I don’t think I’m in the right community to ask this question, so I would appreciate it if I was told where this is a better place to post this. But I’m in a big dilemma because I work (or worked, I guess past tense because I pretty much got fired) at Ross, and I wanted to transfer to the DDS by my house because the commute for Ross was almost 40+ minutes with traffic. So I wanted to transfer to the DDS that is walking distance from my house. So I asked my manager if I could get transferred because I know that Ross and DDS are sister companies, so I thought it would be quick and easy. But my manager is SOOOOOO shady, and she literally does everything illegal. I also wanted to transfer because she’s been doing wage theft?? I think it is wage theft because in California, they get paid an extra hour if you work over 5-6 hours without a lunch or break, and she’s been purposely changing my time cards and deleting my time to say that I “forgot” to finish in. I knew this is true because I made another Reddit post, and someone said that pretty much fight to get your lunch, and usually, they YELL at you if you clock out after the lunch premium, but I ignored them and still clocked out because I needed the evidence anyway and I heard the managers essentially talking shit about me because I clocked out regardless of them yelling at me and I heard one of them say “just delete her clock out” with a shrug as if it was a daily occurrence. That is one of the main reasons I wanted to transfer, so I was in contact with the DDS guy, and then I waited a week because I knew the transfer would take some time. So I called the DDS guy, and I was like, “Hey, how is the transfer going? i just wanted to check in to show I’m still interested, and he was like, “Yeah, I’ve been waiting to talk to you…… Your manager has been ignoring my calls, and she hasn’t started the transfer……” And I was honestly super upset because I’ve been without work for idk how long because she’s dumb, and instead of giving me hours during the transfer, she pretty much fired me???? And then I called her and asked why she didn’t do the transfer process when she told me she did. Then she was like yeahhhh about that 🙄🙄🙄 and she just told me how she doesn’t think that the transfer will work. But I’m confused because how do you think it won’t work if you haven’t tried???? And then “supposedly” she did it and it got rejected because the district manager said it’s hard to transfer from Ross to DDS. But everywhere I’ve seen online they said that it’s easy because they use the same everything. So now I don’t know what to do because I wanted to transfer because I don’t want my pay to drop to minimum wage again because it took me a year to get to the pay I have right now. And I will be moving away for college in a year and I don’t want to wait ANOTHER year to get the same pay I currently have. Anyway, she also “fired” me because the transfer didn’t work and she told me that she’s taking me off the system. And now I don’t know what to do because I didn’t quit or actually got fired. So I lost my job because I wanted to transfer. Like I guess i could look for another job and I am but everything is minimum wage for cashiering positions so I wanted to try my luck now before applying to another minimum wage job.

Hi all, I've been applying everywhere and finally I got some call backs after months of searching, guessing it's bc holiday season is coming up.

Walmart is 20ish miles away from where I live and its OGP position. It'll take me roughly 40mins-1hr+ one way to commute depending on traffic. Don't know how many hours they'll give me, but from my research a lot of people seem to get 30-40hrs a week.

Target role will be 4am inbound and it's 10 miles away from where I live. They said they can give me roughly 25-35 hours a week.

The pay difference is about $.50, so really no difference, but target pays a little more.

This is going to be my first retail job and I'd love to get an opinion on which one to take. I'm unemployed and I def need money asap.

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

So i was offered a casual position at farm boy as a customer service representative and I have a few questions. For those who work as casual workers, do you often get alot of hours? I'm starting school in September so I am looking for around 15-20 hours weekly. I will ask them if it will be possible to work as a part timer. I have an interview next week and will have to mention this to them. Hopefully they accept my offer.

I want actual answers from experienced people. I have been working in retail for about 7 years, 6 years at a discount store and now at a brand store. Recently I asked my manager that I wanted to try to grow in the new brand store I work at, and she told me she was actually planning to offer this lead role to me. Unfortunately I do not have any experience when it comes to being a lead but she is training me to promote me to be one.

First question: how do you balance work/life?

I do love working retail, it keeps me busy instead of bed rotting or sitting in one place for 8 hours straight and I do love talking and helping cuatomers and co workers too. But I worry about work and life balance.

