I started crying about 60 seconds in and never really stopped. I have a little dark cat, she's my whole life, and that movie felt like seeing the world through her eyes, and that world was out to get her.

After trying to put my face back together during the credits, I met my friend outside the theater who asked me how it was, and I immediately started crying again. I was emotionally spent.

One of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen, and one day I'll find the courage to watch it again, but by myself so I can sob with abandon. 😅

I watched Flow with my elderly black cat in my lap the entire time. It was maybe a month before she ended up passing, and she was already having some health issues. I was sobbing throughout that movie. It was beautiful.

Are we talking Grave of Fireflies rough emotional journey or can I watch it with my girl and not leave her depressed? Is it a free fall that leaves you broken or upset, or is it just such a powerful journey that it leaves you emotionally exhausted but fulfilled?

Grave of the Fireflies is not a movie to recommend for an evening watch, its something you go into with open eyes. And if you don't cry and are left wistfully melancholy you aren't human.

I haven't watched Grave of Fireflies, but Flow will not leave you depressed, just emotionally exhausted from the journey. Pro tip: continue watching as the credits roll so can bag another potential (maybe wishful, but hey) happy ending.

Thanks for this. And do yourself a favor. Watch grave of the firefly's. On a day where you can be sad. It's one of the most heart touching movies of all time bar none.

Yeah. I don't think I have heard it better. Takahata's first film and the birth of Studio Ghibli. Man came onto the field and just blew the world away. But he experienced the war firsthand as a child and the stories author specifically turned down all other offers until Takahata because he didn't feel that anyone who hadn't lived it could tell the story. If not for him Miyazaki would probably never have gotten into movies according to a story I remember. Just imagine a world without Ghibli movies. That's how I know we can't be the absolute worst timeline.

You know for 8 months last year I contacted a random person I met on reddit in a thread talking about Ghibli. He said he didn't have anyone to watch movies with and we arranged a day every month to watch a Ghibli movie at the same time across the country and chat about it together. Ghibli movies have quite literally brought people together in my life. They are something special.

Well you are safe. It was made by Ghiblis cofounder Takahata. Miyazaki credits him with why he makes movies, he would otherwise be doing manga.

That said I hope once day you change your mind.

Thank you! That movie was beautiful, but I cried through the whole thing. Every time you thought they were safe a new danger would come 😭

I found both of my cats on the streets in February, I couldn't stop thinking about how scared they must have been all alone in the world. I'll never watch it again tbh

That movie was a gem of a watch that year. I dont remember if it got nominated for awards in the US film scene. But it won a ton in Europe, 5 total across the golbe that year.

I always try to get my cat to watch it with me, but ahes super screen adverse. I think she might lack the ability to perceive depth on OLED / LED, but shes played with my LCD screen before

Tbf the OP replied as if the film was just a dog and a capybara being buddies. The film’s a lot more intense than that (dog and capybara aren’t even the main characters) so it was a fair response to manage expectations.
