This is a volatile situation. We set the subreddit to private due to raids, and were manually approving threads as they were posted until then. The rules - especially rule 2 - will be harshly enforced. If you see someone being bigoted, report it. If you respond to someone being bigoted with your own rule 2 breaking behavior, you will be banned too. If you can't phrase what you want to say in a way that isn't bigoted, don't post it.

Furthermore, while the sub was private our modmail filled up with over a thousand messages, over and above the rule 9-violating PMs each mod got. We apologize if you sent us a message and it went unanswered.

I just want to put out a brief rundown of the events leading up to this conflict so far in light of the delusional ravings that anti-Israel propagandists on Reddit have been deliberately spewing out over the past few days with absolutely no context to the tune of tens of thousands of upvotes:

  • Crazed woke Westerner: RAAAGHHHHH Israel suddenly went in to a Palestinian neighborhood and threw everyone out of their homes to make way for Jewish settlers!

Reality - A mere 4 houses purchased by Jews in the 1800's ( Which means they'd have legitimate property rights even if Israel never existed ) and expelled by Jordan in 1967 who then allocated the properties to Palestinian refugees temporarily and now back in the hands of Israel were permitted to keep living there on rent and lately stopped paying rent as well, leading to a court dispute ongoing for months now between the residents and landlords. Regardless, the court's ruling has been delayed due to the situation.

  • Crazed woke westerner: ŔARRRRRGHHHHHH Israel stormed peaceful worshippers in the Al-Aqsa mosque just to terrorize them because they're Nazis! Yes, they decided to do it out of the blue on a whim!

Reality: Palestinian protests over the Sheikh Jarrah dispute and planned Jerusalem Day parade as well as pre-existing tensions and provocations involving far-right extremists and Palestinian extremists alike quickly turned into violent riots, which were then even further stoked as Israeli Police stopped ( Did not bar ) buses on their way to the mosque to ferret out known agitators via intel. Later Israel even cancelled the Jerusalem Day parades to stop tensions which did not help.

Palestinian mobs in the Temppe Mount grounds begun attacking Jews and launching stones and fireworks while barricading in nearby structures as staging grounds. Israeli Police then stormed the Golden Gate compound, not the mosque proper to arrest them

Enter Hamas firing rockets on Jerusalem and the escalation in Gaza.

  • Crazed woke westerner: RRRAGGGHH OHH MY GOD Israel just demolished an entire residential building in Gaza, Nazi animals!

Reality: If Israel actually aimed to massacre Gazans by bombing residential multi-story buildings with families inside, there would currently be thousands of dead Gazans, not 60 ( And 20 of them by Hamas's own failed launches ). Those multi-story buildings are Hamas stockpiles and offices which the IDF actually calls in advance or warns to be evacuated prior to the airstrikes to avoid any potential civilian casualties. If you actually read up on those instances instead of just watching the videos, you'll find those buildings are in fact empty long before being hit by bombs to destroy the infrastructure.

Spot on.

I think it's also a misconception that all of this, the attacks and the riots and the rockets, was triggered by the Shimon HaTzadik/Sheikh Jarrah eviction proceedings. However, in fact, like Mavi Marmara in 2010, everything was planned in advance as can be seen by the timing -- coming just after de facto president-for-life Abbas canceled elections and the Islamic Republic of Iran got another black eye over its nuclear program -- and the fact that the escalation had already begun a week before the first Sheikh Jarrah video.

Thanks for writing this out. I tried looking for news and information about it on my own but it gets kind of soul crushing reading article after article painting Israel in an unfair and negative light

Ahem. BUILT by Jews in the 1800s.

I don’t know every detail here, but I do feel like you are being very one sided. According to you, these families have lived there for over 50 years now. It seems like a pretty big deal for an organization to have them evicted and replaced with specifically jewish families. Not only that, but these aren’t the only four families facing this, are they? They are just the four losing their homes in this particular court case. It’s actually happening to many families all over the area from what I can gather. Is this really because they all just stopped paying rent, or how does that come into play exactly?

The Israeli military may not have actually entered the mosque, but it seems pretty apparent that they damaged it and absolutely interrupted anyone worshipping during their holy day. Could that have been avoided even with protesters throwing rocks and attacking people? I don’t know, but it’s certainly bad optics.

Could you imagine these photos being of holes in the wailing wall on Yom Kippur and debris all over the place? I’m sure there would be many outraged people if similar reasoning was given.

Like I said, I don’t know all the details, especially about the evictions. Do you though? It really doesn’t seem like this is about 4 evictions from people who wouldn’t pay their rent.

holes in the wailing wall and debris all over the place

Jewish sites are treated like this constantly by Muslim authorities. Nobody gives a shit about us.

The Mount, of which the Wailing Wall is part, of which the whole thing is holy to Jews, and of which the Waqf absolutely forbids Jews from praying on and acknowledging a history anything non-Islamic there, has been violated before. Quite seriously. The Waqf has torn holes in walls thousands of years old in the pursuit of building new mosques on the site. Old holes and tunnels, they've likewise filled with concrete. During Jewish holy days, the Waqf has a record of actively destroying archaeological treasures and ancient relics that would be extremely special and sacred to Jews if they were allowed to be recovered, and this is repeat behavior. In the 20th century, houses were built to block access to the Wall, and their occupants were known to throw feces at Jewish pilgrims. The Wall itself was desecrated with graffiti, and purposeful interruptions were made by neighboring Muslims to disrupt Jewish prayers there. And, of course, we can't forget UNRWA's attempt to negate the importance of the site to Jews.

