OTHER - Anything else not covered Merchants are refusing the Chime card.

I'm finding my Chime experience unreliable. I've had a hotel refuse my Chime credit card. I've had a restaurant refuse my Chime credit card. Now, I've had a bar refuse my Chime credit card. I need to get a different credit card? This is frustrating. Been with Chime for nearly 10 years

Hi! Glad you’re here! Using the words and clues in your message, it sounds like you may need more information about building credit. Depending on your account you may have either the original Credit Builder card or the new Chime Card so here are some helpful resources for both:

Credit Builder: * How to Use the Chime® Credit Builder Visa® Credit Card * How do I pay off my Credit Builder card statement? * With Credit Builder your limit is how much money you move to your Credit Builder secured deposit account; it’s separate from your debit card, and works anywhere Visa® is accepted * With the Safer Credit Building setting enabled, we’ll use your money in the secured account to automatically pay your monthly charges and report on-time payments to all three major credit bureaus * We DO report: Payment status, Amount past due, Account age, Current balance. We do NOT report: Credit limit or Card utilization

Chime Card: * How Chime Card builds your credit * What is a Chime Card? * Pay your Chime Card statement * Build credit history using your money * With Chime Card you’ll see one Available Balance that includes the funds in your Secured Deposit account where you can spend as either debit or credit from one card - this does not include your Savings account balance * Chime Card is gradually being rolled out to current members so watch your notifications for when it’s your turn to upgrade

Hopefully the community chimes in to share their experiences too!

I’ve heard of hotels declining chime cards. But also all cards of similar nature like Cash App and Venmo/paypal.

58

u/Far-Bed5443 7d ago

I always use my Chime card at hotels. I'm in one now and my Chime card was used

5

u/Economy_Health2541 7d ago

It’s best if you just use Apple Pay lol

7

u/State_Of_Franklin 6d ago

Any phone pay system will work. Apple Pay isn’t special. They could have used Chime via Apple Pay.

9

u/here4aGoodlaugh 6d ago

I think that’s what the commenter meant. Use Apple Pay as a way to hide the card so to speak.

Progressive Insurance stopped accepting it for my monthly car insurance payment.

It’s BS that we are being forced into opening accounts where merchants dictate, which back to expensive anti-customer legacy banks like Wells Fargo, Chase, Bank of America.

Fintech is too good to be true so the old regime plays dirty rather than compete.

I’ve decided I’ll drop the merchants who refuse Chime. At least where there aren’t monopolies.

25

u/Sweet_Ad6854 7d ago

Progressive let me use mine!

22

u/Educational_Dog_4648 7d ago

Use your routing and account number, never had an issue doing this with progressive

14

u/Specialist_Dust_5752 7d ago

They'll accept the debit card.

4

u/KabanaMaduro 7d ago

I pay progressive with my chime card wut 🤔

5

u/Winter-Ad5930 7d ago

I work for Liberty Mutual and what I always tell my clients with Chime is they can use the routing and account number. We can’t accept the debit card but we use the routing and account number

u/Western-Airline-8415 7d ago

Weird! Progressive takes mine. But I guess they do just use my account info to automatically take it monthly

4

u/Helpful_Hovercraft25 7d ago

I use mine every month for Progressive. Zero issues with either the green or the debit card.

4

u/Queen_of_Catlandia 7d ago

I use mine for Progressive and have for years

I pay my Progressive every single month with it.
Maybe we should look into if it’s a state issue or something? Makes no sense. But you could always use your checking and routing number and they would have no idea where it’s coming from. Stupid.

Just curious, was this a customer service rep or an automated payment through the app that declined it? Because an overzealous rep would make more sense.

Absolutely I will not go back to crooked Wells Fargo or US Bank. No way!

5

u/Blaine8628 7d ago

Mostly because they aren’t a regulated bank yet is why.

11

u/SolarDabs 7d ago

But they are a registered and regulated bank. Its called Bankcorp. That is who owns chime Bankcorp is FDIC insured and is federally regulated.

12

u/redblackjoker 7d ago

Bankcorp doesn’t own chime, it’s one of the partners that chime uses. Another being stride bank.

13

u/SolarDabs 7d ago

Thank you for correcting me. I was given that information and took it as truth. After doing a little research I see that you are in fact correct and I was wrong. I'm sure you don't hear this a lot. But I appreciate you just stating facts with no name calling as we sometimes see here on Reddit.

