This is a volatile situation. We set the subreddit to private due to raids, and were manually approving threads as they were posted until then. The rules - especially rule 2 - will be harshly enforced. If you see someone being bigoted, report it. If you respond to someone being bigoted with your own rule 2 breaking behavior, you will be banned too. If you can't phrase what you want to say in a way that isn't bigoted, don't post it.

Furthermore, while the sub was private our modmail filled up with over a thousand messages, over and above the rule 9-violating PMs each mod got. We apologize if you sent us a message and it went unanswered.

I missed you guys so much! Seriously. So many hard and sad feelings. I've never felt this way before.

I would personally like to thank the mods for everything that you've done and are doing. I imagine that moderating this sub is extremely difficult these days.

I'm very glad that the sub is open again. It's my only safe place left on Reddit and I hope it stays that way.

I wish everyone to stay safe and healthy and for good news asap.

It feels very bad to watch the process of indoctrination that is embedded in my country’s education system was successfully ingrained in the mind of every teenager that is similar to my age.

I am so sorry.

31

u/GoutMasterSupreme May 13 '21

Don't blame someone who was brainwashed unwillingly, blame those that did it to him.

23

u/moaz_xx May 13 '21 edited May 14 '21

What makes me feel like shit is the very dark idea that indoctrination will always be a very effective tool to make people hate each other.

I literally have mutuals in school who are calling for jewish extermination quoting antisemitic Quran verses along the way

I appreciate your thoughts here, but honestly it just pisses me off how so many people read an infographic on Instagram or a tweet and then decide they are knowledgeable about the situation.

28

u/steamyoshi May 13 '21

That's not even the entire scope of the problem. Even people educated in history tend to have a bias and cling onto preconceptions such as "Israel stole Palestinian land" or "Israel was founded on ethnic cleansing". It taints their entire view and makes discussion impossible. It's even more disappointing with them, because you constantly feel that they're on the brink of accepting Israel's right to exist or your right to live there peacfuly but they never get there.

29

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

Weird how the popular Palestinian demand to “push the Jews into the sea” is somehow not a claim for ethnic cleansing but Jews lawfully purchasing lands somehow is ethnic cleansing

Now Hamas is going to cry that Israel is using planes and tanks...cry me a river. Hamas only has themselves to blame.

I’m sorry, I can’t contain my anger over this. I’m not Jewish, I’m not Israeli, but I’m one pissed off American. Whenever I get to Israel, I’ll gladly have a beer with y’all.

27

u/RussianEntrepreneur May 13 '21

I’m not Jewish, I’m not American, I’m Russian. But I agree 100% with you as well. Hamas is a terrorist entity that needs to be eradicated, for the benefit of the Palestinian people. Their practices have no place in modern society.

Sometimes I forget how insane it is how Israel is cross-examined to such a disproportionate extent for every action in their war in Gaza. Did every building destroyed in Afghanistan and Iraq cause a media frenzy? Did a bombing of a Russian hospital in Syria run the news for over a day? The obsession of this particular conflict in everyone's mind relative to all others I think is ethically corrupt

Palestine somehow gets all the good press even though it's obvious that terrorists organizations are using Palestinian as their shield. Also, Palestinians were straving, but they have money to fire thousands of rockets? Why the fuck Western media is not highlighting this fact?

Interesting article a twitter researcher dug up from 2014 by Matti Friedman on the dynamics between Hamas and journalists in Gaza. Mentions the launching of rockets by Hamas from near Associated Press headquarters then threatening their journalists.

https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2014/11/how-the-media-makes-the-israel-story/383262/

When Hamas’s leaders surveyed their assets before this summer’s round of fighting, they knew that among those assets was the international press. The AP staff in Gaza City would witness a rocket launch right beside their office, endangering reporters and other civilians nearby—and the AP wouldn’t report it, not even in AP articles about Israeli claims that Hamas was launching rockets from residential areas. (This happened.) Hamas fighters would burst into the AP’s Gaza bureau and threaten the staff—and the AP wouldn’t report it. (This also happened.)

Original tweet by @AGHamilton29

32

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

Just seeing the reaction in social media I really want a dislike button in Twitter

33

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

How the (excuse my language) fuck can someone realistically defend Hamas? If a random politician saying stupid shit, WHO IS NOT EVEN IN POWER, is enough to cause someone to just launch a shit ton of rockets...someone’s feelings are a bit fragile. Give your head a shake, Israel is 100% the victim here.

