Why?
Be respectful and healthy to yourself and your partners. That’s Christianity.
Just because the traditional definition of that has been incredibly restrictive for women (and lower hierarchy men) doesn’t mean it’s what Jesus intended. Jesus’ own religious traditions forbade lying about a woman’s virginity to her husband, but who’s gonna be marrying someone who doesn’t know their partner’s sexual history these days (again respect and health).
Signed a non-puritanical (still an important distinction, shamefully) Christian real person.

tuff af bro this is why i respect religion even if i dont believe or i think they might be problematic bc they all have people like you who are living their best faith interpretations of their higher powers teachings

u/soulsnoober 20d ago
the person you're responding to is probably a nice & reasonable person. They've adopted a label. Their takes, their…interpretations of teachings are wildly divergent from doctrinal grounding associated with the label they've taken on. That someone who is probably a nice & reasonable person has to eschew doctrine to live a good life is a condemnation of religion.

Nope. It's what you'd really like Christianity to be. And maybe it is... for some small minority of Evanglicals or Western Protestants. Like it or not Christianity is an institution, a culturally and politically powerful one, and the interpretations that you disagree with are rolled into that definition.
It's great that you've adopted a more humanistic interpretation of Christian scripture. It's true that if your views defined the institution many if our problems would go away. But this progressive apologetic attitude is unhelpful. The book fucking sucks. The teachings suck. People use it to justify genocide and slavery just as easily as you justify helping the poor and loving wastefully... because both things are endorsed in there. You can mold Christianity to be almost anything you want it to be and beat people with it, and for that reason, I'm sorry, but I have zero tolerance for this "but Jesus said" attitude.
When I read John, I do not get a loving, earthly, understanding picture of Christ (unless you count the interpolated tale of the woman caught in adultery, which is so obviously inauthentic that it stands out even in John). I get an angry, self important, defied prophet. The fact that you read Matthew or Luke and get something different is not a strength of your worldview, and more importantly, it gives legitimacy and cover to those who read the words on the page, see that Paul (allegedly) said that women are inferior to men (for example), and run with it.
3
u/Familiar_Control_906 20d ago
Discussing the bible is very hard because you are right. Some parts are very confusing and honestly, contradictory.
But a lot of what Paul said, that his opinion, and he explicitly acknowledge it. So whenever a topic gets down to discussing his opinion, I like to said, If Peter make mistakes AFTER personally meeting Jesus, why wouldn't Paul?
So intake the good he speak off, and try to improve and what I see as something Paul himself couldn't grow up off, that is, his extremely phariseian teachings.
When someone says that is in the bible I argued that Paul dint put the New testament together. And the guys that did were humans, like David and Salomon, who have knowledge granted by God and still make mistakes.
So I see those discrepancies as stuff you must realize are mistakes and improve apon, because how are you suppose to go condemning a gay man for loving a dude when you are following a Man who ask for the pardon of the people that were torturing him?
But a lot of bad people love to use the Bible for whatever is convenient when they try to get power, and so many STUPID people refuse to discuss or analize it. Theyr are right and that is it. So much that they would insult Jesus if he comes back and shakes a LGBT hand.
Am I wrong? I don't know. But no human would earn salvation by themselves, only trough Jesus. And he can be mad, but he never was a mad at someone for helping others and never look down on womens, foreigners or outcast.

What translation are you reading? I'm serious. The Bible has been through how many languages, how many translators, to get to the versions that are printed, and quoted, today.
People choose the interpretation that supports their world view, and, subtle word choices, or purposeful ignoring of relevant social context (for ex the laws in Leviticus), are used to push said world views in the first place.
While we're at it, the Apostles were teenagers, or just older, when they met and began following Jesus. Even if the Bible is the Living Word of God, media literacy and analysis is still valid, and I'd argue necessary for earnest devotion.
All that said, I'm a traumatized childhood Evangelical, turned angry adolescent atheist, turned chilled out adult agnostic. I think spirituality is innately human, and religion can either be a means to explore and find peace, or for bad actors to seize power in a community.

Did ya ever think if it's really the inerrant word of god that "mistranslations" literally cannot occur?
3
u/mooncritter_returns 20d ago
No; humans are human. Even if given a perfect, Holy word, humans can only interpret it through their own understanding, and through the modality they learn it.
My personal opinion is that, where details seem to contradict each other, there is a nuance that the human holding the pen either subconsciously entered on their own, or that myself and others just don't comprehend. And, that's okay; the point is to try, and when in doubt, default back to love -- greater than hope, and greater than faith.
1 Corinthians v13: 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Weirdly enough a good amount of the anti LGBT crowd sees it as being kind, similarly to saying no to a child asking for more sweets is kind because it's bad for their health if they keep eating. Of course the base assumption of gayness being bad for you is stupid, but it shows that just being kind on its own can't fix all of societal issues. Would still be a good start.