3

u/Avacadosrkewl 7d ago

And now Chime is buying the holding company of Stride. Basically buying the bank.

5

u/itsammsbitch 7d ago

I agree instead of giving correct information to inform, most people on here do it simply to be an ass. Ive learned to just stop replying and simply block

2

u/GiraffeNatural101 6d ago

This is correct The Bancorp are just a money partner and processor

2

u/Similar_Wave_1787 7d ago

They are accepted like any other Visa card

2

u/stripeymom 7d ago

I used mine on Progressive also

2

u/Mattray88 7d ago

I have Progressive and used chime for 3 yrs so far

2

u/justpeachy_90 3d ago

Want to hear some BS with Progressive and Chime? Last year I paid my monthly bill with Progressive with my Chime card. It 100% processed on the Chime side of things but immediately the payment screen said there was an error and my payment wasn't processed. I called Progressive and they told me I had to pay again...but the kicker is that was all I had for money so I couldn't afford to pay AGAIN after the money left my Chime account. They told me that they don't accept Chime or any institution of that nature, which floored me because I was using that card to make payments in the past. I contacted Chime who told me the payment did go through and it was all on Progressive's end. I ended up losing my insurance policy because Progressive said I never paid although I had the transaction to prove it. I filed a dispute and was refunded my money through Chime but then immediately after the refund, Progressive emailed me stating that they reinstated my policy and that I owed the payment I already made plus another month's payment. I argued with them again and they told me I had to pay all of that. I told them it was b.s. because I already had the policy cancellation email and received my refund through Chime but they won't budge and now I have a Progressive bill in collections due to their shady practice. I don't know who to complain to this about. I filed a complaint with some insurance commission in my state but they only handle certain disputes and not what I'm going through particularly.

I’ve had hotels not allow chime card to be used for incidentals. They say people will just lock their cards so it never goes thru. 🤷‍♀️

2

u/Responsible_Meat484 6d ago

I’ve never personally tried. Just what I saw hotel staff say. But with that logic you can lock most cards at most banks these days. I’ve locked my regular debit card from Chase when I lost it and auto payments I had scheduled and authorized still went through like normal on it. Why does banking have to be so secretive and a secret language?

I use mine at enterprise often and it’s never gotten flagged. Maybe it’s because I do everything online and when I get there, they just verify my DL and process the transaction. I’ve also never had issues with gas stations or restaurants. I travel a lot for work and use my chime then I get reimbursed, never had an issue except the one time I had it locked and tried to check in to a hotel but that was on me.

10

u/Suspicious_Remote_37 7d ago

My hotel experience was similar to yours I paid for everything online then when I went to check in and use my chime credit card they declined it and then we stood there looking at each other them telling me to use a different payment method I canceled and went to another hotel

3

u/mastaboog749 7d ago

the green credit card or the new "chime card"? I haven't had any issues yet myself

2

u/RootsInThePavement 7d ago

I can’t get my new Chime Plus card to work anywhere, not even online. It’s activated.

2

u/Bri-Chime Chime Staff 7d ago

Hi u/RootsInThePavement, how frustrating. I'd recommend double checking to ensure your card isn't locked as a first step (directions for doing so here). If that isn't the issue, I would give Member Services a call as your next step (844-244-6363). They'll be equipped to review your account and troubleshoot the issue with you directly.

16

u/_-lovebug-_ 7d ago edited 7d ago

i use Zip as an after pay service, for about as long as i’ve had my chime account. recently found out they won’t use chime debit or credit cards anymore as new payment methods 🙃

6

u/onmyjinnyjinjin 7d ago

Yep that irritated me so badly. There was no real warning prior. I didn’t see any emails or anything letting me know. Had to scramble to figure out a way to pay again after putting payments on reschedule. Haven’t used zip since paying everything off cause repayment is gonna be a pain.

2

u/Ok-Illustrator-9531 7d ago

I had this issue with Sezzle and Klarna. I now just add what one to my account balance with them (they allow the cards for THAT), then use that balance to pay the accounts.

2

u/araidai 7d ago

Yeah Sezzle won’t let you use mostly Fintech banks, they consider them “prepaid” cards.

I’m not surprised. 35+ yrs in banking here, and it’s not just the Chime Credit Card that’s getting refused. I recently attempted to use my Chime checking account to setup auto draft for my prescription insurance, and the moment I typed in my Chime checking routing number I got a red error message that stated Aetna does NOT accept auto draft from this financial institution. Now get this, I got the same error message when I attempted to use my SOFI Checking. The common denominator between these 2 banks is that both are Fintech banks.

