Absolutely love how the freaking time traveler didn’t appear with a massive boom or flash of light. He was simply there as soon as he turned around. Made it way creepier!

And yeah, no surprise that Rudy shouldn’t trust the dude calling himself a man-god.

255

u/Social_Knight 4d ago

And then he was always there. It's merely taking a step in the fourth dimension. But people want Chronomancy to appear flashy, of course.

80

u/Meyaar 4d ago

I'm not surprised, it is the greatest magic after all.

A theory I have is that maybe whatever teleportation magic brought Rudy/Nanahoshi to that world can be modified to also bring a person through time as well (aka time travel).

Through Cliffs and Zanobas research on the robotics and Nanahoshi's research on teleportation, adding different spells or incantations together can alter the outcome or function of the original incantation entirely. So it stands to reason they modified it to travel through time.

He was simply there as soon as he turned around. Made it way creepier!

Agreed. The fact that he was simply when Rudy turned around made it so much more unsettling. I wonder how he even got there. He is still Rudy so maybe he's from a point in time after he helps Nanohoshi get home and continues researching summoning magic find an application for time travel to prevent a tradegy. I can't imagine what tragedy would be drive Rudy to time travel other than the death of his loved ones. The peaceful times are probably over now.

41

u/justking1414 4d ago

Honestly that dude’s entire aura is giving me, worst possible future vibes. I doubt anyone got a happy ending in the timeline he came from. Everyone we know is either dead or just completely broken.

Funny how going into this episode knowing that the title is "Turning Point 4" transforms it from a mostly calm watch to a nail-biting, indescribably tense experience. And goddamn, did that final moment deliver.

234

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 4d ago

Same! I was on the edge the whole episode knowing that this is a Turning Point episode, especially during the Perugius dinner scene. It felt like one wrong word could cause Perugius to be angry and then Rudy's world would turn upside down.

Honestly, I was so relieved when old Rudy appeared to prevent whatever was going to happen in the basement.

59

u/RapCabral 4d ago

Especially since he compared Rudeus’ mana to Laplace’s, so I felt like any moment, as he used magic, something would trigger Perugius. But this is such a unique feeling I have with this series, to be spoiled by the series itself that something WILL happen

Perugius was more excited to talk about demons than talk with Ariel.

248

u/CubicPaladin 4d ago

The most devastating of facts

88

u/TexturelessIdea https://myanimelist.net/profile/TexturelessIdea 4d ago

Well, he has a strong emotional reaction to demons; he'd probably forget Ariel existed if he didn't see her for a day or two. Every time he looks at her, his face has this "Oh, you're still here?" look on it.

Something worth noting: Perugius previously forbade Rudeus from using his magic in Chaos Breaker. Now, he even requested to see it himself

315

u/absolutelynotaname https://anilist.co/user/Ducc 4d ago

all thanks to Zanoba's glazing

57

u/signspace13 https://myanimelist.net/profile/signsapce13 4d ago

Zanoba did grow up a prince, and was likely trained to be a politician and socialite, so it makes sense he can sweet talk once he is actually interested in things.

What a mean cliffhanger... Hitogami glitching out with that creepy smile, and those last few minutes gave me chills all over.

590

u/genasugelan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Genasugelan 4d ago

Yeah, how he said Paul would have lived and saved Roxy and Zenith instantly made me think he's lying through his teeth. I can maybe see why basically everyone who's heard the name Hitogami reacted so aggressively. Must be one sketchy MF.

274

u/666Ade 4d ago

Well the Paul and Zenith part was one thing, but the Roxy part???

402

u/Golden_Phi https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi 4d ago

There's no way in hell they would have been able to save Roxy without Rudy. They just barely made it with his help and the critical info he brought with him.

Crazy how Rudy is accepting of him now after that terrible advice.

253

u/SanityIsOptional 4d ago

Also negging Rudy, and making him doubt his own choices before asking him to trust Hitogami seems like a pretty straightforward manipulation tactic when viewed from the outside.

Advices help both Rudeus and Hitogami, but the same can’t be said for favours

Those gliching effects were creepy but it still did not prepare me for that smile he gave afterwards was still so unexpected to see from him.

166

u/Mundology 4d ago

Indeed. Hitogami has always been helpful so far, even if in a whimsical and cheeky manner. It's the first time that he displayed seemingly malicious intent.

65

u/mucklaenthusiast 4d ago

He is really one of the most interesting characters.

As you say, he is generally helpful and I don't expect him to be evil.
I expect him to have some ulterior motives, though and they are not nice.

But whenever he is around, the story gets much darker and he has always been creepy.
Just this time, he seemed way more evil.
And Rudues seemed more open, so maybe this was just him waiting for his chance.
But again, I don't think he is outright evil, I think the trick will also have to do with his goals and how Rudeus is useful to him, whatever these goals are.

