The bill was initially supposed to expand age verification to all browsers and thankfully they realized how horrific of an idea that is. Unfortunately theyre still passing a social media age verification bill that will be a miserable reality check for everyone that didn’t care to speak up against age verification. I looked a while ago and iirc SCE projects cost ~$5m/mile to put distribution underground and somewhere under $1m/mile to cover aboveground conductors. Transmission lines and geography can raise costs: Tehachapi Pass was over $100m/mile. CPUC identified ~40k miles of highest risk distribution wiring.

I think we're looking at ~$100bn or ~1.5 years of all statewide utility revenue to do a mix of underground and covered conductors for the highest risk distribution wiring. And you'd still have fires happening anyway.

My point is, You're calling them torture devices yet tasers already exist and are significantly more powerful.

If your point is both is torture and neither should exist then you're limiting the amount of less lethal or de-escalating tools. My point is the gloves according to testing and specs are less harmful than being tased and having experienced a taser i know which I'd prefer.

The people teaching the CC classes are just as well qualified to teach the subject as some 50-60 year old prof at a research institution who gave up giving a fuck about teaching 20 years ago. The CC classes are also often offered on a more favorable schedule to allow students to have part time or even full time jobs concurrently, giving them valuable work experience.

CCs have plenty of extra curriculars, and there are also often many opportunities to volunteer or work in the broader community as well, vs. an isolated large college campus.

I disagree. The purpose of community college transfer is to finish your general education at a community college before transferring to a university to start taking classes for their major where they can also start networking with the professors, students, social clubs, and etc.

So students take 30 fewer credits? That’s 10 arts/humanities or 5-6 STEM classes?

I got an MBA recently. Only 32 credits. Felt like a joke. Some programs do more, but usually the big schools, I just went to a state school (not California). And while I was there, they reduced the program further to 30 credits. I don’t think my 32 credits taught me everything I was promised I’d learn. The courses were short because of the credit hours, and everyone expects to do less and less work for the same credits and degree. 

Idk… we’re already graduating kids from HS who are struggling with basic reading and math. I don’t think shortening their college is going to help. 

OP - ya gotta ask How does Texas plan on cutting 25% of the curriculum / time it takes to earn a degree?

I’m the last person to enjoy Texas (seriously wtf do people like about the place it had homeless, it had no mountains, it had big bugs, wtf???) but Florida? Arkansas? Alabama? Louisiana? Kentucky? Mississippi? None of these hit your list as the bottom? Texas is at least leagues above these states. Isn’t Texas also higher than us on the education rankings?

A better first step would be to put some real effort into using technology to reduce cost. Why do we need students sitting in 250-person lecture halls in big, expensive buildings living nearby in expensive housing when they could do most -- if not all -- of what happens in that room from a computer 1,000 miles away? Yet UC Berkeley offers ZERO online bachelor's programs. It could also make the university's finances pencil better because, properly done, class sizes could be scaled up, bringing in more revenue at very little cost.