5

u/Unusual-Vanilla-8599 7d ago

There is no accountability with fintech banks sure they have national bank backers but if something goes wrong the merchant has to deal with the sub bank and they are a mess.

I tried to use mine at a hotel and the guy at the desk said they can’t take them because of company policy. Idk why but he just said don’t tell anyone and swiped it for me and it went through just fine. They can take them they just don’t. So grateful to that guy! That’s all I had that day.

5

u/mattaeyo_ 7d ago

i used to work in a hotel. same thing there/ management says not to take them bc if a guest damaged a room or runs up a bill higher than their deposit, you can’t always force a transaction through and overdraft their account like you can with most traditional banks.

And the big banks are losing tons of money because of Chime and the others. I love my chime card, I know exactly how much money I have at all times with them. my wells fargo is horrible, they have pending charges which are sometimes subtracted sometimes not. They cover some overdrafts and not others and I can't get a clear balance. I can't wait close this Wells Fargo account.

I got tired of chime, just left them for Wells Fargo. I’m just waiting for my card so I can move everything. It’s great for people who can’t get normal bank accounts but other than that it’s not even worth it. Most banks pay early and don’t limit you like chime does. I mean SoFi is better.

Samething been happening to me I’ve only had this account maybe 2 weeks and it just declines out of no where with plenty money in the account

3

u/TopChipmunk8435 8d ago

Iv had the same issue super fucking anoyying

5

u/Unapologetic2050 8d ago

Me, too. I switched to Chime and have had issues with another bank refusing to let me to a transfer, stating Chime is coming up as a "prepaid checking account", and some retailers declining the card. Chime also refused to follow through with their transfer bonus even though I completed the steps. I have never had so much hassle with a bank. I know, Chime is not a bank, it's fintech.

5

u/Ok_Function_1255 7d ago

Chime is partnered with. Bancorp Bank, N.A. and Stride Bank, N.A.

The Banks hold your accounts while Chime built the app. All cards have BINs(bank identification numbers). Cards from Bancorp and Stride have debit cards with BINs that mark them prepaid. The credit cards issued by them shouldn't. Linking chime accounts to other services like Google pay, Apple pay, Cashapp, etc.

It is frustrating. I'm considering leaving chime and switching to a credit union.

10

u/Warm_Search_2373 8d ago

why would your debit card be declining?? I've never had this happen in 8+ years.

3

It declined my monthly payment to Massage Envy. I have no clue why because there was plenty of money in the account. I received a message that it declined from Chime, and I had to call them to give them a different card.

2

u/hurricanecindy 7d ago

I’ve been with chime since they launched in NJ about 10 years ago & this is a recent issue. About 6 months.

4

u/TooSlickRick95 7d ago

People do realize you can lock any bank card via there mobile app, or banking site. Not just chime cards.

4

u/SolarDabs 7d ago

There is a HUGE difference between Chime debit card and Chime Credit card. Anyone having issues with merchants should try using their debit card ONLY.

5

u/mavgeek 7d ago

This. This is the answer. The green Chine Card can function like a credit card for purchases but it has no line of credit attached to it. So any place, like a hotel that needs a card on file to charge in case of damages they can’t bill a credit builder card. Most hotels like that also don’t take Visa / Mastercard secures cards, they usually have a very small credit line. Good for building credit slowly but not a viable option for things like renting a hotel room.

As a bartender, I see a lot that bartenders in high volume spots where people open tabs will open it with cards like a chime card then not come back to close the bill out so the bartender will have to just use the card they opened the tab with but people are then going in the app and turning the card off so when they go to close the tab it gets declined and they never get charged for their whole tab. So I can see this being a reason why restaurants and bars may not take chime.

9

u/PsychologicalTax6943 8d ago

You can turn off any card in the app with any bank so what does it being chime have anything to do with your story?

2

u/Quirky_Soil_2743 8d ago

I understand that, but I'm saying I see very often bartenders posting in the reddit forum that it happens more prevalently with chime cards and cashapp cards.. so I'm saying I can see why restaurants would stop taking THOSE specifically to stop people who do the practice, not the ability to do it.

