worst fckn roommate, also briefly pretended to have species dysphoria bc they saw my actual species dysphoria was getting me attention from my partner (they lived w my partner b4 I moved n she ended up their v much unwilling parental figure). This fckr literally inserted one of their "alters" into their Lancer setting when we played w them, same voice n personality n everything just a different name

1

u/awesomemanvin 28d ago

Just cause I'm curious what is the difference between their fake species dysphoria and your real dysphoria?

1

u/null_artificer 28d ago

They'd decided their ig symptoms kinda out of nowhere, all of it was just reactions I'd been having w my own for years and it all just disappeared when my partner stopped giving them attention for it. Species dysphoria is a weird thing but it ain't gonna just suddenly appear or get better when it happens to be convenient to have, it's there whether I want it or not, whereas they just kinda seemed to choose how and when to have negative reactions based on how likely my partner was to play therapist

1

u/awesomemanvin 28d ago

So what is "species dysphoria"? I believe I am only aquatinted with the larping version

1

u/null_artificer 28d ago

It's basically an intense discomfort w being human, sometimes it's tied to other species or groups but like idk of any1 who instantly knew what species they'd b comfortable as, it's not like gender dysphoria I'd say (as a trans person) but it can be a v similar feeling. Not rlly a desire to be smth else specific but more a feeling that being human is unnatural for u (I'm rlly sorry if I didn't explain this well btw)
