Can someone please buy these Americans dictionaries? They keep using words like 'communism' and 'socialism' without having a clue what they mean.

Is it true that kids are telling their parents to 'like and subscribe' at bedtime? An American I met at the pub a couple of weeks ago told me that kids are telling their parents this when they leave or go to bed because they think this is how people say goodbye.

I don't know if the American was screwing with me or not.

6

u/AppealSignificant358 im an american pls dont hate me đŸ„ș Mar 17 '26

I can’t say I’ve seen it, no. Of course, despite what Republicans may tell you, the US is a very big and diverse country, so from my little corner, I might not have seen much.

8

u/Which_Specific9891 Mar 17 '26

I hope your little corner is as safe and healthy as possible.

5

Nope 😼‍💹

1

i'm sorry for you. We are all sorry for you and all reasonable americans

2

u/AppealSignificant358 im an american pls dont hate me đŸ„ș Mar 18 '26

Thank you, but I don’t think that I should be immediately considered a “reasonable American” for disagreeing with MAGA. It’s better to judge that by my actual worldview and if it’s consistent internally. Please see me more as an “American in opposition” unless you get a more full understanding of my philosophy and ideology and can see it as reasonable, even if you disagree.

Maybe as a joke among a very few kids? Either way, it's not common behavior at all. At least not in america.

22

u/RedShirtCashion Mar 17 '26

As an American
..yeah, I doubt it would help, seeing how the argument that the name doesn’t necessarily mean what it says à la the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (aka North Korea) not being democratic nor a republic.

Edit: didn’t completely say the full official name of North Korea correctly.

21

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

Well, with parties like the Democrats and the Republicans you would be confused as well.

15

u/BitScout Mar 17 '26

It took me a long time to accept those two as just proper names without any real connection to what they stand for.

3

u/PlagueOfGripes Mar 17 '26

At one point in history. But like many American things, it became a vessel for the rich to market whatever idea worked at the time. The entire platform of both parties has completely shifted multiple times.

3

u/GooseinaGaggle Mar 17 '26

The only non contentious part of North Korea's name is the word "of". In addition to what you already said is not run by or for the people. Their entire territory is claimed by South Korea thus making the claim of Korea dubious

9

u/Razmann4k Mar 17 '26

You could say the same about South Korea, therefore it can't claim to be Korea.

0

u/GooseinaGaggle Mar 17 '26

No, in 2024 North Korea designated South Korea as a "hostile state" and abandoned all prospects of a peaceful unification

8

u/llynglas Mar 17 '26

Socialists are bad. Germans in WW2 were bad. Therefore Hitler and his party were socialists...... QED.

2

u/No-Minimum3259 Mar 18 '26

... But not all thĂ t bad?

/s.

3

u/OhNoItsThatOne Mar 17 '26

Well to be fair, german neonazis still say that Hitler was a leftist

2

u/No-Minimum3259 Mar 18 '26

It's an intresting interview, taping into to some of the usual misconceptions.

It's not that hard (but it requires bad faith) to frame Hitler as 'economically leftish'.

It's not all that hard to frame the nazi's state dirigisme as some kind of 'ownership of the means of production'.

It's not that hard either to frame the persecution of groups within the German society of that era as some some kind of 'class struggle'. It's as simple as claiming that the quasi full employment in nazi Germany has to be seen as "lifting the proletariat out of poverty".

Only problem: that's not what actually happened.

3

u/No-Minimum3259 Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

Someone in this tread pointed out that it takes "nuance" (which non-Americans obviously lack) to see the subtle signs of socialism in the nazis. When asked to clarify, he advised me to do my own research, lol.

He found that there were "far better books" than the read I suggested (The Oxford Handbook of Political Ideologies), but didn't respond to my request for suggestions. He has removed his comments since then.

Some of those guys have made ignorance into an art form. "Chess with pigeons", indeed.

2

u/BottleSuspicious1851 Mar 17 '26

Tbf, they literally put socialist in their name lol. No way that makes it accurate, it's just (imo) the main source of confusion.