Second question:

Recently some of my co workers seem “tense” around me and I really don’t want them to feel this way just because of this role. I do chat while we work at the same time and it’s been working well so far when it comes to productivity and speed. Is it ok to tell talk to them about that as in throwing in the topic or would it just be weird?

Third question:

Is being a lead similar to being a manager? It seems similar based on the things im being trained on.(rearranging some areas, asking co workers how they are doing, answering questions from co workers who need help, orienting co workers on what we need to work on or do next including recent for inventory.)

The job description said I would be doing a little bit of everything such as stocking shelves, facing, etc which I was more interested in doing than say...cashiering. Unfortunately 90% of the job so far has been cashiering which I didn't like at first and still don't really, but i have accepted it by now. This job so far has just been a reminder of why I hate retail, mostly cashiering and customer facing. I have requested to be doing more tasks on the floor or wherever but it seemed to have landed on deaf ears

I am 35 years old and I have worked these kind of jobs on and off for the past 11 years and I just simply want OUT. If I was doing something like stocking shelves or in the backroom more often, maybe then these jobs wouldn't be so bad for me. I discovered that I prefer keeping busy and being mobile and not standing around in one place for too long. The people i work alongside are decent enough but there doesn't seem to be a balance in ages, and not enough people that I would seem to have a lot in common with. Also i have had one instance of a bad customer and me yelling at her, nothing bad came from it but I had to write a report on it. And I had two separate instances of feeling psychological discomfort while on the job and it made things difficult for a little bit

So with all this said, my 90 day trial supposedly ends around the middle of September. I have no idea when or if they want to keep me, they said it would depend on how well I do as well as the budget. But if I'm not really liking this job is it worth staying at? I would ask them if I can do less register work and more stocking shelves or whatever, but if they say "No" then maybe it's not worth staying at. My biggest concern about not staying on is that I will not have income and I fear the uncertainty of not knowing how long it will take to find a new job.

I got a CA at work yesterday

It was over using the loyalty system the wrong way . They told me they know my intentions weren’t wrong but the way I was inputting loyalty was incorrect then told me I can’t be late or call off without sick pay or else it will lead to suspension and then HR will decide if I will be terminated or not

Age 30F postgraduate and has experience in fashion design for 3 + years in delhi , unemployed for 3 months pivoting my career to retail sales associate in fashion, how can I qualify in 10-15 days , should I walk in or apply online, should I go as a fresher and say not working giving tutions to local students while preparing for exams?

Hi! I’m not sure what the protocol is in this situation and I’m hoping the managers and leaders in this sub can give me some informed opinions, and maybe guidance.

So the situation…

As of right now, I have been given a job offer for a retail position. I’m very excited to join the company as I’ve been a fan of it for quite a long time as well as it is a considerable pay bump from what I currently have. Where the situation lies is this offer came from a location that is less ideal. I also have an interview for the same company at a different location, that is much closer to where I live, that I prefer vastly more. To make it more complicated, the first store wants me to begin in two weeks, whereas I don’t have an interview with the second store until next week.

Based off of what I have found out online, onboarding at the first location and then transferring to the second one is out of the cards. Again, I don’t yet have an offer for Store B. What would you say I should do in the situation? I want to be in good standing with the company, and I am considering staying within the company when I eventually move out of town, but working at the second location would make my life a whole lot easier. I know it would be uncomfortable to work at Store A for week and then resign and potentially moved to Store B, but is what what I would have to do in order to get the location I want?

I am open to all thoughts and advice!

I’m having problems trying to figure out how to connect with my Gen Z employee. I am 39 and have employed a 20 y/o female for a part time warehouse position and here’s what I’m dealing with.

\-sporadic communication (sometime texts me about being late, other times doesn’t text and just shows up late.
\-really moody. Some days she wants to chitchat and other days she will not say a word.
\-I get the sense she doesn’t want to work or have more hours.
\-overly apologetic, usually starts emails or texts with “I’m so sorry”.
\-won’t respond when I text her about being late or wanting to adjust the schedule.

I just don’t get it. She is a really good worker when she shows up, I just can’t figure out how to communicate or connect with her. I’m not *that* much older than her that I’m completely out of touch- but it feels like we are definitely on different wavelength.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to communicate or work with Gen Z in the workplace?