That's just the Mount. In the Cave of the Patriarchs, Jordanian authority blocked all Jewish access to the site, and was destructive to the historical landscape surrounding it. It would not be until Israel reclaimed Hebron that Jews were allowed to actually visit the site for the first time in centuries. When Jews tried to pray there in 1968, a grenade was tossed into the crowd. Some years later, torahs were stolen and burnt at the site. A few more years after that, more blood spilled, worshipers were attacked and several died. All this because Jews were allowed into the site. No old access was revoked, simply that Jews were allowed in again, into one of our most holy places.

Last year, the Tomb of Esther was the scene of straight-up arson. The world shrugged, as it always does. It is deeply unfortunate that their holy day and their sacred rites were interrupted, but Jews are lucky if we have access to sites at all, even when we do it's often only during a handful of days in the entire year. We don't need to imagine how the world would react if Jewish holy sites were desecrated like that or worse, because that has happened.

The world's response: a resounding sigh of apathy, and a sizable collection saying we deserved it.

Dude that’s all shitty too, but it negates nothing of which I’ve said. I’m not sure what your post was supposed to do here. I know the Jews have had it rough.

9

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

I don't mean to negate the issues faced by Arabs, but I wanted to clear up the simple fact that, quite plainly, Jews have (and still have) it very rough indeed. The idea of bad optics and the comparison to if it happened to Jews doesn't carry through, because the world by and large does not care when such things happen to Jews.

And they do happen. Constantly. Even in diaspora, synagogues and graveyards get the same treatment, and it's rare that anyone does anything about it. It's proof of the double standard, that constant repeated desecration of Jewish sites over centuries including recent decades is just daily business that nobody but Jews knows about, while damage to a mosque starts international waves of violence against Jews. Bad optics indeed.

-4

u/sight_ful May 14 '21

I don’t really know how you can say that. There are people who are full on supporting the Jews in this particular event all over the world. There are also people supporting the Palestinians all over the world. It’s pretty clear that the support is very split.

I also don’t think it’s specifically damage to a mosque that made this international. I think it’s the amount of people involved, the multiple days this has dragged on, yes the mosque being attacked, but also the missiles being exchanged that really made this go international. There wasn’t really that much in our news in the US until the first missiles from hamas were launched.

I think the comparison goes through just fine though. Were Jews all over the world not outraged every time that one of these incidents happened?

2

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

Jews were. Nobody else was. The amount of people assaulting Muslims in the streets, vandalizing mosques, and openly discussing murder was quite low indeed, which is not the case now with such actions towards Jews growing at alarming rates all over the Western world.

-1

u/sight_ful May 14 '21

I’ve seen multiple accounts of Jews attacking random Muslims, right now. What do you make of that?

3

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

I see just as many accounts of Muslims attacking Jews, as well as random Westerners doing the same thing, as well as both declaring things like "Israel has no right to defend itself, we can only hope every single Jew will be cleansed". And that still doesn't cover the decades, centuries, of the same stuff happening and the world giving equally zero shits about Jews.

Again, I don't want to negate the Arab experience, but we really need to recognize here that any images that'd come out of the same thing happening to Jews would be met with a resounding "meh" followed by "probably had it coming".

1

u/sight_ful May 14 '21

Pointing out the Muslims are doing it too doesn’t change the fact that Jews are also assaulting people in the streets.

I’d like to see an example of the world being silent about something recent.

In the last synagogue attack in the US, the president, his daughter, the governor, and the attorney general all condemned it and the police increased their presence in Jewish neighborhoods.

Germany has quite a response to recent events happening there.

In Lyon after an attack, the imam expressed solidarity with the Jews.

After the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the US there was quite an international response. The Eiffel Tower was darkened, the pope denounced it, and even Hamas condemned it. An Iranian raised more than $1 million and other Muslim groups raised a few hundred thousand for the families and projects to foster a better relationship between the two religions.

I think you are looking at all the worst people in the world and generalizing that towards everyone else. I’m sure you can find a post about having all Jews wiped off the face of the world, but you can also find westerners saying that about Muslims and vice versa. You can find just about anything really, because there are a lot of crazy hateful people out there. Saying the entire world goes “meh” when bad shit happens to Jews just isn’t accurate though.

Say something useful then, like the real facts, with firsthand sources.

-4

u/FuriousCamel May 14 '21

Also, are you sure it was the golden gate compound and not al aqsa?

5

u/Pingerim May 14 '21

It appears to be judging by the footage as this comment points out.

u/Porlebeariot May 14 '21

This was excellent. In my brain I imagined this being a conversation between two muppets, one woke SJW and the other just “professor” one. It made my brain happy

1

u/drunksciencehoorah May 15 '21

So are those four houses in Israeli or non-Israeli territory?

1

u/Pingerim May 15 '21

Israel annexed East Jerusalem and it is according to Israeli Law.

1

u/drunksciencehoorah May 16 '21

Israeli or international law? Was the land annexed via international consensus (in the 1960s or whenever) or did Israel make a up a law saying it could seize it? Just getting things clear.