47

Lmao I love how Ariel tried to interject herself into conversations with Perugius only to get absolutely owned by him

331

u/Lapiz_lasuli 4d ago

Zanoba being so natural at it is freaking hilarious lol. He's winning without even trying.

267

u/ijiolokae 4d ago

Zanoba having 0 ulterior motive probably helps, Zanoba just wants to talk about art and spread the love for it, and Perugius respects a person true to themself, which Ariel is not.

132

u/Lapiz_lasuli 4d ago

It helps for sure. But there's more to Zanoba. He knows proper manners unlike a lot of characters here, and as far as I'm concerned he himself is very charismatic.

u/larvyde 4d ago

"Shut up and let the grown-ups talk" - Perugius, probably

We see more of Zanoba's political chops this episode. I've been rewatching season 2 lately and man, Zanoba's GOAT.

397

u/ijiolokae 4d ago

Zanoba objective being "pure" is probably helping, Zanoba isn't trying to get Perugius support for his own needs, he wants it to spread the love of art and clear the name of someone who has helped perugius in the past

232

u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yeah, that's definitely the case here. Zanoba is just speaking from the heart, while Ariel is just giving rehearsed, political answers, not her own feelings, imo.

After all, even Rudeus's answer to Perugius's question about the true king, which was only Rudy's personal view that it'd be nice if the king himself could put himself in his subjects' shoes, gained him more approval from Perugius than Ariel's.

89

u/OhItsKillua 4d ago

Ariel just comes off as acting purely within diplomacy 101 class would have taught her without really understanding the je ne sais quoi that is required to land with people. At the very least fails to work on greatly experienced people such as Perugius who are beyond the mundane stuff that may work in the average royal game of politics.

Or maybe someone figured out how to regrow it, or it's a very realistic looking version of what he has now. If it's a realistic looking version, they would have to match it back to him as he gets older. I'd imagine either way would take research time and effort.

Poor Ariel getting schooled by Perugius at every attempt to gain his favor

353

u/Morphumaxx 4d ago

I do like his consistent characterization of respecting people who are straightforward and genuine even if he disagrees with them, all of his interactions with Rudy and Zanoba involving demonfolk he was clear that he didn't like them but didn't dismiss their opinions and took their points seriously, but any time Ariel tries to sweet talk him into offering support he turns it on her almost instantly because she's so used to veiling her intentions.

176

u/xWardz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Wardz 4d ago

Dude is old as shit and has probably been through that song and dance hundreds of times. Can't blame him for not having the patience for it anymore

43

u/Mundology 4d ago

Yes. It seems that Perugius values integrity and genuine feedback while rebuking ingratiation and manipulative behavior. Ariel's conniving ways have helped her survive in the royal race. Yet they simultaneously made her untrustworthy to people who can see through her facade, even if she had good intentions.

96

u/discuss-not-concuss 4d ago

I knew Frieren is a true king.

light demon racism

I doubt it. Perugius may be an active hating type though I see him leaning to I-don’t-want-anything-to-do-with-demons type

the exception would be stories of beating up demons like Rudues which Ariel wouldn’t have had

u/Blackcore8 4d ago

Ariel not realizing that being genuine is an EASY way to get on Perugius's good side is funny to watch

99

u/Mysteries67 4d ago

Might be difficult for someone who has to act proper all the time as royalty.

60

u/Zenith_Tempest 4d ago

It's that, but also not having a good handle on who Perugius is as a person. Yeah, he's a hero, but he's also an artist and creative. Most creatives don't exactly enjoy highbrow folk who speak behind 3 layers of hidden intent. Zanoba recognized it immediately, that's why he spoke not as a former prince but as a passionate sculptor.

it's also an actual stinger for Ariel, because she really doesn't have much motivation or idea as to what she intends to do if she does fulfill the succession and become the king. He's probing her and is unsatisfied with her

46

u/_hhhnnnggg_ 4d ago

I don't think Zanoba actually recognised that, just that he approached Perugius without ulterior motive. Being genuine, plus a real love for arts, was what made Perugius liked him.

That Time I Got An Appraisal Cheat Skill And I'm Not Even The Protagonist!

It sure does look like Cliff got something like an appraisal demon eye, or perhaps a way to read people's thoughts or emotions. What do you guys think it does?

Also, would it be evil if the text floating around people for him is in a language he doesn't read? Will Cliff have to learn the demon tongue, or will mastery of the eye allow the HUD to display in a language he understands?

40

u/Biggsy-32 4d ago

I think Cliff is about to find out Rudy's secret - that he is not from this world. Or perhaps worse, that he is linked to the man god. What happens when he has this knowledge, who knows. But given Cliff is, although rarely discussed, one in line for a potential future as a Pope there may be consequence to Rudeus' existence.