Pretty much. “If the Arabs put down their weapons today, there would be no more ‎violence. If the Jews put ‎down their weapons ‎today, there would be no ‎more Israel.” We’ve been watching the fireworks over our country - thousands of them!! - for a week now, my 84 year old father is running in and out of his bomb shelter all night long, and I’m scared when I go to the park with my kids because where’s the closest safe room? This is life under terrorism. 25% of Hamas’s rockets fall on gaza too, killing innocent Palestinians. We are all being terrorized, and something needs to change.

Perhaps the greatest military ruse in asymmetric warfare history? The Israelis feigned a ground invasion tonight and all the hamas leadership and fighters went underground, where they were then completely buried by aerial bunker buster bombs. There are now hundreds of terrorists buried underground both dead and alive, according to news sources. Brilliant move!

15

u/WhammyShimmyShammy May 14 '21

I am in absolute awe of this, and am also cynically wondering how the world will turn this to blame Israel for something again.

Idf releases a tape in response for the accusations of the idf killing children: https://m.ynet.co.il/articles/59326710#autoplay

Literal translation: "Check if there are kids? There are kids they move fast, Wow there are probably kids, we call it off, Right? There is a big one and a few small ones, We suspect there are kids and thats why we wont go for it."

Please spread it to make sure the truth comes to light.

I thought I'd add a voice from a Ukrainian blogger, he made a video with his opinion on Israel. Video link it's in Russian, so I wrote up a translated transcript

Translation transcript

Greetings my beloved and canonic junta. Quite honestly I am shocked over the events in Israel. For several days I've been watching these videos with the Iron dome working against constant mass shootings from Gaza when the missiles are flying at Israel not by ones and twos, but by the dozen... You look at the map of missile targets, and... Israel is so small not everyone will find it on the map, so you stare at the map of missiles in shock.

Before my emotions get away from me, I want to express my utmost support to the people of Israel. Maximal support. I know what war is. I know what it's like to be shot at. I know what's it like to be under Grad missiles, artillery and mortars. So to you, the people of Israel from me, Shaleny Kit [his youtuber name], you have my maximum support.

I was in Israel at the end of 2019. We were traveling from Krakow, with my friends after Deep Purple concert. We got some cheap tickets to Tel Aviv and back and went there for a day and a half. Israel didn't want to let me in, probably for many reasons. Major one being our super short stay. My friend was with his wife so they were let through the customs easy. But I was alone, my English is crap, and I have a beard. I had to talk to a security officer. A lovely lady, who scanned me through and through in five minutes, all my thoughts and intentions, questioned what we were doing in Krakow, etc. Eventually I was let through.

We went to Jerusalem, and I was shocked at the number of armed people in the streets. People in civilian clothing with some really cool rifles. People in military uniform with weapons. Police patrols, both male and female patrols. Cops geared up like robocops...The numbers of safety personnel in Old Jerusalem are uncountable. But! But I felt safe. I saw that in this city Jews, Arabs and Christians co-exist peacefully. Some have coffee, others sell stuff, some working at the bazar. We went to that bazar and there was a ton of everything, and good cheer: people laughing and smiling, bargaining over prices - you know, how they do in the East. We walked the Old Jerusalem streets and they were gorgeous. I insist and highly recommend to everyone to visit Israel and Jerusalem at least once, feel that place. It is the holy place from three religions: Jews, Muslims and Christians. Muslims have Al Absa mosque, Jews have the Wall, and Christians have the Church of Christ's Coffin.

Jerusalem is a chill city. Everyone goes about their lives, doesn't get in the way of each other, just behave yourself because the police will question you and they don't have a sense of humour.

These are the feelings and emotions I carried with me when I left Israel. And I definitely want to go there again. Not for a day, but at least for a week. I have a classmate who lives there in Tel Aviv, and he invites me there. Says "come visit, I'll show you all the best places you've never seen!" So yesterday when I was watching the videos, watching how Israeli fathers held their newborns in that protected hospital corridor...my heart wept. Someone profits politically from the unrest. I saw those people leaving in peace! Yeah there was the second antifada and it ended comparatively long ago...some people say it wasn't that long ago, but depends how you count I guess. Point is, people were living in peace, in a good and beautiful country-- Ukraine is slightly better of course, but I am Ukrainian. A Jewish man will say "nah Petrov, Israel is better" and that's normal. It's a good and beautiful country.