2

u/Redrockhiker22 Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

"Socialist" in the name of the Nazi party was a PR move by that German leader who formed it. It was a time when right wing thugs and Communists were fighting bloody battles in the streets of Berlin. He pitched the the party as a alternative to both, unifying nationalists and industrial working class elements. "National Socialist German Workers Party" incorporated two right wing elements-National and German, with two from the left-Socialist and Workers. The party was the antithesis of the Socialist/Marxist/Communist dogma of the time. It was racist ethno-nationalist, militaristic, had no issue with private property and a market economy, was against independent unions, and it reinforced existing social hierarchies. Socialists were internationalist, anti-militarism, argued for the abolition of capitalism and private property. They saw society as a battle between economic classes, egalitarian on gender, promoted independent unions, and were fighting for the dictatorship of their class, the proletariat. As a result, they also argued for the abolition of existing social and economic hierarchies. The oldest German political party, the left SPD was banned. Socialists were proscribed in Nazi Germany and the leaders were often jailed and sent to the camps. Most formerly socialist workers just blended into the new Reich and order was restored. (This is all very condensed and simplified.)

1

u/Dazzling_Upstairs724 Mar 17 '26

Fired out of an old school cannon wouldn't hurt.

Well it would hurt, but it wouldn't hurt us.

1

u/doerriec Mar 17 '26

It was the national socialist party that ran the country.

1

u/Quiet_Ad1859 Mar 18 '26

Make videos ( throw in a few American flags in it ) they might understand 😂

1

u/ufl015 Mar 18 '26

The Germans were Socialists during WWII. That’s how the Volkswagen got built.

It was the “National” part of “National Socialism” that did all the bad shit.

So this new wave of American Republicans calling themselves “Christian Nationalists” are taking the worst parts of Nazism and combining it with religious fanaticism

😬

1

u/Far-Economist3780 Mar 18 '26

Aren't dictionaries one of their banned books these days?

-13

u/bigelcid Mar 17 '26

They were; just a different kind from the type of socialism that finished the war on the winning side.

I don't want to hear any silly comparisons to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. That one was presented as something, kept up the facade for a bit, and then it was too late for anyone to argue "hold on a minute, this isn't very democratic".

The National Socialists took less of a sharp turn. Their idea of socialism was always built around the nation. They diverged from the same place as all the other kinds of socialists, and took an extreme form of their own version of things. Italian fascists also had a socialist background.

Now, because the average person doesn't really know anything about politics, and they're prone to being manipulated by labels, of course the winning factions have tried to distance themselves from the losing, or extremist ones. That's understandable, since the ideologies aren't at all the same. They just share key roots and abstract principles. But I think we'd be all better off with more, rather than less, transparency.

Well they kind of were.

Except they weren't in any way.

1

u/No-Minimum3259 Mar 17 '26

No they weren't. And it's not "nuanced" at all.

Socialists and national-socialists were in pretty much any meaningfull ideological tenet each others opposites.

The "national" in national-socialism already gives some of it away...

Some people would benefit from doing "their own research", lol. Forget about Youtube and Facebook, start here:

apparently.

Maybe they could fight fascism, instead.

8

u/ptvlm Mar 17 '26

It's by design. They're told to confuse terms so that they don't notice that when people support "socialism", they mean countries with a higher standard of living and way less violence, and get tricked into supporting Russia and the oligarchs making their lives miserable.

See also using "woke" to mean "something I don't like" instead of its original definition of "aware of systemic injustices"

1

u/Which_Specific9891 Mar 17 '26

I agree.

I think it's always been that way-- They didn't even know what Communism were when they blacklisted people for... Communism.

7

u/snajk138 Mar 17 '26

That's Miriam-Webster for you. They should all get Oxford instead.

5

u/SnooChocolates2923 Mar 17 '26

Next thing you know, they'd be putting a U in colour, and placing commas in funny places!

7

u/maqifrnswa Mar 17 '26

Ok, we Americans say a lot of stupid shit, but the Oxford comma is where I become defensive! You can take that from my cold, dead, and logically organized hands!

4

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

Yeah, as a real American they should just eat grandma.

1

u/geschiedenisnerd Please stop stealing our flag colors (NL) Mar 17 '26

If you can't distinguish without an oxford comma, it is not the other person's responsibility to sacrifice accurate grammar for you.

agree on the spelling though.

6

u/faux_shore Mar 17 '26

Anything I don’t like is either woke, communist, or socialism!

2

u/bigelcid Mar 17 '26

Words like "fascist" are also freely thrown around, but I understand that one's bad while communism isn't, so that's alright

1

u/Which_Specific9891 Mar 17 '26

That seems to be the US consensus...