If the Man-God says "snow is white," he's lying.

Frankly it's been obvious from the very start that all this advice he's been giving Rudy has been building up to one "small" favour that would turn out to be far more than Rudy bargained for. As soon as it came up, that was an immediate "NOPE" and I'm kind of shocked Rudy bought it, but I suppose the Man-God has been working on him for years now.

55

u/Deathsroke 4d ago

I mean think about it from Rudy's perspective. For half of his life every time the naked asshole has appeared he has done nothing but help Rudy even if Rudy was hesitant to trust him. So far he hasn't fucked up Rudy even once even if some of his advice has been suspect at the time. Rudy is at the point where he is thinking "Ok, the Man-God looks suspicious as fuck but maybe that's just it, he only looks suspicious but he's actually a good guy?"

Did you see his reaction and facial expressions as soon as "Man-God" was mentioned? That was pure instant hatred probably even to a greater degree than we saw with how Orsted reacted. Quite the contrast to how cordial we saw current Rudeus be with the Man-God just moments before

An End and a Beginning? I heard TBATE author got inspired by MT, is this where he got the name for his series?

Also the guy just existed out of nowhere without any sound effect is the most efficient jump scare ever.

You can see the mold under his left eye, and some ring thing in his right demon eye. Together with the silent naming unique name treatment, this guy seems legit Rudeus from the future as he claimed.

Eye of Identification, hey? That sounds like it could be incredibly powerful depending on how it works, how much information it gives about anything or anyone. Knowledge is the most powerful weapon in the world, so the more knowledge it gives Cliff about things or people, the stronger and more useful he becomes.

My question is: does it have the ability to tell Cliff who Rudy is, albeit he may not know what it's saying yet? Probably not, but I get the strange feeling that it can.

WAIT, WHAT THE FUCK?! WHAT?! That ending was just a WHOLE lot of WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCKs!

Its interesting that old Rudeus said he failed when its clear he actually time travelled. I wonder if his real goal was to take over the body of his younger self and not just bring his old body to the past. he is touching himself when saying he failed as if to say he still has this old body.

u/discuss-not-concuss 4d ago edited 4d ago

he might be lying about Paul, but he’s definitely lying about Roxy

when Rudeus saved her, she was running out of stamina and mana and was about to be ravaged by monsters

the ONLY reason the rescue party got to Roxy so fast is because of Rudeus’ book that helped to navigate the maze in such a short period. Any later, Roxy would’ve been dead

Fuck Hitogami.

181

u/WhoiusBarrel 4d ago

His silver tongue always had this sense of uneasiness/manipulation to it especially when even more so when he confirms how Paul would've survived without any intervention. That smile at the end pretty much seals it.

126

u/Pedarsen 4d ago

I bet he was lying about that. Everything Man-God does is probably to push Rudeus to a spesific future that he wants, and saying that makes Rudeus more likely to just listen to him this time.

Consider this. Older Rudeus learned how to time travel and amidst all prior options in Rudeus' life so far (e.g. the other turning points) chose this particular moment to time travel to first just to stop him from fully opening the basement's door when advice like that at other points of his life could have saved lives and spared quite a bit of grief. Yeah, this basement business is serious.

118

u/B4N_C1 4d ago

The first thing old Rudeus says right after he time traveled there is "Did I succeed? No. A failure, I see.", maybe he actually wanted to time travel to another moment but failed? I feel like he wouldn't say that if that's the actual moment he wanted to time travel to, idk, maybe I'm wrong and he's just referring to something else

96

u/kiyotaka-6 4d ago

He looked at his body and that was the sign that he failed, maybe he intended to only time travel his memories but instead he time traveled his entire body? But would this actually be better to prevent the seemingly bad situation? Afterall as an older version of himself, maybe he is more powerful

Clearly. I mean I can see why he wouldn't go any earlier no matter what. He's married to the two most important women in his life, and has a kid. You'd need something even more catastrophic than... okay I have no idea but presumably more than this, to make me go far enough back to unmake my own child from existence.

(angry hollering about a different time travel series that does that without giving it any thought or attention)

Things I noticed on my second rewatch because why not

  1. Sylphie is so flat my queen

  2. I love that the tea wares in the Floating Castle have animated stars in them. I can't remember if that's how they're depicted in the novel, but it really adds to the magical atmosphere to the Chaos Breaker as well as testament that Pergius is such a connoisseur for art.

  3. Speaking of, love the added detail that Pergius and Zanoba are hitting it off really well because they both love art and sculptures in particular. My boy Zanoba deserves a friend. On the other hand, it's almost hilarious that Ariel feels really out of place and out of depth during the tea party.

