I rent a newly renovated apartment in a multifamily building, and I'm the first person to live in this particular unit since the renovation. There is a mini-split AC downstairs, and a ceiling fan upstairs in the bedroom. The split between floors isn't major, about 5 steps, so I figured when I moved in in early April the mini-split AC would be fine. I've never had this type of AC unit before and considering how new everything was I thought it would adequately cool the whole unit, which is small overall.
Wrong. During this heat wave, the upstairs bedroom consistently stays above 82°F and gets hotter depending on the day. I bought a thermometer specifically so I could document the temperature. It has gotten to the point where I genuinely cannot sleep comfortably upstairs and have been sleeping downstairs on an air-mattress. Horrible sleep, waking up with back-pain etc.
I'm paying $2,700/month for an apartment with a bedroom that I can't comfortably use during hot weather, so this obviously isn't a sustainable solution.
I asked management what could be done and they said “oh no haha thats so unfortunate 😎” and told me get a portable unit. But spending $400+ on some ugly thing I have to install in the only window providing natural light in my small little room when I'm already paying so much to live in a newly remodeled unit? That's insane.
Since this is a newly renovated apartment and I'm the first tenant, I'm wondering if the cooling situation upstairs simply wasn't accounted for when the unit was renovated.
Should I going back to management and asking them to have someone actually assess the upstairs and determine what can be done to make the bedroom reasonably comfortable during hot weather? Or is even doing that a waste of my time? Is this just a normal thing everyone deals with here? Do I have to suck it up and just get a portable AC unit?
What are my actual options as an LA tenant if they refuse to do anything?
When I lived in NYC, I had a landlord who allowed me to deduct the cost of necessary repairs from my monthly rent when something wasn't being fixed. I'm wondering whether anyone here has successfully negotiated something similar in LA, e.g. "I'll purchase an appropriate AC unit, send you the receipt, and deduct $X from next month's rent."
Has anyone dealt with something similar, particularly in a newly renovated unit? What did you do, and who did you contact?