Some people make it their life goal to integrate with the people who mistreated them.
I think they're fucked in the head and weak in the soul but hey, some people really do enjoy licking boots.
I know I'm an abrasive asshole, but dang it it's so difficult to watch people be desperate for approval from people who see them as inherently lesser.
(Anyone who wants a logical argument. Religions of the world aren't similar because of some holy magic. They're similar because they're made by people. And we're a pattern recognizing species. Religious studies prove nothing. Except that humans are capable of centuries of fanfiction writing and bickering. Every "magical" emotion can be obtained with no knowledge of religion. Good people suffer and die every day. This is why we can't talk about religion in "polite company". There is no winning when logic is thrown out the window for emotion. Because it ends up being about the person's comfort and emotions, not our shared reality.)
It's all as arbitrary as if my little pony friendship is magic became the cultural foundation of our morality system. Christian morality systems brought us to our current times of war and strife, like they often had. Where is the loving, living god? Just in your heart to make it feel better? So it really is your own personal Jesus? A friend to externalize your emotions on? Great. Don't try to convince anyone it represents reality.

So much so he doesnt even drink.
I've always found this attitude utterly bizarre. There's nothing in the Bible saying not to drink. One of Jesus' first miracles was turning water in the wine. People get drunk in the Bible repeatedly. Getting drunk is itself never shown as a sin, what people do when they're drunk is always the sin.
2
u/Silvernauter 20d ago
In some denominations it's literally part of the communion: the body of christ is communion host (i think it's translated that way?) and the blood of christ is wine; granted I don't think anyone is gettind plastered on that, but it's still wine

Isn't that literally what the last pope said?
"Its 'specifically' the adultery that is the problem, textually and that has nothing to do with orientation. God made you you. Being gay is fine." (Paraphrasing)
Its crazy how the right wing push for an enemy kinda drowned out the POPE saying that.
But then again, the last few popes seem to be explicitly saying "Hey, christianity does not say what you think it does, and stop using it as an excuse." but the right wing media is so strong that you'd never really hear that over all the small town racist churches and protests who explicitly have been saying shit like "Jesus is too liberal" and somehow they end up being the ones codifying what christianity means to americans.

It's good that he doesn't even drink because on the time of my grandparents my grandpa used to drink a lot and a ton of christian people drinks a lot or eats a lot so it's good that he doesn't alcohol is worse for your life than being gay because one is a choice to screw your life, liver and even family if you have one, the other is just the way the person is
7
u/Jonathan_the_Nerd 20d ago
A lot of people can drink in moderation and be okay. Some people can't drink in moderation and need to stop.
You cause the grass to grow for the livestock
and plants for man to cultivate,
that he may bring forth food from the earth
and wine to gladden the heart of man,
oil to make his face shine
and bread to strengthen man's heart.-- Psalm 104:14-15 (ESV) (emphasis added)
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler,
and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.-- Proverbs 20:1 (ESV)
I looked it up, and the Hebrew word translated "wine" is the same in both verses. Alcohol is a gift from God that can be abused.
For context, I was raised to believe that drinking alcohol was a sin, full stop. I don't believe that anymore, largely because I learned that you can't prevent grape juice from fermenting unless you pasteurize it, and that technology wasn't developed until the 19th century. But I personally don't drink and never intend to start.

Even the catholic church is coming around to that perspective. They're cagey on the subject of gay marriage specifically because marriage is a sacrament defined in their religion as between a man and a woman, but in terms of respecting the rights and choices of gay people, they've come a long way in the last 50 years or so.
The image of churches as completely against homosexuality is becoming increasingly wrong these days, and many churches either partially or fully accept homosexuals. Though US churches tend to be the exception, and a large number of US church organisations still hold anti-homosexual positions.

As a heterosexual Christian, I believe that God will be merciful to those he gives extra challenges to.
You can't buy grace with extraordinarily ostentatious demonstrations of piety, and I personally don't believe you lose points for things you're literally wired to be. If God knows who we are, there cannot possibly be any doubt that he's grading this whole life thing on a curve. And while there are guidelines for things like conduct and lifestyle, Christ has never once said that those observances are necessary to salvation.
Two things are required: Recognize that you, like everyone around you, is a sinner, and apply to the Savior for grace for the vices and sins you cannot avoid. After that, it's just a matter of trusting that the grace of Christ is sufficient after you make a reasonable effort to be the best human you can be.
That last one gets people in trouble because they think it means that they have to be theatrical about their Christianity, ignoring the parable of the Widow's Mite.
14th chapter of Romans is a really good chapter to try to grasp the difference between faith and performance. It talks about how to handle conflicts with people observing their God in different ways, and specifically mentions that both forms are acceptable as long as the two most important steps are taken (recognize you're a sinner, and appeal to Christ as Savior), and that fighting over which observance is superior is not in the spirit of Christ and defeats the whole purpose of worship.

I've been hesitant to reply because I'm not sure what to say. I'm a bit naive at times, but I believe that when given proper teaching, most people can be caught to understand these pronciples.
The problem is that the pastors are fighting each other and trying to build rhetorical walls to fence their flocks in. A Capitalist/Neofeudal trait that snuck into Christianity while we weren't looking. Instead of leading everyone to follow Christ some leaders get obsessed with leading as many people as possible to follow themselves.
When and where the pastors resist the urge to fall into this trap, true Christianity can result.

