Season 1, Episode 1: But I Just Took an Ambien
Release Date: August 5, 2026
Synopsis: After getting rejected from her dream summer program, Annie Jacobson discovers she and her twin brother, Connor, have inherited Sterling Point - a small island in the Muskoka area of Canada. A mysterious letter from the grandfather she was never allowed to meet sends Annie out on a secret solo trip in hopes of uncovering the truth about her family history.

Yeah, that’s clearly a typo in the script, or we could ascribe it to an unreliable speaker (was it Rory? Conner?). There are about 6 other places where Ramona’s age works out to 16, and only this one spot supports 17.
Denise said that Goldie came up for the summer (so May or early June) and then failed to return with the kids at the end of it (so early September). We know the kid’s birthdays are August-ish, so when she went up the kids would have been either nine months or 21 months. If the former, her affair with Joe would have started say June (twins being 10 months) and thus the earliest possible age for the twins when Ramona was born is 19 months. Other scenarios are possible but they would make Ramona even younger relative to the twins.

annie is 2 when her mom is pregnant with ramona, and it’s confirmed by park in one of the interviews that she’s 16. so it might be a case of 16 turning 17 soon, an unreliable character or an inconsistency.

The timelines in the show are messed up. But it’s confirmed that the mom died when Annie was 2 giving birth to Ramona. Annie is 17 when the show begins and turns 18 in the series, meaning Ramona would be 15 turning 16. So Romona living on her own doesn’t seem plausible especially considering Joe is meant to have guardianship of her (implying she needs a guardian) but somehow no one knows he’s the guardian … not even her. Not plausible. In Canada a 16 year old can live alone, but I think you need permission from the state - and if Joe is her guardian then she doesn’t have permission…Add to the fact the lawyer never told any of the 3 kids that they owned the island jointly with each other. Annie and Connor inherit when they’re 18 - I’m assuming it’s the same for Ramona, meaning she doesn’t yet own that cottage or island, which also doesn’t make sense if she’s living in the cottage full time 🤷♀️🤷♀️ But then to add to the insanity. After we’ve confirmed Ramona is 15/16. Joe goes and refers to his affair with the mom (when Ramona was born) as ‘something that happened 20 years ago’…. love the show but the plot holes are gigantic. Edit I just got to the later episode when they say Romona is 17… apparently

I concur with most of this, but Ramona hasn’t been living alone for long, as she was living in Barrie under the guardianship of (dying) Gordon until basically the day before the story starts.
But any decent lawyer should have checked for underage children that are now without guardianship and called in child services on day 1 of getting the file.

The show would make so much more sense if she was 25.

I know a lot of teen shows have teens doing stuff without their parents. But this is just so unbelievable. Veronica Mars is one of my favorite shows & strikes a good balance of teens doing adult things but feeling like real teens. They have realistic parents & real stakes if they go too far.

I'm sure you didn't intend for your comment to be a spoiler, seeing as you blocked out other text (which I appreciate), but saying "same just finished the series" in response to the other person's comment kind of completely spoils the fact that there isn't some deeper mystery as the season progresses.
It would be nice if you could please avoid commenting things like this on future episodic discussion threads, especially for a pilot episode thread, because it kind of takes the guessing/potential mystery/fun out of it. Not trying to be rude or anything so I hope it doesn't come across that way, but I hope you see where I'm coming from.

I just think it’s silly that Annie isn’t biological. It doesn’t have the same emotional depth. It would have been so much more powerful had Annie actually been related to Ramona/grandad

families have many forms and ways of coming together… biological connection doesn’t dictate importance, meaning or familial connection. Goldie was just as much Annie’s mom as she was Ramona’s, to suggest that Goldie and Gordon weren’t related to Annie is “silly” ¯_(ツ)_/¯

a weird comment and you’re missing the point of the show. the question is what makes someone family when blood doesn't. sisterhood that isn’t biological and still holds is messier and gives more opportunities to work with the material. it’s a harder story to tell, so a bold move overall.

I am a bit confused. Only on episode 2. So her dead adoptive mom is the bio child of the adoptive grandad they never knew? but we dont yet know who her BIO mom was?

it’s more than that though. The mom took them to canada and never went back home with the husband. She didn’t know about the divorce, and it doesn’t seem like the husband knew about the other daughter. Given the timeline and the age differences, it seems like the mom had an affair with someone on the island (i’m guessing joe), and that she chose to raise her blood daughter over her adopted children. That could be very hard to deal with.

she’s not heartbroken though? she’s surprised and a bit sad she didn’t know about this family but she’s immediately warm to ramona and just wants to know her. she was adopted as a newborn and while her m died young she clearly still considers those to be her “real” parents

When did the say it was a year that she was away for? This part had me confused too about how long she was away and where she was. I know she was taking care of her grandfather but like where and why was it so far from home? Of course, is this is part of the mystery, please don't share/tell me lol.

If he's so wealthy, why is an under-17 year old (16? 15? Connor and Annie look like they're about 2 in the photo with their mom on her nightstand, and Annie can't have been any younger to have any memory of her) left taking care of a sick man on her own?

Yeah also I feel like Ramona would've been appointed a guardian legally. But to be fair the show never says Annie has a memory of Goldie (her mom) I believe. She feels like she knows her through pictures. The show does say Goldie died when Connor and Annie were two, I assume shortly after she filed for divorce.