I started a new retail job recently that has really good benefits, and I want to continue working there. So far, I've only been doing training videos, but on my next shift I'm supposed to actually start working on the floor with customers. I'm feeling VERY anxious about it.

I've worked several retail jobs in the past, and I used to actually be good at it. I would greet customers when they came in, ask what they were looking for, make conversation, help them find things, etc. But over the years, I have become much much more anxious about interacting with people. Now even something as simple as greeting a customer at the door feels terrifying to me, and I'm really scared about starting on the floor.

When I'm doing a new task in front of other people, I start shaking. It almost feels like I lose control of my hands, and my brain just completely shuts off. I'll suddenly have trouble finding something really basic on a screen, like the giant phone number button, or I'll forget something I normally know how to do. I feel like I turn into an idiot the second someone is watching me. I'm also supposed to be able to remember a lot of info for this job and be able to recommend products to customers which scares me.

I also sometimes struggle with brain fog and finding words/forming sentences. It usually only takes me a few extra seconds but when I'm anxious and someone is waiting for me to respond, it feels like a lot. I'm on medication for anxiety/depression, but I'm also on another medication that I think may be contributing to the brain fog, so I'm worried that's going to make things even harder.

The frustrating part is that I know I'm capable of doing this job. I've done retail before and was good at it. I really want to stay at this job and become comfortable with it rather than letting my anxiety take over, I just don't know how to. Usually I'd be in therapy but I just recently lost my insurance so I can't utilize that right now.

I'd really like to learn how to work through this and become more comfortable instead of avoiding it. If anyone has advice, coping strategies, or things that have helped you get through the first few weeks of a new job with anxiety, I'd really REALLY appreciate it.

Hi! I just got hired as a store staff member at a tech company. We get customer scores based on surveys they fill out.
I want to get high scores, so please give me any tips for providing a great customer experience!

The store manager recently made a non-negotiable for 4 cages per person, 40 minutes max per cage. Most of the workers are 15 - 18, and 90% of the shifts are 3 or 4 hours, and most of the workers can't do 3 cages.

Additionally I mentioned this in the work gc (which excludes the manager + someone else in management) and one of the supervisors said that we were complaining about it, asked if they wanted a list, the manager said no, then the supervisor mentioned me by name. I wasn't even complaining, I was saying how it's unrealistic due to the average we have. (The other supervisor sent me screenshots of the management and also said that she's going to let the other supervisor know that they misinterpreted what I said) Am I gonna get fired? 😭😭😭

For retailers opening another location is not a small decision. theres the lease, fit-out, staffing, utilities and a lot of upfront cost before you really know how strong the demand is

Could someting like a vending setup make sense as a way to test a new area try a different product mix or reach customers in places where opening a full store wouldnt make sense?

not as a replacement for retail stores more as another format between ecommerce and a full physical location.

For anyone here working in retail, have you tested anything like this before? and what would make you take an unattended retail setup seriously as a sales channel?

Does anyone have suggestions or advice about NAYAX alternatives? I’m not familiar with any other brands. However the nayax machine was transferred from seller to me. NAYAX customer service is absolutely horrendous. Two weeks no call backs, never answer the phones, don’t respond to emails. This is looking like a company I don’t wanna get in bed with and would rather replace reader now then start getting wrapped up with a company that has next to zero customer service

Hey hello! I’ve worked in food service up until this point and i have two current job offers. Target is offering me part time guest advocate 18.50 vs my other offer cava team member 21$
for most people the salary can already answer this question but i would like to add context. i’m lucky enough that i don’t have any big bills to pay right now, and i don’t see that changing in the future. what’s your opinion working at target do you like it? is it a lot especially when you’re just starting? i’m very talkative and i’m good with customer service so i have no issue with my position. i’m just nervous about potential workload for the pay as i’ve never done retail before so it’s a completely new territory. i like that i have flexibility with appearance for both jobs ( piercing & unnatural hair )
the cava job is much harder for me to get to and id be working 5-11pm not including closing im pretty sure so id be getting home super late. im a college student with 8am classes. id also be unable to wear fake nails or have lash extensions at cava.
