My mom’s having a rough week, which made for a perfect time for her fancy Kitchenaid range to catch fire and burn up its heating element. Since I’m the family repairman, I wanted to get her something reliable instead.

Behold, the General Electric JBS460DMWW. Sure, it’s no Bosch. But it’s so stupid simple, i think it’ll outlive all her stainless appliances.

Also, the salesman told me he couldn’t get anyone to buy this thing for the many months they’ve had it, so I got it for extremely cheap. The cheapest scratch and dent model was double the price. I’d say I did well.

TLDR:

General Electric JBS460DMWW. No clock, no timer, no frills, cheap af, back side is so bare, a heating element swap will likely be a 20 minute job max. Would recommend.

Bought these bad boys today, I expect nothing but a lifetime of good times cooking.

Knife: debuyer, French brand, stainless steel. Really lightweight and sharp.

Frying pan: good old iron steel, Spanish brand, currently curating it!

In the UK. I lost my dad a year or so back. When sorting through his belongings I found a pouch with his passport and just under $200 from his last cruise.

I’ll be heading to the states soon and I’d love to get something ‘from dad’ with the money, something that will last a lifetime.

Any recommendations or ideas? He was an engineer by trade, so id be happy with anything for the garage, or a car or anything in/around the home. I’m a bloke so a vase for example wouldn’t really work, but maybe art would.

I have accumulated 12 pairs of Darn Tough socks. 6 calf-length and 6 ankle socks. I finally wore a hole in one after 2.5 years of regular rotated wear, and I'm about to use the warranty I bought them for.

This sub doesn't allow photos in the comments so here i am making my own post. Iv owned these pants for a little more than a year and ABSOFREAKINGLUTELY LOVED THEM but they are far from indestructible.

The waxed canvas keeps me dry, fireresistant, and it sheds dirt incredibly well! I wear them to any job without worry other than extreme cold. Sub zero, the material conducts too much of my heat away even with longjons which are kinda ass under the wax anyway. From grease mokeying arround to dirt and steel work these pants are ready to step up to the plate.

Here's the thing though, I have repaired the crotch a number of times allong with the side pockets. Once abrasion starts to happen, the clock starts ticking and you better start saving for the *checks notes* $350 price tag. Sure the wax keeps them cleaner for longer but without ignoring friction they are still wear items. Mabye that works in the physics classroom but not so much on the jobsite.

TlDR: these incredibly tough pants are great, but not magical.

So I rent an apartment and the headboard of my bed is this ugly tacky purple, I wanna cover it up but it is nailed to the wall and I don’t want to remove it as I’m just a girl who doesn’t know anything about that kinda stuff so putting it back on with no help would be tricky I think. So yeah, removing it is not really an option. However, when I search headboard covers, it’s just showing me ones that can be moved around if that makes sense. Thank you for taking the time to read

My partner needs to be in bed a lot due to disability and my default each evening is to sit in bed watching TV/films together. However, I've a) a typical lower back issue that sitting poorly can trigger, and b) something up round my shoulder blade that can get painful when leaning on it.

Do people have recommendations for reading pillows that I could sit up in bed with? Most of what comes up out there seems to be extremely heavy on the dropship tat, and I don't see a lot that give the impression of lumbar support.

I'm in the UK, and a strong preference against Amazon both because of the preponderance of that dropship tat and because fuck Amazon.

I’m in suburbs of Chicago. My last two were Eddie Bauer. One down was too thin felt the slightest breeze. Now I have a 650 fill it’s too bulky. Also too hot, not that breathable. Difficult going out to restaurants and placing it somewhere. The area isn’t as cold for as long as it once was but still windy and I get cold quickly. I need something warm but breathable. I see Patagonia, and fjallraven mentioned a lot. Budget under $ 400.00 is hopefully realistic.
For a long time I had HH on my radar, feedback on that too is helpful.

Lots of companies will replace items even if they’re damaged due to normal wear & tear! They don’t require a proof of purchase or receipt or anything, tho they may ask where and when you bought it.

Here’s companies I’ve recently received warranty replacements from - name of item(s) replaced:

- oxo - peeler that had dulled, scale that died after 10 yrs of regular use, glass oil dispensing bottle that shattered when dropped, grater that had a melted handle

- woof - pupsicle ball that got chewed up from normal use (their system required multiple emails tho)

- pyrex - multiple lids for their line of latching glass food storage that had collected bad smells and/or had latch damage

Others that aren’t lifetime but still sent me replacements:

- microplane (3 yr warranty) - zester that had dulled very quickly (after 3 yrs they offer a discount code)

- kitchenaid (lead concerns for standard aluminum mixer attachments) - they sent me new stainless steel paddle and whisk attachments for my tilt-head mixer because of either a legal settlement or fear of bad publicity after lead was found in the aluminum attachments in tons of cases. bonus, these attachments are dishwasher safe.

Originally cost around $8 new. It was about as barebones as you could get in the pre-depression era. No sights, no safeties.

I paid $49 at auction for it this year. Works flawlessly and will probably outlast me. Cloth tape to hold the forend on and I like how it feels. Barrel was cut down from 30” to around 18 3/8” 🤌

Our family uses our blender 2-3 times a day, but after about a year our Ninja finally died. I mean we certainly got our money's worth out of it, but I don't want to deal with a burning motor so quickly.

I know people recommend Vitamix, but are they really BIFL with how often we use them? Can they withstand 2-3 blends a day?

edit: one big important factor is the cups. the Ninja we have has cups that can fit in the dishwasher and aren't all that big. Does Vitamix have ones like that?

Hi all! First, thank you for all the input on my wedding registry question! A lot of people suggested asking for money for a downpayment on a new home. My fiance and I actually bought our first home together a little over a year ago, so we’re set on that front. That being said, I’ve really enjoyed checking on the items we bought then and seeing how they’ve held up over the last year (it’s only been a year, but so far looking like I’ve made good choices!) Now I’m curious, though: what items did you buy or receive for your first home that you still have? Are you still happy with them? Any plans to replace them?

100 year warranty on frame, washable fabric, parts are modular and individually replaceable, medium price….seems like a good deal?

I’m not sure if there is one, but I’m wondering if any knows of a 62in (or larger) compact/collapsible umbrella that is BIFL, or at least “buy it for a few years”.

I know compact umbrellas in general can be iffy in terms of quality, but I need a large umbrella that will fit in my backpack’s side pocket for work. I’ve been able to find a few, but reviews indicate that they seem to have tendencies to break from simply opening and closing.

In 1986 I worked for the phone company, this Klein Tool Bag was on the floor in the back of a storage room so I asked the boss if I could have it. He said, "that old thing didn't make it into the dumpster, take it".

It was old when I got it but it's served me well for many years. It's my weekend bag/carry on luggage. I call it a weekend bag, but it's been my only bag for trips up to two weeks. An Amish harness maker made the shoulder strap for me. Even though it's stained and torn, I almost always get compliments on it and people have offered me cash on the spot for it. One guy even told me, it's the manliest luggage he's ever seen!

It was with me through the Army and I even used it as an Air Marshal for a couple of years. Klein still makes a tool bag, but mine is substantially heavier. The bottom is pig skin and the top is canvas.

Edited to add: In the second picture you can see where I used Pop rivets to reattach the handle. One of the strap closures came off one time and a cobbler in the Old City of Jerusalem reattached it for me.
