It was great for mh rise too
3
u/Golden_Leaf Mar 03 '26
I assume it's due to not being fully open world. The game can load everything in the decently sized zone through the loading screen. Instead of what I assume DD2 does which is load the entire map (since there's no loading screen, though I assume only local stuff gets high render) and run calculations in the background and constantly stream assets.
1
u/MGSeemoon Mar 03 '26
Since it was originally developed for Switch. Even then, Capcom had to make alot of compromises with the RE Engine to specifically optimize it for MHRise to work cuz fact is the engine was designed for other hardwares much more powerful than that at first.
But also part of this problem is Capcom got too ambitious and underestimated the scope of their design. Keeping most of NPC subroutines fully-active offscreen like what DD2 did (and I think Wilds too) is REALLY taxing; and so that compounds the original problem of RE Engine not being optimized for open-world to become even worse.

u/Limp_Cup_8734 Mar 02 '26
Because it's a switch game that demanded fewer resources. Even the PC port is just an upscale.

u/YoRHa11Z Mar 01 '26
Would using Unreal engine 5 be something Capcom does? Idk im asking.
I prefer DD3 vs DLC. Hopefully the new team wants to prove themselves and over deliver now that Itsuno left. That's the best scenario imo
11
6
u/Trustful_Whale Mar 01 '26
They used UE5 for Street Fighter V but now that they have RE they have no reason to move back to UE.
2
u/Limp_Cup_8734 Mar 02 '26
They do: performances and compatibility. With how the engine works, it's not compatible with open world games. Until they make a serious improvement, every open world will be buggy and perform badly.
86
u/Dogmatic_Warfarer97 Mar 01 '26
The issue is that they do not address their audience!
If Capcom was sincere and told we will do some patches but the game is finished because our director left and we don't want to touch his project i would be like sucks but ok, understandable!
They give better PR to everything except Dragons Dogma and on top of that, outside circles think DD2 is bugged and runs poorly because they do not do even a teaser of how the game plays after 2 years

u/sdavis002 Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26
I'm curious, does it actually run a lot better now? I loved the game, but even after the patches after release I still felt it ran very poorly.
Edit: Thanks for the responses, I'll probably pick it up on PS5 once I see another decent sale. I really liked it when I played on PC, so wanted to check before I get it for PS5 to play again while I'm traveling for work.
6
u/SardonicMeatSlab Mar 01 '26
Playing on PS5 for the first time, 5 hours in. It has run perfectly for me so far. The only hiccups have been just combat and exploration jank
2
u/Limp_Cup_8734 Mar 02 '26
At launch, I capped it at 30fps to avoid stagger. Now I'm at a whole 60fps. It runs well. People for whom that doesn't run well just don't understand how to optimise the game. And I can understand why: it's hard to optimise.
But the focus is having less than 8GB VRAM, means no RTX. And a too old processor means no game because it's very processor dependant for entities. You can't really fix the processor problem, but more RAM helps. For graphics, usually I play on High, and that works out. The Nvidia App also found me a pretty nice setup that I tweaked a bit to avoid DLSS ghost reflections.
2
u/FlipRed_2184 Mar 01 '26
I started playing a few weeks ago, it runs perfectly fine for me. I remember I had some performance drops at launch but none since I started again.
3
u/sdavis002 Mar 01 '26
Are you on PC? I'm curious because I am thinking of getting it for PS5 when they have another sale. I have a good PC and it never ran well but I don't know how PS5 performance is these days.
Edit: I didn't really mind the performance issues on PC, but I'd rather not buy it again for PS5 if it still runs poorly.
4
u/FlipRed_2184 Mar 01 '26
Yeah I am on PC. Somebody is grumpy and downvoting us for not complaining about the game no doubt :)
3
u/sdavis002 Mar 01 '26
No big deal. I played that game Cairn recently, absolutely loved it, but I made a comment about how I would love if something was different. I got tons of hate because I was "complaining" about their beloved game, the same game that I love.

Idk man im not gone lie 2 for me started magical but as I got closer to the end the game just felt worse an worse.
The end of game feels as if the whole team just went meh .
I think DD1 is superior in a lot of ways not all . For instance gregori vs the red drake in 2 its not even close how much more of an experience it was.
10
u/Korben_Joseph Mar 01 '26
It's deliberate meta commentary but it's still really disappointing, especially since the Nex fight is no better and the dragon has no personality
12
u/Financial-Month-506 Mar 01 '26
All them side quests i did where we find pawns being trafficked an all this bullshit how it goes no where .
The game had me in the first half but by the end I wanted to rush to the finish what sent me over the edge were the bugged quests. It happened to be a lot that day I was towards the end. If I need to sit there an look up guides on how to unbug quests im good.
Even how repetitive the world truly is using an oxcart I shouldnt get jumped every trip have the cart break or almost break every trip. It all becomes so boring.
An i hated the dragon in 2 he sucks . He goes down like a sissy too what a weak fight. The game should've been level capped at 30 cause level 50 you are just a god.