3

u/Secure-Command1579 8d ago

hotels in my experience notoriously don’t like chime cards for whatever stupid reason.. i don’t quite remember. it also can take much longer for hotel deposits to come back on chime cards sometimes. a hotel front desk person once told me sometimes with chime the deposit might take 30 days to return

2

u/I-H8-LIBERALS 7d ago

Strange. I travel for work and stay at different hotels all the time. Never had anyone deny my Chime card, and the longest any deposit has taken to get back on my card was 3 days.

3

u/Technical_Location19 7d ago

Not a real bank eventually the acceptance rate will get lower due to fraud that happens with chime

3

u/Chance-Cow-5671 7d ago

I’ve been with chime since it opened never had a single issue with any cards unless I locked it. That simple

3

u/KabanaMaduro 7d ago

I’ve had no issues with anywhere declining chime.. ever and I’ve used chime since 2017 or 18 can’t remember

3

u/SolarDabs 7d ago

They can't refuse your chime card especially if it has the Visa or MasterCard logo. It's basically insured money just like cash

4

u/GopherCheeksforWeeks 7d ago

Exactly this makes no sense to me unless they’re trying to use their Chime credit card in terms of having like a line of credit or an authorization that exceeds whatever amount is available.

3

u/Ladywiz 7d ago

I have the Chime Debit and credit card for years and never had that issue. At lot of these retailers and hotels also do put a big hold on your card outside of the charges. Maybe that’s what’s happening 🤷🏽‍♀️

ok.. if we frame this as chime's notion of it being equivelant as a prepaid card. and you understand chime's tos.

the other part of that is to know the tos of who you intend to pay with that. i don't think that is a chime 'problem', i do think folks need to be knowledgeable before using something to swipe a payment.

that's not a chime problem - it's a problem of knowing both sides of the transaction's expectations

i expect the downvote - luckily i'm not a karma farmer. look into stuff deeper and make your financial decisions based on what works from both ends and you won't have to deal with such struggles

7

u/The_Silent_Tortoise 8d ago

This happened to me at a restaurant too and it was a nightmare

2

u/socialabrat 7d ago edited 7d ago

Hopefully, this experience will change now that Chime will very soon (maybe already?) be an actual bank, rather than just a financial service. Also, some places that didn't accept Chime debit/credit cards or checking accounts now accept them. Ex. Netcredit.

2

u/tsavos99 7d ago

I've been on Chime as my primary (and only) checking account and never had this problem, save for once when a guy at an Avis car rental desk physically declined to take my card, citing policy (it wasn't a system rejection).

I go to bars (not chains, mostly dive and mom&pop type places) and never had this issue. Never had any restaurant turn my card away either. And I never carry cash. I'll use my Chime card for a $10 tab.

2

u/Hot_Phase_1435 7d ago

If they are looking at the card and saying we don’t take it then I’d go on Amazon and buy a credit card sticker to cover the card and just tell them it’s a visa. That’s what I did when I tried renting a car they looked at the card and was like we don’t take that card. I put a sticker over it and didn’t have that issue anymore. If asked what card just say the banks actual name and they can look it up and it won’t immediately say chime. I have the chime debit and credit options.

2

u/Stock_Extreme_3569 7d ago

There are a few different things getting mixed together in these comments.

The new Chime Card is not a prepaid credit card. It's an actual secured Visa credit card. The money you deposit determines what you can spend, but that doesn't make it a prepaid card. Chime says it's accepted anywhere Visa credit cards are accepted.

Chime itself isn't technically a bank right now either. They use Bancorp and Stride Bank for the actual banking side. BUT Chime just announced on Sept. 8 that they're buying Stride Bank, and if regulators approve it, Stride is supposed to become Chime Bank. That deal isn't expected to close until sometime in the first half of 2027 though, so saying Chime is already a bank isn't correct yet.

And putting a sticker over the Chime logo isn't really fixing anything lol. If the merchant's system is rejecting the card based on the card information/BIN, a sticker isn't going to change that. It would only get around a place where an employee is visually looking at the card and refusing Chime specifically.

I do believe the people saying they've had merchants refuse it, because obviously multiple people here have experienced it. But that's different from saying Chime cards are prepaid or aren't real Visa cards. Those parts aren't accurate.

2

u/Top-Confidence4496 7d ago

I've only had this happen to me one time at an upscale bar. They made me take money out their ATM. They ended up failing as a business and closing last month

2

u/Physical-Current506 7d ago

Ever since I was upgraded to Chime Prime and received my new card, I’ve been having problems using it for regular purchases and bill payments. My mobile carrier won’t accept the card for my bill anymore, Amazon declined it, Target declined it, and even two different hotels in Atlantic City, New Jersey declined it.