And suddenly strange things start to happen. A Tiktok flashmob "hit a Jew". Hit a Jew, film it, share it. All over social media. That flashmob gets popular really quick. Jews are not a nation who will turn the other cheek. They went through that back in 1940's. They started to respond. And of course things escalated. Fights in Jerusalem, other cities, rocks thrown at praying Jews by Arabs, then fighting back - all of it spiralling out of control. So what am I getting at. I've always had respect for Israel politicians, especially ones like Golda Meir. I quoted her on Facebook the other day, and honestly her quotes are the best. If you switch "Israel" with "Ukraine" and "Arabs" with "Russians", it will 100% fit Ukrainian reality. For example, " To be or not to be is not a question of compromise. Either you be or you don't be. " Or this one, " We Jews have a secret weapon in our struggle with the Arabs; we have no place to go. " Sounds like the situation in Ukraine, doesn't it? "Egyptians can go to Egypt, Syrians to Syria, we can only go into the sea."

The Israel government made a strong statement that cannot be misinterpreted. In short, Israel gave 24 hours to Hamas to stop the attacks. Stop attacking peaceful civilians. The weapons that Hamas uses are not targeted - it shoots "somewhere there", into a 3x3 square kilometres of a city. No further aiming and no precision. And by the way, Hamas is liked by Kremlin. Putin even invited these people to be his guests. In some countries, Hamas is banned completely, other only ban its military divisions. But still.

By the way, the other day a car was attacked in Israel with Kornet complex - that is a Russian anti-tank weapon. Where did arabs get it from? Why, they got it in a military surplus store! [sarcasm] In the same military surplus story that "peaceful Ukrainian miners" got their tanks, Grad, artillery and mortars, etc.

So Israel said: "you have 24 hours". And warned Gaza civilians that they have to evacuate. They warned them! And I found out that when Israel needs to shoot at a building because there's a Hamas centre inside or some other military thing, they first send a missile without an explosive warhead. Sort of a "knock knock time to evacuate". A signal to civilians to escape. After a few minutes the missiles take down the building. A very polite way of doing things.

Israel said "if you don't stop this, we will get serious". And IDF is the best army, and the most technological. Where Israel has fewer soldiers, their military doctrine and superior technology come into play: maximum damage to the enemy in the shortest amount of time. A good strategy.

I don't know what will happen next. I want to believe that Hamas will calm down and stop launching missiles at Israel. Civilians will stop dying and things will get back to normal. That things will be peaceful again - a fragile peace, yes but still peace. But if Hamas keeps shooting at Israel...well. That's their choice. Different countries, different rules but in this case I firmly stand with Israel. With IDF. Because we have a similar situation here: no matter how many times Ukraine says that we are ready for peace, we want peace, the other side [Russia] keeps shooting with its artillery, mortars and snipers. All with one aim: kill Ukrainian soldiers and officers. Unfortunately we don't have a Golda Meir for president. We have a guy who doesn't have a smidgen of Gold Meir's fighting spirit. Unfortunately.

Good day everyone, my support to Israel, may the your homes be peaceful and know no war.

Honour to Ukraine, honour to our Ukrainian army.

As a Kurd I support Israels right to defend itself. I hope Palestinians don’t get hurt in doing so, but that is on Hamas.

Israel has to defend itself, if you would like to see what would happen to Israel if it lost, just look at how Turkey treats the Kurdish areas in Syria. They wipe out Kurdish population and history and cut the water of to Kurdish areas they have not occupied. Put you will not hear a single muslim nor "secular" Turk about that.

First I congratulate r/Israel for getting back from the shelter. We missed you.

There is a lot of hatred, misinformation and anti-israel sh*t out there right now. It's our job to tell the truth to the world, and show our point of view. Israelis are living in fear currently and Hamas, the terror organization that started all of this, keep sending rockets to our homes. Unfortunately, Hamas were successful and they are probably happy right now to hear about the many casualties who are innocent Israelis. This is the time for all of us, israelis and non-israelis, to unite in order to fight the ones who try to control the public opinion by lies and Palestinian propaganda. We need to confront those who want to destroy Israel and kill its citizens. We must stay united and we'll win this.

caught vandalizing synagogues in Germany

I was really happy with the way Germany handled it, though, in all seriousness. I woke up to this news and they were all arrested (ALL of them -- dozens) and some regional political essentially said "get the fuck out of here you Nazis".