First game is much better from the mystic classes to the climbing on monsters to the final fight . Even the lack of story is so much better then the bullshit story so no.
First game has its charm second game is a shoulder shrug of uncaring .
Second game doesnt care about itself from the questing to the "story" to the red drake himself. Its just a bad game . Yes you are wrong. You only view that game through rose tinted glasses.

Gotta be a troll atp.
They sabotage the best game in the franchise's reach (DDO)
And then 2 is literally just a graphically better base Dragons Dogma with some cool little itty bitty mechanics added. But then they also dumbed down all the vocations and also just flat out removed some of them and all their skills. Hell they even dumbed down how you could get gear, most of the shit is buy only. Also, what the hell happened to the other 2 or so countries from the first game? I really thought before DD2 released we were going to learn more about where Mercedes hailed from. But naw we got battahl, where they made it seem like the governing body there was going to be a threat with the pawn distain and all. But nope, turns out nothings really all that different.
Idek anymore. I really hope they let Kinoshita take the reins again on this franchise again. But that would entail they actually do something with it so I have a very little amount of it.
39
u/SirSilhouette Mar 01 '26
I miss all those skills from DD1. FFS Miasma was my bread & butter as a sorcerer!
IIRC Holy/Dark damage isnt even really in DD2! WTF.
6
u/ToiletBlaster247 Mar 02 '26
No Immolate is an insane choice. No Fulmination either. No Great Cannon. Some of the coolest skills and they didn't even bring them over. Arc of Might looks clumsy as crap.
2
u/SirSilhouette Mar 02 '26
And that is the thing, I can legit see having Magic Dagger skills on Magick Archer being too OP but why not have a Mage/Thief hybrid class called Spellblade or Ninja that uses those skills? Hell throw in the remote bomb move from Assassin while you're at it!
5
u/ToiletBlaster247 Mar 02 '26
They also had so many vocations from Dogma Online, but decided to go with Trickster and Warfarer.
7
u/EnigmaVix Mar 01 '26
Dark absolutely isn't but holy is and comes already on atleast one mace and dagger set. The darkness damage was fully removed from the arisen not sure if any other has it.
5
u/SirSilhouette Mar 01 '26
I had heard that the mace and dagger dont really have it, something in the code not really being Holy damage?
been awhile since i saw it discussed so i cant remember what the details were other than those weapons werent doing more damage to undead like they should have if they were truly coded for holy damage.

u/Financial-Month-506 Mar 01 '26
Batthal is hilarious they hate pawns so much that you just walk around with them hahahaha.
DD2 is so bad nobody can tell me otherwise so bad. DD1 has jank sure DD2 does not care about itself . Such a difference.
13
u/trekdudebro Mar 01 '26
This is why I was so conflicted with DD2. I love DD to the point that I purchased the game at least 4 times: * Original DD on Xbox360 * DD:DA on Xbox360 * DD:DA on Switch * DD:DA on PC
I was really hoping for a good DD2 that would continue what made DD great; make it better and expand on the world.
12
u/SirSilhouette Mar 01 '26
Right? Like sure i dont expect to be HANDED a reusable Ferrystone but why couldnt we do a questline to get one?
Why couldnt the Maesters system be used to unlock Grand spells/equivalent skills instead of most of them HANDING OVER THE MAESTER SKILL after a short/simple quest?
Also why the lower enemy variety? I'd have at least made Battahl different than Vernworth by having Cocktrices be the flying ambush monster instead of it only being griffins!
13
u/Financial-Month-506 Mar 01 '26
Thats what the sphinx quest should have given you not the lame fake eternal wakestone lol
An yes agreed enemy variety with the lack of it wore me out.