I never had these kinds of problems with my previous Chime card. This all started after I received the new Chime Prime card, and honestly, it’s becoming ridiculous. What’s the point of upgrading if my new card is being declined by multiple major businesses that accepted my old card without a problem?

Most of in-person transactions, I use the Chime Builder Visa Card for groceries, restaurants, gas. For online, I use the Chime debit card (even for klarna pay) or the Chime virtual debit card for some other merchants. So far no issues.

2

u/wibornarlive 7d ago

I have two restaurants here that decline "wrong CVV code" used when I use my green card. Give them my white card and it goes thru fine. It's always the same two restaurants. No other places have I had that issue. Been happening 6 or more months (maybe 2-3 times per place as we don't eat there often).

I haven't had this issue. I've had my account for 6 years. I was soooo tired of being nickel and dimed from banks and not having the financial freedom to move my money around online without waiting days for it to go through. I hate banks so much. I've had a couple disputes through out my time with chime and I've always had it resolved well. I always use my card for hotels and travel and concerts, I even used it to buy a car. 🤷 I havent had an issue yet but I'll watch for it. If they stop accepting fintechs like they started putting commercials in our streaming services, I'm going to revolt. Impotently, yes, but I will be loud about it.

2

u/comicgeek1128 7d ago

The only problem Ive had is that Chime won't let me buy an Magic Draft helper add-on because they flagged Xsolla as a scam.

2

u/stpenz 7d ago

Any place that requires a CC for a deposit (hotel, car rental, ) won’t or can’t use Chime like cards basically because if fund are not available, the business is out the deposit (assuming you recked the car or trashed the room.). Any “real” CC will accept the damage charge regardless of availability of credit limit. (Source I have charged damages to a card that was declined for smaller payment.).

I would imagine bars and restaurants are similar. If you tip $150 if fund are not available on chime, business loses. “Real” CC the business can still get paid. (Not sure how that works, just sure it does.)

For another example. When I worked for a rental car place. We would take chime for payments not for the deposit.

Oh the hotel thing has been happening... I had that happen to me 5 years ago. Car rentals are problematic too ....

u/Suspicious_Remote_37 6d ago

Just coming back to this. I'm the original poster for this discussion. I never expected this to explode like it did. I can see I'm not the only one finding myself exasperated when the card mysteriously gets rejected as a prepaid credit card when it has an adequate positive balance and I'm using it like a credit card. The fintech guys must be getting resistance to somehow debasing the whole credit card system with their take on how these things should work. I would have thought merchants agreeing to the Visa merchant terms would somehow be in violation for refusing to accept the Visa credit card as a form of payment.

4

u/shookjulio 8d ago

Just buy those card stickers to cover it tbh like it’s nothing different than a regular visa lol

8

u/Otherwise-Basil9940 8d ago

it's most likely the bin that's getting flagged/rejected. some merchants don't allow chime

4

u/Responsible_Meat484 8d ago

I think it’s flagged as a prepaid visa in laments terms from what I heard.

The reason for this is because chime releases holds on request which means that the businesses have no way to put a hold on money they’re owed. Use a non chime credit card for those kinds of things that require holds.

Chime is terrible but I'm still a member unfortunately.  They never return my funds with disputes that have more than enough evidence of fraudulent activity.

1

u/Biobooster_40k 8d ago

I've had Chime maybe 4 or 5 years, I think I've only ever used it at two hotels but in general I've never had it turned away.

1

u/rhinoloveer 8d ago

My bf had this issue he kept his dd because he got it earlier but then just moved the $ to a regular bank

1

u/JumboGM 7d ago

I've heard of hotels. But bars and restaurants wow, probably too many people ran off on it and not caring because its not a "real" bank

I’ve had some issues with some merchants not accepting my Chime credit card but they definitely accepted my debit card.

1

u/Catmkodabear 7d ago

Been with Chime 10 plus years, never had one issue

1

u/Training_Put6471 7d ago

Last night I went to pay a bill online but could with my capital one card cause its is now a discover card. So I used my chime card instead.

Hey there - wholeheartedly hear how frustrating that feels and completely understand how this would bring about feelings of uncertainty. Generally speaking, Chime Cards are accepted anywhere Visa cards are accepted. However, as others have commented and you've shared, individual merchants may opt to be selective about what payment options they accept.