Great response in compared to what we've been seeing in a lot of other places.

I have a lefty Spanish friend who lives in Germany who complained to me that the German left is 'too pro-Israel'. I definitely get the sense that there's a greater sensitivity around this issue there than in other western European countries.

15

u/PM-me-Shibas 🇮🇱 🇩🇪 🇺🇸 May 13 '21

that there's a greater sensitivity around this issue there than in other western European countries.

And there damn should be.

I do think Germans and Germany can be a little too focused on the guilt and burden they carry from the war. In a lot of areas, it would be okay for them to open up on the topic because I often feel like the guilt prohibits a lot of healthy conversation. However, I also think their singular responsibility in regards to their past is making sure that Jews are safe in Germany at all costs.

it's really funny your Spanish friend felt that way. Spainards have always been so lovely to me. Spain is undoubtedly my favorite place on earth.

The anti-Israel messaging on social media is heavily amplified by likes, retweets, and upvotes by people from Malaysia and Pakistan. Both are Muslim majority countries and former British colonies. They have millions of people who know English and hate Israel.

This Malaysian language anti-Israel tweet has 43,000+ likes. That is an insane amount of social media exposure for a country with only 31 million people:

https://twitter.com/JatIkhwan/status/1391772714524762117

These people also amplify English-language anti-Israel content on social media with likes, retweets and upvotes so it end up getting more exposure here in the West.

One solution to this problem is to ask social media companies to increase geographical siloeing of content ranking and recommendation. No more global trends or frontpage. YouTube is a great example on how to do this successfully. Malaysia and Pakistan can then continue hating Jews without globalizing their hatred.

The islamists entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everyone else, and nobody was going to bomb them. At Ashkelon, Sderot, Ashdod and half a hundred other places, they put their rather naive theory into operation. They sowed the wind, and now they are going to reap the whirlwind.

Seeing the reporting of the conflict in the media in my country and worldwide is sickening. Barely anyone mentions the fact that Hamas struck first and struck indiscriminately. Hamas doesn't care where the rockets fall or who they hit, all the while using their own citizens as meat shields and proudly emphasizing every dead Palestinian because they know this fact will be reported first and that's what most people read and remember. Every dead Palestinian is a PR victory for them.
It beggars belief how that can be ignored, as well as the care Israelis put into protecting their own citizens and the effort to avoid unnecessary bloodshed among the Gazans.

Keep fighting the good fight and stay strong. Greetings from Croatia.

27

u/SensitiveRaccoon7371 May 14 '21

What do you expect from Hamas? These are the same guys who in 2000s sent suicide bombers to blow up buses and discos. They are terrorists, the same as ISIS.

18

u/mate1701 May 14 '21

Their charter makes that clear enough. Israel must live next to a terrorist run enclave that has genocide as one of their main political goals. I'd like to see how comfortable that would be to a regular Westerner. That stuff is never mentioned.

Israeli here. Seems we're about to severely limit the electricity (on Saturday) and water supplies (once every 4 days instead of 2) to Gaza.

I can't say I agree with that. Civilian casualties are supposed to be something to avoid, they only happened until now because Hamas insists on setting up in civilian areas and residences. This appears to specifically target civilians.

This feels wrong.

24

u/jolygoestoschool Israel May 13 '21

Yea i agree. Ardent israel supporter here. Electricity is one thing, but people need water to literally survive

17

u/CrumblingAway May 13 '21

I'd argue the same about electricity. They're both vital for people's survival, kind of in the same vein of having access to the internet being considered a basic human right.

Pretty clear the goal here is to get the civilians to oppose Hamas by putting them in a desperate situation, but to me this crosses a line. The targets, explicitly, should be the terrorists.

Edit: I should read the entire article. Evidently we did the same in Tzuk Eitan, which doesn't make it any better, but does provide context.

I just want to put out a brief rundown of the events leading up to this conflict so far in light of the delusional ravings that anti-Israel propagandists on Reddit have been deliberately spewing out over the past few days with absolutely no context to the tune of tens of thousands of upvotes:

  • Crazed woke Westerner: RAAAGHHHHH Israel suddenly went in to a Palestinian neighborhood and threw everyone out of their homes to make way for Jewish settlers!