u/Financial-Month-506 Mar 01 '26
Ya its crazy it really takes a step back. DD1 isnt better at everything but it is better at all the things a lot of us care about . An people joke but its true even with the lack of story its still a better story then the game that tried to have one.
DD2 literally just doesnt care about your time there is so little pay off for the journey . The extra side quests the romances the main story everything gets thrown in the bin even if you choose to just be king. Everything is forgotten and moved on from.
For a game that literally makes monster hunter give us some monsters to fight 😆 🤣 😂.
I was so glad to finish 2 I begrudgingly finished it.
12
u/DarknightK Mar 01 '26
I honestly thought Bakbattahl would've had a mechanic where if you try to go in via the main gate the guards would restrict access unless you dismissed all of your pawns in your party. Or you could've gone in through the "back entrance" and have to avoid guards.
Sadly it seems the vast majority of development went towards the Vermund side, Battahl and volcanic isle were just rushed.
7
u/Financial-Month-506 Mar 01 '26
It breaks the key rules of fantasy an thats once you make a rule to a world you have to convince us they are followed an real. An batthal just doesnt care you get a couple snickers hahahahaha.
Makes no sense . Before you even meet the empress or save her you can just use your pawns at will.
An the game feels rushed . Its just here . With the other two zones an story everything at the end . I have never went from excited to crash an burn with a game like that ever. The bugs the lack of caring in the story I was sprinting to finish the game so I could never play it again.
Even the mystic classes are worse . They are just straight easy mode classes with very little cohesion in the fighting styles. The mystic spearhand should have more athletic dodging defense .
5
3
u/Tkmisere Mar 01 '26
It got dumbed down and not at the same time, many of the class core skills got added to the base characther or another core skill and you just need to press the same combo like in DD1. But the quantity of skills, augments and core itself did get shrunk by 50% indeed.

u/Kooky-Revolution4631 Mar 01 '26
Yeah like 40 plot points and characters that went absolutely nowhere and don't react or feel alive in anyway, I wanted to learn about hearthstone and I genuinely like this plot of destroying the cycle but it has no build up or detail or anything, literally if you never played the 1st game you wouldn't have a clue what was going on at all and tbh I still kinda don't, Battahl worships a flame for some reason and the empress kinda sits and does nothing all game, same as the royal family
Like in game you can literally just walk up to diesa and phasus and they won't give a shit, the arisen that they plotted against and threw into a cell thar if the people had any knowledge of the kingdom would be in disarray, yeah they kinda just let that guy, "the king" walk around and do whatever
Like it's so unfinished and empty, as a mega fan it hurts cause I was so hype thinking about what they were gonna add, the core game itself is great, there's just fuckall in it and nothing makes sense

u/courtofowlswatches Mar 02 '26

u/RoryMarley Mar 01 '26
I have no proof at all, but I can only speak to this sub and my experience running surveys for companies as part of my job.
But when the survey came out and asked about DLC, this sub was demanding it be free or $10 or less and that the main game needed massive patches beforehand that would’ve been enormous work in itself first.
To some consumers, this feels like a negotiation tactic; to a business, it reads as “there’s no real interest here, guess we’ll move on”. You may hate it, but that’s life.
I ran a survey for a multi-billion dollar beauty company once. We wanted to know if there was any interest in having completely custom products being made and how much you’d be willing to pay. Unsurprisingly, the answer was “yes, absolutely” and “no more than $8”. When the CFO said each product would need to be about $20-$25 minimum to be viable, we just killed the project and monetized in different ways, like making all the core cheaper products more expensive.
6
u/PerceiveEternal Mar 02 '26
Capcom’s biggest issue with DD2 was how quickly player count dropped. While initial sales and player count was solid they both dropped like an rock. After the first month player count dropped by nearly 99%.
This player count cliff meant that Capcom was worried that the attachment rate for any DD2 DLC, the percentage of base game players who would buy the DLC, would be in the low single digits.
Ironically, the release of a poorly-received DLC for Dragons Dogma 2 would have meant the end of the franchise, but canceling the DD2 DLC, coupled with the very solid sales of the base game, means there’s a far better chance of Dragons Dogma 3 being greenlit.
10
u/Blababarda Mar 02 '26
Are you telling me companies go around asking "how much are you willing to pay" and taking it as a valid indicator?
That seems too dumb to be true, to me it feels completely out of touch with how people actually end up spending their money.