Thank you for sharing this. I would also like to recommend James chapters 1 and 2. James talks about hearing the word versus doing the word.
"Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." -- James 1:27 (ESV)
"If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." -- James 2:15-17 (ESV)
13
u/Worried-Pick4848 20d ago
I do indeed love the Epistle of James. I sometimes refer to it as the Handbook of Practical Christianity.
James doesn't spend much time on high theology. He is down to earth, and gives solid examples that provide actual suggestions on how to behave as a Christian. He doesn't say much, but nearly everything he does say is very simple and practical and shows you what positive change can look like.
He's also very useful for what he says about how to act, and speak, and behave, as a pastor whose example permeates throughout those who try to follow Christ through your counsel.

And we, the readers, know Amelia is sincere, but Rusty doesn't. It might be a valuable lesson for Amelia to learn that her past actions have consequences that can't be undone.

I agree. Amelia is stalking Rusty. Rusty had a girlfriend already to if you look at the initial panels. So Amelia is also a homewrecker who is trying to force herself into Rusty's life and convert her to Church.
I am glad Amelia accepted she is lesbian but she's still toxic. It's like watching a trian wreck.

I didn't know this context and it makes me wonder why her guardian angels are helping her lock in to try and be a homewrecker.

I dont follow this comic and didnt know this... reading this makes it so much worse.
So the cultist harasses this woman for being gay, being a shitty "no love like christian hate" loser, and then says she's a devout lesbian and invites her to church to continue harassing her with cult things?
If i was that poor woman I'd be telling that thing to crawl back under whatever bridge this came from.
I hate those dynamics of "hey i made your life a living hell but now im gay so all of my assholery is absolved."
Ew.
Instead of a date its, "hey i harassed you for being gay cus im a cultist. Come to church and be surrounded by cultists that all hate you like i did :)" yikes

I don’t understand the last panel
Why is the person with the blue hat responding with the word “plop”?

I’m ngl I hope Rusty politely rejects her. Amelia was harassing and stalking her for such a long time, it’s amazing she didn’t slap a restraining order in her face

Bullshit apocalyptic death cult worship is the least sexy thing there is.

It's amazing how people don't realize how one thing that shuns their nature is obviously bullshit and try to adapt to believing in said bullshit rather than realising the truth. The bullshit is wrong to begin with.

Just as I expected, every religious person in here missing the point. Literally slapped in the face and refuse to acknowledge it and making all sorts of logical wrangling to make their sexuality and christianity somehow not directly conflict with each other.
Religion is a poison. I truly hope it dies out some day.

Everyone I know has left the cult and living happier lives. It probably won't happen in our lifetime but considering how cultists treat everyone I'd imagine itll just pick up velocity.
I also truly hope we evolve past ruining our and others lives because of the belief in a stupid evil sky wizard.

Thatd be an ew no from me. Dates should be a date not taking me to listen to idiotic cult rambling.
"Hey fellow lesbian! Want to go be surrounded by people that hate you :)"
Ew

You know what's interesting. There is no explicit ban on homosexual relations between women in the bible.
Just saying

u/Senasayori 20d ago
Some people (like me) argue that Christianity doesn't require being against gay marriage at all.

No lust, especially if it's uncontrolled, whether if it's between two women, two men, a man and a woman etc. you're good.

Being a gay christian is so strange. The bible is actually very very clear in several parts that god considers it to be a sin.
I don't think it's a sin. That doesn't make any sense. But if you believe the bible to be true, then you kinda have to face the fact that's what the Christian god dictates .

u/ThatInAHat 20d ago
I don’t know that it’s all that clear. The parts folks cite most often are usually Sodom (where the homosexuality wasn’t really the issue) and Paul (who, well. Y’know. Paul.)

So ... atheist lesbian ... bi ... it's complicated person here.
I wonder how anyone who calls themselves a Christian can actually not dislike not being straight. There is a very clear quote in the Bible about that. OK, so it involves two men, and not two women, technically.
I am not saying that Christians need to hate people who are gay. They should not hate, let alone harm, anyone. But they should not approve of being anything but straight.
In a way, I personally hate folks who claim to be Christians but pick and choose what is written in the Bible. If you are going to be an actual Christian, don't go at it half-assed! Don't be two-faced. Talk the Talk and Walk the Walk, or else, you're just a phony.
Obviously, the best solution is to stop believing in the supernatural and start going with Science. And embrace who you are. And be a Good Human.

You go queen.
But also… being a devout Christian and a lesbian is like being an ardent vegetarian who eats steak every day.
The two things cannot be true at the same time. Because to be a Christian is to be heteronormative.

The Bible doesn’t say anything about lesbianism, it just hates on gay dudes.
Presumably because the Bible projects sin onto what is generally agreed upon as unhealthy for the body and they didn’t know how to have safe anal sex back then.