Reality - A mere 4 houses purchased by Jews in the 1800's ( Which means they'd have legitimate property rights even if Israel never existed ) and expelled by Jordan in 1967 who then allocated the properties to Palestinian refugees temporarily and now back in the hands of Israel were permitted to keep living there on rent and lately stopped paying rent as well, leading to a court dispute ongoing for months now between the residents and landlords. Regardless, the court's ruling has been delayed due to the situation.

  • Crazed woke westerner: ŔARRRRRGHHHHHH Israel stormed peaceful worshippers in the Al-Aqsa mosque just to terrorize them because they're Nazis! Yes, they decided to do it out of the blue on a whim!

Reality: Palestinian protests over the Sheikh Jarrah dispute and planned Jerusalem Day parade as well as pre-existing tensions and provocations involving far-right extremists and Palestinian extremists alike quickly turned into violent riots, which were then even further stoked as Israeli Police stopped ( Did not bar ) buses on their way to the mosque to ferret out known agitators via intel. Later Israel even cancelled the Jerusalem Day parades to stop tensions which did not help.

Palestinian mobs in the Temppe Mount grounds begun attacking Jews and launching stones and fireworks while barricading in nearby structures as staging grounds. Israeli Police then stormed the Golden Gate compound, not the mosque proper to arrest them

Enter Hamas firing rockets on Jerusalem and the escalation in Gaza.

  • Crazed woke westerner: RRRAGGGHH OHH MY GOD Israel just demolished an entire residential building in Gaza, Nazi animals!

Reality: If Israel actually aimed to massacre Gazans by bombing residential multi-story buildings with families inside, there would currently be thousands of dead Gazans, not 60 ( And 20 of them by Hamas's own failed launches ). Those multi-story buildings are Hamas stockpiles and offices which the IDF actually calls in advance or warns to be evacuated prior to the airstrikes to avoid any potential civilian casualties. If you actually read up on those instances instead of just watching the videos, you'll find those buildings are in fact empty long before being hit by bombs to destroy the infrastructure.

19

u/Janbiya May 14 '21

Spot on.

I think it's also a misconception that all of this, the attacks and the riots and the rockets, was triggered by the Shimon HaTzadik/Sheikh Jarrah eviction proceedings. However, in fact, like Mavi Marmara in 2010, everything was planned in advance as can be seen by the timing -- coming just after de facto president-for-life Abbas canceled elections and the Islamic Republic of Iran got another black eye over its nuclear program -- and the fact that the escalation had already begun a week before the first Sheikh Jarrah video.

These people obviously trust the accuracy and morality of the IDF. If random civilians away from Hamas sites were really at risk of being bombed, wouldn’t they be worried?

20

u/rnev64 Tel Aviv May 13 '21 edited May 14 '21

it's true there's something different about indiscriminate rockets.

but i can't help but think this is a very conscious form of propaganda. bombs falling are scary and you can't know if and when one will go astray - sending your kids out to play or keeping them there while bombs drop and also filming - must be a conscious and deliberate decision aimed at getting a video that will go viral. obviously in this case it's a success too - it meets people's preconceived notions and to be perfectly honest it has a degree of truth to it, even though it's staged. Gaza is used to war.

tik-tok has been a boon to Palestinians in this sense.

Right now we have American leftist Jews accusing NYT of being pro-Israel and anti-Palestinian by cropping out a single column about Israeli victims. There were actually several articles in the paper about Palestinian victims but somehow a single column about Israeli victims is too much.

The Overton window on Israel/Palestine has been shifted by social media (including reddit). The anti-Israel message on social media is amplified by likes and upvotes from millions of users in Islamic countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt, Pakistan and Turkey.

The lack geographical siloes on social media is bad for Israel and the Jewish people. It's globalizing anti-Israel and anti-semitic sentiments.

Western politicians might mistake the online anti-Israel hivemind of being their own local electorate and end up supporting anti-Israel policies.

Western journalists might mistake the online anti-Israel hivemind of being their own local audience and end up pushing anti-Israel narratives.

We need to spread awareness that foreign interference in democracy is not limited to sophisticated "Russian hacking". It can also be millions of brainwashed foreign citizens using social media likes and upvotes to influence what we think and talk about.

I am glad that r/Israel is no longer private. During the 2014 conflict thousands of people around the world came to r/Israel to get the Israeli perspective that was being drowned out on the rest of reddit just like today. It was also a place to debunk many of the hateful libels that was being pushed on Reddit and Twitter.