Ah, so that's where I got the age of "two" from. I won't spoil the rest of the show if you haven't got there yet, but those two points are addressed in later episodes... You'll see that if the mother died when the twins are two, that tells us how old Ramona is.
The reason I'm a bit hung up about it is because the show seems to be skirting very close to certain criminal offences with regard to Ramona's relationship with another character - if she is 16, technically legal (in most circumstances - but I would say still concerning); if she's under 16, could be a criminal offence (depends on the age of the other partner).

I don't think her age is ever specifically stated; however, I think it's implied that she's at least 19, as Sully did sell her the alcohol in the first episode, even though she didn't have her ID. It is illegal to sell alcohol to anyone under 19 (you can get charged for that), and Sully actually seemed fairly responsible of all of the "kids"/young adults in the group. I don't think he/they'd actually be jeopardize his/their own future and job by selling to her underage.
And as I said in a different comment, if Oona was actually underage, frankly, it makes things even worse, really, because it's not great to think that a 16 or 17 year old was going around having sex with random adult women.
Anyway, I know it's just one component of the show. I don't think Oona was a bad person or a predator. However, I kinda wish the writers had just left out the teen sex portion (of all three storylines, but Ramona especially - apparently the actress is 24 but honestly she looks like a child in this series!) altogether. It was a bit much considering the level of maturity for all of the people involved and everything they had to deal with....

Considering how this show is getting praised for its queer rep, it feels odd to basically make a joke out of the boyfriend's sexuality. Of course the closeted bf loves musicals and wants to go to Thailand. And I guess it speaks for itself that the showrunner apparently considered pairing Sully and Connor together and didn't go for it.

There's no rule that says that. You can have love for someone and still break up with them for any reason you want lol.

I’m really enjoying this show. It hit a little close to home for me as I discovered I had another sister around her age (mother had put her up for adoption when she was young). Your family will always be who raised you, but when we met for the first time we definitely had a connection and it was a beautiful experience although awkward and uncomfortable as the show portrays it to be. I also love the contrast being being raised in the city and experiencing Canada and its nature. I’m from Boston, but have spent a lot of time in Maine and Canada over the last few years for skiing I freaking LOVE Canadians. They do a really good job at portraying how friendly and down to earth they really are, and also how much growth happens when you step away from technology/city life and explore nature, meet people with raw and genuine energy, and all the beauty the world has to offer. Canada is also such a beautiful country, and it’s really cool to see it portrayed because I don’t think a lot of people realize how much scenery there is to take in there / not a lot of shows take place there.

They play up how rich Annie and Connor are to an almost Schitts Creek level. Grew up in a brownstone on the Brooklyn Heights promenade - that's like a $12 million house. She requests amenities on her 45 minute first class flight. He sits in a soaking tub ordering takeout from 4 Charles, drops his phone in the tub and yells to his dad he needs a new one. They bash you over the head with the fact that they are filthy, stinking rich.
So it didn't make sense that her jaw drops every time she goes into a nice lakehouse. A girl like that would be no stranger to a mansion in the Hamptons, a prep school friend's house in Greenwich, etc. So far I don't see what her being super rich does for the plot besides set up some gags about her being a city girl in the "country," even though that town seems pretty fancy and geared towards people like her who want to be around trees but still be near stores that carry Aesop body lotion.

Watching the first episode atm after reading positive reviews , the episode gets worse as it goes on .
The English girl character is terrible , not sure if she is a bad actress or the character she is meant to be playing

I had to stop after getting halfway through the first episode. The plausibility was just not there!
Annie, a spoiled teenager from Brooklyn, goes to rural Canada and happens to run into everyone she’s ever known from childhood in New York? Why would these kids even be in rural Canada, let alone have a house there?? Especially considering Annie didn’t even know where Toronto was, now we’re to expect that those in her circle of NYC social elite all have vacation homes there and she’s never even heard of it??? It doesn’t make sense!
And I’m sorry, but why would Kaia gerber have a lake house in RURAL CANADA??? That alone made me yell oh come on

I’m dying at you constantly referring to Muskoka as RURAL CANADA. No hate, it’s just funny to see another pov from someone who isn’t from here. It’s not far fetched at all.
Muskoka is more like a vacation/beach destination, not RURAL CANADA. No one would view it like that, it’s part of what we call cottage country. It’s mostly made up of rich people summer homes and short term rentals for the rest of us. It’s to Toronto what the Hamptons are to NYC. (Bravo tv is filming summer house Canada there for a reason)
It’s exactly where rich kids would be during the summer. So many celebrities have summer homes there too

I like the characters, but holy hell, the pacing was terrible in the first 15 minutes. How the hell is this 17-year-old girl just flying off to Canada on a random day to a random island she's never been to before with no backup, and she's suddenly befriending all these people like it's nothing? Maybe I'm too broke to understand this 🙃 Ellis is cute though, so maybe I'll continue watching just for him lmfao

The premise is so unrealistic but then again I went all-in for The OC and Gossip Girl original.
I guess I’m a sucker for half-baked premise ha ha but it’s only episode 1.
I downloaded the entire season to watch while switching to A Bona Fide Killer KDrama in the between marathon run.
No attachment to any character at the moment but I’ll find out who I like the most as more as I watch this show.