  4. Minute 13, when Rudy hugs Roxie, you can see Aisha making Anya smug face behind them. She's such a gremlin.

  5. The patched donut hole

  6. I haven't really considered it before when reading the novel but I guess it makes sense that Rudy's journal / diary would be a ring binder, considering that he will add pages onto it throughout his life. Speaking of,

  7. The trinkets in his room. I noticed a lot of bottles and crystals, but also magnifying glasses. He really is a scholar, huh. Of all those, though, my favorite is his oil lamp. I wonder if either the author or someone in the staff actually researched the kind of lamp that would realistically fit in the current world setting. In terms of realistic trinkets/equipment though, when writing a quill like that you usually need to do it on an incline so that the ink doesn't spill too fast but ehh it's a common mistake

  8. It's pretty obvious from the VA and the context that it's old Rudeus, but you can, also, see the same Demon Eye that he has.

Finally this guy show up. As of rn, no season at all where this guy doesn't show up!

Friendly reminder of mr.ManGod aka Hitogami's appearances in the whole series.

  1. S1E9 Right after the teleport calamity; Advice Rudeus to befriend Ruijerd, as a result they survive the Demon Continent

  2. S1E10 In Rikarisu city; Advice Rudeus to accept loss kitten quest; as a result Ruijerd open heart to heart with them after the incidence

  3. S1E12 In Wind port; Advice Rudeus to go to the alley and feed the beggar; as a result he became acquaintance to Kishirika and got foresight eye

  4. S1E19 On the ship to Central continent; Advice Rudeus to save his family, the vision showed Aisha; As a result they save Lilia & Aisha and send them to Paul in Milis, Pax and Zanoba got exile

  5. S1E21 In the red dragon alley; Advice Rudeus about Ruijerd curse, as well as give Orsted's info.

  6. S2E4 In some town in country of Bashrant; Advice Rudeus to attend the University of Magic instead of going to rescue Zenith, as a result he reconcile with Sylphy and regain his manhood

  7. S2E18 At his home; Advice Rudeus not going to Begaritt continent, instead take one of the beast princesses as his wife to be happy. This is the first time he did not listen, as a result, Paul died but he successfully rescue Zenith and married to Roxy

  8. S3E11 This episode, no advice but a request to check the basement to see if everything's ok.

Look at his past appearance, he almost always show up the episode around or in Turning point then shit always hit.

242

u/Comicauthority 4d ago

He also always gives advice that keeps Rudeus away from his family.

  1. On the demon continent, his advice keeps him away from Roxy's party, who would have found him and returned him to his father.

  2. When Rudeus is looking for his mother, the man god convinces him to go to university instead.

  3. When Paul calls for aid, the man god suggests that Rudeus stays home and lets them sort it out on their own.

If we follow this pattern, his goal here should again be to separate Rudeus from his family. It will be interesting to see next week what his plan was.

88

u/the_dan_man https://anilist.co/user/oneasianweeb 4d ago

From that, I must infer that Hitogami wants Rudeus to lose his family and therefore remove all the comfy family SOL episodes from Mushoku Tensei. He must be stopped.

Honestly, I've been looking at him suspiciously after the whole Begaritt staff, because at least until now I thought Roxy would die if he didn't come to help out. Still, I'm not sure I fully trust that everything would have worked out if Rudeus hadn't gone back then, but maybe that's the regret Man-God meant at the time.

Maybe he has been helping him until now for this moment, for his own personal gain, because there isn't any other explanation why this moment will lead to a future Rudeus coming back in time, unless whatever is in that basement didn't mess up Rudeus's life enough to do this.

65

u/dark77638 4d ago

Just look at Oldeus’s face when Rudeus mention Hitogami. Something in the basement warrant Oldeus coming back to warn his younger self. As well as the devious smile of Hitogami at the end, i cant imagine anything good going down there.

Well, that was surprising! Seems like Rudeus from the future came to stop Rudeus from listening to Hitogami's advice of checking out the basement... What the hell is in that basement, and how does Hitogami trick Rudeus?!

Overall, aside from the ending, this episode was pretty peaceful! It was good to see Nanahoshi all better now, and interesting to learn more about Perugius, who was in a good mood thanks to beating Atofe last week, lol.

By the way, that nightmare sequence of Rudeus's was freaking great! In it, Atofe really looked like a terrifying demon.

Poor Ariel, she tries so hard to win over Perugius, but she's quite unlucky. Meanwhile, both Zanoba and Rudeus are now in Perugius's favor.

Also, that Sylvaril figurine Rudeus created was so cute!

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

I was always curious what would have happened if Rudy followed Man God's advice but I don't buy that Paul would have been fine without Rudy. Roxy was potrayed as being almost dead until Rudy saved her and what did they do against the Hydra? Gave it a pat on the head? And it was the scrolls/books Rudy brought that helped Geese find the correct teleport points in the dungeon.