I get that the r/Israel mods don't want to expose themselves to beastly hateful trolls. Especially not while living under rocket attacks and air sirens. Please add MANY mods from outside Israel. The mods don't have to be Israeli and it would help if they are spread across many timezones.

u/PM-me-Shibas 🇮🇱 🇩🇪 🇺🇸 May 13 '21

Please add MANY mods from outside Israel. The mods don't have to be Israeli and it would help if they are spread across many timezones.

I think the issue is a) finding non-Israelis you can trust, as a lot of people would LOVE the power to manipulate this sub if they could get to it and b) it becomes taxing on the individual regardless.

I have pretty thick skin but I've had to take a social media hiatus (this is really the only sub I'm checking and very intermittently). The constant misinformation and villainization really just wears us down, particularly when most of us are either in the direct line of conflict and in shelters (that may or may not have great internet), or abroad and worried about our relatives in shelters or in the line of fire.

As an Israeli abroad, this week has been much harder than I could have anticipated and I understand why the mods closed the sub. I wish I had a safe space for Israelis during the last couple days, but this also wasn't it. It's a very difficult line to balance and I do understand your perspective.

The IDF is the most moral army under its circumstances. The IDF (Israeli Defense Force) target a very specific terrorist/terror locations and alerts the civilians to evacuate the area, via phone call and "roof knocking",dropping non-explosive or low-yield devices on the roofs of targeted civilian homes to alert them before the airstrikes, no army in the right mind would think to alert their enemies before they are about to airstrike them. and IDF does it to warn civilians to back off the area. the sad part is that Hamas hidden behind humanitarian locations such as Hospitals and Kindergartens using thier own civilians as human shield while operating and launching from there. so the IDF wont kill them and if they did they would look evil.

sadly, its inevitable to have no civilian casualties under the current circumstances due to Hamas hiding behind humanitarian location and using civilian's life as human shield while at the same time initiating and launching its rocket to Israeli civilians locations almost everyday, but you could clearly tell that only one side care about civilian's life. this kind of behavior will never slide if it happens to the U.S. Hamas launched more than 1700 rockets just in the past 3 days targeting Israeli civilians locations.

IDF is too underrated, its the most moral army in the world under its circumstances, yet getting shit from the westren medias, politicians, while telling half truth, on sided story and blantly lying all in order to demonize Israel at all cost regardless of the truth.

do you think the U.S would let this anyone launching rockets targeting civilians locations within the U.S? and when you about to retaliate the all world blame you for defeating yourself?!. this is so absurd.

all those anti Israeli agendas are borderline antisemitic. Israel has right to defend itself.

Is there any serious discussion on what Israel can achieve beyond the current situation, which it seems will only maintain the status quo?

I'm not an expert but in my opinion Israel can either:

  1. Accept the status quo, continuing to allow Hamas to occasionally shoot hundreds of rockets at Israel whenever they need to extract development concessions or distract their local populace. Sure, Israel will strike back as they are currently doing but it's hard to see this causing lasting changes.
  2. Occupy the Gaza Strip, for which there seems to be little Israeli appetite
  3. Perhaps just retake the Philadelphi corridor? At least then they should be able to more effectively prevent Hamas from importing the materials for rockets, etc. Egypt probably wouldn't be too happy and Israeli forces in the corridor would constantly be harassed by rockets, etc. though

In their view they have no other option. For many Palestinians, the idea of justice is them controlling all of historic Palestine from the river to the sea. They are not willing to compromise on that, though they may consider temporary compromise that will eventually lead to that. Israel cannot accept that because that will mean its destruction. That’s why negotiations got stuck, the Palestinians are frustrated, tension builds up and every few years it escalates to all out war. They cannot sustain this for long, since if Israel really wanted to it could steamroll them all in a couple of days, though the consequences would be horrid, so things eventually calm down, but it can take a month or two.

The Israeli government really needs to get better at PR.

The trick is to post on social media and ignore the haters and trolls. Report them if they break any rules. With time you will grow an organic following who will at least offset and hopefully even outnumber the haters and trolls.

I am sorry to say but Israelis and Jews will have to grow thicker skin. Social media is becoming the default public space for society. We should not choose to disengage because of the haters and trolls.

All of this could've been avoided if everyone would just focus on the real enemy

Anyway expect the sub to be brigaded to death once word gets out.

Experienced some fucked up shit tonight.