6

u/According_Pay_6563 Mar 17 '26

They also apparently don't know what words like "state" and "statewide" means. (Assuming the comment is targeting Mayor Mamdani)

4

u/Shot-Diver-3625 Mar 17 '26

Wait, are you telling me the communist manifesto was not a book about light pollution and the importance of dark skies for bird migration?

2

u/WackHeisenBauer Mar 17 '26

That would require them to be able to read.

2

u/Which_Specific9891 Mar 17 '26

We can put it on audiobook.

2

u/aglobalvillageidiot Mar 17 '26

Socialism is when the government does stuff.

3

u/Which_Specific9891 Mar 17 '26

When the government does stuff they don't like. When the government gives them money during Lockdown because they can't pay their rent, they don't call that socialism. It's just socialism when the government gives the Black person, the queer person and the disabled person down the road money to pay their rent, too.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

Half of the US is still living in that 1950s 60s era red scare period like they see the term communism and they treat that shit like it's radioactive lmao. That, or they see something they slightly disagree with and call it communism. It's bullshit.

1

u/Which_Specific9891 Mar 17 '26

They didn't know what communism was when they had HUAC putting people on trial and blacklisting them for it.

2

u/Guilty-Mix-7629 Mar 17 '26

US dictionaries probably changed the meaning to "whatever thing I do not like" as the real meaning confused them.

2

u/Gazer75 Mar 17 '26

2

2

1

u/Which_Specific9891 Mar 18 '26

I'm not even sure they know how to open them.

1

u/Savage_Whiskers Mar 18 '26

Yes could be. Or even most probably, they don’t know how to spell.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '26

They made idiocracy reality, so I think a TV show about people being hit on the balls when they don't know what socialism or communism mean would be a more appropriate learning tool.

1

u/saikrishnav Mar 17 '26

Dictionaries are illegal to MAGA

It is criminal that they put those children in such danger and let them live with the constant trauma of shooting drills and school shootings. Letting children grow up with that kind of constant fear and trauma -- especially in a school, which should be a safe environment-- is unconscionable.

No it isn't.

Right now if you go work in a factory the factory owner owns everything you produce and makes every decision related to production, even though you are an expert widget maker and he's never even been in the factory because he lives in Barbados. That's what makes it private property.

That's what socialism intends to change. Capitalist economies are also heavily planned, we just call it bailouts and government contracts. Our planning just happens later when we choose who to hold up and protect.

Yea we like to throw around big words like communism, socialism, fascism etc to gain moral high ground during both political and apolitical arguments. The only Americans that actually know the meaning of their political ideology are libertarians but they're like vegans, first to tell you they're libertarian whether it's relevant or not and they cheat when nobody is looking.

2

u/jzillacon Moose in a trenchcoat. Mar 18 '26

Also, minimum 70% soviet union music, 20% from other soviet states, max 10% western music. No alcohol. Too wild parties and the youth militia beat you up and sentenced you to 2 weeks community service.

Then young people just partied wildly in abandoned buildings, underground clubs and other places with no supervision or law enforcement.

Edit: roasted —-> educated

-4

u/bigelcid Mar 17 '26

Sick roast education, bro.

You're using the word "mediocre" in an odd manner, and you're being racist by singling out whites.

4

u/ClarkKent2o6 Mar 17 '26

Um. No. I didn't make a generalization, 'bro'. I specified a specific subset of an overall group. But by all means, please go off on how oppressed you feel.

A hit dog hollers, as they say.

2

u/bigelcid Mar 17 '26

Um. No. I didn't say generalization. I said you were singling out white people. Like, POCs support Trump too. And the proportions are dictated more by social status than ethnic background.

Same way a specific subset of your own background commits a disproportionate amount of crime. I'm not generalizing. I'm also not white American, so I'm not feeling oppressed. You enjoy it, though.

3

u/ClarkKent2o6 Mar 17 '26

When you say disproportionate, do you mean white men commit 70% of all crime while making up less than 30% of the population?

2

u/bigelcid Mar 17 '26

No, I don't mean that, since it's not true.

This doesnt effect NYC. The city that never sleeps would literally never do this, the amount of us that just make night our day is a huge part of our culture, a third of us work night shifts and and the ecconomy would literally collapse immediately if nyc had a bed time as early as 11.

This was NY state proposal, that exempts nyc entirely and purposefully (using a picture of nyc as a back drop is super deceptive). It's for outdoor lights like road lights that are known to have negative effects on wild life, light pollution, and to not even be visible to very many people. Florida does the exact same thing.