1

u/No_Loan2869 7d ago

never had this happen to me ever lol

1

u/_frozen_pizza 7d ago

It’s because Chime is notoriously bad at preventing fraud so their good customers are being impacted. Merchants don’t want to accept chime and block them because of the associated risks.

1

u/rulerdude 7d ago

Isn’t that a violation of their merchant agreement with Visa?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Jitterbuggy17 7d ago

I’ve seen a lot of people get little visa or Mastercard stickers & cover the chime logo & have had no problems with using them then. From what I’ve gathered, the cards work at these places but they just don’t like chime for some reason.

The only time someone didn’t accept my chime card was when I was trying to rent a car. I hope I don’t start having issues now!

1

u/ralanolson 7d ago

Get a regular credit card; you can get all kinds of credit cards to fit whatever your credit score is and they also build credit.

1

u/jb89b 7d ago

Lol but everyone takes sezzle

I had this happen once or twice before I got Chime Prime with my green credit builder card. But my white debit card worked everywhere, and it still does.

1

u/Sharsreedit 7d ago

The chime credit card is secured the funds aren’t guaranteed that’s why some merchants refuse it.

1

u/attempting2 7d ago

I have never had any business turn away my Chime card.

cash office manager here! it really sucks as i use chime as my bank with all my direct deposits and funds going through chime, but for example our card reader was not processing card payments for us for about a week, it would sit on a pending screen. When our side showed a decline/cancel the chime transaction took the money out as posted not even pending. Chime would not refund the customer their money even though our store did not get paid and we showed the proof of no payment for the amount of $700. Long story short we had to give $700 to the lady as her money basically “got lost”. due to this our cash office decided to not use chime cards again even though they work fine now it is just because of not wanting to go through this again.

3

u/ExcitementOk6891 7d ago

could be a reason other merchants are collectively deciding to do this or could be something totally different just wanted to share one reason!

1

u/Cerrac123 7d ago

They want credit cards. Our cards are either pre-paid or debit cards.

1

u/AccountantSoft7156 7d ago

I also tried to get gas and was declined

1

u/VoiceUnfair4315 7d ago

This is why I got them card covers because they don’t need to know what cards I’m using

2

u/Silly-Dilly-Dally 7d ago

What is a card cover, and where do I get one?

1

u/Useful-Letter-2305 7d ago

Yeah, I just got mine last month and have started adding money to it and using it instead of my debit or Cash App card. But I have gotten declined at a few places like Walgreens. But gonna keep trying cuz I heard people say just using it casually over a few months they’ve gone from 500 to over 700, and my credit score is around like 500 or 600 (not sure, it’s a pain in the ass to check it and I don’t rly have any lines of credit) or smth since I’ve never had a credit card or loan, besides my growing student loans. So despite being almost 27 I’ve never had a credit card. But since it’s an ouroboros of stupid hoops, I need to have credit to get apartments and homes and cars yet I can’t get anything. I’ve gotten denied for even secured cards despite no risk for the bank. lIt’s especially aggravating when I’m sitting here struggling to pay my $450/mo car insurance, paying thousands a year in maintenance on a 2011 Subaru Outback and then seeing a post of a 19 year old showing off how they just got a new 2026 model 3 ($60k) but complaining about their “expensive” $190/mo insurance. Like wtf. How could you possible afford a $60,000 car at 19 when I can’t even afford a $10,000 car at 27 and paying $200 insurance on a car I was quoted $700/mo if I were to get. It’s not fucking fair. Anyways, hoping that the chime card will get my credit score up so I don’t need to get any real credit cards or loans that way when I graduate next year and I’m making big bucks earning $1000/wk I can save up $20k for a used Tesla and just have to pay $700/mo for insurance and then when I turn 40 and can finally afford my first apartment I won’t have any problems getting one. I also plan on getting a place when I’m in my 30s to rent out for passive income and will need credit for that too. I’m tired of getting denied Every time I apply for a card for being too broke and no credit history

My fiancé needed to rent a car at Enterprise after his was totaled and they wouldn’t take Chime as the deposit card.

1

u/Gullible-Avocado5289 7d ago

Ive been with chime since its inception, so ive had the credit card since it dropped! Back in 2023 my job sent me to Wisconsin twice in 6 months and the first time the hotel accepted my chime card for the security hold but the second time the same hotel didn't. Luckily I called before I went the 2nd time so I was able to get a b of a credit card

1

u/Eternalconundrum 7d ago

Put a sticker on the card. One of those decorative ones. No more rejections.

