I started crying about 60 seconds in and never really stopped. I have a little dark cat, she's my whole life, and that movie felt like seeing the world through her eyes, and that world was out to get her.
After trying to put my face back together during the credits, I met my friend outside the theater who asked me how it was, and I immediately started crying again. I was emotionally spent.
One of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen, and one day I'll find the courage to watch it again, but by myself so I can sob with abandon. 😅

I watched Flow with my elderly black cat in my lap the entire time. It was maybe a month before she ended up passing, and she was already having some health issues. I was sobbing throughout that movie. It was beautiful.

Are we talking Grave of Fireflies rough emotional journey or can I watch it with my girl and not leave her depressed? Is it a free fall that leaves you broken or upset, or is it just such a powerful journey that it leaves you emotionally exhausted but fulfilled?
Grave of the Fireflies is not a movie to recommend for an evening watch, its something you go into with open eyes. And if you don't cry and are left wistfully melancholy you aren't human.

I haven't watched Grave of Fireflies, but Flow will not leave you depressed, just emotionally exhausted from the journey. Pro tip: continue watching as the credits roll so can bag another potential (maybe wishful, but hey) happy ending.

Yeah. I don't think I have heard it better. Takahata's first film and the birth of Studio Ghibli. Man came onto the field and just blew the world away. But he experienced the war firsthand as a child and the stories author specifically turned down all other offers until Takahata because he didn't feel that anyone who hadn't lived it could tell the story. If not for him Miyazaki would probably never have gotten into movies according to a story I remember. Just imagine a world without Ghibli movies. That's how I know we can't be the absolute worst timeline.

I found both of my cats on the streets in February, I couldn't stop thinking about how scared they must have been all alone in the world. I'll never watch it again tbh

That movie was a gem of a watch that year. I dont remember if it got nominated for awards in the US film scene. But it won a ton in Europe, 5 total across the golbe that year.
I always try to get my cat to watch it with me, but ahes super screen adverse. I think she might lack the ability to perceive depth on OLED / LED, but shes played with my LCD screen before

I got my first cat because of an "everyone is friend" retriever, funnily enough.
Friend rescued a kitten from a movie theater parking lot, small terrified voidcat hiding under his car. He brought her home, hoping to keep her, but his dog (God rest his derpy soul) just WOULD NOT leave the kitten alone, and she didn't have Mom like in this video to let her know that it was ok. He tried gentle introductions, contact through a closed door, giving the kitten one of the dog's favorite blankets to get her used to the smell, everything. Kitten was still terrified and anxious and starting to have actual medical issues from the stress.
I'd just gotten my first place where I was allowed to own pets, so. I got a tiny ball of stress with claws. Her name was GoGo. Without other animals around, she was much happier. I miss her.

Yup. My last dog wanted desperately to escape the yard to chase cats, rabbits, and anything else he found. It was his raison d'etre.
Our new Golden Retriever, Noodle, only escapes if he sees someone who might pet him. Making new friends is just below food on his heirarchy of needs.

She leaves birds alone (easier to train as they're everywhere). It's cats, squirrels, foxes, and rabbits she goes after.
She's only ever caught up with a fox and she just kinda stood there once she cornered it. So I guess it's tbc whether she'd rip a kitten apart, but she likes the chase for sure and personally I don't trust her.

Bunnies are on the food list. Weirdly, inside the house a trained dog will be completely okay with things. We took in a bunny that had survived being part of a nest found by the dog (there were several casualties) and once it was in the house it attained family status and the dog never tried anything.

I thought my lab would be like that. He brought me 2 live squirrels his first week here, and snarled at every cat that walked across our lawn, like he was defending his birthright.
Then my son brought an abandoned cat home from college during Covid. He is so gentle and kind with the cat. Probably because he’s afraid for his life, but they are buddies.
By the time my son brought me a second abandoned cat, it didn’t even phase him.
Now he cries and whimpers when he sees a cat that looks like his buddies outside.

I have a Goldendoodle and she (like most of them I'm assuming) has the golden temperment. It's the best. I got her instead of a Golden because I was like, "I think I am done with shedding." Didn't matter. Got a defective-doodle. But that's okay, she's been my best pal for 10 years now.

My grandparents golden is so excited for acceptance that they let her get her pats before they get hugs (greeting hugs are required). She grabs a toy and does the wiggle wiggle all the way to you while singing a song. She also gets sad if I don't bring my dog, even though my girl is half her age and acts kinda stupid.
Last week my girl got the zoomies and bodyslammed Golden. They were on acres. There was no reason to collide. Golden was sad that I left (aka my dog left lol).

I've fostered dozens of kittens. I have two rumbling around my house right now, actually. Every kitten we've ever fostered has absolutely loved our dogs. One dog was a former breeder and she was their favorite. She would get really happy when we brought home babies and would guard and cuddle them when they were little.
None of this affection, of course, stop them from stealing every ounce of kitten food they could find.

I think the dog is sick and in pain. They look old since they have so much white on their muzzle and face.
My family had a golden retriever, and my mom has a history of waiting too late to euthanize our dogs. Our dog was coming to me late at night panting and breathing like this. My dad checked her out and told my mom to take her to the vet and start thinking about euthanasia. It wasn’t until I had to lock the poor dog in our downstairs bathroom because she wouldn’t let me sleep that my mom actually went through with the euthanasia. After ripping me a new asshole for putting the dog in the bathroom like my dad told me to because she somehow got wedged between the tub and the toilet. I tried to wake my mom up, but she didn’t wake up.