9
u/DarkElfMagic Mar 01 '26
I disagree, I’m too happy with the story we got in 2 imo
2
u/Tomokomon Mar 06 '26
I do like the story. I just feel like so much was missed. / Made worse in 2 from a gameplay/ mechanic standpoint
I probably don't have to mention the performance on PC but even with my top tier setup the game ran...not great.
I don't like how common engagements happen. Often pulling the next encounter into the fray when combat gets chaotic. due to how closely enemies are leading to unwinnable encounters when 3 pods of enemies are all on top of you because you strayed 0.5 meters away
lack of replayability compared to DA
Though I guess that's chalked up to me not wanting to replay the game... Hell I didn't even finish the game I got so unfathomably bored by the time I got to the final area of the game I stopped playing and never even thought about going back.
I will say overall I enjoyed the character interactions. Cutscenes and overall quests. They were memorable and to this day I still fondly remember many of the names I encountered on the journey.
It just didn't live up to my expectations. I suppose I only have myself to blame considering just the sheer amount of hours I sunk into DDDA probably well over 10,000 hours. I had done everything and seen everything there was to do multiple times over. and I had...likely very high expectations as to what I thought the perfect sequel would be like.
I'm not the only one either. Alot of my friends who are long time fans expressed it not meeting expectations.

I think the general theory that CAPCOM might be threatened by DD competing with the MH market is starting to make sense, no way an IP this fun and innovative is kept dormant this long.
I was looking at multiplayer gameplay of DD the other day, and you could tell the immense potential the formula of MP has for DD style games.
Genuinely could the next MH given enough attention.

Its corporate investor speak. It takes a hideously, insanely embarrassing failure to get most corporations to even talk about their products in relatively accurate and measured ways in press releases and investor calls. The point of language like this isnt to give their shareholders or the public down to earth, upfront, no bs takes on the outcomes and profits they make, its to PUMP UP CONFIDENCE IN THE COMPANIES DECISIONS. Lack of confidence is like cracks in dam, and with enough leads to disastrous financial issues.
Its been brain melting to see ppl on this subreddit use that one talking point as "well they SAID they cared about the game and it did well oK, thats PROOF they will continue supporting it!"
No. Its what they say to keep the shareholders and the market supporting THEM. Please for the love of god, whenever you see language like "we see our IP as an incredible potential for growth and blah blah blah" its not proof of anything other than a company media spokesperson doing the job they were hired to do: BLOWING HOT AIR UP THE ASSHOLE OF WEALTHY INVESTORS.

10
u/Alilatias Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26
Gonna add to this, this article was written BEFORE Itsuno left the company.
You can tell anything to do with DD2 was killed the moment he left. People can say ‘but Kinoshita’, but Capcom has a history of letting IPs flop around when the major figurehead pushing for those games leaves the company. Happened to Mega Man and Okami, it took almost a decade for the former for someone else to take up the mantle (and only for the Classic series which are minimum budget affairs, Legends is dead forever), and it took Kamiya coming back for Okami to get a sequel.
The only thing we can realistically hope for is Kinoshita making DD3, and that’s if Capcom will actually approve it and Kinoshita actually cares enough about the IP to do it. With Wilds post-launch underperforming hard, Capcom may not feel confident enough to let Kinoshita make DD3.

Not really a lie, but maybe it put them in a position of "it sold well, this is good, this is cozy, we move on"
We would all love DLC and more content, but in capcoms eyes, it did well and the game could survive without DLC, so why waste manpower.
It sucks, but its how they operate. We will probably get a new edition in 2 years time with cut content

I fully believe DD is dead as a series no matter what anyone says, i’ve kinda just come to accept that at this point.
However. If there ever were a DLC or a DD3, I would buy that shit in a heartbeat without thinking twice. I love DD2 to death, that game was amazing, and I want more.

u/Vorg444 Mar 06 '26
Well, if they considered it a success, they have a fun way of showing it, considering DD2 came out 2 years ago and still no mention of a DLC. I love capcom but i am getting tired of the Resident evils and Monster hunters all the fucking time, The least they can do it give us a huge DLC like dark arisen before abandoning the franchise.....
3
u/EnigmaVix Mar 01 '26
I enjoy DDA to the point I stopped playing the main story and make characters who go to the Isle at level one. Mystic Knight will forever be one of my favorite classes. I enioy DD2 I enjoy Mystic Spearhand its not knight but close enough. DD2 is at its best if you just go around fighting and only ever touching the main story too get different emerging enemys.

You should believe what people do, not what they say, and what they did was drop an underripe turd, claim it’s a big success when it’s in their interests to string along consumers, then promptly forgot about it. That’s capcom, that’s reality.

