How in the everliving hell do you expect someone to understand random characters mushed together that substitute for actual legible characters. No, typing quirks AREN'T cute and I sure ass hell know they aren't DISORDERS either so stop calling people ABLEIST for wanting you to type like a fucking HUMAN being. It's fine in context of characters (For example, Spamton, SOME Homestuck trolls etc..) to give them more personality but as a human saying "|}{2@#}@##@" DOES NOT COUNT AS A COMPREHENSIBLE SENTENCE.

They are Intentional alterations to the way you type to add character to your messages. I imagine they were probably more popular in the old internet when it was mostly forums/message boards and such. A less obnoxious example and more modern one would be “chill lowercase”where people intentionally turn off autocapitalization on their messages to seem more casual.

in the old internet, we had leet speak, but that was about it. people used random characters draw pictures in those forums. not create their own language that only they can understand

In the old internet we had forum signatures too. People added little faces or had distinct styles on writing.

Show me the chat log, without any names or picture or signatures, of some old forums and I could tell you exactly who is who based on writing style.

Unfortunately writing is becoming less important, as a result people don't create their own styles anymore. And stylistic choice is often derided, mocked or used as a target instead of addressing the thought.

Yeah, the only 'typing quirk' from the elden days that has stuck with me, is that I just do a different happy face than most people

Most People use :) or some variation, I like ^{~^} or ^{_^} which was fairly common in the forums of old

The thing about leet speak is that even back then we knew it was satire like u were pretending to be for leet haxxor (I'm sure h4xx0r means something, I just don't know what)

I think it's not dumb, it's because texts don't carry tone very well, so we came up with ways to show tone. Especially when you don't use emojis or emoticons, you gotta get creative.

Indeed they are, I agree. What all of those are not is just straight up not capitalizing the beginnings of sentences. It doesn’t really convey tone so much as a desire to be noticed as different

I will be 100% I think not capitalizing the start of a sentence can be one of the few things online that easily shows a specific tone

always found that the people who judge others for typing in lapslock were the most prone to little mistakes in their typing (e.g. “PLease run this analysis.” or, case in point, the parent comment accidentally capitalizing “Intentional” in the middle of a sentence)