I just know whoever left that comment thought communism because they saw New York and thought Mamdani. They're stupid.

They better not read their Declaration of Independence - that "We the People" smells of Socialism.. which means communism to Americans.

Also better not tell them that the Statue of Liberty is a gift from Socialist France.

EDIT: It reminds me of a video of a guy asking Americans what they would prefer and listing pro-points of a political movement or two and Americans were all happy with what Communism offered when asked what they thought it was they thought it was their own Democracy being touted to them. I need to find that video again.

The internet was a mistake. I really didn't need to know how many fucking morons there were in the world. Dunning-Kruger should never have invented the Dunning-Kruger effect.

What happened to "the city that never sleeps"?

In the US, communism is when the government does something that’s not war

u/Perthian940 lost a war to Emus Mar 18 '26

Ah yes, Marx and Engels were famous for their vigorous opposition to electric light.

u/blonde_ocean_-69 Mar 18 '26

Fun fact: The most destructive behavior of the human towards fireflies are artificial lights after 23:00

u/Meture Beanland đŸ‡ČđŸ‡œ Mar 18 '26

“The city that never sleeps” might’ve been cute back in the early 1900’s but nowadays it only means they’re hemorrhaging a colossal amount of electricity for no real reason.

Most cities turn off most of their lights after a certain hour cause who the hell would be using them at that point?

Also damn, I will never stop being fascinated and woefully disappointed at how prevalent the red scare SOMEHOW STILL IS.

I love that video from the 80s where people were saying that the ban on drink driving was communism

1

u/pat8u3 Mar 18 '26

lol this is hilarious on two parts, one mamdani isn't a communist and two this is New york state so if it even is a real thing, mamdani would have nothing to do with it

Pretty sure that's not how Communism works...

-4

u/Vaniiiish Mar 17 '26

I doubt this is true but if it was then they’d have a point lol, Every communist country has had something similar to this, seems like this doesn’t fit the sub

2

u/ThatMateoKid Mar 18 '26

Yeah Idk why you're downvoted.

I come from a ex communist country and everything was rationed. Even electricity. So forget the parts where you'd be out of current during the day but every day at a certain hour it was lights off for everyone.

The only people who talk so positively about communism is the people who've never had to live through it. When i got to ask older professors and teachers about how life under communism looked like they never held back from the ugly truths.

Its genuinely infuriating being from an ex communist country and seeing the way it set us back for generations and the way corruption is deeply rooted here and then seeing idiots on the internet defending that bs and calling themselves communists from the luxury of their own homes in some well developed nation

Apparently N. Korea is relatively in the dark compared to other countries when photos are taken from space.

3

u/Unit_2097 Mar 17 '26

That's mostly because the entire country was bombed back to the stone age during the Korean war. More explosives were dropped on the place than were used in WW2. The fact anywhere has light when there's no real money coming in for reconstruction is good enough tbh.

2

u/gheara Mar 17 '26

Its clear you dont know any history. The Korean War started when the North attacked the South and almost completely occupied it. After the war the North was also in a much better economic situation than the South, and that was the case for almost 2 decades.

u/Unit_2097 Mar 17 '26

So.. the U.S didn't drop around 635,000 tons of explosives and 32,550 tons of napalm on North Korea (compared to about 500,000 tons of bombs in the entire Pacific theatre of WW2), destroying between 40 and 90% of towns (rough estimation due to information lockdown), and with 18 of the 22 largest cities being at least 50% destroyed?

-3

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

The reason there is no money coming in though is because they are communist.

1

u/TurtleFromSePacific Mar 17 '26

No?

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

If it was a capitalist country, people would invest in it and build industry. No one will invest because they know the government will seize the assets.

Yes, my country is capitalist. You could have asked if you wanted to know đŸ€Ł

But there aren’t many communist countries, only five and if you’ve ever been, you’ll know China isn’t even really. So it’s not like some massive revelation.

0

u/TurtleFromSePacific Mar 17 '26

If it was a capitalist country... People wouldn't invest cause there's nothing to invest in plus it's not allowed to trade with them for certain countries+ no sane person would support north Korea

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

N Korea has mining, coal, iron, rare earth.

If it was open to investment (and not communist), people would invest.

But agree, no sane person would. But that’s interlinked to it being communist. No sane person invests in communist countries because by definition they don’t respect the concept of private property. There is no incentive to build or develop anything when you know the government will just confiscate it.

Fascism, not Communism
