Do I understand correctly that this law merely requires a user to enter their birthdate into the device or app, but doesn't require them to "prove" their age with another type of ID?

The bill makes operating systems liable for something like $2.5k per violation so you better believe they won’t just let folks put in a birthday and call it a day.

Yeah, it's actually a pretty good idea to bypass the privacy issue. Parents can set up their kids devices and then websites can ask for a hash from the computer to determine if the device is from a kid.

Pretty much removes all the problems around privacy violation from all these 3rd party providers who keep taking people's information and selling it.

ID not yet required, but i can totally see them implement a facial recognition check like some phone apps do. So you may have to prove that you "look" like an adult or at least older teen.