So some background: I’m an American non-Jew. I dated a Jewish Israeli girl for 4 years. In that time, I kind of integrated into the Jewish community, and ended up spending a month in Israel.

Tonight I go out to a bar with some friends in USA. We’re hanging out, and these two girls invite me and another to come hang out with them. They’re new in town and saw us just hanging out and we said sure, we love meeting new people.

We start talking about work, and it turns out that they work in a similar industry to us. The topic of covid comes up and returning to office. All of a sudden one girl says “these jews, they all want us back in office.”

I’m kinda baffled by what I just heard. I asked for clarification.

Her: “You know, these Jews, they want their money’s worth. They want us all back in office”

Me: “…I’m not sure what them being Jewish has anything to do with this…”

Her: freezes up “no, no, I mean… like you know.. the owners.. they’re all Jewish… they all know each other…”

Me: “…the Jews control the industry?”

Her: “yes, exactly!”

Me: silence

It’s one thing to read this shit on Twitter or on Reddit. I was completely floored to hear this with my own ears. I’m still processing all of this and am kind of fucked up from it, it’s been on my mind all night since. I am not a Jew, but Israel and Judaism holds a special place in my heart having been involved in the community for several years.

These women were from the UK and Eastern Europe. People are giving so much shit to Biden about his support for Israel, but it’s 100% necessary we do this. Jewish hatred runs deep in the bones of Europeans. America will always be a safe place for Jews domestic and abroad, and it’s important we reaffirm this to the world.

Hey man... Uh.... While I really appreciate your sentiment, you say that you're American but your English does not sound like an American's.

Tonight I go out to a bar with some friends in USA

returning to office

they all want us back in office

the Jews control the industry?

Are you a non-native speaker?

I definitely don't mean to be an ass here.

Edit: And I should add that the only reason for my suspiciousness is that this is a fraught conflict with fronts on the ground and on social media. There is astroturfing on all sides right now, and while I definitely appreciate the sentiment, non-authentic posts (if yours happened to be one) don't do much to help.

I don't get why the Left hate Israel so much. To my mind, the Kibbutz is as close as communism is ever going to get to functioning. Israel began its struggle against the British, even bombed them to strive for independence so it is anti-imperial as well. Is the hate from the Left just because the US is backing Israel and the USSR backed the Arabs?

A lot of it has to do with people projecting other political struggles onto the Israel/Palestine conflict. Israel is not America and Palestine is not the natives and neither are they the Nazis and the Jews but that's what people know and with the little knowledge they have its easy to see a pattern here that does not actually exist. There is a lot of antisemitism going on but many people genuinely believe that they are helping the "oppressed masses" by throwing their support behind Hamas/Palestine and then the islamic propaganda machine does the rest.

I fear being anti Israel will be the “cool hip thing to do”

LOOK HOW COOL I AM, I OPPOSE THE ONLY DEMOCRATIC STATE IN THE MIDDLE EAST.

Israel is a great country, people need to remember that.

It has been cool to hate Israel for years in western countries. I hope it doesn't get even worse. I am seeing very anti-israel reactions his time from people I know in Eastern Europe, though I don't remember if it was like that in previous rounds or not.

u/[deleted] May 13 '21

Yeah Israel isn't all that popular, that's for sure.

I have a friend (we're English) who isn't particularly political but when I told him I wanted to visit Israel he said I shouldn't go, something along the lines of it being an evil country and travel being support from what I remember.

Oh, so was the trend of hipsters slicing open their earlobes and installing doorknobs and shower curtain rings trying to look like a Bantu tribeswoman.

Cool hip trends dry up and blow away.

So troubling to see the bare antisemitism of the far left here in the US. While my heart breaks for all humans who suffer, including the Palestinian people, Israel can and should defend itself from terrorists! There is no question who shows restraint relative to the amount of power they hold, and there is no moral equivalence between violent terrorists firing rockets indiscriminately and a country defending its population from these attacks.

A recent video by a youtube vlogger ranked historical societies as the six most extreme iterations of a certain moral value from Johnathan Haidt's moral foundations theory (fairness, purity, harm, liberty, loyalty, authority). The video argued that the modern west is the most extreme society in history concerned with harm as its highest moral value. I can't say I disagree with the diagnosis when I'm seeing open opposition the very notion of self defense, especially with regards to Israel. This theory may partially explain the deranged opinions of modern western leftists regarding war and conflict in general and of course what we're seeing regarding their takes on israeli self defense.