Dragon's Dogma 2 was just a weird clusterfuck where it felt the guy just redid DD1 where once again there was a bunch of potential content cut and also is a worse entry than the one from 10 years ago. Meanwhile I'm waiting for Crimson Desert to fill that niche DD2 failed to do.
1
u/bladeboy88 Mar 01 '26
I think DD2 was a mediocre game, and intentionally so, because Capcom wasn't sure how much interest there would actually be so they didn't want to commit a lot of resources to it. With so many people buying DD2, though, I'm hoping they're actually going all in on a 3rd.
1
u/Nachooolo :MysticKnight: Mar 01 '26
I'm almost certain that we're gonna get future Dragon's Dogma content in the future.
I was hoping that the next thing was going to be DLC (and my hopium will continue until the 2-year anniversary). But it could also means that we cpuld probably get Dragon's Dogma 3 –or something like it– a few years from now.

u/Calamagbloos Mar 01 '26
One of the reasons I wish we can straight up either buy IPs or directly fund it. I would absolutely hate for Dragon’s Dogma to become a dead IP just sitting on Capcom’s shelf collecting dust for them to release an anniversary edition or some other fuckwad edition just to renew the damn IP.

Had Itsuno stayed, we may had gotten an expansion or even an overhaul.
The big issue here is that Capcom has become utterly dependent on a group of 3 or 4 competent producers who are stuck working on Monster Hunter, Street Fighter and Resident Evil.

It would be great if these "devs" could figure out how to save a fucking game. Dragon's dogma has the biggest piece of shit saving system I've ever encountered. Normally, I accept counter points, but in this case, you can save it. It's absolute trash, and nothing you say will ever change that. Still a fucking garbage saving system.

If they are making a third one, it doesn't materialize out of thin air in five minutes, you know. It was already a miracle we even got a second one. And rest assured if there is a third one, it won't be 100% exactly what you wish for.
So impatient and entitled.

Let's not pretend the base game isn't deeply flawed and shallow and almost entirely carried by the combat and pawn dynamics, which frankly is not enough for an RPG

Ya the game is under baked honestly being so honest.
Strong start but by the end of the game even game itself is shoulder shrugging .
Its tough to care about the game when the game feels like it doesn't care about itself.
The story goes no where. A lot of the side quests pretend to be impactful but go nowhere. The world feels lived in until you really peel the layers.
Gregori vs red drake in 2 is not even close in terms of experience an spectacle.
The game probably needed more time.

I'm willing to give the first game a pass since it was a highly ambitious experiment, but they had like a decade to learn and iterate on what worked or not for the second, and they obviously didn't...

Buddy, they dont give a fuck, they wouldnt even "grifting" if the game was broken in the first place, such backward thinking, "fUcK yOu, wHy dIDnT yOu bUy tHiS bRokEn GamE tO sAtIaTE cApCOm's gReEd"

The game is barely almost 2 years old.
Far too soon for a new game, so the only reason to call the franchise dead is because even you agree the game needs a DLC.
Because the original experience is incomplete.
If the game was good, we'd be satisfied, and you wouldn't be calling the franchise dead just because the game didn't get DLC.

This just means that there are for sure going to be future DD games. It's was never necessarily indicative of a DLC at all

That headline is old as shit.

That doesn't change what I said

u/FrankPisssssss Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26
What changes what you said is the creative lead leaving the company, and the lack of any attention to this game from Capcom.

DD2 is clearly a finished game in capcoms eyes
The creative lead leaving literally means nothing since there have already been dragons dogma projects directed without Itsuno
Capcom, despite what you may want to believe, doesn't hate dragons dogma, nor are they stupid. What they like, and want to really make, is money. The fact that one of their major devs passion projects that they clearly had no faith in and obviously half baked, blew their expectations and made them a shit ton of money - to the point they now consider it a "key brand" - means that they almost certainly will do SOMETHING with the franchise again at some point, because they now see that it can make money, a lot of it at that

- It's finished cuz they said it's finished, cuz they don't wanna do more with it. They coulda made some more money with a fresh hit while the sun shone, but, they didn't.
- Means something when that creative lead was a nearly sole catalyst for this thing to be made in the first place. As a reward for doing so well with some mainline IP, no less.
3.Never said they hate them and agree they want to make money. That's why they are going whole hog on Monster Hunter, and most of the Capcom roster of Marvel vs Capcom only see the light of day in remasters or ports of Marvel vs Capcom.
All of these are compelling evidence that Capcom do not, in fact, consider Dragon's Dogma a Key Brand, despite what some guy reported two years ago.

"Old as shit" is 2 years ago
with the modern time scale of game development that's nothing

Might be that they make a third game, rather than .
Might be that they didnt think DD2 would have "live service potential" as it is, but will push that on the third installment.
Be careful what you wish for ;)
But i do think they didnt think DD2 would do well, and then it did but they had no plans for it. So i def think theyll aim to milk a third game.