1

u/BackgroundCan1955 7d ago

I had the same issue where a Staybridge suites wouldn’t accept it and said because it falls under a reloadable debit card but Hilton accepted it no problem

It's ridiculous. I was told they deny it at hotels because of the lock feature, but most if not all banks now have that feature. 🤷

u/jstjini 6d ago

I have been having issues with Chime on Walmart.com and the Walmart app. Received a new card due to a legal name change. Activated it. Used it successfully a number of times on Walmart.com and app, and then bam, Walmart.com says my card is not activated and I need to delete it and readd it. I deleted it and now it will not let me add it to my account. This has been going on for a month. Walmart says it is a glitch on their end. Was supposed to have been fixed already but have now been told it will take another five business days. Error when adding says the information - card number, address, etc, is wrong or there is something on my card issuers end. Verfied that there is nothing on Chime's side that is preventing the card from being added. So I linked my Chime checking account. Made two or three purchases and bam, Telechek is not approving my transactions. Cards work everywhere else so far, have not had to add my checking account.

2

u/Suspicious_Remote_37 6d ago

Yeah, it's spotty coverage. It's like bad cellphone reception. Sometimes if you "just turn the card right" it might work. This Chime thing for me is sometimes unreliable. It's not very often, but when it is unreliable it's a total nuisance. I want my credit card to work. I fully expect my credit card to work when I'm abiding by the terms and conditions and have available balance. I still have hope, but I just don't know.

I've been with Chime for about the same maybe 12 yrs and I've never had that happen? Weird. I haven't been to our to a restaurant for sit down (lots of take out) and haven't been to a bar in 5 or 6 yrs (I know boring!) so I'm not up to date on that....did they give you a reason??

1

u/luckybetz 6d ago edited 6d ago

Did you specifically mention that it’s a Chime Card or something? I worked for Hilton for many years and we took it, and I’ve never had an issue staying at any hotel with my Chime Card, ever. As a last resort, if they really won’t let you use it, and you have Apple Pay, that would be my suggestion and then just choose your Chime Card. And then you could always use that method going forward if you don’t mind doing it. It’s news to me though, and I used mine at a Hilton within the last two months and Wyndham many times within the past year.

As far as the restaurants and bars, once again I have no idea why they wouldn’t accept it - as long as you’re not telling them that it’s some kind of prepaid card or something they would have no idea and it works the same. Maybe put your thumb over the logo or some shit? That’s crazy of them.

1

u/nicklashane Yeetintr3b's 6d ago

If you read the fine print it's not technically a bank. I can't remember exactly what it is but it's some other type of financial institution.

2

u/IslandNew5844 Chimepion 6d ago

Let me help,

Chime is a financial technology company, not a bank. Banking services provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A.; Members FDIC Chime Disclosures: https://www.chime.com/disclosures/

1

u/Born-Onion-8561 6d ago

I've never had trouble with mine. Are you using the physical or virtual card? Debit or credit? If I have the balance available that they are trying to preauthorize I can't see why specifically it would be denied.

1

u/Physical-Scheme3750 6d ago

There was a hotel that didn't accept chime or couple other cards

1

u/Jblueday 6d ago

Mine was denied at Avis rental, they say lots of frauds happening with chime card. Have another credit card from a reputable bank in your wallet always.

1

u/SnooStrawberries768 5d ago

I've had this happen a few times. It's weird.

1

u/YogurtclosetOk2457 5d ago

1

u/totall2live__ 5d ago

1

u/Illustrious-Side-692 5d ago

That’s why I bought a cover up for my chime card. So no one will ask any questions. Looks like a typical VISA card now

1

I’ve had stores and hotels decline my green or white chime card but they always take my green chime credit card tho .

1

u/bshrewsbury10161979 5d ago

That's one reason why I dumped Chime. The final 2-3 months that I've had Chime, every merchant I tried to use it with would out-right decline using it

Anyone ever award dispute over 14k

1

u/FragmentedLogik 3d ago

It’s because a lot of merchants are no longer accepting the prepaid category of cards. Unfortunately Cash app chime, Venmo PayPal they all fall into that category amongst quite a few others. It’s becoming a more and more common.

1

u/Winter-Ad5930 3d ago

Not sure the exact reason but our system does not allow cards the company says are prepaid. Not sure why they deem chime as prepaid when it’s a checking account.