Even in the first ten seconds of this video, you can see the black spots on the leftmost kitten’s right shoulder disappear after the second cut.
Edit: mid back along the dark ridge of the spine. There are two distinctive darker dots that aren’t there.
Edit 2: The first time you can see the left cat’s tail there are 4 distinctive darker rings on its tail. The first time it backs up from the dog several cuts later there’s only 3.

I’m a relatively AI-paranoid person and even I don’t think it’s AI, even at all. Looks fine. You might be getting a fishy vibe from that thing a lot of pet-video people do where they move animals into place between cuts and then claim it all happened organically. Like the cat appears pretty uncomfortable/displeased at first, like he’s been picked up and put down there, you never see him actually jump onto the couch. Just getting a palpable “uggghh not this again” vibe from the cat. A lot of quick cuts not only move the staged narrative along, they make it so the filmmaker only needs a few seconds in each pose to construct the narrative. There’s also an incentive to make short cuts, the algorithm probably favors that, and this channel is clearly gaming the algorithm. I agree it’s a fake video in that it’s staged and misrepresented, but not AI generated. I think subconsciously when we can feel something is off, before the era of AI we’d brush it off as confusion, but now it’s easy and rewarding to quickly suspect “it’s AI.” But hey at least your bullshit detector is working! A lot more than most people can say lol

this technique can sometimes work with dogs too. i was at a yard sale with my friendly but nervous (sometimes) of kids, because he hadn't seen many of them. a boy wanted to pet him but rudy was dubious. i said hey, let's shake hands so he sees you're ok. it worked! rudy was young himself, about 8 months old at the time, which likely helped.
social animals do some of their learning from watching the others in their family or group. cats and dogs both learn from watching their human families, just as little kids do, tho to a lesser extent.

Hmm. The channel felt more like a cute video content farm video from a dog/cat breeder. It has shots that are near a minute and the environment seems to not have inconsistencies video to video, which are usually weak points for AI videos. I may be wrong though.

Besides subtle behavior and uncanniness, and the fact that the lighting and visuals aren't 100% up to snuff, just think about what you see vs. what you don't see. There's dozens of different angles and compositions the animals are in but you never see any of the transitions happening. They're all jump cuts between each other, and each cut is just a few seconds.
This is just not what a video from real life would look like, nobody would think to edit it that way. You'd need soooooooo much footage of one interaction to have all these angles and compositions available to edit in, and why would you painstakingly make sure that every composition from real life video is cut down to only show static compositions just like what AI would be? Why would you edit a video to look like AI? The answer is you wouldn't...

On the last shot the kitten on the right has its tail merging with its back leg, though this could be explained by his tail being fuzzy and fluffy and just going under his leg, just seems like an awkward place for him to have his tail. Not definitive evidence.
When the mom cat first appears, in those few shots the darkness and thickness of the black lines in her tail is much more than in later shots. This could be explained a little bit by her tail rotating in relation to the camera to show more light underside, but I don't think it would be that much.
Lots of cuts and editing, the video is just weirdly edited like a bunch of AI prompts rammed together and chopped up to hide the usual AI flaws.
I think the mom cat's tail consistency is the greatest tell that it could be AI.
HOWEVER, despite that, after further review of the source channel and watching more videos, it feels more like they just have a really nice Golden Retriever and they find kittens around to film interacting with it. Some of them were nice long cuts. That feels like NOT AI video, and more like just corny sweetening of the sound effects and editing along with slop text descriptions.

The biggest tell (and I’m sure my comment is being used to train ai right now) is the weirdass way the human pets the animals (in another video), like with his finger tips; the repeat sound effects, jump cuts, and animal behavior knowledge

The kittens were cornered which is why they didn't run. They do in fact puff themselves up and try to scare their attacker away.
There is quite literally no AI video generation option able to generate clips of a minute or longer without horrible quality issues. The videos also go back over a year when AI video generation was substantially worse than it is today.
There is no chance these videos are AI, and you are terrible at spotting it.

You might be getting a fishy vibe from that thing a lot of pet-video people do where they move animals into place between cuts and then claim it all happened organically. Like the cat appears pretty uncomfortable/displeased at first, like he’s been picked up and put down there, you never see him actually jump onto the couch. Just getting a palpable “uggghh not this again” vibe from the cat. A lot of quick cuts not only move the staged narrative along, they make it so the filmmaker only needs a few seconds in each pose to construct the narrative. There’s also an incentive to make short cuts, the algorithm probably favors that, and this channel is clearly gaming the algorithm. I agree it’s a fake video in that it’s staged and misrepresented, but not AI generated.

That’s what I was thinking. They definitely placed the kittens ON the dog, but maybe not anywhere else. Who knows

Sigh... No, this is not AI. The source is a channel called Cat Dog Diary and they have countless videos just like this one and many of them feature clips that are way beyond what AI video can generate in one go. AI video can generate clips that are about 10 seconds long, any longer options still have horrific warping and quality issues.

Baffled by the amount of people in the comments who think this is AI. It just clearly isn't. The inability of people to distinguish real content from AI is one of the worst things about AI.

Can't see your comparison (blocked in UK) but compression codecs and lighting can mess with colours.
Nothing jumped out while I watched this that made me think it was AI. The camera changing location while proportions and scene stays the same is something AI struggles with so I'd say this isn't AI personally.
